cs30 “This is a 100 Volt unit. A 120V to 100V converter will be needed. They cost around $25 online. It has two oscillators with separate outputs, two voltage-controlled resonant filters, two voltage-controlled amplifiers and three envelopes. The fact it has 2 VFCs and 2 VCAs is rare for a monophonic synth. It also features a ring modulator, external audio triggering and a simple but useful 8-step sequencer for use as a sketch pad, pattern or arpeggio effect. You can play notes with a different tone while the sequencer plays which is very creative. The sequencer also has also outputs for triggering external gear, it uses the same Hz/Octave interface as Korg’s. Tons of modulation possibilities without patch cords!” Link

cs30 “Quick… before I change my mind…

Awesome Yamaha CS-30 Vintage Analog Synth with mods & original case

Has been converted to 240v, for UK (from 110v, Japanese)

You’ve got, or had, a Korg Analog… a Roland Analog… yet something else is needed?
THIS particular machine is THE Yamaha to have.
Released in 1977.

along with Crumar Spirit, it has to be one of the most complex (and confusing) synths ever made; apparently quite different from, and far more scarce than, its sister CS-30L. total cream on the eyes and ears.

as close as I can imagine to a modular, without actually being one. incredibly flexible.

I’ve heard that it’s one voice of a CS-80 but I don’t know if that’s true.

vintage class. huge sound. endless potential. fun and satisfying to use plus an investment for the future, far better than money in the bank!
very rare too! I won’t describe it too much, you’ve probably done your research already if you’re reading this.

most importantly, fully functional. just serviced and tested by acclaimed UK engineer.

in excellent cosmetic condition. no major problems to point out. I haven’t cleaned it for the photos because I might break something but you could do easily do that with a cotton bud; then it would be concourse condition. no stickers, scars or mess on the case either.

here is the description of the mods from the Japanese Engineer who implemented them.
It has to be the most tricked out CS 30 in the world. certainly that I’ve ever seen. Featuring everyone’s wish list of modifications, in addition to standard features:-

1) VCO SYNC SYNC ON/OFF switch is in VCO1 Section (VCO2 -> VCO1). And I’d like to intall two extra switches, one is to cancel PITCH BEND signal going to VCO1 and other is to cancel EG AMOUNT signal going to VCO1. These will enable you to enjoy great SYNC sweep sounds.

2) Sequencer Trigger In Your CS-30 will have additional jack (SEQ TRIG IN ) and Polarity switch on its rear panel. Everything works normally when you don’t plug any cable to this jack. When you plug cable to the jack, your CS-30 is in SEQ TRIG IN mode. When the sequencer is MANUAL mode, it accepts STEP signal to proceed the step. START/STOP button works as reset button, it turns to STEP1 anytime you press it (while running or not). When the sequencer is CLOCK mode, SEQ TRIG IN works as START/STOP button, and START/STOP button works as reset button, same as in MANUAL mode.
Polarity switch is to select TRIG type. When you send Roland and most of other manufacturer’s TRIG style (+V:ON/0V:OFF) turn this switch UP. When you send YAMAHA TRIG style (-V:ON/+V:OFF) or KORG style (0V:ON/+V:OFF) TRIGGER turn this switch DOWN.

3) VCF SERIAL ROUTING CS30 VCF2 has VCF1 HPF input (HPF only), but I’ll unfix it and make all three mode (HPF/BPF/LPF) routable to VCF2. The VCF mode is selectable at selector switch in VCA1.
About VCF serial routing mod, When you select VCF1 HP in VCF2…. Before mod, HPF signal from VCF1 goes to VCF2. After mod, You can select VCF1 mode that goes to VCF2 at VCA1 mode selector
Please try: 1) selecr VCF1 HP inVCF2 2) change the VCF1 mode selector in VCA1 and you will hear the audio change. EG and bender modulation routing cancel switches are located near KEY/SEQ switch in VCO section.

4) VCF CV IN This CS30 will have additional jack (VCF CV IN) and toggle switch (VCF destination selector, VCF1/VCF2/BOTH). The input is the one on the back, the one you can’t read the writing for, next to the seq trig in & yamaha logo, in my photo.

