This vintage synth looks pretty good for it’s age. It has some typical wear on the sides and edges. There are no major flaws. There are no cracks or chips. All of the keys are perfect. All of the buttons look good. The display looks good. The other controls and sliders and such all look good too. Basically we have a vintage synthesizer that shows normal wear but no major flaws.

The system works perfetcly except that the MEMORY BATTERY HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED, so it will not remember edits or patches unless you change the battery or use a cartridge. All other features and functions work perfectly. All keys respond perfectly and the touch sensitivity on all keys is accurate. The keys are all straight and lined up perfetcly. All electronic features works perfetcly as well…the sound is awesome!!”

“This JX-8P was used in performance for five or six years and has since been safely stored in my home studio. I have been the sole owner of this keyboard and have kept it in excellent condition. I have tested every slider, switch, button, and key, and they are all fully functional! I also tested the midi input and output and both work as expected. As you can see in the photos, the keyboard is in very good shape and shows only the minor imperfections that you would expect from normal usage.

Please Note: There is one feature of this synth that is not responsive and that is the after touch. Like so many of these older models, the conductive strips beneath the key bed have lost their sensitivity over time. I have cleaned the entire mechanism thoroughly but was unable to restore it. If after touch is important to you, I suggest you hook up a midi controller and play the JX-8P remotely.

“This is a vintage Roland JX-8P synthesizer. The keyboard is in good, used condition, but is NOT perfect. Two of the keys – marked with blue tape on them – do not work. On the inside, it looks like wood was added, and the plastic where the screws screw into is broken. It is missing screws, and some of the screws on the bottom casing are not original. It has scratches / scuffs. I am not an expert, so it may have more problems than listed. It does come with a power cord, but NO other accessories are included. “One of my all-time favorite synths with a big, fat, unique analog sound that also incorporates some of the percussive attacks of the DX-7 along with it’s analog fatness. It’s in overall good shape with some minor scratches and scuffing.

One of the best features of the JX is the expressive aftertouch feature that can be used to boost things such as volume, modulation, brightness, opening of filters, etc. just by pressing down a little harder on the keys you are holding down. Unfortunately, on virtually every JX-8P in the world, the aftertouch no longer works or is very, very faint due to age. I’ve owned almost a dozen JX-8Ps through the years and it was an issue on each and every one of them as well as virtually any you’ll find for sale elsewhere.

It’s a tedious process to restore the aftertouch on one of these, but I’ve gotten very good at it. The synth gets opened up and the keybed removed. All 61 key springs are removed, then all the keys, one by one. While out, I gave the keys a good sudsy bath and removed all the dirty and grime of a 30+ year old synth. The aftertouch assembly which runs the length of the keybed is taken apart and meticulously cleaned to remove the oxidation that causes it to go out. Reassembly is nerve wracking and usually takes two sets of hands to pull off trying to lay a long metal ribbon atop 5 end to end carbon rubberized strips that sit on top of a gold rail and lay a heavy rubber cap onto of the whole assembly without knocking it askew and having to retry.

Anyhow, the aftertouch was fixed this week and now is expressive and strong without being overly touchy. You’ll enjoy it. If tested all key keys and functions and everything is working perfectly as far as I can tell.
