The only other thing that is wrong with the unit is the start/stop button needs a harder push to get going. That means the internal contact needs replacing, which should be an easy fix. To make up for this, I have included a foot pedal which can be plugged into the start/stop jack in the back to be used for this. The cosmetics on this machine are Near Mint condition and the knobs are clean when you turn them…..the one flaw is that the start/stop button has a bit of a contact issue and only works if you wiggle it. “I bought this over fifteen years ago for my home studio, and hardly used it. It is in great condition, and it works fine, with all the LEDs operational, although I’ve forgotten all the details of how to program it, so I have not tested all the functions, but the sounds come out fine.
The photographs in the listing are of the unit for sale.
When I bought it, it had a non standard “speed” control knob, and I replaced that with another non-standard one which looks much closer to the original. The potentiometer for the speed control has been also replaced, I still have the original (broken) one that came in the unit, and I will include it for your own reference. The colored plastic tops on some of the small volume knobs (not the knobs themselves, just the plastic colored inserts) have been replaced with non-original plastic inserts, but you would not know by looking at them, as they closely match both the color, shape and material of the original inserts, as you can see from the photographs.” Link

Technisch
- Das Gerät lässt sich nur noch per Sync starten.
Ob es an einer Funktionsstörung der Start / Stop Taste oder etwas anderem liegt, weiss ich nicht.
Per Sync klappt es jedoch problemlos.
- Der Master Ausgang ist stumm. Die Einzelausgänge funktionieren jedoch.
- Die Low Conga, Hi Conga, Cowbell klingen nicht so wie sie sollten. Zu hören im Video.
- Um die Taste mit der Nummer 4 zu drücken ist Geduld von Nöten. Mehrmaliges Drücken ist erforderlich (siehe Video).
- Der ein oder andere Drehregler kratzt etwas.

Its general condition is quite good; there are some scratches and whatnot for a machine of this age. Aside from that there’s no dirty buttons, memory problems or anything wrong with the playback; it works exactly as intended. Some of the toggle switches for the toms are a bit tough to move but work nonetheless. It was serviced a few years back for its snare voice; obviously everything is in perfect working order. Its tempo knob is off an old DR55.

“After having owned this wonderful machine for some 20 years, my present circumstance forces me to sell it. As you can see from the pictures it is in very good condition, top, bottom, sides and back are remarkably well preserved. In fact it is as close to perfect as you will ever find. All functions and controls are working as they should.
The Kadi Interface was installed about 10 years ago to address the 808 with MIDI and the Kenton Pro-KADI Unit. I chose this option because it was the least intrusive modification nessasary to accomplish my musical goals. A Pro KADI unit can be purchased new for around $250.00 and will essentially “midify” this unit for you. The Kenton MIDI retrofit makes it very usable and included is the manual from Kenton. So you can tell that this is a well maintained example, all the coloured switches have been replaced as these are the things that go on these drum machines but if anyone wants to revert back to the original state, the originals switches are also included. Overall, I really do not think you would ever find a better example..

I am the second owner and have owned this 808 since 1991. It has never been serviced or modified while in my possession and has been taken care of very well.
All lights work and knobs are smooth. Recording and playback of patterns work fine. Plastic overlay is included. Start/stop button can use a cleaning. I/F variation toggle is missing. One decay knob is missing white cover (no functional problem). Volume and other faders can use a spray/cleaning to be smoother but all currently work. Overall this 8 0 8 is working great I just verified recording a pattern on it.” Link
“It is with great sadness that I am selling my TR-808 which I have only used once since I purchased it (note I am not the first owner). Unfortunately, it is simply a display piece for me (an amazing one!) as I do not have time to use it, and something this good deserves to be used.
This item is in mint condition for something that was sold in 1981. I have attached super sized pictures so you can see for yourself. I do not think there would be a better one in the world, and something so rare, provided it is cared for properly by its next owner, will see significant appreciation in years to come. No scuffing near pots, no visible scratches that I can see (check the photos) – looks like it has never been used.

“I have previously owned 5 of these over the years, and this is the cleanest one cosmetically I have seen, and comes complete with the transparent dust overlay which is very rare in itself (1st picture shown).
There are no missing coloured caps off the knobs (a common problem with these machines).
The top front panel is in unbelievable near mint/mint condition, it still has retained it’s matt appearance, many of these have been polished by dealers to make them shine falsely.
The small front lower part of the casing has some pit marks which can be seen in the (3rd and 4th pictures).
The unit is in full functional order and has been tested recently, these machine are built like tanks, and I’ve never had any problems with any of the ones I’ve owned, with all buttons a knobs in full working order.

One minor detail is the on/off switch cracked so it was taped (very cleanly) to prevent it splitting any further, these can be purchased for about £10 so easy fix if it annoys you (It didn’t me!)

