“The top is about as clean is it comes. The battery compartment and outside of the case area around battery has acid burns. I popped it open and verified there was no acid on the board. The acid only comes out the audio out port now.
All keys play and the patterns saved play. I prefer the x0xb0x. It is as is but I believe it to be fully working.” Link
“Roland TB-303 Devilfish with MIDI and an alu case
Serial #158, Version v.2.1D
Introduction:
I have owned several TB-303’s over the years and to this day remain charmed by its certain je ne sais quoi. They are however, in my opinion, excellent one trick ponies; I for one love the audio that comes out of TBs, but tire of it very quickly. For me that was the immediate attraction to the Devil Fish set of modifications from Robin Whittle in Australia.
The aluminium case:
I bought this Devilfish from a guy in Germany sometime in the Spring of 2004 and shortly thereafter, I managed to persuade Martin Rothlisberger from Switzerland to custom make me one of his amazing machined anodised aluminium cases! As you’ll see from the various pics below, it is custom machined with this TBs serial number on the back. It took A LOT of persuading to get this case! For the past few years Martin has not been making any more cases. I did get an email recently from him where he suggested he was making more, but they won’t look like this because Martin no longer has access to a 4D capable CNC machine. So basically it’s no longer possible to have that lovely slanting area by the tactile pushbuttons, which also means no ‘TB-303’ lettering can be engraved there.
The fitment of the TB-303’s delicate electronic innards into the case is a very tricky affair, they are carved from solid blocks of aluminium by a computer, and thus super accurate; the problem lies in the TB itself, which hailing from the 80’s is not so accurate. Some of the potentiometer positions can subtly vary, and there are other pitfalls, for example the wires can get pinched in different places. Thankfully Robin Whittle himself took on the task of fitting the electronics into the case! Subsequently, this TB has been fitted to the highest standards possible.
OTT ? You bet!:
Robin strikes me as the classic genius engineer and in implementing the modification, I guess his priority is in making sure everything works, not necessarily whether it looks beautiful. When I got the machine back, there were a few (admittedly) minor things that I wasn’t so happy with; things like knobs scraping against the case metalwork and LED’s not being quite high enough to poke through the case metalwork. I have a lot of experience doing fiddly solder work, thus went about putting things right myself. Amidst this endeavour, I installed 2 by 2 carbon fibre washers (I had a specialist firm make them to my specifications), the latest sealed tactile switches (from Analogue Renaissance – see this link), an even larger capacity lithium battery than the one Robin uses as stock for the bank memory back up and the rear of the case attaches via precision machined titanium bolts. It’s a functioning piece of design / art.
Obsessive? Um, yeah… probably ![]()
I was actually really obsessive… Unhappy with the use of cut pieces of leather to increase the height for the set of the six uppermost knobs, I acquired some super expensive 3mm PTFE sheet and machined my own knob shaft inserts from it. Plus rather than use Blutack to ‘glue’ the knobs on to the shafts, I used what plumbers do – a small piece of flexible PTFE tape which works really beautifully for this purpose. Perhaps most practically, I have implemented a delightfully simple but important idea that buffers the main PCB board, in the event that the machine ever falls face flat, which due to the design by Roland, does leave the machine quite susceptible to a cracked PCB. Some of the ideas I have shared with Robin (to his interest!), others I have not as yet, but I suspect he and other TB enthusiasts would find them interesting, if not a touch obsessive
Why I am selling:
As the numerous pedantic personal touches might indicate, I really thought that this Devil Fish would be a treasured possession of mine forevermore. Alas, times and tastes change, and nowadays I have a completely different creative direction that the Devil Fish doesn’t really fit into. I figure it’s a win win to place it for sale – someone else out these would get to enjoy it and I could plough the funds from its sale into equipment more in keeping with my present direction.
Wait time:
For the winning bidder, will of course be almost non existent!
But you should know that I waited ONE YEAR to have Robin perform some (by his standards) pretty basic work!
I don’t know what wait time exists at present, but you might like to know that the various back and forth shipping fees, not to mention multiple customs and VAT charges that I incurred would be a headache you can avoid. It’s really a great big stress so I’m happy the winning bidder will just get the finished article without any of that nonsense!
I almost forgot – WHITE LED’s!
It is worth me mentioning that along with the ‘works’ fee to have the TB-303 fitted into the alu case, Robin charged me separately for fitting some special LEDs to this machine. With great care, I had tracked down some lovely diffused white LED’s. Most white LED’s are hyperbright and not diffused, these were, but were still a touch too bright and so Robin had to reengineer the TB-303 drive electronics to power them correctly. I feel this was really worth it though, the white on red looks absolutely stunning in pictures and more so in person.” Link
“This is a re listing because the previous buyer flacked out. This is a clean TB 303. No scratches, dings or anything like that. Check pictures.. ONLY SERIOUS BIDDERS PLEASE!!!

