“For sale this classic Roland SH-5 analog synthesizer in superb condition!

The SH-5 is a classic Roland monosynthesizer with dual VCO, tons of modulation options and dual filter setup.

It comes from the same line of System 100 modulars and older Roland modulars.

Faceplate is super smooth, all original slider caps and knobs, keys are straight, Tolex is very tight.

It has a great sounding resonant multiband filter, fat and creamy. The best vintage Roland sounds possible.

Not much more to prove with the SH-5, its rare, classic, from the mid 70ies and really desirable.” Link

“The unit is in good overall condition and functionally everything works well, a few pots and sliders are a little crackly and could do with some contact lubrication or spray, i have not attempted to this myself.
None of the pots are loose or stiff to move, just some are a little crackly, actually having used the synth a lot during the last few days it seems the noise has reduced the more the pots/sliders have been turned/moved.
There is no lid for the synth.
It is a UK model running on 240V and comes with user manual.” Link

“Classic Roland monosynth from 1976. This one has that rich and raw sound of early Roland. Real candy for the ear!

Condition is really nice, not like out of the box but still nice. And everything works too.

There can be many different sounds in the mixer section at once. Each sound source (noise, vco 1, vco 2, ring mod, audio input) can be routed separately to either of the two filters or directly to VCA. Has stereo outputs, mono output, headphone out (which distorts beautifully) and audio input. Also CV / gate ins and outs as well as expression input. They work well with other synths (used and tested).

220 V with standard european plug. Can be changed to UK one with no additional cost” Link

” Link

“You are bidding on my favourite synth of all time the Roland SH5. I have owned this synth for over four years and everything works perfectly. The rotary controls and the sliders are extremely smooth and free from any kind of issues or noise. When you use these controls you understand the quality build that Roland’s standard was at the time of production. The tolex is far from perfect but that’s to be expected at this age. With that said, the case is probably the toughest case on any synthesizer ever built which is probably why they last so long. As you will see in the photos, this isn’t a museum piece, but it’s rock solid and the paint finish is free from corrosion or rust like some others I have seen. It will be packaged in the original case with another container over that and material between the two. This is a 120 volt model for those in the UK that might be interested. As a bonus, this comes with the original operators manual which I have kept for over 25 years. My first synth was the SH5 (this is my second one).” Link

“I have just about sold all my synths now but this is the one I have held onto the longest. I have owned oberheim 4 voice, Roland Jupiter 8, Original Minimoog, pro-one etc. This is the king of all and that is the only reason it has stayed with me. It is extremely hard for me to part with this wonderful synth but im just not playing it that much anymore. It produces some incredible sounds and has the most amazing sounding bandpass filter ive ever heard. Cosmetically it has a few nicks in the tolex here and there and also is missing the the top of the case but it is functioning 100% and sounds incredible. ” Link

“Excellent condition mid 70′s Roland SH% synthesizer. Functions great, have not noticed any problems with it since owning it for about 9 months. Cosmetics are great, a solid 8/10; just gentle wear and tear around edges etc. An amazing synth that I’d love to keep but work has been slow and I have a system 100…” Link

“Roland SH-5 Monophonic Synthesizer

It’s been in my synth corral for a while now. Excellent machine in top working order …I love the Ring-Mod and Analog input. Band-Pass filter is very cool.

Cosmetics:

A couple of small paint chips in the black next to controllers and high Key – - see photo’s. Compartment lock on door for power cable is missing. Some small wear in the tolex here and there. I did NOT Armour All it for the pics (probably should have) …just the hard truth in digital.

Functionality:

Everything else is good. Best of all it plays in tune and stays in tune!!!
I am a professional tech and take care of quite a few clients. This is one of my own and tweaked for performance. This one dates from 1978 (dates on boards internally) but is as robust as they come. Power Supply is strong and steady – no icky hums or buzzes. Simply a great machine that should last for many years.” Link

“Here’s one for a museum! This is a prototype SH5 made by Roland. The story i got is this was found in a closed music store in the 90′s and was sold, i believe being owned by two people since then, one person being a tech, and i am the third. I am a synthesizer manufacturer and have opened this up to verify it is a prototype (the PCBs are very different than the production model), also A/B’ing it with a production model know first hand it even sounds different. Here is the good and bad
Bad first: it’s missing the cover that holds the power cord in when not in use. Missing the bottom plate that is underneath the key bed, you wont notice it unless you are looking underneath…and the production model I believe is the same so if you find one that is being parted out you could get these two parts. I think two of the latches on the cover are broken. Lastly the separate band pass filter section is whacky, it overloads very easily. I initially was going to fix it but decided to keep it original.
The good: everything (except the separate BPF) works, and you also have the BPF in the “main” filter. All sliders, pots, keys etc work as they should and it sounds amazing!!!!!” Link

” Here is a Roland sh-5, and you probably know what it is!