So: VCO SYNC ON/OFF switch (in VCO section) PITCH BEND to VCO1 cancel switch (near pitch bend) EG to VCO1 cancel switch (near EG selector switch) VCF CV destination select switch (rear panel, near VCF CV IN jack) Seq Trig signal poplarity switch (rear panel, near Seq Trig In jack) VCF CV IN jack (rear panel) Seq Trig In jack (rear panel)

A beautiful monophonic synth with extensive analog control and shaping.
It has two oscillators with separate outputs,
two voltage-controlled resonant filters,
two voltage-controlled amplifiers,
and three envelopes.
It also features a ring modulator, external audio triggering and 8-step sequencer.
You won’t catch this one being reissued in a hurry ;)” Link

cs30 “The Yamaha CS30 is an analogue keyboard synthesiser that was released in 1977. It is large and knob infested, with extensive analogue control and shaping. It has two oscillators with separate outputs, two voltage controlled resonant filters, two voltage controlled amplifiers and three envelopes. It also features a ring modulator, external audio triggering and a simple but useful eight step sequencer for use as a sketch pad, pattern or arpeggio effect. It does not have any on board effects, memory nor MIDI. Although it is just a monophonic synthesiser with a short forty-four note keyboard it offers a lot of programming flexibility.

Please note it has been kept in storage and has not been used for quite some time. Therefore it is not in good condition and in need of some attention, for example, the sequencer can be temperamental. It would suit an enthusiast who knows a bit about them, either for refurbishment or spare parts. There are no other items supplied, connecting cables, instructions etc. What you see in the photos is what you get. ” Link

yamaha cs30” Up for sale is a (1) vintage Yamaha CS-30 synthesizer. It’s a very nice sounding synth, the multimode filters and the sequencer are great to work with! The synth is in good working condition with some slightly crackling faders. The last owner installed a sequencer trigger input on it which is working fine. “Relisted after somone “accidentally” hit the buy now button.

The yamaha cs30 is a brilliantly flexible analog monosynth that has functionality that rivals a modular setup in terms of routing.

Pair that with the built in sequencer and keyboard, and a voice that is of the same heritage as the legendary cs 80.

This particular specimen is in great working condition for its age and comes with its original purpose built yamaha case. It was purchased from a leading tokyo synth shop within the last year.” Link

“The CS30 is a monster analogue synth made by Yamaha in the late 70s. This example is in overall excellent condition: it works flawlessly and cosmetically it’s excellent considering its age. It’s capable of “classic” synth sounds like leads and basses, but is far more versatile than many synths of its era, making it a sound designer’s dream machine – you can get everything from dark, atonal, clangorous ring-modded tones through spacey, high-pass-filtered drifts and washes to gritty FM’d snarls out of it! The level of control and versatility rivals a modular setup – there’s endless fun to be had here :-)

THE HIGHLIGHTS

• Two main oscillators with Saw, Square and Pulse waves, detunable
• Third Sine-wave oscillator
• Noise source
• Two filters, each capable of High Pass, Band Pass, Low Pass modes, both resonant
• Three envelope generators routable to filter, amplitude, pitch etc, invertable for a total of 5 envelope shapes
• Ring modulator
• External inputs and full CV control
• LFO with multiple wave shapes generated simultaneously, including Sample&Hold, Sine, Square, Ramp up, Ramp down
• Frequency modulation of Osc 1 by Osc 2
• 8-step sequencer / arpeggiator!
• Modulation and routing possibilities that FAR exceed most synths of this type” Link

“Up for sale is the classic Yamaha CS-30 vintage analog synthesizer.

The unit appears to be working fine, all the keys and knobs and sliders worked as I tested accordingly to the owner’s manual. Please note I’m not a technician at these, and I may have not tested every function as I only went through some basic testings. There is a bit of scratch noise on some of the knobs, which could do with some cleaning/servicing.

Cosmetically the unit is in nice condition as you can see. There are some minor wear and marks here and there, but nothing major. All original parts are there and in good shape. I’m including plenty of pictures so you can see exactly how it looks.

Comes in original Yamaha Hard Case as shown.