“For sale my Roland TB-303 Bass Line with Dtronics Midi Sync converter.
The unit is in very good condtion – some minor cosmetic wear around the volume control and battery bleed at the back (see photo). Comes with the original case (a bit tatty I’m afraid). No power supply (easy enough to pick up), no manual (downloadable?). Be assured this is a fabulous little unit, very organic and huge fun to play around with.
Bought new back in the early 80s with a Drumatix 606 (lost but not forgotten) and apparently discontinued in 1984 with less than 10,000 sold worldwide. Ideally could do with a service (a couple of the buttons are a little sticky but work fine) or, if you’ve got money, a Devilfish adapt or similar would make for an even more awesome bit of kit. Included in the sale is a Dtronics midi/sync converter (with power supply) to connect up the DIN socket at the back to an external midi device.
Reasonable starting price (look at others listed!) so happy bidding.” Link

Battery door is present, battery compartment is clean, and no leaking batteries in the unit.
All program functions appear to be working properly. I have a power supply and can provide a copy of the original owner’s manual in PDF format.” Link

“For sale is a Roland TB-303 Bass Line Synth. It is in good physical condition with minor markes and scratches. The battery compartment is in good shape and the cover still stays on. Unfortunately it does not work. I can’t get any sound out of it although when I plug it in some LEDs turn on. I bought it at a used pro audio / music shop closing sale as part of a bulk purchase. I don’t have any use for this so I’m selling it here as is, for parts or repair only with no returns since it is broken. It does not come with a power supply or manual.” Link

- integrierter Overdrive (“Muffler”)
- einspeisen von externen Audiosignalen in das Filter
- CV, Gate, Accent Out

“This TB-303 includes the carry case, original box and power supply.
It comes from a smoke free home studio & has been kept clean, it has blue LEDs on the octave buttons & red on the rest which looks cool in the dark & it’s in mint condition apart from the wearing around the cuttoff knob, other than that it’s really clean and new looking. All knobs turn smoothly with no tightness which is good for tweaking, it’s sad to see this go but i need the money to produce my own music which is slightly different,” Link

* The battery cover is on the Devilfish I just took it off to show the inside compartment

* The devilfish has a huge Acid sound, nothing compares!!!

” I am selling a Roland TB 303 I recently purchased of eBay. The CPU is healthy but the buttons need to be replaced. I bought this for 2200$ and am not willing to put the money into fixing it. I’ve had an email guesstimate for 250-450$ from an early 80′s Roland in-house tech. It turns on, has a sequence that has previously been programmed into it that will play but I can’t seem to program one. I am a newb at these things. I’d say this thing is in a great position to be purchased as a fixer-uper, but not at the price I paid for it. If you have any questions feel free to ask as I will be as forthcoming as possible about what I know with this classic piece of nostalgia. I have 2 manuals: English & Chinese, and the Roland power adapter for it.” Link
“A rare original unmodified Roland TB-303 Bass Line, Serial Number 220300. I bought this unit from a friend over 20 years ago at the same time as a Sequential Circuits Pro One but never got the hang of programming the Bass Line so never used it. The front panel and control knobs and switches are in very good condition with no wear around the main controls used to modulate the output. There are some very small dinks on two corners of the unit and a couple of superficial scratches on the rear but overall it is in good condition. It has been stored for all this time without batteries fitted so there is no leakage damage. The unit comes complete with the original carrying case, operation manual and procedure card. The carrying case is in excellent condition. The manual is complete and in good condition although there are some hand written notes on the cover. ” Link
“Original roland tb 303! The fattest dance bass synth sounds. No battery leaks. Includes original carrying case. This one has an incredible input filter modification. It sends the external 1/4 audio input into the envelope and filter section of the 303. It also has been fit with 1/8 inch CV, GATE, and FILTER inputs. It also has an additional knob that adjusts the decay in relationship with the accent. This is truly a unique 303 with that classic incredible sound” Link

