Powertran Transcendent 2000

“Well built example in decent cosmetic nick, all original knobs, original transfers intact, some scratches on the end cheeks.

Pots and switches cleaned and lubed, functioning perfectly. The keyboard tracks well, some keys need a little encouragement to engage. Incredibly stable tuning given the vintage. Intermittent tracking issue with the 3 lowest keys, seems to resolve after a decent warm-up. Filter works well in BP and LP modes. Be VERY careful with the resonance. ” Click here to visit listing on eBay

– Pots and keyboard connections have recently been cleaned, but it does have a few issues in line with its age
– Some of the pots have a bit of crackle, especially the VCO level control. Would be quite straightforward to replace
– The top C# key does not track pitch correctly. It will play the note value of whatever key was last pressed. I guess there is a broken connection somewhere which could be tested and fixed
– Apart from that, it plays and sounds great. The panel, woodwork and keyboard are all in great cosmetic condition for a 40 year old synth” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“Rare Joy Division sounding Transcendent 2000, not in currently working condition. The unit was in transformation to being made into a rack model from a keyboard, since 3 of the keys do not work. Photos of the keys are included and the power cord was removed to install a 110v power supply for use in the U.S. You can continue to work on it for a rack or desktop model, and that would actually be a beautiful synth.
It worked find otherwise, and 3 keys got damaged in the transit, so I searched the internet of a gent in England who turned his keyboard model into a rack for portability. You don’t really need the keys if you install a midi panel and use a modern keyboard controller.
Anyway, this is the job for someone to continue working on this already made kit when it was purchased, or use it to enhance your already working Transcendent 2000 for parts. Either way it’s worth it!” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Powertran Transcendent 2000

” For Sale a legendary 70’s synth. The Transcendent 2000 was one of the first commercially available synths to be available to the public. It was sold as a kit and this one was built by myself. It was never used in anger and was put away with other band gear in a store room. Now I am having a clear out and it’s up for sale.

There is lots about this synth on the internet. Designed by Tim Orr this type of synth was popular in the late 70’s early 80’s and in particular was used by Joy Division. These are fairly rare beasts , especially a working one. I have checked the synth out and adjusted some of the key contacts to give better contact / overtravel. This was a weak point on these synths as they are fairly delicate. So here we have a fully working example of this traditional analogue synth. All the keys work , all the controls work. Overall it is in good condition for its’ age. It is monophonic ( one note at a time) but has some great sounds /effects. If you are not familiar with this synth please note it must be plugged into a sound system/ amplifier etc. in order to use it , ie. no built in sound system but that’s pretty standard for a synth.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

“This Powertran Transcendent 2000 analogue monophonic synthesiser has been completely refurbished and repaired. All faulty ICs, transistors, capacitors and diodes have been replaced. The keyboard and all controls are fully working.
The synth is the same model as used by ‘Joy Division’ in the 80’s. The synth was realigned according to the manual, using a digital oscilloscope and multimeter. The manual and pedal are included.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Here is my Transendent 2000, previously owned by the producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division amongst various other Manchester based artists).

It was acquired from Martin’s widow by Chris Hewitt who ran the Music Shop downstairs from Cargo Studios where Joy Division recorded Atmosphere. Martin was Joy Division’s producer throughout their short existence and this unit was apparently used on Atmosphere. Chris wrote me a short letter to this affect, included in the sale.

It has been serviced this week by Andy Horrell of Emis, one of the leading techs here in the UK. He still has the synth but I can ask him to take some more pics if you’d like them.

You will note that two of the knobs are non standard. Andy did some research for me on this and found another ex Hannett unit which was sold over the last few years featuring knobs of this type. (See the picture featuring the unit with Hannett photograph).

It’s important that these units are serviced before buying as they were DIY kits and the quality of the builds can be variable. Andy has turned away some stinkers in his time but this one has been given a clean bill of health and just needed a service and calibration.

It comes with one of Martin’s hand built wooden cases (currently in my loft), Chris’s book and DVD on Martin and of course the letter.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Powertran Transcenent 2000 Project Machine

pt “Had this for years, with a view to getting it sorted, but have never gotten around to it.

This synth was designed by the guys at EMS, but released in Kit form under the banner Powertran.
As used by Joy Division.

All working apart from the key contact array is missing (See photo), so cannot be played from the keyboard.
Works with CV/Gate (1.2V/Oct I think rather than 1V/Oct or Hz/V), or could be modded with a new contact arrangement.

Key contacts on these things were the real weak point, as the contacts were almost impossible to access properly to clean.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

eingesetzt.” Click here to visit listing on eBay

Modified Synthesizer Module With Midi

This item is re-listed as now it is faulty. The unit was modified a while ago and has a midi converter built in. I have no time to repair this item so I have decided to sell spares or repairs. The unit powers up but now exhibits strange behaviour with some sound now and again. Midi side seems to be functioning but I cannot be 100%. I have repaired this unit several times before, I cannot be bothered to remove the cover again so grab a bargain.” Link
