tracks at home. The clips on the original battery door broke off so I bought a new one. The fit is tight,
so its hard to open and close. I use a plastic kitchen spatula. I suggest that you do what I learned to
do a long time ago: put the door on and plan to leave it – use a well regulated DC power supply.
I’ll include both doors. The electronics inside are all original, I’ve never open this up (rare) so the sound

All weak/cold solder joints have been spruced up for added insurance and longevity (even though it worked just fine before). A Brand New Power Switch has been installed to remedy the dreaded tuning problems associated with them. It works perfectly, and all the sliders move around like they should. And looks pretty clean as well. I’d give it an 8/10 cosmetically. No modifications other than the new power switch have been made to this one either. “Der SH 101 ist sehr gut als Techno- und Acidmaschine zu benutzen. Der Sound liegt irgendwo zwischen der TB 303 und dem Juno. Aus diesem Grund habe ich das Gerät vor ca. 10 Jahren gebraucht erstanden.
Der Zustand war damals nicht so toll. Das Bodenblech musste ich neu lackieren und das Batteriefach ist schon immer defekt. Das ist aber solange egal, so lang man ein Netzteil hat;-) Desweiteren habe ich schon mal Tasten der Tastatur repariert, sowie das Trägerblech der Tasten lackiert. Im inneren musste ich ein paar Plastikgewinde kleben. Der optische Eindruck ist absolut in Ordnung. Die Bedienseite (oben) ist sehr gut für das Alter von ca. 25 Jahren.
Zu den Mängeln:
- Batteriefach defekt
- Noiseregler geht nicht mehr (seit ca. 6 Monaten)
-die Tastatur hat schon mal Ausfälle gehabt, die ich beseitigen konnte. Aktuell gehen aber zwei Tasten nicht.
Das sollte aber alles machbar sein. Ich habe ja selber schon Hand angelegt. Das ist alles noch das kleine Einmaleins der Elektronik.

Up for sale is a Roland SH-101 “Nova Mod” version. It adds many unique sounds and functions on the original SH-101.
SH-101 Nova-MOD Features :
VCF FM : Amazing new sounds are now added through this feature. Six FM Sources are available.
LFO Clock Input : Syncing the Apreggiator and LFO to external drum modules and sequencers in now possible. As well, interesting feedback loops can be created.
PW Modulation Source Selection : Now you can choose a pulse width source. It is indeendent from the LFO’s waveform setting. OSC sources are included.
Pulse width to near 0% : Pulse width effects are now made more extreme and powerful.
External Audio Input : Just plug in a foot pedal or a CV from a midi convertor and your SH-101 will sing
LFO Rate Scalar : Ever hear a bell sound out of SH-101? Try this on Hi!!! Want a really slow sweep…. you got it too.
Overdrive : You may notice that this acts more like a “filter cleaning” knob as the filter is overdriven at it’s minimum setting and clean at the max.
Pulse width to near 0%- By closing the pulsewidth to a spike, new sounds can be attained by the sh-101. This spike wave source is very useful for brightening a bass patch. In another application, in which only full ramp waveform is assigned, manually raising and lowering the spike waveform’s amplitude has been compared to sounding like a wave table sweep. As well, LFO modulation of the puldewidth is made more dramatic because of the closer approach to 0%.
Pulsewidth Modulation Source Selection – A six way rotary switch enables you to chose the pulsewidth modulation sources independently of the LFO’s waveform setting. This modulation source makes many new and interesting sounds. A randomly modulated pulsewidth is especially unique and plesant. The PW modulation sources are : LFO Triangle/LFO Square/ LFO random/ Sub OSC -1 octave Square / Sub OSC -2 Octave pulse / LFO Noise * The sub OSC mod sources creates a unique bass enhancement becuase of their higher frequency and keytracking. The result is a richer and deeper sound. As well, though there are only two sub OSC sources, changing the sub OSC switch -1/-2/-2 result in even further modulation effects.
LFO rate Scalar – A three way toggle switch scales the overall range of the sh-101’s internal LFO clk (the existing lfo rate still functions normally). The scalar settings are normal/low/high. In the low setting, a cycle of over 45 seconds can be attained. this is great for mild changes in trance tye music. In the high mode, up to 1200Hz can be used to creat interesting cross-mod bell like sounds. Perfect for industrial music and clanging metalic sounds. High mode works especially well when creating a synthetic kick drum atch or short wave radio sounds.
LFO Clock Input – A 1/4″ jack allows rthe insertion of an external clock signal to drive the 101’s LFO. This injected signal triggers the LFO but does not change it’s waveform. Buy applying a clockm, LDO and arpeggiator are both synced to the external source. This makes for very moving and groovy patterns with only a drum box and nova-moded 101. A particaly nice application is tio modulate the VCF cutoff with a random LFO while playing the sequencer. Of course you can at the same time, inject a seperate clock into the apregiator via the 101’s Ext in Jack,. This will enable you to run the arpeggiator and LFO at different speeds. As a bonus, audio can be injected to drive the LFO. A simple trick is to patch the headphone output into the ext lfo input. This feedback loop makes for sounds that can be nildly distored to heavily distorted by simply adjusting the vcf;s mod amount. No need for an external distortion processor! This effect is great for slow sweeps with a resonating filter setting
External Audio Input – A 1/4″ jack and toggle switch allow external audio to be injected . A rotary pot controls the amplitude of the injected signal. It can be routed to on of two sources : 1/ directly into the filter along with the osc waveforms. External processing of audio through the vCf and env is a typical feature on some synths however a seperate trigger can be aplied to fire the sh-101’s envelop. 2./ Into the vcf’s cutoff modulation point (an external fm source)
VCF CV Input – An external CV can be applied to the 101 via this 1/4″ jack. This feature is typical on a juno 60, jupiter 4 and Pro one. A midi controller converted to a CV or an exression foot pedal are typically connected here.
VCF FM – VCF FM is the most powerful nova mod feature. It can be used in moderation to simply add brightness to a bass patch with low frequncies (due to sybtractive synthesis). Or it can be used to create powerful cross mod sounds that are difficult to explain…they must be heard!!! These sounds are somewhat aggressive, distorted, bell like but most importantly, not attainable on a regular sh-101. These sounds are similar to heard on mini-moog with it’s third LDO assigned. One examle : dial patch wuth only a ramp waveform assigned but at the same time, modulate the vcf cutoff with the pulsewidth,. manually change the pulsewidth to vary the Fm effect. It is qutie unique. You can then switch in Sub OSC -2 Oct. Pulse as the Fm source then adjust the -1 oct/ -2 oct/ -2 oct switch to change the sound further. finally swing the pulsewith waveform as the FM source but switch from manuak to LFO modulation and then play with the PW mod’s waveform. A rotary pot controls the amount of modulation. A six way rotary switch selects the FM source : Pulse waveform / Ramp Waveform / -1 Oct Sqr / -2 Oct Sqr / -2 Oct Pulse / Noise . As well , although there are only two Sub OSC sources, the sub osc switch -1/-2/-2 changes the sound, giving even more variety.
Question : Do I keep the original sh-101 sound and functions with this Nova Mod ?
Answer : Yes, you keep all original sounds and functions with this nova mod. All added switch has an option for the original setting, so you can use all the regular sh-101 sound if you want. ” Link