“Selling an iconic machine. The sounds this synth makes, and it is a synth, have changed my life. Owning my first one basically ruined all drum machines for me. If it wasn’t an tr-808 it was less than.. This has some mods. First it has the kick tonal and decay mods. They are the two knobs between the midi jacks and the switch. The switch works with the tone. I am guessing 3 octaves? The other 4 knobs are a low pass filter on some sounds. The low pass filter can take it from gating cuts on your high hats to a clocked Q distorter then back to the stock sound.
I cannot say it is full functional because of the filter mod simply because it can not get back to the original config and sound for clap, clave, ma/rs and a little on the cowbell.. If you are saying “so what” you were obviously not born until after this this box was. Personally I would remove the lpf and just keep the total mods.” Link

I am the original owner and the machine was used in a studio environment for one album in the 80′s. The machine was stored in a plastic bag for about 25 years.
This unit is in excellent condition for its age, works perfectly and has been recently serviced. The pots and switches were cleaned and the multi-color Rhythm Pattern Switch/LED board was replaced. Comes with the protective plastic cover, Operation Card, Factory Programmed Rhythm Patterns book, Introduction manual, Operation manual and the Service manual with color circuit board layouts and schematic.
The TR 808 is the famous beat-box used for R&B, hip-hop, RAP as well as dance and techno music. Solid bass kicks, unique snares and that familiar claps sound that made it famous. The 16 drum sounds include the kick, snares, low/mid/hi toms, low/mid/hi congas, rim shot, claves, hand clap, maracas, cowbell, cymbal, open and closed hi-hat and accent. All of the sounds can be varied in pitch and have individual outputs. Equipped with Roland’s DIN Sync, start-stop and fill footswitch jacks. “The time has come for me to sell my TR-808. This is a legendary drum machine and here are the specifics of mine:
- The sound quality is amazing and it is overall in great cosmetic condition. There is some sticker residue on the bottom that was there before I owned it. It could probably be removed easily with an adhesive cleaner.
- I’ve tested each output and they are all loud and clear. On some outputs there can be some static right when it’s turned on, but after 10 mins of warming up I was able to turn all knobs (volume/tone/decay/etc) and have no noise on any output.
- The buttons/knobs/switches are in great condition. The main on/off button for the sequencer sometimes takes an extra push, but nothing out of the ordinary for a machine of this age.
- The previous owner installed the MIDI mod so it can be sequenced from a computer. I’ve used it as a sound module with Protools and it works great. ” Link

I purchased it new on a trip to Hong Kong in 1983.
I used it in my studio for about a year before moving on to a sample based drum machine.
It has been boxed since then. (Not original box)
This is the cleanest example I have seen on ebay. Everything still works perfectly, knobs, switches, lights etc.

Since I purchased it in Hong Kong the voltage/plug are for 220 volts. I have used it with a 117 volt adapter (included with sale) and
never had any issues with it.

“Roland TR-808 Analogue Drum Machine, with original flight case, plastic cover sheet, owners manual, and a Kenton Kadi conversion kit.
This machine is in excellent condition, and it has served me very well in my small home studio for the last 15 years. It was serviced by Tony Allgood of Oakley Sound in October 2008, where the 16 coloured tact switches were replaced, and the power supply was re-capped. He also gave it a good looking over, as I thought that the bass drum was playing up, but apparently that is just the sound of the 808 – massive!!! It has not been used much since its last service, but I have powered it up to check it all out, and everything seems to be okay for a machine of this age. Batteries have been replaced regularly, and it also comes with an original Roland plastic cover sheet, which fits over the top of the 808, and has kept it in excellent cosmetic condition. The plastic cover sheet is a little tatty, and it can be seen in a couple of the photographs.
I had previously installed a Kenton Kadi kit, which is included in the sale, but when I powered up the 808 and programmed a few rhythms into it, it didn’t play the hand claps or hi-hats as they should, although sound was still coming out, just a bit quieter and a little oddly. I then played the 808 via my Kenton Pro2000 Kadi port, and all of the sounds worked perfectly. I decided to remove the Kadi port, and since then the 808 has been playing all of the sounds perfectly well. The Kadi port is included in the sale, so if you want you can re-install the kit so that you can play the 808 over midi. That is if you have a Kenton Kadi controller, and you are reasonably good at soldering! The down side is that removing the Kadi port has left an unsightly hole in the right side panel of the 808, but this does not affect the sound or performance in any way.
The 808 comes with the original manual, and also the drum patterns book, allowing you to program in the original factory preset patterns, and write down your own patterns too! I am also including with the sale, the original Roland TR-808 flight case. Unfortunately the original inside foam inserts are no longer there, as I used to use this case to carry a Moog Prodigy. You could however take it along to a flight case specialist such as Swan Flight, and get some foam inserts put in to make a great and very cool case. The flight case is solid, but obviously does have a few marks and scratches as you can see in the photos.” Link
