THE SYNTH IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, THE SIDE PANELS ARE PERFECT THE CASE HAS PROTECTED IT VERY WELL. THERE ARE A COUPLE PATCHES OF RUST (PLEASE CHECK PHOTOS) ON THE FACE OF THE SYNTH, BUT IT’S NOT MAJORLY OFFENSIVE AT ALL, I’M SURE YOU APPRECIATE THE AGE OF THIS SYNTH, YOU HAVE TO EXPECT A LITTLE WARE. IT CERTAINLY DOESN’T LOOK NEW BUT IT’S IN GREAT SHAPE FOR IT’S AGE.

“This unit came from Japan and does not turn on unfortunately.
It has been opened and it appears that a power supply section needs some work (power diodes get really hot after a minute or so).
I have got another big project coming so need to work on it for several months now and there is no time to finish this guy.
The unit appears to be in good visual condition (both internal and external). The only small issue is that two red LEDs are missing from the patch panel (check picture).

This is essentially a CS40m without the Ring Modulator, The PWM Function routing and 8 less keys.
For those who are wondering… the “M” series CS synths do NOT sound like the standard CS’s like the 10,15,30 etc.
The m’s sound more like a Moog than any other. Smoother and to me, sits better in a mix.
These 20m’s are amazing for creating some unique sounds. Basses and leads for sure, but the modulation routing is very deep, Every VCO, the Filter and the EG has it’s own modulation type selector and amount. so you can essentially have a Sine wave, a saw wave, a S/H and a Tri wave going at the same time!!!! All clocked to the internal LFO Speed!
Everything works, It keeps pitch, there are a few pots that are a little scratchy, but just need cleaning.
Also has CV I/O!
And… yes it stores patches… internal battery was replaced last year.

This synth is a classic and works well in its current condition, but will require some repair to work perfectly.
* Almost Fully Functional. Known Problems:
o Envelope Relases do not engage. Notes end when key is lifted.
o “GL+” mod settings work reverse on Oscillators — all other mod settings including “GL-” work as they should
o Unit must warm up for a bit to play consistenly — leave it powered up for 30 to 45 minutes and it plays wonderfully…upon initial start up, however, there is scratchy/intermittent audio– this is probably an old capacitor issue, but you will have to repair this if you desire

“Up for auction is one Yamaha CS-20m synthesizer from 1979 in great condition! I didn’t really want to sell (I pulled it out of auction two months ago) but I need the money (so bid high!)
I had it looked over by a tech last week and while the synth is fully functional and ready to go, the user presets memory isn’t storing. The tech said this function may come back over time with use and is a minor issue. I’m sure many of you never had memory presets on your analog synths so it isn’t like you will miss the function. There’s another way you can store presets – on tape; you can load the preset data (non-audio) to a cassette tape. The sustain slider cap is broken off (included) but this does not affect the function of the sustain. There are minor scuffs here and there, all pictured.

Unlike some other synths of the era, you can store up to eight presets right on the board, which is AMAZING for an analog synth. Sure helps when you spent a lot of time dialing in a cool sound and want to retain it for later use. I’ve tested the memory preset buttons and all the knobs and sliders. The CV Gate function works (really cool), (used my korg kr 55 for that). Did not test the tape storage function but see no reason why that shouldn’t work as well, the synth is in great condition. The two very minor issues are: the LED light on preset #5 is not working, but this does not affect the ability to save a preset on button five and the sustain slider cap is broken off, but this does not affect the function of the sustain, although you may want to replace the slider if you want to put the slider cap back on. “All keys are in good shape and have been removed and cleaned. All pivots lithium lubricated. Power supply fully recapped with Xicon capacitors and voltages adjusted. All pots cleaned, no noisy audio path. The VCO’s and pitch wheel have been carefully scaled so please leave them alone. Memory storage works fine. Did not test the cassette patch download/upload interface but no reason to think it would not work as everything else does. Someone left batteries in the holder underneath which corroded so it has a new 2xAA holder. The corrosion was not kind to the cover plate, but that and the holder was the only casualty of that oversight by someone.
There are a few nicks on the wood, but there is one nasty scratch, and one corner is dented as shown in the photos. Other than that, it’s in surprisingly good shape as the CS series wood panels didn’t take road abuse very well (I toured with a new CS-40M back in the day). Happy to send some close-ups if you wish. Honestly, the graphics and paint are in remarkably fine shape over the entire synth (other than the scratch, not done by me), as are the knobs and sliders. It really is a fine specimen in general.
And it sounds great!!! Ballsy, synthy goodness. Would love to keep it but I just can’t justify it with a recent Prophet purchase and the wife’s reaction to same. No power cord, but it’s just the usual 3-pin variety found on every computer and monitor ever made.
