“This is a used SP1200. I don’t know much about this unit. It appears to be one of the first models from what I can tell. I plugged it in and it powers up. All the light lit up for a moment and it read insert diskette on the display. All the buttons seem to function except for the one on channel 5 which is missing the button cover. There is cosmetic wear (peeling varnish, scratches) I don’t have any diskettes for it, so I could not test it any further. I originally didn’t want to sell this, but after I sold my limited MPC3000 and blue screen ASR10, I have to remember that gear is just gear.
(at least I’m telling myself that so I don’t break down. ha)
I used this primarily as a drum module that I would control via Ableton and a midi patchbay.
The third pad is really temperamental and works just fine sometimes, other times doesn’t. I think it’s just the spring that needs to be fixed because sometimes it doesn’t pop back up.
I’ve attached a couple pictures and the 3rd one shows the back panel that isn’t completely attached on the right. it’s like a quarter inch off set because of a dent.
I’m including 4 beatboxpros.com disks. One is the start up disk, then there is a drum set kit on 2 disks. The last disk is an AMAZING 808 sample set, directly sampled from the 808.
With the pitch control of each sample, you can really detune an 808 kick that is massive.
I would recommend getting it looked at, because the input ring is a little loose and I think as a result the level of the IN is really gain-y. The sample volume is really low with some gain. For my purposes it worked just fine though. sequencing drums on a 12-bit machine was the best thing I could’ve done for some of my mixes. ” Link

“It’s time to let this go to a working writer producer which i am sadly not much anymore This is my own original sp-1200 that i bought new back in the day. It has been used on many well known hip-hop albums of the 80′s both in NY and San Francisco. It looks great all things considered–comes in the super cool Halliburton aluminum suitcase that i always took it to studios in. One latch is missing the cover it holds fine. Included is of course the power cord, as well as a directional DVD from the Sample Kings. In additon are about a dozen original sound disks that came with the sp1200 AND about 70 of my old disks which are filled with all my loops and sounds from the era. Probably lots of 808 and 909 samples, lots of james brown loops and other stuff that we wetre all using back in the early days of hip hop. You can of course reuse these disks but i suggest you go through them first if only for a fun trip down memory lane. “Works great, has 8 brand new slider knobs and a few of the white push buttons have been replaced. Could use a cleaning probably since its been sitting awhile in my old studio, Screen is bright green with no dead pixels. All the black pads have been cleaned and springs adjusted. Each pad works fine and uploads sounds to each, a couple of the white buttons stick sometimes but still work. Comes with a VHS and DVD tutorial video to teach u how to make beats with it. And power cord and I’ll give ya about 60 brand new floppies to save your stuff. Just made a beat on it last week have to sell due to baby coming. As per the unit its self. It’s been sitting. As such, 2-3 of the pads stick as well as some of the selection buttons. A good cleaning and plenty of “uses” should clear that up! Second, at times/intermittently when it’s in “seg” mode it will trigger samples. Not sure why it started doing that. It was working perfect the last time I used it! The disk drive is fine, all inputs, outputs and midi in, out and thru are great!

The machine is in fully working condition. It looks fine! It got small scratches but nothing major. Everything works perfectly fine, except pad 1 that needs a little service. The pad works, but has kind of bad contact. I suggest that you use external midi pads for best performance. Since the SP pads is not really pads, more like buttons. All the other 7 pads works perfectly though.
Comes with 3 original SP floppy discs loaded with samples, and 24 DD floppy discs for you to use. And a user manual, not an original though. And of course the power cord.” Link

The “record in” is slightly temperamental, and every now and then it’ll take a 2nd attempt to record in a sample. This was never much of a problem.
The sliders could use a little cleaning. the first 2 or 3 faders need a little finessing to get them to be exact (when editing / truncating the sample lengths)

A fair amount of restoration work has been recently done on this unit. Most notably, a new Noritake VFD display replaced the faded old LCD display.
The Record In and Master Out knobs were bypassed. (The idea behind this is to preserve the unique sonics of the unit as much as possible and to increase reliability over time. The unit now always inputs and outputs at maximum level. I/O Levels can still, of course, be controlled at your mixer.)
A few of the drum pad bottoms (the spring-loaded portion of the drum pad) were very worn, and were replaced with NOS parts.
A worn slider was replaced with a NOS original part. One of the original SSM2044 analog filter chips had gone bad, so it was replaced with a NOS one as well. Finally, the worn E-Mu knob that controlled Metronome Volume was replaced with a much higher-quality UREI knob, with set screws. (The original knobs were much cheaper and did not have set screws.)
The unit has been tested thoroughly, and every problem that was found, was fixed. However, this machine is over 20 years old, so it is sold “As-Is” and only guaranteed against DOA.

The floppy drive kept having problems(most SP1200 floppy drives eventually die out). This one has a completely rebuilt floppy in it, most of the ones on ebay have the original floppy in it which will eventually die out or break completely. The floppy has been tested and is fully functional. It also has a brand new backlight in it. All other functions were tested, led lights and sliders, drum pads and everything works. I will include the OS disk for it. It also comes with a heavy duty anvil case specially made for it, but it needs to be repadded as the padding is starting to flake off,” Link
