cs80 “Yamaha CS-80 CS80 Vintage Analog Synthesizer Rare & Superb

This one is in superb condition. It works but it needs to be tuned properly. It comes with a custom made road case with wheels. It also comes with a kenton midi retrofit kit. I’m thinking of doing the upgrade is it doesn’t sell.

It is a rare opportunity to grab this one. I am sizing down on synths, got too many. ” Link

cs80 “Released in 1976, this vintage Yamaha CS-80 is considered one of the most famous polyphonic analog synthesizers ever built.

The synth for sale has been used on records for several high profile artists including Primal Scream and Noel Gallagher.

It is in full working order except for one oscillator which is in need of tuning. It is in very good condition with only the usual marks and scratches you would expect with a vintage synth of it’s age and comes with it’s original top cover (not pictured).” Link

cs80 “Hi there i’m selling this on behalf of my parents who are selling up their studio. They’ve owned the synth for the last 35 years. It’s in full working order and the keyboard itself is in good condition has the odd mark and the case has a few scratches on it. We will consider sensible offers but this is a piece of musical history.” Link

cs-80 “I bought this fine instrument in 1980. It had one owner before, and the previous owner did not transport it. I briefly toured with it in a private tour that I cared for it myself, but the rest of the time it has been in my home studio, or in a pro Calzone road case. The road case has new foam inside, recently installed by Georgia Case Company. It has a remarkable quality preservation, especially the keyboard, and bank of controls, and the interior. There is a new/rebuilt power source, and also a new ribbon controller.

As far as I can tell, all of the functions, that control the sounds, i.e., portamento, glissando, filters, octave controls, etc., function correctly.

The instrument does need some work, and the facilities in Atlanta, were unequipped to fix the problems, due to the lack of knowledge and experience about the instrument. There are quite a few places in the USA that not only stock parts for this instrument, but are capable of totally fixing the unit to its original shape and function.

What doesn’t work:

The keyboard doesn’t correctly track the notes played, and will need competent calibration and tuning, and possibly extra parts replaced.

The ribbon controller is new, but it doesn’t function

The lowest key doesn’t sound at all

The sound settings all work except the Funky 3 setting which does not

There is no white noise functioning that I can tell

The after touch doesn’t work

All of the top bank, and preset functions work, except what I mentioned above

The cover, and sides of the unit are quite good cosmetically, although they have a few dings.
The bottom of the instrument has some dings on the vinyl, but is not real bad, for its age—only one place about a 3 inch square area is scuffed down to the wood. Most all of the scuffs are on the vinyl covering the instrument, and are small. There is one place on the back of the instrument brown wood area, that is scuffed.

The stand has been painted black but it works well. One of the attached screw handles is gone, but replaced by a bolt and washers.

All of these non-functioning items are fixable by a competent lab. I have adjusted the price to reflect the extra work needed.

Absolutely no returns, you are accepting it as an as is item, fully knowing that it needs work.” Link

cs80“A Yamaha CS80 Analog Synthesizer in working condition. I had it diagnosed in July by the renowned Analogue Lab in Long Island City, New York. There’s 1 dead voice (of 8) on bank one and 3 dead voices (of 8) on bank 2. The pitch bend ribbon needs to be repaired and all controls need to be cleaned. It could also use a full calibration/tuning to factory spec. Please see the photos. ” Link

cs80 “I’m sadly having to part with my beautiful Yamaha CS80 keyboard which has served me well in my home studio for the last 30 years or so. It is in good working condition though will be sold as seen, as I’m afraid I can’t be responsible for anything that happens to it once it’s left its long-time home. It’s never needed servicing in all that time, but is probably rather dusty. It comes with its sturdy metal ‘legs’ and also has its ‘top’ which is somewhat scratched, dusty and rusty round the hinges with a few small tears to the surface. The winning bidder must be able to get it safely down one flight of stairs (with bend)… it’s VERY heavy!” Link

“Rare classic refurbished yamaha CS80 in great working condition. Comes with Midi Kit not installed. These synths are very rare and expensive, sell $13K-$20K+ on eBay and usually without the Midi Kit.

The item has no pedals, no cover, no case, no legs and bag.” Link

-comes with original stand, pedals, casters and carrying case – all of which go into a massive anvil case in very good condition with new foam.
This synth was used by owner mostly between 1979 and 1982 and has spent many years in it’s case.

This CS80 is in excellent electronic and cosmetic condition, looks almost new and is probably the best you will ever find for sale.

Everything works as new with all knobs and sliders present and fully working.

A reluctant sale of a classic synth which needs to go where it will get more use than I have time to give.

Included is the original lid, music stand, manual, wah/expression and sustain pedals.

