“Kawai K5000s Additive Synth in good condition. This is IMO the best pad / odd texture synth ever made. So much potential for sound creation. The knoby section is so fun and inspiring. Check out youtube vids on it as the sound engine will blow your mind.
It all works and looks good but there are a few things to note.. The keys have yellowed over time.. it happens. Also, there are 2 or three buttons that take a harder press than the others.. off the top.. its the System button, The bank 3 button and the arpeggiator button. “I bought this new in 1996. It has almost never been used. Everything works. However, I have not done any O.S. upgrades on this unit, and I’m pretty sure it could use one. The current O.S. is 3.00. For me, the coolest things about this synth is the arpeggiator (it does arpeggios that I have never seen on any other synth), the real-time knobs (very analog-like control), and the awesome keyboard which is (as far as I remember) the same as the one used in the Roland A-70 controller, which is semi-weighted and feels amazing. The black keys have an almost wood-like feel.
Unfortunately I never got into programming this beast beyond simple patches using the knobs. I know that additive synthesis is very powerful but I just never had the time to delve into it. This unit is VERY CLEAN. It still has the plastic covering on the LCD. It comes with the owner’s manual, four floppy disks, and a mint Anvil case that was ordered specifically for this unit. I will re-foam the case because the foam is old. I will ship to the USA, Europe, Canada and Japan. However, I will need a postal code prior to end of auction in order to supply a shipping quote. “An absolute classic and quite rare mono synth from Kawai
This one is in excellent cosmetic condition with barely any obvious signs of use… but it has been used and it does have some signs of age if you look carefully.
There are no big dents, scratches or battered wood on this one… it’s really good just some minor little marks that come with age.
It was serviced when I got it and it still works great but I have noticed a few keys retrigger until you play it more.

Not POWERING ON…Nothing.. Not a click, not a flicker.. I could not get it to fire up with my universal/Multi-tip adapter… NO further testing performed.
I honestly think there is just a little corrosion at the POWER input or perhaps a FUSE that needs to be replaced?

“Most of the capacitors on the main board have been replaced with low ESR 105C Panasonic, and I replaced the 1uf electrolytes with much improved film to further reduce noise in the overall circuit. I replaced the NJM4556D headphone opamp with JRC2068DD which has faster slew rate and higher bandwidth. All these updates added more clarity on the high end (while still keeping the 16 bit K4 character) and with the mods it sounds better than the original K4 when I did a direct comparison against the unmodified one.
I replaced the LCD display with a much better one and installed a 10k trimmer resister. To adjust the display brightness simply insert a screwdriver in the + slot of the trimmer resister and gently turn however I already adjusted it to the best luminosity. I have also performed this modification to my other K4s since it’s a great improvement over the original display.
I installed a new volume slider potentiometer. It is now much smoother sliding than the original. And I also installed the latest Version 1.4 OS chip, purchased new.
I have found much (but certainly not all!) of what the K4 is capable and will keep the patches I designed after the circuit upgrade.
There are individual buttons to select or mute each layer which means that parameter access/sound design is relatively quick. Immediate muting lets you quickly hear the layer you are working on which is important for sound design. The K4 excels at resonant transcendent beautiful digital crystalline pads and the resonance is so high and fizzy that it can devolve into sizzling distortion so I never use maximum but it makes for a very interesting unique sound. “Vintage Kawai K3 Digital Wave Memory Synthesizer.
I’m the original owner of this fine vintage synth. You probably know that its synthesis techniques are pretty unique, and that the keyboard has a great pressure after-touch for controlling any patch parameter by leaning into it. Comes with an extra memory module.
Everything works well, with the following exceptions:
The volume slider wasn’t working so it was bypassed. For live control you’ll want a volume pedal.
The headphone jack isn’t working, but should be repairable. The low E key is a little tilted after a fix, and plays fine.
All outputs, pitch wheel, and edit controls are great, and the sound is perfect.”
