“Up for sale is an (1) extremely rare RSF Blackbox, family of the RSF Kobol. It’s a 18 keys synthesizer made in the seventies by Ruben and Serge Fernandez in France. The synthesizer works perfectly! Only around 800 units manufactured !
Probably one of the best sounding mono synths ever built.

I have seen one of these sell via a private auction end of last year in the U.K. for a little more than £4500/5000 euros.

Some called it the French answer to the MiniMoog, among other great features it has :

“This is an auction for my RSF Kobol Expander II, an ideal partner for your RSF Kobol Expander but also just as easily integrated into a vintage modular or semi-modular synth system such as those from ARP, Moog, EMS, Roland, etc as well as modern modular synthesiser systems from the likes of MOTM, Synthesizers.com, Analogue Systems, Analogue Solutions, Doepfer, & all the Eurorack variety…

The mains plug & internal wiring has been modified to better comply with modern safety standards.
It’s for 230V EU mains voltage supply. (IEC lead not supplied.)

As the pictures show this is in superb condition for a 30 year old unit & I have cleaned it also prior to listing. (No sticky pots!)
The only visible marks are around the pair of rack mounting holes at either side of the unit & once racked these are of course then hidden anyway.

All functions as it should, though I don’t have the information regarding calibration & considering it’s age it may well benefit from a routine service.

These Expander systems were made by Ruben & Serge Fernandez of the RSF Synthesizer Company in France from 1979-81.
It uses an SSM 2050 chip for the envelope generator as well as other rare IC’s from that era alongside analogue circuit design.

Certainly vintage, it seems the Fernandez brothers were inspired by the Moog & Oberheim synths of the day but as the vintage synth crew know all too well, RSF instruments had a character all of their own, with some unique features that allow for amazing flexibility, especially on the Expanders, thanks mainly to extensive Control Voltage (CV) implementation for all the modules within the unit, as evidenced by the number of jack sockets around the edges- 40 in total. (Note these are for 1/4″ jacks & have been cleaned.)

“This machine was made in very small quantity in France in the 80s. Ruben and Serge Fernandez also made the famous Kobol series of analog synths. It samples sounds and allows you to tweak them and program drum patterns with them. It is lo-fi and beautiful when working. Sadly, this one stopped working on me years ago and I have moved it place to place, broken, ever since. I have had the intention of fixing it, but have never gotten around to it. There is a guy in France who repairs RSF stuff, but I didn’t really want to ship it there and back. At any rate, it’s awesome, but I need to thin the herd a bit. It has a few SSM2044 filters in it. The RSF Blackbox is a small 18 keys mini synthesizer that can turn your Analog Monophonic Synthesizers into Polyphonic by the use of CV/Gate with both type of Voltage Source as CV Volt/Oct. And/Or Hertz Volts and Both Gate Types as Positive Gate (V-Trigger) or Negative Gate (S-Trigger).

These are extremely rare modules built by Ruben and Serge Fernandez from France,Toulouse.

These modules have been built in 1977 and 1978.Not more than 300 modules in total have been built for a total of 20 systems.

So RSF is even rare than old Buchla.

Some systems have been in private collections and been put into larger cases.So less than 20 systems are available.

These 2 systems are working on 220v,so a voltage converter will be needed to use it in the USA and Japan.

About 75% of the modules are working.They do need to be serviced,some pots cleaned,calibration,repairs,tuning,…

Whats in the systems: 5x VCO, 4x VCA, 2x ENV, 2x VCF, 2x Mixer,2x Power,1x ENV FOL,1x S&H/Noise.

The keyboard is a 8 voice keyboard with 8 seperate cv/gates, arpeggiator,sequencer wich can have sequences uploaded thru the cassette player/recorder from RSF.Keyboard is self-powered at 220V.

There is also a cassette player/recorder originaly built by RSF(stamp underneath)wich works at 220v.

It can be connected to the keyboard as there is a flat cable inside the keyboard that fits on the cassette player/recorder.

I also have paperwork and schematics to have certain repairs/services done to the modules.