The power supply has been professionally removed and housed in a sturdy metal case to improve reliability/tuning and save weight.” Link

Prior to me originally buying this unit, it was examined by one of the foremost Yamaha CS-series techs on the east coast and described as electronically a 9+ out of 10 or nearly perfect with no noticeable deficiencies. The only reason it was not given a 10 is because one of the sliders had to be fixed before it was shipped to me. The internal electronics are flawless.

To match this, I put several thousand dollars in restoring it cosmetically top to bottom. It was in great shape to begin with but is now absolutely stunning.

First, all the hardware was carefully removed and the top was expertly re-covered in high quality tolex. The electronics were then delicately separated from the bottom case by the techs at MARS in Denver, Colorado so it could also be retolexed. This was a massive undertaking if you’ve ever seen the inside of a CS-80 and was done at great expense to me because of the level of precision and the sheer amount of time needed to do this correctly. The original felt inside the top cover was in such good condition that it was left as-is.

At this time the wood sides were removed from the unit and refinished by a master craftsman in Boulder, Colorado so that they practically shimmer and were clear coated to last a lifetime. All of the edge protectors and turnbuckles, as well as the handles and front clasps were re-chromed by Denver Bumper. **NOTE: A few of the pictures were taken before all of the hardware was replaced; if you want pictures with all of the hardware in place, I will gladly take some and send them. The bottom grates were straightened as much as possible without weakening them and professionally repainted.

Lastly the unit was completely reassembled into what has been described by several vintage synth aficionados as one of the best CS-80′s to be put up for sale in the last 10 years. The feel of the keyboard is perfect and all of the sliders and buttons operate and feel like the unit just came out of the factory in Japan. The ribbon controller on it works perfectly and the polyphonic aftertouch doesn’t require a bus to be parked on the keys for it to kick in… like some of these units do if they’re not well taken care of over time.” Link

“Up for auction is a Yamaha CS-80. Produced for a limited time in the late 1970′s, it has become one of the most sought-after synths for musicians of many genres.

It supports true 8-voice polyphony with two independent synthesizer layers per voice (16 oscillators total) and has a velocity-sensitive and pressure-sensitive, 5-octave weighted-action keyboard. Each voice of its completely analog voice structure has a single VCO, high-pass and low-pass filters with resonance, and separate envelope generators for the VCF and VCA. It also has a ribbon controller which allows for polyphonic pitch-bends and glissandos.

It has been used by artists such as Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Stevie Wonder, Phoenix, Genesis, Brian Eno, Phish, Daft Punk, RJD2 and Coldplay, on Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and the movie Blade Runner.

Don’t miss this chance to buy a Yamaha CS-80 and own what some consider to be the holy grail of synthesizers.

“We quickly tested this CS-80 for several minutes, and it appears to be in tune and in working order. However, not every preset and feature has been tested, so it may have remaining problems that we have not detected, though hopefully all it will need is just a tune up after shipping to its final destination. Also, the two previously-missing preset buttons (Memory 1 and Memory 2) have been replaced.

This CS-80 is sold as-is, with no returns.” Link

Cosmetically it does have some damage on the tolex and wood corners but the face of the unit is pretty good cosmetically. It doesn’t come with it’s legs or top cover. Please note that these are very sensitive synthesizers. It is likely that if the unit is shipped it may need to be tuned/calibrated again. Please note this. ” Link

“Vintage retro Yamaha cs80 synthesizer!

Has been in storage for 15 years. Mostly had studio use and used a little on stage in an NYC New Wave band in the early 1980s.

Appears to be in good condition—powers up, but hasn’t been tested more than that. All keys/switches etc seem to work. Comes with original instruction manual, legs, case for legs, two foot pedals. Leg case has a few punctures where the legs broke through, but other than that is in good shape.

This is a gorgeous instrument.” Link

” This is a one owner CS 80 and has been well taken care of all it’s life. I purchased this amazing machine in early 1979 at the old Westwood Music location in Los Angeles. I loaned it to Bonnie Raitt that summer for a couple of weeks until her keyboard player could get his own. That is the only time it has been on the road. In return for the use of CS 80 they bought me a custom Anvil road case worth over $1500 which is included in this auction. The synth has been used primarily in the studio over the years. Since I moved to Nashville in late 1989 it has been stored in it’s road case or used in my smoke free home studio. It still has the original legs and pedals and the vinyl case they fit in. I no longer have the original manual but one can be downloaded online.
Most of you looking at this auction know about this amazing instrument. If you don’t I suggest you google the Yamaha CS 80 as there is a wealth of knowledge about it online.
There were only about 2000 made worldwide with only about 1000 still around. The serial number on this machine is 1308.
The synth is fully functional with all original parts. It could probably use a tuning once it gets to its new location as it’s been a couple of years since it’s been tuned” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.
