“Vintage Ensoniq ESQ-1 Synthesizer with 2 Cartridges for Parts or Repair. Unit powers up and all of the keys produce sound. Modulator and Pitch controls work. The display shows only digits along the top and bottom edges. Pressing buttons produces digits on the display but the sound does not change. This is the plastic case version with the metal heat sink on the back. There is one internal and one external cartridge. The external cartridge is missing its label. Data slider is missing its cap. “Ensoniq SD-1 Music Production Synthesizer low battery voltage warning
When turning the unit on, it displays “Low Battery Voltage” warning message is showing up. After click “Continue” button the unit seems to perform normally. All keys work and I was able to change different setting and sounds. No cartridge. Some floppy disks for sounds. Did not test all disks Synthesizer and a power cable only. Cosmetically it’s in good condition. Does show some wears. I cleaned the keys and they look good although they do look little yellowish color. “Very fine Ensoniq SQ80 synth. Functions perfectly, no issues with buttons or sliders. All keys work prefectly, with polyphonic aftertouch working well across the deck. No issues with buttons. New battery and new main volume slider (from syntuar). The volume slider is quiet and smooth. This keyboard is a joy to play, the natural warmth is so appealing. The aftertouch is very expressive, you can route it for many possibilities. Bend wheel and modulation wheel function with no issues. MIDI in/out/thru . It comes loaded with and ready to play! This unit includes 2 TWO patch cartridges. 1 original stock cart. The 3.5 inch floppy drive does spin, but presents an error reading. I’ve never even tried to use it in the 20 years I’ve owned this synth, until now, when I tested it. Includes standard power cord. Digital waveforms and analog filters. It’s among a handful of late 80’s keys with digital waveforms and analog processing (I’m keeping my Kawaii K3). The ROM is stock. There are options for an ‘expanded’ ROM, but I just haven’t seen the need for it, the present waveforms are just fine. There are options for a floppy drive replacement, but again, I have not found the need for that either. I cherish this unit, but due to GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), I must let it go. The keyboard will be wrapped, padded, wrapped, boxed, then double boxed and padded more. There’s some really special patches on the 2 included carts. The emulated softsynth version is pretty faithful, but it can’t quite do the analog filtering like the real deal. This is the real deal. “Ensoniq ESQ-1 Digital Wave Synthesizer – 1985 Serial Number 12389 – Very lightly used and still works well with the following caveats: (1) The integrated battery needs to be replaced. A warning is shown when you turn it on and it won’t remember any changes to sounds programmed in the internal memory or sequences recorded with the builtin music workstation capabilities until this is done. (2) Once recently it failed to work at all and the display just blinked on and off and no sound was produced. This solved itself somehow, possibly a result of allowing the capacitors to discharge. If that is the case, the synth may need service at some point soon to replace bad capacitors, which is a common or even expected problem in vintage synths. Or it may also be due to a loose ribbon cable, another common fixable issue with these synths. Otherwise it works fine, including all buttons and keys, both synth and sequencer. I played with it for several hours before preparing this listing. “This item has been refurbished twice since my ownership of it. The first repair was a problem with the display no longer lighting up, and this was due to a blown capacitor. The offending capacitor as well as the other old capacitors have all been replaced and the display now works perfectly. The second repair was replacing the lithium battery after getting a low battery warning (the lithium battery on this synth only lasts twenty or so years, and without it you cannot retain patches or sequences after powering down). The lithium battery installed was brand new and should give the synth at least 15 more years of memory. This model comes with software version 3.20 installed, program cartridge, power cord, and this version comes with the SQX-20 sequencer extender already installed, this allows 20,000 more events for the on-board sequencer. The only defect with this unit is a small hairline crack on the bottom of the F4 key, which is easily replaced and entirely cosmetic. I’ve included a picture of the defect. “This iconic keyboard from the early 90’s is still sounding great today. It is a versatile workstation incorporating a wavetable synthesiser with 180 sounds and an onboard sequencer. It has 21 voices of polyphony, aftertouch, and a 3.5″ disk storage drive, and is great for use as a MIDI keyboard controller. It is highly programmable, and all settings can be saved to internal memory and disk. The internal battery has recently been changed. As well as provision for a foot switch, it also has a pedal CV socket, a headphone output, Auxiliary Left and Right outputs as well as Main Left and Right. It is in good condition, although it has one small nick in the front facia, and some of the legendry is fading. It comes in its original box with the Musician’s Manual. “Ensoniq VFX in good working order. Everything tested and working fine. Re-initialized to factory condition. Bright display, all jacks and buttons function properly. Keyboard link mod has been done to stop the known “keyboard calibration” error. Internal battery has been replaced with a battery holder to make battery replacement easy. Takes readily available CR2032. I just put a new battery in so should last for many years. Last one lasted about 10 years. B5 key has been replaced so its whiter than the rest. Some cosmetic blemishes as shown in the pictures. Mostly residue from stickers that I couldn’t get off with a quick Goo Gone wipe. A couple scratches. Look at pics to see full details. Included are the Ensoniq FSW-1 sustain pedal, a case, the power cable, and a CD-Rom I put together that includes the manual in PDF, a text document with Sysex transfer instructions, and a ton of Sysex banks and single patches that were collected over the years from various sources. Some of the patches are for the VFX SD so they don’t sound right but the overwhelming majority sound as they were intended. No cartridge included. Clean inside, no signs of damage that I can see
Outside of case, keys, etc are all in great cosmetic shape, the two left side top case fasteners have slight damage inside, but case stays closed fine
PSU has been re-capped, but not by me so I do not know it’s history
