E-mu SP-1200 is a classic drum machine and sampler released in August 1987 by E-mu Systems Inc.as an update of the SP-12, which was originally created for dance music producers. It became famed for its gritty texture and ability to simulate the “warmth” of vinyl recordings. The SP-1200 became an icon of hip hop’s golden era, due to its ability to construct the bulk of a song within one piece of portable gear—a first for the industry.

This resulted in reduced studio costs and more creative control for artists. “The machine rose to such prominence that its strengths and weaknesses sculpted an entire era of music: the crunchy digitized drums, choppy segmented samples, and murky filtered basslines that characterize the vintage New York sound are all mechanisms of the machine.” Designed to be used as both a drum sequencer and sampler in one, the SP-1200 features a 26.04 kHz sampling rate and 12-bit resolution. Those audio qualities, combined with the idiosyncratic SSM2044 filter chips with which these machines were fitted, make for a dirty, gritty sound.

The Flame Midi Talking Synth is a midi-controlled sound module based on the analogue speakjet chip, originally designed for basic artificially generated robotic speech output, it was then refined and further developed as an 8-bit sound module with speech-like sounds and synthetic robot voices as well as beeps, alarms, noise and retro-style sci-fi sounds. due to the structure of the speakjet (with its complex sound synthesizer, preset sounds and serial interface) it offers an impressive range of possibilities.

It contains 72 speech elements (allophones), 43 sound effects, and 12 dtm touch tones. the idea was to create sounds, patterns and sequences in the 8-bit style of the 80s or other retro sounds for making music instead of just simulating speech. most allophones can be tuned and used tonally. the flame midi talking synth contains two speakjet chips to produce a richer and more complex tonal variety as well as generating a pseudo stereo effect.

Even more, its native 72 speech elements (allophones) can be filtered and tuned thus becoming useful parts in electronic music-composing/arranging. There have been used two Speakjet chips instead of only one due to the richer tonalities such dual array can provide and to the pseudo-stereo effect using two such modulators can create.

There are some good and bad points, so please read below. I am not an expert, so inspection is welcome, but i
will try to be as clear as possible.

-Firstly and most importantly the unit works. all the knobs and faders seem do what they should.
-Some knobs and faders are alittle scratchy and could use a clean.
-The keyboard needs a service or the contacts may need a clean, as some keys play out of tune notes, and some dont work randomly etc.
-One of the knobs (fine tune in VCO2) is missing (the actual shaft is broken, so probably needs a new pot, although it still works as-is)
-The rear panel is missing (never bothered to put one on it as it has been sitting on a desk all the time ive had it.)
-The rear sockets are a little rusty and it could probably could use new ones as they are fairly cheap.
-a couple of screws are missing from the side panels – see pics.

NOTE – the pics show one more knob missing from the “keyboard control” in the VCF section, but i have the knob, it just fell off for the pic

Realistic was Radio Shack’s brand, but in 1981 MOOG made this synth to be sold in it’s stores, which is why it has the super warm and fat sound that makes it so desirable today. It features the infamous 24db/oct Moog filter, 2 Oscillators, an LFO with a ‘Sample-and-Hold” function, a polyphonic ‘Organ’ setting, ring modulator and more. It also has CV/GATE control so that it can be used with other synthesizers and drum machines, an essential feature not found on other similar consumer-marketed synthesizers.

It is one of the most affordable ways to enter the world of both monophonic synthesizers and MOOG synthesizers, but it’s also a unique synthesizer with a sound of it’s own. It’s really hard for me to let this one go, it definitely has a sound that I can’t get from my other synthesizers.” Link

Replaced the red LFO LED with a bright blue LED

Added ‘Sync Sweep’ functionality

Switch added to adjust the Envelope Generator to sweep the pitch of Oscillator 2. When the two oscillators are not sync’ed, you get Osc 2 pitch ‘swoops’, but when they are sync’ed, you get very cool metallic dynamic timbre changes.” Link

It is missing one slider and one knob (see pics below),
but this does not effect your ability to adjust those settings.
You can easily find replacement knobs and sliders on Ebay.

There is light static when adjusting the volume knob, but only
while turning the knob. Once you reach your desired volume, the sound is clean and static free.

The unit sounds great, but being a vintage unit,
I’m sure it is due for a routine internal cleaning of the switches/potentiometers.

I have enjoyed playing this instrument and have had no problems with it besides two loose faders which I had repaired. This is a unique and highly collectible piece of synthesizer history. I am sad to part with this keyboard, but I am a guitar player and can no longer justify holding onto it.

This unit is in excellent condition. I used it only in an in-home setting, and infrequently. The exterior is in near-mint condition, with no dings or scratches. I even still have the originial box (or what’s left of it), which I’d be happy to include. Unfortunately, I’ve lost the original owner’s manual, but discovered that it’s available as a download online. It was never taken on the road, or exposed to the wear and tear of live performance. I’ve had this keyboard checked out by a qualified technician, and while not “restored”, it has been thoroughly tested and all functions (filters, envelope generators, mixer, etc.) are in fine working order. All knobs and switches are original. The only modification this machine has is that the brown foam that covered the circuit board has been removed to prevent its breaking down and affecting the operation.

I have a friend who knows about these units recently tested this unit and said that it checks out excellent. Everything powers up and appears to be doing its thing. It has been well preserved in its blue custom anvil case in excellent which is included with the unit. Both cabinets are in superb condition and don’t appear to ever have been modified/refinished which both have the same production date and serial number. There are no patch cords or keyboard controller included with this auction (I’ve never received them). Due to its age there are no warranties or returns with this unit. I’ve described everything as to the best of my knowledge as possible. Though I’m a guitarist whose no expert on Moog’s, I do have some knowledge on them and be willing to answer any question as best as possible. Rare module synth that will only go up in value as time goes on. Hate to see it go but how often do you see an original System 55 on eBay or anywhere else.

Update: I recently had a friend whose a synth expert told me that this unit was custom ordered directly from Robert Moog without the sequencer installed at the customers request. It was a delete option and in it’s place had the Moog panels installed as shown.” Link
