“Up for auction is a Moog Source Synthesizer I am selling for a friend, as it has been sitting in storage for the last couple years. I have had a few days of playing around/testing it, and it sounds really amazing. Everything I tested worked great, including testing of all of the buttons and keys, and some secondary functions that can be found in the manual online (I tested out the arpeggiator, sequencer (and program sequencer which records sound changes as well!), patch writing, Sample and Hold, and Auto Trig). I also put on some new rubber feet on it, as you can see in one of the pictures. This keyboard has had some small modifications done to it in the past, including a small switch by the pitch wheel that cuts off all sound except for the white noise generator (the switch itself is a little loose, but it does its function as it should), and several extra 1/4 inch outputs/inputs on the back (I’m not sure what they are supposed to do, except for one labeled as VCF). This keyboard has been played a lot as evidenced by scratches and marks throughout it, but keys are responsive and the keyboard sounds great. Sold as is without refunds, as I do not have the equipment to test input/output connections in the back besides the standard output connection which works fine. ” Link

“Moog Source Synthesizer. About a 9.8 out of 10. Near “Museum Quality”

This has been in my home and barely used for about 17 years. I am the second owner. It works perfectly. She has no technical issues! The keys are springy and responsive. This synth was taken out maybe once or twice a year for bass lines, then put away in my non smoking studio. The touchpad works 100% and is original. It has the ORIGINAL manual and schematics. It is literally 99% scratch free, and even the wood panels look near mint. The underneath of the keyboard looks minty.

There is a tiny ding that I am pointing at in the last picture. It is about an 1/8″ deep and is simply cosmetic. You could touch it up with a tiny spec of wood putty and it would be like new. There is a tiny tiny barely noticeable scratch on the aluminum panel to the right side of the weighted optical wheel that is very hard to notice..only at certain angles it can be seen. Those are the only two imperfections that I have noticed.” Link

A little background explanation is needed on this one. It worked well but always ran pretty hot and one day it began suffering from the “Crazy Source” problem. For more details on this issue search Google. I can handle pure analogs well having brought Arp Odysseys and the like back from the dead, but the Source has so many digital elements for patch storage and control that I decided to send it to an expert. The power supply was rebuilt but the tech reported that heat was still an issue. Then suddenly for presumably personal reasons it was reported to me that the tech was no longer able to accept or continue repairs, and the Source was shipped back. I don’t know if it was a medical problem, he was struck by lightning, or joined a cult. Really no idea why the repair wasn’t completed. I was told he believed he traced the issue to an LM723CN Voltage Regulator IC. The original had been pulled from the board and for that reason, I have not plugged it in since receiving it back several months ago. They cost less than $1.00 and I intended to replace it, but between grad school, a new job, and a toddler the Source has done nothing but sit, and if I keep it, I expect that will continue to be the case.

So long story short, it might be a simple fix, but I have no way to know that to be the case. The problems may go deeper. Caveat Emptor. Let the buyer beware. At the very least it’s probably got a ton of useful parts left in it, and that’s officially how I am selling it. If you can get it working, that’s wonderful. I’m not going to describe how awesome it sounded when it was working because if you don’t know that already, you probably don’t know how to fix one either. If it wasn’t clear already, this Moog Source is sold AS IS.” Link

“For sale is a Moog Source monophonic synthesizer, c.1981 or so. Serial number is #3966. This synth also has an after-market MIDI retrofit installed, so it is perfect to integrate into a DAW sequencer, to add fat analog sounds to the digital palate. I have a pdf file for the original user’s manual, and a hard copy of the user manual for the MIDI retrofit.

This synthesizer works in every way, WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTION: I cannot seem to disable the routing of the mod wheel to the oscillator pitch. There are two buttons on the panel to route modulation to the osc. and/or to the filter cutoff. The cutoff switches work fine; the osc. switches do not. Could be a dirty contact under the panel. It was never an issue for me, because I always routed the mod wheel to pitch all the time. Please understand this limitation before bidding.

Sonically, the Source is in excellent shape with a clean, full signal. This synth is not quite as fat and rich as the original MiniMoog D, but it’s fairly close and has the ability to store 16 banks X 16 patches/bank. Programming is achieved by selecting a parameter and then spinning a large knob to achieve values 1-100.

