“Ensoniq ESQ-1 Wave Synthesizer- Partially Working. One Octave NON-FUNCTIONAL. Condition is “Used”. This is the METAL case ESQ-1. Rom upgraded to 3.50. New backup battery installed November 2020. Includes 1 sound cartridge. As an extra bonus some labels were installed on the keys so you can navigate your way around those tricky notes.

There’s nothing better than a metal keyboard case because it’s tough and can take a beating so if you’re using this on the road you’ll be pleased with the durability.

The factory screws used to secure the top and keyboard have been replaced and half are missing. One of the top screw sockets has broke (see photo). As mentioned in the headline one octave of the keys are non-functional. This is the second octave section. “Ensoniq ESQ-1 wave synthesizer. This unit was made in 1988. Analog/digital hybrid design combines digital waveforms and analog filters. Features include onboard sequencer, MIDI, multitimbral, ring mod, 61 keys, velocity sensitive, eight-note polyphonic. Power cable included, plus accessories.

Comes with the very rare Ensoniq CVP-1 volume pedal. Ordinary volume pedals do not work with this synthesizer. It requires this unique Ensoniq pedal, which is harder to find than the synth itself.

Also includes two cartridges. One is a ROM card with preset patches that cannot be overwritten. The other is a RAM card that can store your own patches. I currently have the RAM card and synth’s internal memory filled with third party, analog-style patches. The synth’s original factory preset patches can be easily found online and downloaded via MIDI.

Overall beautiful condition with only light wear. The only notable cosmetic flaw is a hole on the underside of one key (see picture). That has been there since I bought the synth in 2016 and it has never caused a problem or had any effect on the feel of the key while playing. The key is fully functional and responds just like all the other keys. It would be simple to install a replacement key sometime in the future when it is time to change the battery. The synth will probably be due for a battery change in the next year or so. That would be a good time to also replace the key.”

“Ensoniq ESQ-1 Synthesizer Keyboard with 13 sound preset cartridges, as-is

Keyboard powers on with bright display and makes sound.

Keys are intermittent. Some sound, some don’t, some work sometimes. They seem to get better as I play it. Perhaps it will fix itself over time (but don’t count on that). The buttons seem to operate (though I didn’t test every one). The volume and data sliders work. Cartridges that I tried load their sounds but, again, I can’t guarantee that all cartridges work. (You should use some electronics contact spray – like DeOxit D5 – on the cartridge contacts.)

This unit was in storage for years and likely suffered from less-than-ideal environmental conditions. Consider it in need of maintenance. As I say, it basically works but needs TLC. That’s why it’s sold as “For parts, not working” and as-is, as-found.” Click here to search for synths on eBay

Fully functioning. “Battery Warning” (for saving settings) message lights – Battery can be replaced by a user with soldering iron, braid and solder, a screw driver, allan wrench and battery. I’d do it myself if I was going to keep it. Stored in the foam-lined case so there is virtually no dust inside. Keys are yellowed from age and one has a tiny burn mark but ALL WORK.
