Six independent voices, each with two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) going to a multi-mode voltage controlled filter (VCF) then into
two sequential voltage controlled amplifiers (VCAs). Each voice can then be modulated by 5 ADSR envelope generators, 5 Low Frequency Oscilators (LFO’s),

“Times are tough! Here is my Oberheim Xpander on offer. It works great, tunes up with no issue and is in pretty good condition for its age (call it a conservative 8/10). There are some small paint chips here and there, there is a scratch across the main upper screen (see first photo, though it does not obscure viewing). The two end panels are missing one screw each and were like this when I purchased it. This does not cause any issues either but the end panels where the screws are missing do hang out a little from the main body of the synth. There is a nice bound copy of the manual included. “Oberheim Xpander. One of the most amazing syth’s ever made. This thing is soooo much fun to use and makes the coolest sounds. It’s in exactly the same condition as when I bought it years ago. Only a couple little issues, but works well work making music. Sometimes the left bottom knob is a little touchy, needs to be rotated a little more than it should. The bottom display occasional glitches. The display glitch is easily fixed with a little tap.
Massive modulation controls. Awesome filters. Sweet sound. I love the look of it too. Programming it is fun and simple.

When I test the Voices with my ear. 1-5 sound the same and voice 6 sounds differently.
Many of the presets the previous owner created have voice 5 and 6 turned off (put on different zones), so this was pretty much as it was when I bought it. I image the voices can be fixed, but I found it a quite cable synth as-is. I mainly used the single presets instead of multi though. ” Link

“Oberheim Xpander. If you’re looking at this, well… If you’ve never experienced it, this thing sounds FAT! It doesn’t get any better in my book (except maybe the Matrix 12 which is 2 of these). Cosmetically I give it 8.5 out of 10. There are a few scratches on the chassis as well as a couple of minor gouges in the wood on one side, really not that bad. Functionally, there is a slight hum from the power supply. This is mechanical and in no way affects the tonality or signal of the unit. It tunes up perfectly and passes all of it’s internal tests.

It was very well taken care of in a smoke free home studio. It also comes with an ATA style case that was given to me many years ago by the current keyboardist for Carlos Santana! His name is David K. Mathews. Prior to joining up with Santana, David was the organist for Etta James for 15 years. Before that he played keyboards with Tower Of Power for several years in the ’80′s!

“Oberheim Xpander gehört im jeden professionellen Tonstudio zur Standardausstattung. Das Gerät befindet sich im einen sehr guten Zustand und wurde regelmässig durch darauf spezialisierte Firmen gewartet. Das Gerät wurde nur im Rauchfreienstudio genutzt. Ich bin der Erstbesitzer des Gerätes. Es handelt sich um die hochwertige amerikanische Version. Folgende EPROMs sind installiert: Main Processor 1.0 – Voice Version 1.2 – Cassette 1.0. Nach meiner Erfahrung läuft die amerikaische Version am stabillsten mit diesem Betriebsystemstand. Die gerasteten lauten Originalencoder wurden durch neue leichtgängige Encoder ( Endlosregler) ausgetauscht. Die Original Encoder werden als Ersatzteile mitgeliefert. Die Lieferung erfolgt sehr gut verpackt mit der Originaldokumentation. Es handelt sich um Originalbilder des Gerätes. Es handelt sich um ein privates Angebot. Rücknahme und Gewährleistung ist ausgeschlossen.
Die sechs Stimmen können im MIDI-Monomode gespielt werden, wobei jede Stimme einen eigenen Sound wiedergibt und individuell auf Controllerdaten (Pitchbend, Modulation…) reagieren kann. Mit der Matrix-Modulation können mit 15 Quellen 22 Destination moduliert werden. Die Idee ist offenbar, die freien Verbindungsmöglichkeiten eines Modularsystems nachzustellen. Obwohl hier zuerst mal die klassische Struktur, VCO=VCF=VCA mit EGs, vorzufinden ist, können mit der üppigen Ausstattung und der Matrix-Modulation (siehe unten) neue Verbindungen/Modulationen erstellt werden. The only minor functional issue is that the first modulation matrix button, one of the lower soft buttons and patch selector 1 button requires a bit more force to register a push, but they all do work. Everything works great on this machine and everything passes the self tune tests. The only issue at all is that the VCO1 button might need to be pressed several times in order to access the VCO page. wie bei keinem anderen Synth. Er läßt FM Klänge zu und allein durch seine etwa 20 Filtervarianten unzählige Grundklänge.
Sein Markenzeichen sind seidige warme Klänge die ein gewisses Eigenleben besizen . Er eignet sich ideal als Kontrast für harte Klänge.

