“A rare opportunity to get your hands on an original 1970′s Moog Synthesizer! Completely analogue!

The Moog Sonic 6 stopped production in 1979, I believe. It comes built in to its own hard case and has a built in speaker too, so it is very easy to transport to gigs, rehersals, etc despite the weight from the analog internal circuitry.

Bought in 1980 from ‘The Synthesizer Store’ (Chase) in Manchester, this Moog Sonic 6 (synth in a suitcase!) has all the original knobs, sliders caps, etc (one slider cap has fallen in half but just needs a little glue).

This synth is in full working order. However it could do with a little TLC as some of the sliders and knobs make a crackling noise which I’m sure will go away with a good internal clean.

There are little signs of wear apart from invisible, internal dust and a few minor scuffs on the casing (plus the above mentioned slit to one slider cap). However the case is covered with stickers from the 80′s (as seen in photo in mirror), which I assume can easily be removed to leave it newish looking. There is no instruction manual but its operation is straightforward (fairly intuitive).” Link

“Up for auction is a classic Moog Sonic Six Synthesizer. This has been in my collection a LONG time. Synth turns on and plays music.

I’ve found the following issues:

1) rightmost key sticks. Seems like it’s sticking against the side of the case and needs to be realigned
2) Several of the sliders create static when used. I couldn’t really recreate it in the video below, but the Master volume is the worst
3) Several of the potentiometers also create static when turned.” Link

“The item was inherited. It was professionally refurbished and is for sale in perfect (used) condition. Refurbishing means clean all knobs and polish the electric circuitry.
It was already working well when I got it. It is about 40 years old.
I tested it and it works perfect. I am an electronic musician. because of this the brother gave all the inherited stuff to me to be sold.
It has 115 V or 220 V switch
Speaker works and external in also.
Levers Master, Glissando – besides the keys- and Master Oscillators are lost but the sliders below still work

What does refurbishing mean ?
I can not check every signal path for problems myself. I have given it to the best music-o-electrician in town to check that there is no potential cable breach or short cuircuit
or an unofficial patch cable. The Item was not punished with contact spray or similar. This was pure manu-facturing.

So the sound of it? It IS a moog and it can make weired sounds.
It has a very special signal processing design that could only come from Mr Moog himself. Yes, you can hear that.” Link

“The Sonic 6 is a special synthesizer. Built into its own case, it is duophonic, has two LFOs, an external input that runs through the filter and ring modulator, and a built-in speaker. The LFOs can be mixed and can receive voltage from the envelope–producing some unique modulation effects.

This Sonic 6 is in excellent condition, save for a couple minor flaws. The Moog label is peeling up on the outside of the case and the synth is missing four slider caps. Additionally, the shaft for one slider is sheared off; the slider is still easy to operate with your finger tip. The synth received a recent service at Switched On Music Electronics, including new keyboard bushings and rebuilding of the internal amplifier. It works 100% and sounds fantastic.” Link

“Tim Davis was killed in a motorcycle accident last month. Tim was a gifted musician and an electronics genius. This synth was a lifelong project and hobby of his. It was purchased the year he graduated high school (1972) and has been with him ever since. I included two pics of an original Moog Sonic Six for comparison.

As you can see the main panel has been removed and replaced with clear plexiglass. In the upper portion: fourteen 1/4″ I/O jacks have been added on the left side, eleven 1/8″ I/O jacks have been added along the top, 32 various switches, buttons and I/O jacks have been added along the bottom. The original speaker was removed and replaced with a panel of 29 dials and a button. In the lower portion 13 various switches, dials and ports have been added and a replacement speaker (marked ELP) has been mounted. There is a hand written label that says ‘TYMCLAVIER’, I believe this is a reference to the Synclavier Digital Synthesizer. I have a notebook containing hand written instructions on the use of this creation as well as hand drawn diagrams of many of the circuits involved.

I can not explain the modifications that have been made because I am neither a musician nor an electrician. I can say that I have powered up the Moog and it works. It needs to be refurbished as the keys are not all making good contact when pressed, some are scratchy & some are faint.