”
This unit is vintage and rare. This 303 has NOT been modified, in its original state. It has the usual wear and tear minor scratches, and marks on the unit, nothing too bad. It has been in my possession for 16 years and has seen little use in the past 10 years. It is working, all buttons work, light up, sounds like it did in the 80′s. This item include has a custom protective plexiglas display case as seen in the picture.
It does not have the carrying case, original adapter, or the original manual. I have a copy of the manual or the PDF, which can be downloaded anywhere on the web.
A link to the manual can be found here:
http://www.artofcolor.com/tb303/
The battery cover on the back of the unit is missing. It does work with batteries you just have to modify the connection with a little aluminum foil because there is a gap where the battery and the metal connection meet.
Since this unit is vintage, it is sold as is. ” Link
“A genuine TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer with a built-in sequencer manufactured by the Roland. I’ve had this Synth since the early 1990′s but it’s time to replace my old synths with software versions. This one has a special place in my heart as i first heard this instrument in 1988 in a field and i was hooked on that unique sound. I had to have one but it took me a few years to get one as you couldn’t pick one up for love or money. I’m a reluctant seller but i just don’t use it anymore so……” Link

Info
Besonderheit: Voll Midifiziert IN/OUT !!! Interner sequencer nach wie vor voll funktionsfähig!!!

“For sale is a real ROLAND TB-303 BASSLINE who has been keep for years and recently restored by a friend of mine.
Things to mention about this bassline:
* The switch board has been removed and supplied by a new one. The old one is included in the packet as other parts of the original tb (b.e. the original battery cover).
* I also give you a DOEPFER MSY2 and one midi-sync cable original from Roland to synchronize it by midi.
* The battery has been replaced by a little battery that keeps the patterns but not gives autonomy to the tb, so you must used it with the original roland-boss transformer that goes with it.
* The synth pots have been rise up to make easier do acid and many of the integrated circuits has been soldered with sockets to the mother board to make easier change it if they fail.
* The light of the A# note dont work but is the only light that doesn´t work. so is easy when you hear growing and see no light…A# note ![]()
* The sync conector must be adjust manually to get the synchronize function, but when you catch the point it is slavered as you see on the video.
I must advice that this is and antique musical instrument. I can tell you that it works, the synthesizer section goes right and the sequencer till I know works, you can record patterns and songs but for example some patterns sound the same in some banks. ” Link

“Classic Bass synth, released in 1982 and originally intended to be used alongside the TR-606 Drumatix drum machine (check my other listings) as an electronic rhythm section for guitarists
Never really caught on in this usage and very few examples were actually sold (<10,000 worldwide) before it was discontinued in 1984.
It wasn't until after this and the subsequent explosion of the electronic music scene that these found a totally new audience on dancefloors the world over; the synthetic squelching and burping sounds the machine produced became known as the 'acid' sound, and the real-time tweakable dials made it a favourite for both DJs and live acts alike.
This has been used by so many artists in so many genres from acid house to techno, hardcore, breakcore, big beat, even pop records, the list goes on as they are still immensely popular with producers today.
1/4" jack output which is convenient also for using with effects pedals, a lot of people like to overdrive them in particular for a really dirty sound
This one has been modified by Kenton Electronics in the UK and has the additional slide/acc/filter/gate/CV jacks at the rear (not tested these but I assume they are good)
Bear in mind this machine does not have MIDI sockets (it predates MIDI) and has a DIN sync/CV sockets instead for synchronisation.
Item is unboxed but with original manual (tatty, missing rear cover) and official Boss PSA adaptor. Cosmetically the unit is in grade D condition, there is heavy wear to the finish all over the unit (as is pretty much the norm with 303s) and this has the usual wear around most of the dials where quite a lot of the silver finish has worn away. While testing I noticed a few of the buttons were a bit sticky and took a few presses to register (the low C and run/stop in particular, the others seemed ok) but they all work, again this is very common on 303s and 606s. Aside from this the machine is in excellent working order and sounds amazing." Link
“Condition: Excellent
I’m finally letting my piece of Dance Music History go! If you’ve found this item you know exactly what this is, it’s a hell of a lot more than the sum of it’s parts. This thing is an animal, which I’ve used on many many tracks…
Check out the drop at 2:27… this machine has served me well.
It’s never been gigged (are you insane?), has spent it’s entire life since I’ve had it inside my smokefree studio. Was serviced when I got it and sounds absolutely amazing. There are some slight wear marks around the Cutoff and Resonance knobs, and a tiny ding at the front of the unit, but that’s bound to happen on a 27(!!!) year old squelching masterpiece. (all shown in pics)
It comes with a VERY handy CV/GATE IN mod, which you can use to control the 303 from your sequencer if you have a MIDI>CV convertor…I use a Novation BassStation to do this, but a lot of the time I just use the onboard sequencer anyway.
I’ll throw in a DC power adaptor with this too.” Link