All mechanical functions work perfectly, except for as described above” Link

“MOOG SOURCE ANALOG SYNTHESIZER VINTAGE 1980′S #3917

Serial # 3917

Condition: There are a couple surface blemishes that are shown on the membrane in the photos. These are strictly cosmetic with no actual damage to the membrane.
There is also the usual wear from use to the steel casing, no damage but usual wear from age and use.
As far as the technical/mechanical condition of the unit, everything seems to function correctly except for one thing.
There is a faint backing tone or sound lightly in the background of everything that is played, this comes and goes, almost like some note is sustaining.” Link

“This auction is for a monophonic Moog Source vintage synthesizer. All functions are currently in good working order. There are a few light scuffs to the steel portions of the body, which should be expected with an instrument of this age. Additionally, once the synth is plugged in it is in the “ON” mode. The on/off switch is not functioning, but that has not inhibited any of they synth’s fantastic capabilities. It is simply ready to go at all times! This is an extremely rare vintage instrument and is sold “as is”.” Link

“VIntage MOOG SOURCE with Custom Wood Case & CV/GATE input mod.
***VERY SPECIAL***
I recently took this synth to be overhauled and calibrated as it was discovered in a closet and had been there for years.
I took it to EARS in NYC and well it cost a fortune to get everything back up to spec, but they also discovered a very special and very valuable and very professionally done mod. This SOURCE has been modified to take standard CV & GATE input, not the proprietary MOOG controls. I was very excited, and rushed home, and plugged it into my ROLAND analog sequencer, and wa-la I was hearing the same pattern on the source… TRULY AMAZING. This synth is calibrated and all bad caps were replaced. I love this synth, and the sound is amazing and can be very quirky, and is very versitile, but due to the amount I have spent on repairs for this synth, I cannot afford to keep it, so my loss your gain. I will happily ship it worldwide to ebay members with good feedback. I will ship it via fedex or UPS within the USA, and your choice for international shipping. Please ask questions before bidding & GOOD LUCK!! It sounds amazing and clean, and very warm, and very very fat. It is nicely in tune, and the keyboard action is great” Link

“Vintage Moog Source analog synthesizer with wood and metal construction. Synth features 3 octaves, 2 oscillators, and an arpeggio function.

These beauties were made between 1981 – 1985 and are becoming hard to find!

Condition: AS IS CONDITION with no guarantees of functionality and no returns

When I bought this a few years ago, it worked perfectly and I enjoyed the warm, fat analog tones, pitch and mod controls, and incremental wheel that worked with the oscillators and noise controls.

The bad news is the Moog was kept in a garage for a few weeks during a move and hasn’t worked properly since (hence the low starting price). The sound is extremely quiet (as in almost non-existant if you get anything at all) and the incremental wheel will increase in number, but not decrease. From what I can tell, the various programs are not functional anymore. It could be an easy fix for someone with technical knowledge, but I really have no idea how difficult or expense it would be to repair. This could be your chance to get a classic, easy to use synth at a good price.

There are some cosmetic flaws such as scratches and a chipped key. ” Link

“this is…
I have two of these, so letting one go to make room. It is a vastly underrated synth, for its sonic character, quite versatile.

I am very particular about synth condition, so everyone I buy, I end up cleaning and restoring as best as possible.
If you have similar tendencies, this Source will save you much time and expense.

It is 100% functional and fully re-calibrated. It is also cosmetically restored. However, the metal portions have
been cleaned, but many file scratches are clearly visible, as well as a few deeper ones. Please see the photos, I tried to show the areas that
scratches are evident. On the other hand, the wood side cheeks and case are new and blemish free (beautiful too).
The list of primary restored items:
1. Most metal hardware replaced with new.
2. All Wood replaced with new.
3. Power supply rebuilt, caps, voltage regulator.
4. All electrolytic capacitors replaced throughout synth.
5. New battery ($30 item, but should last 25 years)
6. Thoroughly cleaned inside and out, including key contacts.
7. Fully calibrated and tuned.” Link