This is NOT a stage ready instrument! This is a project for the person who understands the science behind analog synthesizers and enjoys exploring the unknown. This was clearly a labor of love from a man who signed his name Tim “Moog Man” Davis. I hope that this instrument can find its way into the hands of someone who will appreciate the technical genius that created it and enjoy the creative path it leads them down.” Link

“This auction is for a Moog Sonic Six
classic suitcase style Analog synthesizer in good condition
as used by the Great man himself Bob Moog for school tuition
also has internal speaker for quiet home practice?
this unit has been service and calibrated by Robin “devilfish “Whittle “a few months ago and used only once since at an Art gallery opening
to great acclaim as its looks as well as its sound are stunning and iconic,
I recently powered it up and check if all functions are working and every thing is fine
stay in perfect tune
comes with service manual . users manual and original brochure
this particular unit was modified to accept a gate input via the volume control
(gate in is normally is accessed by the clinch type plug )

a classic Moog sound with diode ladder filter can be used like a mini moog but with much more
the extensive ,almost modular routing possibilities are not for the faint of heart and require some knowledge of analog synthesis
modulation sources include , 2 voltage controlled LFO’s , envelope modulation , ring modulator
and the Sonic six can create some wonderful drones and sound effects patches
to suit today’s modern music styles” Link

“Up for auction is a Moog Sonic Six suitcase analog synthesizer in great shape. Every knob and key has been tested and works well; overall this is in amazing condition for it’s age. The output jacks and power cables are in good working order. The outer case is in nice shape with only a few minor scratches. It even comes with the original manuals.

This is a dual-oscillator fully analog synthesizer that is lighter and more portable than most Moog synths due to it’s suitcase design. The large control section with mod clean blue rounded rectangles of signal flow with large knobs and sliders is a delight to play and tweak like a synth was meant to; and the built-in speaker makes this a complete music production station more than almost any other portable synth of the time. Tones produced by this little gem range from smooth and mellow to punchy bass and screaming banshee leads even before the unique dual-LFO’s and ring modulator are thrown into the mix. Used by bands as diverse as Stereolab, Frank Zappa, Yes, Keith Emerson, and Chromeo.

In the interest of full disclosure, here’s a rundown of anything that makes this less than an immaculate museum-quality piece.
1) There is a marking above the “source mixer” section of the control panel that says “PSU Music Dept” that is lightly etched into the black part, barely visible in the photographs. It would not be at all visible on a stage or from a distance of a few feet but can be clearly seen up close. 2) As shown in the picture of the keyboard, the keys are all in great shape and play well, but have slight variances in height typical of any handmade analog synth of this era. 3) A few of the pots can intermittently produce some scratching, again typical of synths from the 60′s and 70′s. A pro cleaning of this board should bring it to 100%, and is recommended for any analog board every few years.” Link

“Up for bidding is my Moog Sonic-Six. It is in Excellent Condition considering that it’s nearly 40 years old. There are a few minor issues with it that are listed below, but it is fully functional, and everything works as it should. These were designed to be simple, straight-forward, and easy to use. They were also one of the first Duophonic synths, which were rare in the early 70′s. The great Bob Moog himself used a Sonic-Six during his early instructional tours. I certainly learned alot about basic Analog synthesis with this machine. Besides its basic functions, it has other features that make it truly unique. It has twin, sweepable LFO’s with 4 different waveforms with many different control options, and the Filtering is amazing. The Noise Generator is old fashioned Analog, and is a blast to use with the twin LFO’s. This thing is true analog in all its glory and will most definitely scare the crap out of your neighbors!” Link

“HELLO AND THANKS FOR THE INTEREST IN THE MOOG SONIC 6

THIS SYNTHESIZER IS VERY COOL AND MADE IN 1973, THE CONDITION OF THIS KEYBOARD IS VERY NICE AND HAS BEEN ALOT OF FUN WITH PUTTING ELECTRIC GUITAR THROUGH IT LIKE A FULL GUITAR EFECT. OR USEING AS A KEYBOARD,,

THE DIA. IS H 7″ X L 34″ X W 13″ AND IS IN A COOL HARD SHELL CASE WHICH PROTECTS YOUR INVESTMENT AND MAKES IT VERY EASY TO TRAVEL WITH AND BEING ABLE TO STORE IT.

IT HAS SMALL AMOUNTS OF SURFACE RUST ON HANDLE MOUNTS AND BUCKELS HOWEVER IS ALL FUNTIONAL IN EVERYWAY,,

SOME OF THE SLIDE KNOBS ARE CRACKED,BUT ALL SLIDE CONTROLS WORK,, AS WELL AS KNOB CONTROLS,,

THIS IS A 4 OCTIVE KEYBOARD AND HAS A PITCH BAR FOR WAMMY BAR ACTION,,

IT CAN BE 115v or 230v WHICH MAKES IT GREAT IF TRAVELING IN DIFFERANT COUNTRYS OR VOLTAGE NEEDED.