“Oberheim Analog Synthesizer. In beautiful condition and perfect working order. This is the American version which is the best. It is switchable voltages for 110/240 volts so will work worldwide.
The synth is in excellent cosmetic condition. There is a small lifting of the front plate by a few mm in the top left corner. It also has a few small marks on the metal panel edges that have been touched up by the previous owner, hard to notice.
I used this for a studio project that is not finished. It has had studio use only and never been gigged, and kept in a non-smoking studio.

An Oberheim Xpander up for sale here. The king of the old analog polysynths.
Sure, some polys had more voices, some had hardware envelopes, some had more knobs, buttons, and sliders.
However, none had 15 different filter modes, cv/gate inputs for all the voices plus MIDI as well. Throw in 5 envelopes, 5 LFOs, 4 Ramps, 3 Tracking generators, 2 VCOs, and a partridge in a pear tree PER VOICE! and the specs even put some modern VAs to shame.
All that crap doesn’t mean anything if it didn’t sound great. The Oberheim sound of the 80′s was heard all over the music spectrum. The Xpander had a great sound and was expressive to play because of all the modulation routings and control options.
This particular Xpander is in very good physical shape. It’s working 100%. As you can see from the pix, the chain advance jack is not original, but it is working fine. I also recapped the power supply *and the entire voice card* (which is something like 70+ electrolytic caps replaced. It was a royal pain, but I did it out of love). I also replaced the old encoders with brand new ones. These are not some 25 year old encoders sprayed with some cleaner for a temporary fix. These are brand new, with 10′s of thousands of revolutions left on them. I also took apart every switch and cleaned the contact bars and connector metal for all of them. The result of all of this work is an Xpander that powers up clean, tunes perfectly after only being on for 5 minutes or so, and sounds as close to what it did back in 1984 as you can get.” Link
“Oberheim Xpander Analog Synthesizer. Serviced last year by Logitronics. Has the power supply rebuilt at the same time which is the most important upgrade for Xpanders. Its a 6 voice polysynth or 6 monosynths or a combination of both. It has full midi as well as 6 cv/gate inputs and a trigger input for envelopes and lfos.
Works great except voice 3 sometimes fails the tuning test after the xpander has been switched on for a while. I cant hear any difference in the voice in use. If this bothers you it is possible to disable this voice and use it as a 5 voice. This can usually be fixed permanently by replacing a $50 CEM chip that are easily available on ebay.
Cosmetic conditon is ok. There are some scratches on the front metal bevel, and some small marks on the side wood panelling, but the control panel is in excellent conditon with no marks.
All the encoders work great and the display is bright.

“Ich verkaufe hier einen Oberheim Xpander mit User Manual, Service Manual und Netzkabel. Es ist das letzte Exemplar, welches vom Synthesizer Studio Bonn (Dirk Matten) importiert und verkauft wurde. Es ist das letzte und somit aktuellste Gerät in Deutschland – vermutlich Europa. Das Gerät wurde nie auf der Bühne eingesetzt. Bei dem Xpander handelt es sich um die originale und bessere in USA Los Angeles gebaute Version (230V Ausführung für EU).