“For sale is my red SH 101 with mod grip, which I have had and looked after for 17 years. The SH 101 was produced in 1982 and has had many artists fall in love with it’s sound and design.
The Roland SH 101 was only ever produced in Grey, Blue and Red, (red being the rarest one). There are different colours around but these are all custom made, Roland only ever made them in the 3 colours I have stated.
The synth itself is in very good condition, everything works perfectly and it has no missing knobs or sliders. The battery compartment is free from any corrosion also. There are a couple of little scaratches (minor) but they do not affect the aesthetics of this synth in any way. There is no strap button on the right of the synth for the shoulder strap but the mod grip has it’s one.” Link
“This is a Roland SH-101 analog synth with a custom hard-shell road case. If you’re looking at this auction, then you probably know what this is: a great, early 80s monosynth capable of some excellent Roland basses and leads. This 101 is in great shape and sounds and plays wonderfully. There are only two small issues that don’t affect the play at all: 1) the joystick bender, when bent right, doesn’t snap back instantly. It’s almost as if there were tape on it, but there isn’t – I don’t know what happened as I’m not the original owner. The joystick still works perfectly at bending the pitch and adding modulation, it’s just a little slower to snap back when bent to the right. And 2) there are two small chips in the plastic near the battery door (see photo.) These are purely cosmetic and ARE NOT very big (4 to 5 mm.) The battery door works fine. This SH-101 comes with the original SH-101 manual and has a nice custom hard-shell case which would cost at least $100 by itself. This is a great little monosynth and it can produce a lot of classic Roland tones.” Link