THIS UNIT WORKS LIKE BUTTER. IT DEFINITELY SCORES LOW ON THE COSMETIC SIDE, BUT I JUST HAD IT FULLY SERVICED AND ALSO HAD A CUSTOM MIDI IN/OUT PORT WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE FOLLOWING:
-START STOP SYNC
-MIDI IN CONTROL W/ACCENT AND SLIDE ABILITY
- MIDI OUT CONTROL TO RECORD WHATEVER SEQUENCES YOU WISH TO SAVE
THIS UNIT ALSO COMES WITH A PRO QUALITY PSA POWER SUPPLY.
THE COSMETIC ISSUES CAN BE SEEN IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS. THERE IS ONE SMALL CRACK ON THE BOTTOM OF THE UNIT, AND THE REST IS JUST FROM YEARS OF USE. THOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE ITS BEEN THROUGH HELL AND BACK AGAIN, IT HAS ACTUALLY NEVER LEFT MY HOME STUDIO. IT HAS JUST ENDURED HOURS OF KNOB TWIDDLING. I CAN ASSURE YOU THOUGH THIS 303 HAS A BEASTLY TONE AND SOUNDS BETTER THAN MOST BECAUSE OF THE INTERNAL CARE THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN. TIMES ARE TOUGH THOUGH AND MY BOSS HAS A 303 SO I DONT NEED MINE ANYMORE.” Link
“Fore sale is my very clean Roland TB 303 analog bass synthesizer. Comes with a copy of the owner’s manual and ac adapter plus the soft bag. Only used in my smoke-free pet-free home studio. I take very good care of my gear and it generally shows like in this case. This TB303 is in great condition works great and only has light cosmetic wear as pictured. No battery leakage either, it all works fine. NOTE that the battery cover is included. I removed to show the battery compartment in the pictures.” Link
“im selling my never gigged Roland TB-303 Bassline Acid Synth, with manual, power lead and batteries.” Link
“Owned since new. Home studio use only. Never gigged. Original box and manuals, etc. Most TB303′s came with a silver carry bag. This unit came w/ an original Roland black carry bag. The only modification is that CV and Gate inputs are added so that the unit can be played from another synthesizer that has external CV and Gate outs!” Link
“good working condition all knobs and buttons are original, battery cover is missing also don’t have ac input jack. There no cracks or chips in it.This is a great little machine ” Link
“Item is used but fully fonctional. Comes with manual and vinyl case. No power supply (works with batteries or universal power supply). Slightly damaged on left side but repaired by seller (see picture). Travel case is torn on rear left side.” Link
“I’ve owned this 303 for almost 20 years. It’s seen light studio use only. I recently took it to Advanced Musical Electronics in Los Angeles to make sure it was in top working order prior to selling. They have been in business for 27 years and specialize in vintage and rare gear. Only minor repairs were needed. They cleaned all the pots, made sure the soldering was good, cleaned the inside, made sure none of the bottons were sticking (a common problem in 303′s that makes programming a bit of a pain) Replaces a couple burned out LED’s. No major components were replaced. Only minor cosmetic scuffs and scratches, mostly on bottom. NO MODS!! Comes with power cord and original Manual and original silver case. ” :Link
“When we try to program a pattern it looks like it successfully records but we cant get it to play back! Maybe we dont know how to work it maybe it is an easy fix