It’s in pristine condition.

The mod knob of the VCA doesnt work, which is letting you apply a lfo to the volume: A vibrato can do exactly the same thing, so it’s the least of the problem I could have had.. Rather then that, everything works perfectly.” Link

“I am a band director in Alberta, Canada and found this synthesizer in storage while cleaning with a couple of students. The synthesizer is in excellent condition and has been sitting in storage for years untouched. There are no signs of use or wear on the synthesizer itself and it is in mint condition. The case has “PROPERTY OF MHS BAND” spray painted on the exterior and there are minimal scuff and tape marks on the exterior case.

In researching this synthesizer, it appears that this is valued at between $1500-$2000 USD. All proceeds from the sale will go directly into our band program for music and equipment.” Link

Perfect Working Condition – scratches on the unit as see in the pictures ” Link

Roland, SH-5 @ 18 April 2010, “No Comments”

“Up for auction is an amazing example of a Roland SH-5. If you are looking at this auction then you probably already now that this is considered the best monophonic synth that Roland ever produced. That being the case, I won’t bore you with a mindlessly long cut-and-pasted list of specs. You can find those all over the web. What I will tell you is that this unit is in amazing condition. We purchased it along with several other high end pieces that had not been used in quite some time. They had been in storage for several years. This unit played fine but had some scratchy pots, sliders, etc. The boards were removed and all of those have been cleaned and it sounds/performs wonderfully. If you are wondering, nothing needed to be replaced. If you are familiar with these units you know that the key action uses the wire strikes. These are in nice condition. No drop out on the notes, no flutter, no second hit when you release. bottom-line: just how you would expect a quality unit to perform. As you can see the overall cosmetic condition is wonderful as well. Even the power cable compartment in back is in amazing condition. There are a couple of small scratches in both the front (left and right of the keyboard) end caps, but nothing that is dramatic. I only point it out so there are no surprises. In the playing position the lower. front corner of the toIex has a small gap. It is difficult to see in the pics, so again, I wanted to point it out so there are no surprises. Depending on how much of a purist you are there are three issues: A) the on/off switch was replaced several years ago. The switch on this unit is not factory but performs flawlessly, B) The On/Off indicator light appears to be burned out. Happened a long time. No consequence to the performance of the unit, C) The factory supplied lid is missing. However it does come with the case pictured, so you should have no issues there. ” Link

“This vintage Roland SH-5 synthesizer in excellent condition. One of the most popular monosynths Roland ever made. It has been said that the bandpass filter rivals the Oberheim SEM and the modulation options make it truly a modular synthesizer. You can switch in and out various LFO’s along the signal path and it’s one of the few synths with both white AND pink noise. I have had this synth for many years but in reality it’s only been used a couple of times in my studio. I tested it and it still sounds great, everything seems to be working, all knobs and switches intact. As you can see in the photos, all of the labeling is still very clear with no rubbing, fading or schmutz. The keyboard keys are clean and all work properly and feel just great.

There are a few marks on the tolex here and there as you can see in the photos, but nothing major. The only slight modification is an added latch to keep the hatch over the power cord compartment closed. The case has what appears to be the original blue felt lining which still looks great. All locks work fine and keep the cover snug and the handle is in good shape as well.

A Roland SH-5 in this condition is truly a rare find.” Link

sh5 “Up for auction is a Roland SH-5 synthesizer in perfect functioning condition, and near mint physical condition. This is, in my opinion, the best monosynth Roland ever made. Peter Forrest agrees in his A-Z of Vintage Synths and calls this one “a real cracker”. The bandpass filter rivals the Oberheim SEM and the modulation options make it truly a modular synthesizer. You can switch in and out various LFO’s along the signal path and it’s one of the few synths with both white AND pink noise. A really wonderful synth and I’m kicking myself that I have to sell it. I’m only selling to pay some bills.” Link

I had all the Moog’s and ARP’s in the 70′s and this little roland puts them to shame for ease of performance and sound. I am cleaning out my studio closet and want someone who loves the filter sweeps and ring modulation to grab this up. The tolex on the case has a few minor nicks and dings but all latches and hasps are functional. I travelled with this synth for 15 years and never had an issue ever.” Link
