“For sale is a rare vintage Arp Axxe MkII. This came from the original owner and was well taken care of, while it shows some wear on the sides the top, front rear and bottom are quite clean. Top graphics are bright with very minor wear.
Functionally it has not been serviced over the years so it will need a regular checkup. The sliders are a bit stiff/gummy/scratchy as typical on old Arps, and the switches are a bit stiff/scratchy, the keys don’t trigger perfectly and are clacky/not fully level. It appears that the functions are working for the most part and sounds as it should, but considering we have not had time to service this it will be sold as-is needing some maintenance. “This vintage ARP Axxe Mk I has just been fully serviced & overhauled by Synthchaser – recapped, new key bushings, new LED sliders, clean, fully functional, calibrated, in tune and sounding great. Beautiful new walnut side panels were custom crafted for this Axxe. This powerful 37 key monosynth is great for leads and effects.

The one oscillator’s saw and pulse outputs can be mixed with the white noise source. The oscillator may be modulated by LFO (square and/or sine), random sample & hold, and ADSR. Pulse width adjustable from 5% to 50% and may be modulated by LFO and ADSR. 4 pole voltage controlled filter with self-oscillating capabilities. Filter may be modulated by keyboard control voltage, random sample & hold, LFO and ADSR. Normal keyboard triggering mode, as well as keyboard repeat and auto repeat. “ARP Axxe Synthesiser, possibly mid 70’s. Not Working.. Condition is For parts or not working. I’ve been asked to sell this by a very good friend. It belonged to her son who sadly died many years ago and this has been languishing in her garage since then. It was only used at home by him but as it was purchased second hand I’ve no information about its prior life. As can be seen in the photos it comes with an extremely robust flight case so I assume it was originally bought by a gigging musician from the “London Synthesiser Centre”. My friends memory isn’t clear as to when he bought it but she thinks it was in the early 80’s. I borrowed a monitor amp from a friend and plugged it in, unfortunately it was unresponsive to any attempt to get any coherent response from pressing the keys or adjusting the various controls and sliders. It did make a “Synthesiser” noise which made half hearted responses to some of the controls but most definitely needs someone with the the relevant expertise to get it operational again. I suppose that in the worst case scenario it could be used as a parts donor to get other similar types up and running but that would be a shame as cosmetically it’s not in bad condition, the only real problem is the fact that virtually all of the small knobs which fitted on the sliders have decayed and gone missing. In one of the photos you can see the only two remaining intact ones. In one of the photos I’ve shown the sticker giving its model and serial number if anyone knows where to look for its date of manufacture. The flight case is very shabby as can be seen in the photos but it’s actually structurally sound and the interior is still giving excellent protection for the instrument. I think the carcase could be made to look respectable again but the hinges, catches and corner protectors are badly afflicted by surface rust although they all function well and I guess could be restored to almost as new. It comes with its original power lead. I’ve tried to get some info. on line about this instrument and believe that in working order it could well be worth many hundreds of pounds whilst the flight case alone would be worth a fair amount. “The panel has some small scratches and the ARP Axxe logo sticker is missing, but the silkscreening is strong and clear. Please see photos for condition. From an electronic standpoint, this has been totally overhauled:

Synthchaser Precision LED slider upgrade. All 23 of the old original sliders have been replaced with new, smooth, high precision LED illuminated sliders. The difference in the way these sliders feel and perform compared to the originals is a huge improvement.
Power supply rebuilt – All tantalum and electrolytic capacitors in the power supply have been replaced, and high quality, high temperature 105 deg C capacitors have been used for the power supply filter capacitors.
All tantalum capacitors replaced – The tantalum capacitors in ARP synths are ticking time bombs. All tantalum capacitors in this synth have been replaced with electrolytics to help provide stable operation for years to come.
All CMOS and Op Amp ICs replaced – The original CMOS chips and op amps used in these synthesizers are prone to failure. We find it a best practice to replace all these chips in this keyboard to fix issues it may be having and to prevent future issues from popping up as chips fail. New IC chips have been socketed where space allowed for ease of future servicing.
4075 Filter Enhancement – The ARP Axxe uses the same 4075 filter submodules found in the Quadra, Odyssey, Omni, Avatar, and Pro/DGX which was designed with a calculation error that limited the cutoff frequency. The 4075 filter submodule has been recapped, and corrected to provide superior frequency response, and tested for proper operation in the Synthchaser custom test fixture.
Keyboard rebuild – New key bushings installed, keys removed and ultrasonically cleaned, bus bars removed and polished, key contacts cleaned and adjusted, keybed leveled.
Beautiful walnut side panels – the original side panels were replaced with custom crafted hardwood Walnut panels.
Pots and switches cleaned
New pitch bend knob
New power cord
Main circuit board washed to clean off 40+ years of dirt and grime that entered through the slider openings
Oscilloscope calibration – Calibrated & tuned using oscilloscope and frequency counter.
1/4″ output made High – ARPs of this era had an RCA jack as the high output and the 1/4″ jack as the low output. As today RCA jacks are an inconvenience for most, the 1/4″ jack has been made to a second high output. This modification is easily reversible by cutting 1 wire.”

“Selling this great vintage MK1 analog synthesizer with the Moog filter design that has just gone in for a several hundred dollar tune up at a local specialist here in town last year.
This synth is the brother of the Arp Odyssey.
Here’s what I had done to it:

Recapped Power Supply
Brand new keyboard bushings
Cleaned and Restored Sliders
Tuned and Calibrated

Cosmetically it has the wear expected from a 45 (!) year old synthesizer but it sounds and plays great.
There is cosmetic wear to both the wood side panels and the screenprinted graphics on the synth face.
Since the keys had the inevitable yellowing they were painted flat white to look more uniform as photographed.

PLUS throwing in photocopy of the original manual and blank patch sheets from my files.
PLUS throwing in 2 11×17 prints advertising the Arp Axxe!”

” I’m not going to even try to “sugarcoat” this vintage Arp Axxe monolithic Synthesizer. It LOOK’s terrible! Some of the control sliders finger tabs are broken off, but can still be moved with your fingernail, (not convenient but it works). It looks as if the previous owner cleaned the unit every day, all the panel flow diagrams are almost worn off and hard to read. The keyboard is in good condition – cosmetically and the does work, but all the contacts need cleaning and do clean up.

I have dabbled with keyboards and synthesizers for many years, as an technician, not a musician.This Arp AXXE does have a heartbeat! I plugged it in this morning and found that many of the functions work as they should! The oscillators, VCO & LFO’s work, Noise Gen. works, VCA works, Mixer works, Envelope Generator (ASDR) work. As I mentioned above many of the electrical contacts need cleaning in order to eliminate some of the “dead or scratchy spots”. Alcohol and Q-tips seem to work well. The circuit board seems to be original – no modifications and it appears that it has never been removed. This vintage synthesizer IS NOT DOA and with some TLC it should function ALMOST as it did when it was new.”