“Faulty Yamaha CS30 synthesizer for sale

Condition:
Unit turns on and produces sound.
Sequencer as well as keyboard seems to work (thou it sounds like keyboard sends only trig in, no CV).
There is no filter control over produced sound and it looks like only VCO2 works, not sure about the VCO1 (it might be VCF1 which blocks it’s output).

There are some marks on the body but it’s in OK condition. Please check the picture.

It is Japanese voltage unit – 100V, so you would need a transformer.

I don’t have enough time or wish to finish this project,
so based on it’s condition – this unit is sold AS IS!” Link

“Yamaha CS-30 analog synthesizer, excellent condition, has never left Japan, complete with the original hard case. Features dual oscillators, 44 keys and a built-in eight step sequencer.

The Yamaha CS line are sought after for their amazing sound. Good specimens are getting harder and harder to come by, but this one definitely qualifies as a GREAT specimen.

This unit works just fine with standard 110V USA power. There is NO RUST around the audio outputs (as is often found on older gear). The keys are nice and white with no cracks. The case has a few nicks here and there but is in excellent structural condition, especially for a unit that is over 30 years old. The handle covering is peeling a bit (see the photo on right lower side), but still works just fine.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

“This monophonic synth was a classic in its day, creating amazing analogue effects and sounds, and includes an 8 note analogue sequencer. It is covered in knobs and buttons giving you direct access to the sound sculpting features and routers without the need for patch leads. The knobs were regularly used with the pitch bender to add excellent effects to lead lines.

The condition is good, and commensurate with age. There are a few bumps and scratches which are not serious or unsightly. The synth works fine, but has some minor crackles / noise when some of the knobs are turned, which is inevitable with an instrument of this age (1980’s).

In a nut shell, it has two main oscillators generating various wave forms (square, ramp, saw tooth, pulse etc.) with a third sine wave generator to add depth or fatten the sound. It has a white noise generator and an external input which can be treated from the filter onwards. There is a ring modulator, Low frequency oscillator (LFO), three envelope generators(EG), pitch bender, portomento control and 8 note sequencer. The combinations and routing potential is vast with practically everything being able to be driven through the LFO and EGs.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

“Overall, the synth is in outstanding condition. There are tiny marks that prevent this from being listed as mint (i.e. as it left the Yamaha factory in 1977), but they are very minor. Just below the power switch, there are 3 tiny pinhead marks, which are only visible from certain angles as you will notice from the photographs attached. On the lower front panel below the keyboard, there is a small mark on each side where the synth has rested on a keyboard frame at some point. I have tried to photograph these, which was not easy, as they are only visible from certain angles.

All knobs, buttons and switches are present, original and function correctly.

All keys are clean and aligned and contact correctly.

The unit was tested today and the synth is working as it should be: 100% functional and the tuning is rock solid.

Power: This is a 100v model so will be shipped with the stepdown transformer I have used here in the UK.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

As you would appreciate this is a really old (over 30 years!) synth and as I have not played it for a long time, the condition is as expected.

It fires up okay. Makes noise and all controls responds though it makes noises when you turn the controls. All keyboard work.
There are 3 selector switches broken. Namely

VCO2 SEQ/KBD switch
VCA1 HOLD/EG switch
Sequencer CLOCK/MANUAL switch

You can play around a lot with it as it is, but you would really benefit from a proper resto or a service.

YAMAHA CS 30 Analog-Synthesizer & Step-Sequenzer

Up for auction is my Yamaha CS30, in excellent condition.

It has been well looked after and is a knob invested analogue synth,

with a built in 8 step sequencer for people who really love to tweak and get personal.

I bought this for it’s amazing sounds and onboard sequencer.

I’ve looked on youtube to give an idea of it’s potential, but not really

found anything to do it justice.

People have under rated this synth due to the MS20, which I’ve also had.

They both have their pro’s and con’s.

If you like lots of patch cables hanging out all over the place the MS20 is great.

But if you want a tidier more immediate synth the CS30 is definately for you.

I cannot describe all it’s functions but…..

It is built just like a hard wired version of a patch modular system.

Reviews have said it is an odd layout to get your head around…Not True.

Each section has to be looked at in vertical rows for adjustment as you head towards the A.D.S.R section on the right.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.