THIS SYNTHESIZER IS SORT OF HEAVY SO SHIPPING THIS COULD BE EXPENSIVE DEPENDING ON YOUR COUNTRY OR PLACE YOUR AT.” Link

” This is a really cool and rare synth but *It Does Need Some Help!*
All of the cosmetic issues can be seen in the pictures, ie. missing slider knobs, cigarette burns on the keys, scratches, etc. It powers on just fine and there is signal out of the phones/monitor outputs but the built in speakers only ‘hum’ when on. With it plugged into a monitor or headphones there is an overall fuzz/noise going on. I am not a keys/synth guy really, so I cannot tell you for certain that all functions work but I can tell you that the sound changes with all of them. If you are not a repair tech yourself, please keep in mind that you will most likely want to take this to one! THIS IS SOLD AS IS – NO EXCEPTIONS! ” Link

“The moog Sonic 6 is a rare synthesiser and sounds not like any other Moog ,often called the suitcase synth.Made between1974-79, and made originally for home/educational use, Bob Moog i understand travelled acrossthe States demonstrating the Sonic 6.This moog was bought about 4 yrs ago from Kevin Lightner and imported from the USA, i think the person who i bought it from speaks for itself. All working and like a Minimoog works at best been powered on for 20 mins or so.To go into details what the synth can do would take some time, so if you go on the web you will find many sites covering this synth, vintagesynth may be a 1st port of call, the best way to describe the sounds it produces is perhaps sci fi and Dr Who type ,the introduction to the Colin Baker theme era is one of the best sounds ive heard all analogue of course. The power supply has been upgraded and the synth runs on US voltage, a new step down transformer will be included,if sold i would advise you obtain a copy user manual for best results. The volume slider has been replaced by a new one and new slider caps used on the mighty Arp 2600 have been put on, the panel is near perfect ,as they were in a suitcase its no suprise they stay in good condition just like my Arp 2600.A unique and very scarce moog synthesiser and with using effects ect i dread to think the sounds possible. The case has some wear and scratch scuffs at the top. As i understand it on purchase the sonic six former owner was the Moog Cookbook. The moog is currently at Synthrestore Bedford and is collection only, sorry i will not post or courier and shipping overseas is not possible.. Just to add there is a scuff mark on the top c key otherwise not bad for a 30yr+ Synthesiser.” Link

“Up for sale is my Moog Sonic Six.

I am the third owner of this Sonic Six since it’s production. This is one of the best synthesizers to learn the fundimentals of Analog Synthesizers since it is completely self contained, and was the first (or one of the first) duophonic synthesizers available. Amplifier, speakers, keyboard and a complete pre-patched synth all in one portable case

I powered up the unit, and it still works in all of it’s duophonic glory! There is a little static when some of the sliders are moved (I assume a few of the potentiometers need cleaning), and the right most key is working, but tends to get stuck in the down position if pushed to hard – easy for the new owner to fix.” Link

“This is my very rare 1974 suitcase Moog for sale. Hardly ever comes up on eBay. Probably the best looking synth ever made! Its just been serviced so its in perfect working order. Cosmetically the outside case is a little scratched but its in great condition on the inside. Very clean. All keys, pots and sliders are in tact and everything works. 3 of the sliders are missing and has been replaced with different ones, little LinnDrum rubber heads (master, glissando). The sound is very unique and can be routed different ways (LFO, Ring modulator etc) which makes it very flexible and different from the rest of the Moogs. It doesn’t sound like a mini Moog, more like an Arp Odessy or an Ems to me… Great for spacy fx’s and great for traditional keys playing.
It comes with a built-in speaker(!!!!!) and a 4-octave, 49-note (C-C) keyboard. Each VCO can output sawtooth, triangle, and rectangle (pulse/square) waveforms as well as 2 “waveform generators.” A “quality” knob adjusts the width of the rectangular waveform. White or pink noise is also available. The Sonic Six can be set for 3 keyboard modes; high note priority, low note priority, or duophonic. It can also be set to an alternate tuning across the keyboard (different interval between octaves of the keyboard). Portamento rate is controlled by a knob. The envelope section features a basic envelope, with variable control for attack and decay and a switchable release (follows decay) and sustain. It had a single VCF, low-pass voltage controlled filter. Two multimode LFOs are available. Their speed is independently variable and can be controlled by the envelope.” Link

“A nice clean example of a Moog Sonic Six. This one was built in 1974 and has literally spent its entire life in Williamsville, NY; it’s birthplace. This unit will require some work to get it running properly. It does power up but there is no output. I think I have traced this problem to a couple of bad IC’s on the B board. As I do not have experience repairing these devices, I will leave this for the new owner. The whole service manual is available for free online. Once repaired this synth will be a very useful instrument. ” Link

sonic6 “A rare opportunity to purchase a true analogue monster!