“This Moog Source is used and in great working order. It was sold about a month ago, but returned due to some problems with shipping. Upon return it was looked over by our techs. Its pots were cleaned and a damaged plastic piece that was holding the board in place was replaced. It has been tested out (minus the cassette interface) and given a clean bill of health. Despite the cosmetic damage, it still looks and sounds great. It has a dent on the face. It is nothing that affects button operation. It also has a dented input jack that was probably sustained while a cable was plugged in. The jack works perfectly. Other than that, it just has a few missing screws on the back plate bottom. The case is still solid and not about to fall apart. It is one sturdy synth! Please refer to the photos for details.” Link

“Up for bid is a Moog Source in great condition. I am only the second owner and I have used it exclusively as a studio instrument, no live gigging. It was purchased from the original owner about 4 years ago. As you can see from the pictures there are only light scratches on the stainless steel which are expected with this material for the age of the synth.

After purchase I had the Encore Midi kit professionally installed and the inside looked over & cleaned up, battery replaced, etc. Everything works great, the membrane switches are in perfect shape with no delay after pressing. The encore midi kit not only adds the midi in, out, and thru but also adds extra patches taking you from 1 bank of 16 to 16 banks of 16 or 256 patch locations. It also allows the appregiator function to be clocked from external midi clock and adds the ability for the Source to act as a midi to CV convertor using the CV and S-Trigger outs on the back.

Also included with the synth are the original manual, some patch sheets with sound settings, the encore midi kit manual and a case. The case is original too and the foam inside is showing its age and breaking down. I will place the synth in a thick plastic bag (that my poly evolver shipped in) so none of it gets on the synth. ” Link

It’s in pretty great condition considering its age. It’s just a bit scratched up on the metal parts and wooden sides. I haven’t been able to figure out the arpeggiator, so I can’t be sure if it’s working, but I know everything else works perfectly. ” Link

“Very clean MOOG SOURCE analog synthesizer. Serial #: 236x. Made in Buffalo, NY, USA.

This Source is in great condition and functions 100%. Membrane switches are very positive and reliable. Colors on the membrane and graphics are unfaded and crisp. The keys are even with no cracks or scratches. Brushed aluminum surfaces have some light scratches…mostly it’s the lacquer coating on the aluminum that scratches off easily leaving light discolorations here and there. The wooden side panels and wooden keybed trim are in beautiful shape.

I love the Source as a performance instrument…it’s like having a Minimoog with patch memory but is lighter and generally more stable. This is especially true if you only need to tweak one or two parameters (24db Moog filter!) in real time, although you quickly learn to program and tweak on the fly with the endless rotary knob which is easy/fast to use with practice. It is especially wonderful (and famous) as a bass synth but it can provide delicate, musical timbres for pads/leads as well as warm raw phatness. A nice use of the patch memory involves saving subtle evolving changes or pitch (key) changes that can be strung together live to form song sections. ” Link

moogsource “This is my Moog Source, which I bought new in 1984 at Goodman Music in North Hollywood. I used it with a Moog Taurus II controller bass pedalboard (awesome set-up), so you could play key bass on the Source or on the bass pedals with your feet which I am an expert at ☺ (B-3 player). This cosmetically is in good condition for it’s age, with a nice straight keyboard but the unit overall is not mint. There’s some oxidation & scratches on aluminum parts and the wood is o.k. to good with no chips, although there are scratches on the wood but nothing major. The membrane (or switch edit panel) is in very good condition because I only programmed the 16 bass sounds and left it, with only minor modification now & then.

This works great but there’s an idiosyncrasy that I want to mention, but they can be quite common if you’re a vintage Moog user. When you first turn it on, before it’s warmed up, it sometimes it goes into a strange edit mode(occasionally it doesn’t do it at all). If you wait 5 or 10 minutes while it warms up and turn it off, then turn it on again, it’s ready to play with all operation as normal. it’s done that for about 15 years. Anyway it will take 5 or 10 minutes for the tuning to stabilize, which is common with all vintage Moogs and other old synths as well. Of course there is a tuning knob on the back of unit to tune it to your other instruments or A440 concert pitch. I imagine all the other functions work on this such as the sequencer, sample and hold, etc but I never used it in that capacity, mainly for bass sounds which are the most awesome fat bass sounds on the planet. This does come with 16 of my programmed bass sounds so enjoy!

