This synth was designed by the guys at EMS, but released in Kit form under the banner Powertran.
As used by Joy Division.

All working apart from the key contact array is missing (See photo), so cannot be played from the keyboard.
Works with CV/Gate (1.2V/Oct I think rather than 1V/Oct or Hz/V), or could be modded with a new contact arrangement.

Key contacts on these things were the real weak point, as the contacts were almost impossible to access properly to clean.” Link

powertran“Brought into the world in 1978 by the now defunkt POWERTRAN CYBERNETICS COMPANY. Published as a DIY synth in the electronics today magazines from the same era. The guts of a 2000 have now been mounted in a new wooden case. Keybed has now gone. Midi has now been added that allows connection to other midi enabled devices. The 2000 uses a non conventional control voltage making it difficult to add normal midi2cv converters. This module employs special circuits that allow accurate tuning of span and width of the connected keyboard. These controls can be seen in the pictures showing the rear of the module. 2 seperate switches on the top of the synth to defeat external vc and gate control. A ‘learn’ button and midi activity l.e.d are mounted at the front, so too is an l.f.o rate indicator. New control knobs fitted, all controls serviced and 100% responsive. Some control knobs are a little wobbly when rotated.” Link

transcendent 20000“A rare collectable piece of equipment from the now defunkt POWERTRAN CYBERNETICS. These synths were originally sold as kits complete right down to the last nut and bolt. Designed by the legendary TIM ORR of EMS fame. A fully analogue synth designed on a single circuitboard. Gone now is the keyboard and original case, this one has been re boxed in a wood case. Now incorporates midi control that now allows connection to a computer sequencer or whatever midi device you like. Midi incorporates a push button learn facility for channel recognition. Midi control can be programmed via a PC and suitable cable allowing key span and adjustments. There are controls at the rear that allow precise tuning of octave width and pitch offset. Software links and some information will be provided on CDROM regarding these setup procedures. Now has a full compliment of moog style knobs however, the shafts that hold the knobs have been sanded to get these knobs to fit making the control turn slightly wobbly. All knobs work though with no noise, all have been cleaned. Incorporates an LFO rate indicator on the front panel. The original key switches used in the T2K become unreliable and can be a complete nightmare to set them all up correctly. With midi control this problem is eliminated. This unit plays exactly as a T2K should. A great sounding filter with a warm quality close to moog ladder designs. Incorporates band pass and low pass responce. Only genuine high quality components used when repaired and converted. Pictures show rear of the unit, midi in and thru sockets will be labelled before despatch.” Link

“I have owned this synth for around 10 years – it has never been gigged, has been in a smoke free studio and has been in storage for the last 4 years or so – hence me selling.
I used it for atmospheric ‘BBC radiophonic workshop style’ atmospheres and sounds rather than melodies – and it excels at these things. The poweful filter is also capable of some very fat sub bass sounds as well, so I would say it is great for some speaker rattling basses as well.
I had it professionally serviced around 6 years ago – details to the buyer – just needed some cleaning up – strucurally this unit is sound.
I have noticed that the power cable may need some attention and perhaps the “low level output” as well. ” Link

“The Powertran Transcendent 2000 was an English synthesizer designed by Tim Orr, also notable for his work at EMS and Akai.
The synthesizer was used by Joy Division and New Order and is reportedly the first synthesizer Joy Division used, they then went on to use the Arp Omni.

I have had this synth for around 5 years and it has been used regularly in my home studio. I have recently moved to Brockley, South London and have decided to part with the beautiful machine. It is in a well used condition but unfortunately during my move a fault has occurred. Everything works as before (all functions, oscillators, noise generator, filter etc), a little dusty but still good for a keyboard so old, apart from the keyboard is only functioning on the top 5 keys. The rest of the keys all play the same note. I am aware that this has something to do with the contacts between the keys and the PCB board, and is a common fault on this synth.
When this synthesizer was released it was released as a DIY project, so therefore it is occasionally a bit temperamental so not suited for live use.” Link

“A rather nice piece of synthesizer history from the now defunkt Manufacturer powertran. An english company selling many electronic devices as kits. Most of these designs were posted in the ETI electronics magazines as complete projects. The synth could be purchased ready made or in kit form. The kits were complete right down to the last nut and bolt (including the wood case). The synth was designed by tim orr, an ex synth designer at EMS. The Synth circuits were designed on a single circuitboard, all discreet components. The synth is highly bendable, if you so desire!. This unit has had several modifications, one of which should be apparent in the photo’s. The keybed has been shortened slightly to accommodate a pitch and modulation wheel. The modulation wheel controls the LFO rate. Synth has an indicator light giving a visual indication of LFO frequency. The pitch wheel performance is good (but not fantastic). 2000s original pitchbend control was mounted on top of the synth… terrible place to put a pitch bend!!. Now it’s more hands on and in easy reach. This is certainly a great synth for those classic analogue squelchy bass lines and effects. The filter has switchable Band Pass and Low Pass settings, comes close to moogs ladder designs for warmth and response. Very rare in this sort of condition and has become a desirable collectable piece of history that has true analogue circuits, nothing virtual……looks great too!” Link

“This is a classic old mono synth designed by Tim Orr of EMS in the early 1980′s and was sold as a kit. Not too many of these left in good working order now and they are highly sought after by those wanting real analogue sound with knobs and buttons to play with! THis example has had a couple of mods to improve the signal to noise ratio on the outputs and the addition of an LFO LED light on the front panel that flashes in time with the LFO rate. I had one of these as a teenager and got hold of this one again recently with a view to making some mods of my own but time is not with me so I have to let it go now. The key contacts can be temperamental on these but this one is pretty good and currently they all work.

Also included is a paper and CD (.pdf) copy of the original Electronics Today magazine articles that describe all the processes as well as construction details. Very useful – I learnt more about how it works for these than I ever knew back in the 80′s!” Link

“You probably already know what this synth is all about, but for those that don’t here’s a little background. Designed by Tim Orr in the early 80′s (formally EMS). The Synthesizer was sold ready made or in kit form. Most of the kits are badly put together with loose keyboards and casework. Tim Orr was also responsible for the transcendent polysynth also available as a kit. This kit was very complex and finished units are rare to say the least. Late 80′s saw the demise of powertran and all of it’s kits but the legacy lives on. The synth we have here has had a full service with everything functioning as it should. Keys are clean, everything is tight and built well. All analogue electronic single circuitboard design. This synth has a great sounding filter with real warmth, similar to the ladder designs used in the moogs. The filter has sweep controls with band pass and low pass filtering. A VCF Envelope control with single shot and hold facility. The filter has a characteristic all of it’s own!. The synthesizer is capable of some amazing squelchy bass type sounds and effects. I could probably go on all day describing the facilities so i think it best to google ‘transcendent 2000′ to get a full run down of it’s features. I will include the original schematic on CDROM, it’s not a great copy but still readable. One control knob has a scratch on it (pictured), The octave switch does not have the tactile ident like all the other but is still fully working. I am being a bit picky over the condition but i think it best to mention everything.” Link

“This has been sitting around for 10 years doing a grand amount of nothing, found it in a mates attic when they rented a house and it gave me one hell of a shock when i plugged it in… should of checked for a fuse aye? anyway, house rewired and me a bit less frazzled, with a fuse in place this baby sort of works. I don’t know a whole lot about it so here’s some blurb from a website form some one who does.
