This particular one is even more special then any other one, because it has had custom made mahogany ears/sides just like classic analog synths, you will not find one like this anywhere else. The sides were made and fitted by a highly skilled/qualified guitar luthier, so you can be assured that the job is done to a very professional standard. The machine has also been serviced by a professional, so everything is in perfect working order, which is rare with a unit this old!

“Up for bid is my ROLAND TR-808 SERIAL# 010698 drum machine. This is from my personal collection. Still have the original front panel protective cover. Fully functional. Great working condition. Rarely used in my smoke free home studio. Only used every couple of months just to exercise the knobs, buttons. It’s always covered when not in used. The previous owner was a close friend of mine. She owned since the early 90′s.
FUNCTIONALITY: Everything works. All knobs,buttons, switches works. Sync perfectly with my Jupiter 8. My tech checked on it about a 1 1/2 year ago just to make sure that everything is in good working order. Button #2 is a little loose (on the top)-see picture#12, no affect on function. Works fine.
PHYSICAL CONDITION: The plastic ring on the edge of couple of small knobs (1 level & 1 tuning) is peeling off. Has a very minor small chip on the corner(see pix 11). Again no affect on function, purely cosmetic. The plastic cover on the serial# label is still attached. The original plastic protective cover is worn out a little bit. I hope the pictures describe the physical condition. There are minor scratches,scuffs,marks, & small dings but overall it’s in very good cosmetic shape considering its age.” Link

No problems, no issues, all buttons and switches work perfectly. The only very slight cosmetic note is that the paper inserts for the START and TAP buttons have yellowed a little with age/light. An easy replacement would be to take the cap off and replace with a new piece of card or paper with the relevant legends printed on via your printer. Otherwise, as new. No visible scuffs or scratches.

“I just paid $260 to have it serviced, they check it out and replaced the the start/tap and I/F variation switches that were acting up, they also cleaned all pots and make sure it was working as it should. All knobs, buttons and swicthes are in good condition and working fine (Button 6 needs more pressure but works fine) Tempo and Volume knobs are not the originals but matching ones will cost a few bucks online if you ever want to change them. I did see the need for it.” Link
“TR-808 with Kenton KADI port installed (needs Kenton KADI device or expansion to Pro-2000 to be used). New 16 step buttons and pots by Technology transplant were installed, to replace few of the original ones. The originals are included with the purchase, so you can always return to 100% original if necessary (they’re all still functional although not as good as new ones). The start/stop button is sometimes not as sensitive as it should be, but still it works. This is a common problem with 808′s and is mentioned here, so it will not come as a surprise. There’s a input for start /stop in the back, so pedal or sequencer can be used. Also, there are 3 gate trigger outputs that can be sequenced from the 808. Very good with other analog gear (such as drum modules or synths). Also sync output for Roland gear (no midi without KADI device).

“Die Roland TR-808 ist DIE 80er Jahre Drum Machine. Ihr unverkennbarer Sound hat die Musik dieses Jahrzehnt
geprägt wie kaum ein anderer Drum Computer.
Ich habe die 808 vor ca. 12 Jahren gebraucht gekauft und im Grunde nur ein mal eingesetzt. Über die Vorgeschichte
weiß ich leider nichts. Die Potis der Einzelsounds habe ich soeben reinigen lassen da sie ziemlich kratzten. Jetzt
funktionieren sie einwandfrei. Nur beim Master Volume hört man ein leises Kratzen. Bei 4 Levelreglern fehlen die
kleinen roten Plättchen (siehe Foto). Die Taster 2 & 3 fühlen sich etwas wackelig an, sie sind wahrscheinlich mal
geklebt worden, und funktionieren. Ansonsten sieht die 808 Äußerlich noch sehr gut aus.” Link

- Eine Schraube fehlt (siehe Bilder). Ist aber nicht tragend!!

Dabei wurden keine Löcher ins Gehäuse gebohrt sondern die Sync Buchse modifiziert so das sobald das Midi Kabel eingesteckt wird die 808 sich im Midi Modus ist.
Zieht man das Midi Kabel ab befindet sie sich im Originalzustand und kann dann auch über einen sync-midi Konverter betrieben werden.
Der Midi Kanal kann über Schalter im Inneren eingestellt werden(dafür muss das Gehäuse mit ein paar Schrauben geöffnet werden).
Im Moment ist Kanal 8 eingestellt.Bedienungsanleitung fürs Midi-Kit wird mitgeliefert.
Einen Mangel hat das Gerät,wie man auf dem letzten Foto sieht ist ein kleines Stück Plastik abgebrochen.

We are a domestic hi-fi shop and our knowledge of studio kit is limited, but we have tested it and discovered the following. It powers up and the lights come on but it is not currently possible to program rhythms in. It appears to be in a crashed state.
The general cosmetic condition is fairly good. There are of course some small marks here and there, as would be expecting from a machine of this age. Please examine the photos to get a better idea of the condition.

The unit is in rough cosmetic condition(see pics), and while it does power up, I couldn’t get it to do anything else.
There is some paint on the front and sides but it comes off easily.

“This tr808 kicks a*s. It has blue leds, midi and its was modified to fit a rack. Most of the people dont have space to put this kind of table top gear. Some purists hate the fact this is has been modified. It worked well for me and I got the point of buying 3 of them, now i am only keeping what i need so i can get myself a nice ssl or neve board… I dont know how to program the machine, i used it only via midi.. The conditions is great except for the rack modification that as you can see in the picture is nice but its not the best.. Come on! I personally thinks that its has a mojo but its up to you to decide…” Link
“For sale I have a vintage Roland TR-808 drum machine. Classic analog sounds!
The machine is a euro voltage version, but a converter for US voltages is included!
The machine has new ALPS buttons, so there isn’t any sticky or double triggering problems, they were installed on the original 808 PCB, not a clone. The button caps are also new, so they look spectacular.
Everything works perfectly, no static when turning the knobs. All of the knobs have the original colored caps as well.
The case is in good condition, with a few scratches, etc (see photos). The battery door is a plastic replacement (not original).
The machine is sold as-is in working condition.
I pack things extremely well with multiple layers of bubble wrap, plenty of packing peanuts and a good strong box.” Link

Has a midi upgrade ($300 value) which allows you to trigger its sounds by midi – so you can combine the best of both worlds by triggering its sounds from the computer.
The plastic side rails are damaged, each at one corner (see picture) and one or two of the screws are missing. I imagine you could order replacements for them without too much hassle.
The Start/Stop button on the sequencer sticks a bit and one of the sequencer buttons doesn’t go down as well as the rest, but the difference is subtle. You quickly get the hang of it so that you can press it in a certain place and it functions fine. Other than that, it works and sounds great. These buttons are replaceable and they sell them on ebay.” Link

“Up for bidding is the Roland TR-808. Items still in good condition other than missing two little screw one on the center top in 1st photos and the 2nd screws on the 4th photos where the input and out-put is. Than on the photos #9 it show that one of the electrical prong is missing. It showing 2 instead of three which is a ground anyway. This will not effects any function of the instruments. Now other than that. This is one great machine of it’s age, works as it should and it’s not missing any buttons or knobs.” Link
“This item shouldn’t need any introduction, it is of course the most iconic drum machine ever made, even my grandmother recognises the sounds it creates! Made by roland in 1980 for musicians to make demos with, it was incredibly unsuccessful at the time and only 12,00 were ever made, it is unknown how many of them still survive today, but you can be sure as hell that they are a rare collectors item.