Very rare, how many do you think are in Australia?
The sonic six is a real beast, it’s the most temperamental, beautiful, noisy, harsh, frustrating, rewarding and fun synth I have owned and I have owned many, from Junos to MS20′s and the mighty Roland System 100, the Sonic Six is in a league of it’s own!

To this day still it has modulation capabilities that no other synth, other than a large modular system, can do.

As with any synth approaching it’s 40th birthday (build date of April 1974 on this one) there are some issues.
The X/Y pitch control input knob on the far right hand bottom side is a bit loose and could be replaced however it still functions as it should no problem.
Oscillator A is not sounding however the waveforms and octaves still affect Oscillator B when cross modulating, the manual states that a either a capacitor or a couple of resistors need to be replaced if this occurs, it clearly states which parts are needed to fix this known problem.
It is missing a few slider caps as you can see.
All keys function as they should with no double triggers, the internal speaker works great and is very LOUD!
PRINTED SERVICE MANUAL AND SCHEMATICS WILL BE PROVIDED.” Link

sonic6 “I´m selling my Moog Sonic Six. The Synthesizer is in good used conditions. Its fully working and the the knobs and faders sound pretty clean. Three fader caps are missing.

You will find lots of information on youtube and other web-sides about this fine machine. The Sonic Six has a really great sound and do to its clever modulation matrix lots of possibilities. The auction includes a copied operating and service manual.

The Moog Sonic 6 (also Sonic VI and Sonic Six) is a duophonic analog synthesizer that was manufactured by Moog Music from 1974 to 1979. The Sonic 6 is the result of Moog Music’s acquisition of the company Musonics, which had previously made a synthesizer called the Sonic V. The Sonic 6 is mounted in its own briefcase; the upper control panel folds and latches over the keyboard to ease transportation and storage. This feature was used by a number of synthesizer manufacturers of the time, however the Sonic 6 was Moog Music’s only product that incorporated this into its design. The Sonic 6 is also the only Moog synthesizer that featured built-in speakers rather than requiring the user to use an external amplifier. The Sonic 6 features two VCOs with changeable waveform (sawtooth, triangle, square, pulse), one low-pass VCF, a VCA, two multimode LFOs for modulation and a 49-note keyboard.

The Sonic Six was based on Waytena’s Musonics Sonic V. When Musonics bought Moog, they sold the Sonic V as a Moog for a period, and then redesigned it with some castoff Minimoog case designs, and called it the Sonic Six in 1972. It was intended to be the “educational Moog.” Bob Moog himself used to tote one of these around for demonstrations. It is the first non-modular duophonic synth.

The Sonic Six is a two-oscillator duophonic synth. It can be set for duophonic, (two notes at a time… one oscillator takes high-note priority and one oscillator takes low note priority), monophonic (both oscs), or monophonic with a drone (one osc changes pitch, one does not). Available waveshapes are pulse (variable), saw, and triangle. The pitch of each oscillator can be controlled by dual LFO, one by contour, and the other by the other oscillator. One can adjust the temperament of the Sonic Six to play scales that have less than 12 notes per octave. The Sonic Six also features pink or white noise.

The Dual LFO design is unique. A mix control allows mixing of each LFO source, while voltage control of each LFO allows additional rate control not often seen in portable synthesizers. Each LFO can produce saw, reverse saw, triangle, and square wave outputs.

The Sonic Six features a ring modulator which allows a player to produce non-chromatic sounds. Audio signals may also be routed through the Moog filter and ring modulator via an external input.

The contour generators are a simple design as compared to other synthesizer models. Decay is provided by a switch, offering long or short decay times. The filter is standard -24dB/oct Butterworth filter design featuring filter cutoff, resonance, keyboard control switch, contour amount, and LFO amount.

The Sonic Six features “glissando”, another word for portamento. This can be assigned to both oscillators or just one, depending upon the setting. The Sonic Six also features a built in amplifier and speaker, as well as a standard line level output.” Link

moog sonic 6 “This is a vintage Moog Sonic Six, a little-known and even less understood two-note synth from the mid ’70s. Every once in a while, one of these pops up on Ebay with very little description of what it really does. I think it’s time to change that. The first thing most people want to know is how it stacks up against the iconic Minimoog. Here is my own (maybe somewhat biased) comparison.

