MSQ-700, Roland @ 13 March 2016, Comments Off on Roland MSQ-700

msq700“Roland’s MSQ-700 was the first MIDI-compatible sequencer in the world.

The MSQ-700 is an 8-track sequencer that holds up to 6,500 notes that can be stored. Several functions of the MSQ-700 include a chain function, multi-track function, overdubbing and a merge function. Use it to control your TR-909, or Juno-60 or any other MIDI equipment. The MSQ-700 is compatible with both MIDI and Roland’s proprietary DCB sync methods (although it can’t do both at the same time). It remains a popular and fun retro sequencer for Juno 60 and Jupiter 8 owners.

I bought this used a long time ago to sequence my Juno 60, and never took it out of climate-controlled storage. Mine is clean and not yellowed or smelling of smoke or mildew. There are a couple of tiny paint dings on the front panel; my photograph is honest and accurate. As far as I can tell, this unit is operational. It initializes without error messages, and the buttons and switches are all functional. I have NOT set it up with MIDI instruments to test, so you are buying it AS IS.

Power cord is included, but the DCB cable is not. This cable is still available online. Serial number is 401778.

There is a ton of information on the MSQ-700 online; I recommend you read up a little if you’re unfamiliar with its uses and functions, capabilities and limitations. I’ve included three pages from the factory brochure, which I do not own and which is NOT part of this auction.” Link

This is in good condition. Everything seems to work though I have no way to test it all. Metronome works and clicks.
Someone has changed the power cord out to accept regular power cords. Helpful but a little butched up in the back. See pic.
Works fine.
I am selling this in UNTESTED condition because I have no way to fully test it.
I will include power cord.” Link

“ncluded in this auction:
> MSQ-700 Recorder
> Original Roland power cord
> Owner’s Manual (hard copy & PDF)
> Laptop bag, as a carrying case

The recorder is in excellent (I might go so far as to say “minty”) condition, showing only minor wear. It was only used for a small handful of gigs, during the mid 1990s, with J.P. Box at CB’s Gallery (next door to CBGB’s) in New York City. I initially received it from a friend about 7 years before, so it hasn’t seen much use at all. Back then I had always preferred my Atari ST for MIDI sequencing. But when it came time to triggering MIDI sequences live (drum machine & two sound modules), the MSQ-700 fit the bill perfectly. Far better than dragging a computer to a gig.

This MSQ has only been partially tested for this auction. Access to gear is kinda limited at the moment. Here’s the extent of it: The MIDI Out of the recorder was connected to my laptop via a MIDI to USB interface. While the MSQ was playing sequences, the laptop (SampleTank as the sound engine) was producing sound.” Link

“We have a Roland MSQ 700 for sale!
This fantastic unit is working properly and well.
Jacks and controls operate properly with no intermittence.
Unit in in great shape overall showing very little wear.
Screen is nice and bright.
Unit requires the infamous two-prong power cable; we do not have one to include in this auction.
How did we test it, you say? With our patented “Death Cable” made from speaker connectors!!!! (see photo #8).
We are not including the Death Cable due to liablility reasons.
One can easily retrofit the unit for a standard three-pin IEC cable or find one of the old-school cables.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

MSQ-700, Roland, SBX-80 @ 30 January 2011, Comments Off on Roland SBX-80 and MSQ-700

“Up for auction is a vintage Roland SBX-80 Sync Box as well as a Roland MSQ-700. Terrific vintage relics from our musical past. The Sync Box offers many options for sending and receiving different beat sources. I purchased this piece originally to (DIN)sync a TR-808 and/or Roland CR-8000 Drum machines with a tap tempo. This also works well to tap tempo for arpeggiators inputs on any period synth (Jupiter 4, 6, 8, Juno-60, Korg Mono/Poly etc…). I am including a DIN/SYNC cable with this particular piece (looks like a MIDI cable but pin-configured differently). Also included is a Roland MSQ-700. I purchased this particular unit to sequence with a JUNO-60 with a DCB port.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

MSQ-700, Roland @ 12 September 2010, Comments Off on Roland MSQ-700

“The Roland MSQ-700 was the worlds first MIDI sequencer. It is an 8 track sequencer that can hold 6500 notes. Has part mode and song mode and can also do overdubs.

It also has a DCB port for sequencing the Jupiter 8 or the Juno 60. Sadly, it cannot sequencer both MIDI and DCB at the same time, only one of the other.

BUT…

One of the coolest things it does is to sync MIDI clock to Roland’s proprietary DINSync24 for all your XOX boxes (TR-808, 909, 303, 606, etc). You can step sequence your 808 and then lock its sequencer to your computer’s MIDI clock and have perfect timing between the drum machine and your host sequencer (Logic, ProTools, DP, Live, etc). This is primarily what I used the MSQ for.

The removable 2 prong Roland power cord has been replaced with a hard wired 3 prong power cable. Comes with a copy of the manual. ” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

This vintage step sequencer looks and feels beautiful. Near mint condition (9 out of 10, losing a 1 only because of its age) – works perfectly as a classic pattern step sequencer. I used it in a traditional MIDI set up but it’s possibly more coveted for it’s ability to control the Juno 60 and Jupiter 8. Original list price of $1,195 in 1984, own a piece of history!” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.