This comes with original owner’s manual and a full set of schematics and technical service information (very important). Also comes with power cord & nice Warwick Rockbag (soft case –see photo), which has some padding and can get you by if you’re careful. I’m just throwing it in because it seems to fit OK. I’ve always moved it in a anvil case which I got rid of years ago. I will miss this dearly, but I have a rack mount Novation Super Bass Station to power the Taurus pedals.

This will be double boxed and well padded for shipping, but please keep in mind that shipping vintage electronics has its risks in extreme cold temperatures, like the snow they’ve been having across the country. If you’re local in California, pick-up is available.” Link

moogsource “Nice original Moog Source. Basically this is a programable Mini-Moog. Incredible, REPEATABLE bass sounds.I had a checkup done a few years back and replaced a few circuits that were questionable including a new Incremental control. I opened up the unit today and reseated all of the IC’s and it tunes great now! Everything seems to be in order. There is a faint high pitched noise when plugged in to a guitar amp but that’s a much higher gain than a line input. I played it all morning and all the keys work great and the touch panel works properly.Super flat keybed! Hate to sell this but I’m just not using it anymore…” Link

MoogSource-SwitchPanel-Small “Our 2nd run by popular demand. Don’t wait another 3 years, limited to 100.

If your switches do not activate, this easily remedies your problem of ‘dead’ switches.

You’d be inactive too if you were poked by someones finger for 30 years!

This auction is for 1 Set as shown.” Link

moogsourceuk “I have found that when I state clearly in my descriptions that items are scratched and battered, oddly they reach really good prices. I’m guessing this is because I demonstrate honesty by doing this. I can’t do that with this auction, because there are hardly any scratches on this pristine and beautiful Moog Source. The woodwork is brilliant, the metal facia is wonderful and the keyboard looks great. The membrane is all working 100% and there are no poor contacts so I’ve done my best, I’ve tried to describe this as honestly as I can.

The Moog Source hardly ever comes up on ebay so this is a RARE opportunity to buy one. Make the most of it because I only really see 2 or 3 of these in a year if you are lucky.

Everything functions perfectly and the tuning is good. Some of the bouncy bass sounds you can generate with this synth are fabulous. I sat some months back playing the bass line to the 80s hit ‘A.E.A.E.I.O.U’ by Freeze and just laughed because it was so convincing. It kind of shows how sad I am that I was able to entertain myself by sitting with a Moog source playing this riff for ages and laughing at how good it was but it really was good.

The oscillators can be detuned to create rich thick textures and of course this synth is pretty famous not only for its fat bouncy bass sounds but also its epic lead synth sounds.

The value control, a spinning wheel, works nicely and spins smoothly and the increment changes are accurate when spinning the wheel.

This is the version with 16 memories and does not have a midi kit built in though it is easily possible to have this fitted with a midi kit for little more than £135.” Link

moog_source “The Moog source is a really great synth with a major problem: The membrane panel often malfunctions and makes it unusable,It’s my experience that attempted repairs only last for a short time if at all – just long enough to sell it on ebay perhaps!.Replacements are almost impossible to find.It took me 2 years to find one !

This source has a brand new membrane panel which works perfectly and should continue to do so for the lifetime of the synth. All the other blue bits are new too!

This source is fully serviced and calibrated. It is in good condition for its age, it is not mint so if you prefer to put your synths in glass cases this may not be for you , if however you want to play -read on.,There are some marks to the lacquering on the metal as you can see in the photos. Every Moog source I have seen has this. The metal can be easily refinished .

Everything works perfectly and it really does sound great by any standards. its the most Moog-like Moog after the MiniMoog but with the big big plus of memories.Battery is fine. Like many analogue synths particularly Moogs it takes around 5 minutes warm up time for the tuning to stabilise from cold. After that its fine and stable
I find the membrane panel surprisingly good to use for real time control.Comes with photocopy of owners manual.” Link