What you get: Think “Minimoog”, then add another LFO, add a ring modulator, add a 4-octave keyboard, add two-note capability, add more modulation routing capabilities, add a built-in carrying case, and add a practice amp and speaker.

What you don’t get: You don’t get a separate envelope for the filter, since there is only one used for both VCA and Filter. You don’t get a mod wheel, so you have to use the knobs on the panel. You don’t get any wood.

VCOs

Sonic Six – 2

Minimoog – 2 (sometimes 3, see LFOs next)

LFOs

Sonic Six – 2 (called Gen X and Gen Y)

Minimoog – 1, or 0 if you use this third oscillator as an additional audio oscillator

Filter

Sonic Six – 1: Resonant Lowpass

Minimoog – 1: Resonant Lowpass

Envelope Generators

Sonic Six – 1, Attack and Decay, with a Mode switch to sustain notes as long as the key is held.down.

Minimoog – 2 , Attack, Decay and Sustain. Separate envelopes for Amp and Filter.

Noise Source

Sonic Six – Yes, Pink or White noise

Minimoog – Yes, Pink or White noise

Ring Modulator

Sonic Six – Yes, use Osc A or GenX/GenY to modulate Osc B or External Input.

Minimoog – No

Pitch Bend Wheel

Sonic Six – Yes

Minimoog – Yes

Modulation wheel

Sonic Six – No, you must use the front panel dials

Minimoog – Yes

Portamento (Glissando or Glide)

Sonic Six – Yes, high note priority

Minimoog – Yes, low note priority

Keyboard

Sonic Six – 49 Keys, Duo, Low note priority for Osc A, High for Osc B, or high note for both Osc in Mono mode. Continuously variable microtonal scaling.

Minimoog – 44 Keys, Mono, Low note priority.

A440 Tone

Sonic Six – Sort of. Turn Osc B tuning knob all the way to the left until it clicks. This puts it in “Concert” tuning, which is supposed to be correct so you can tune Osc A to it.

Minimoog – Yes, dedicated switch

External Audio Input

Sonic Six – Yes, to Ring Modulator, Amp and Filter

Minimoog – Yes, to Amp and Filter

CV/Gate Inputs

Sonic Six – 4: Pitch CV, Volume CV, Filter Resonance CV, 6-pin Moog accessory jack.

Minimoog – 1: 6-pin Moog accessory jack.

Footswitch Inputs

Sonic Six – None

Minimoog – 2: Portamento on/off, Decay on/off.

Carrying Case

Sonic Six – Yes, built in. It’s gray plastic and looks like something a kid would carry a trombone to school in, but it also makes it “Fold and Go”.

Minimoog – No. A case will cost you about $100. Of course, the wood sides are classic and classy.

Speaker

Sonic Six – Yes. It sounds horrible, but at least you don’t need a practice amp. 5cm x 10cm.

Minimoog – No

Belongs in a Museum

Sonic Six – No way. Take it on the road, baby it in the studio, whatever. Just play it.

Minimoog – Ditto

Favorite Sonic Six Tricks

1. Set Gen X to slow ramp up, Gen Y to faster ramp down. Mix the two to get a stair-case wave and generate arpeggiator-like note runs.
2. Set X/Y balance all the way to the left until it clicks. Set Gen X to a very slow triangle wave. Set Osc A to a triangle wave one octave below Osc B. Modulate Osc A with Gen X (just a touch), and modulate Osc B with Osc A (just a touch). Now you have a simple two-operator FM synth.
3. Turn off A/B and turn up the Noise. Set Gen X and Y to square waves and experiment with envelope and filter settings to get rhythmic percussion patterns. Add resonance to taste.

This unit has several different serial numbers on various parts. The exterior case is #1863, I think I saw a #357 on the lower tray, and the upper unit (control panel and two main circuit boards) is #1395. The VCF/VCA board is Rev E, which definitely has the Moog patented transistor-ladder filter, not the older Musonics diode-ladder type.

This is not “New Old Stock”. It’s just old.

This was found in a 53 year old music store. Well, it’s 53 now. It was much younger when I found this synth. This synth had at least two previous owners before I got it, maybe more.

Keyboard Specialties hasn’t been anywhere near this synth. It sounds great to me but somebody should probably recalibrate it. I used some Deoxit on it to get rid of the “scratchies”, but it could probably use some fader lube also. I didn’t want to put anything oily on it in case the new owner wanted to do some more cleaning first, or had some other favorite treatment.