“Dieser SH-101 sollte eigentlich zu einem „Nova Mod“ SH-101 umgebaut werden.
Wie auf den Bilder zu sehen ist, wurde das Gehäuse schon mit den zusätzlichen Reglern, Schaltern und zusätzlichen
Klinkeneingängen erweitert.
Leider ist der SH-101 jedoch bei der Umbauaktion kaputt gegangen. Der VCO gibt kein Signal mehr von sich.
Alles andere funktioniert jedoch wie zuvor. Filter, Env, LFO, Sequenzer, Tastatur usw. funktioniert so wie sie sollen.
Jedoch vom VCO nichts mehr zu hören. Nur der Noisegenerator funktioniert in der Oszillatorabteilung.
Das heißt also, das Gerät lässt sich einschalten und kann zB per Sequenzer eine Noise-Sequnens abspielen, filtern und mit dem LFO und der Hüllkurve manipulieren.
Die Interne Verdrahtung der zusätzlichen Schalter und Regler ist noch nicht vorgenommen, so dass der SH-101 weitestgehend im Originalzustand ist. Vielleicht kann ein findiger Bastler den VCO wieder zum Leben erwecken und die Modifikationen fortführen. Eine Bauanleitung für die „Nova Mod“ findet man im Internet. Ich habe leider keine Zeit ihn selbst zu reparieren und will ihn deshalb nun verkaufen. Ohne Netzteil und Manual. “As you can see this SH-101 is in super condition. No real cosmetic issues at all.
Because I too purchase old synths via eBay I try to describe them as accurately and honestly as possible. I really hate getting a supposed “..perfect working condition” synth to only find out there is something wrong with it. No surprises here.
On to the good points: great condition, works perfectly off batteries or AC power (included), every single function works* which means the cv/gate ins and outs work, no scratchy pots or sliders, sequencer, etc.
It stays in reasonable tune for a true VCO synth; which means that every now and again you may to tune it to a reference tone (much like a guitar). Personally I just do this by ear from a A440 tone, takes less than 30 secs. Of course with any VCO analogue it needs a warm-up time. If you already own or owned a VCO before you know what I mean.
*The only negative thing I can say which does not work is the LFO mod from either the bender or the mod grip. LFO mod works fine via the slider just not from those two. Pitch bend works fine though.

“You are bidding on an extremely nice-condition, well cared for SH-101. It is in near-mint condition for it’s age. Cosmetically great shape, all sliders are really smooth. Only the lightest surface scratches. The biggest cosmetic issue is the little “click” tabs that hold the cover in place have been lost to time. However, the cover stays on just fine unless you turn the synth upside down and shake it around. Under normal use this will never be an issue. Runs on battery power great.
Functionally, every single feature works perfectly and it sounds amazing with one exception: The pitch/mod wheel has an issue. The modulation works just fine, but the pitch bender is reading as though it is always in the left-most position, or down/lower position. Moving the pitch bender only makes the slightest change to the sound. I’m not sure why this is. I opened up the synth to see if I saw anything obvious and everything was super-clean, so I’m not sure. You can still use the pitch/filter bend in this downward value by sliding the amount of the filter or pitch up and down. Meaning you can get downward pitch or filter bends by using the sliders instead of the wheel.” Link 
“This Synthesizer (Roland SH101 Grey) is in great shape in full working order. Nothing is loose or falling off all sliders and knobs are secure and work well. The battery door has a small nick in it but still locks closed. Comes with a power supply (not original) I even have a cloth cover I made for it, I will through in to keep dust off. Sounds Great!
The SH-101 is very cool, especially for techno, drum&bass and ACID! It’s a monophonic bass synthesizer. Its sound lies somewhere between the TB-303 and a Juno bass sound. It has a lot of simple but cool features. You can control the VCF, pitch, LFO or all from the pitch bender. It has a white noise generator, arpeggiator with up, down and up/down patterns and a simple real-time sequencer. The LFO offers random, sine, square or noise waveforms. And normal or auto portamento effects give you that elastic bass sound. There are external clock inputs for the sequencer and arpeggiator, CV/GATE inputs and outputs and a CV hold pedal.
Unfortunately there is no patch memory storage and although it has no MIDI there are upgrades available for it from many analog service companies that will allow you to incorporate it into any MIDI studio environment. It can also be controlled by MIDI using a CV/MIDI converter. It’s great for bass sounds or bubbly analog effects. They come in three different flavors – gray, blue or red (there was a VERY rare white version too)! It can also be strapped on like a guitar for live performance using the optional Hand Grip.” Link 
“A Roland SH-101 used. Im not the original owner of thus synth has a few problems stated below.
One key is sort of broken, makes sound but could be fixed. NOTCHIPED
The volume is a little low but can fixed if need be but still lets out a very good amount of audio.
Also the sawtooth is out. This will need a new slider!
Also the tip of the controller needs to be replaced being that someone knocked it off.

“I have a blue Roland SH-101 monophonic analog synthesizer (with Boss PSA AC Adapter) in great condition for sale. This synth needs no introduction. If you’re reading this, then you probably already know that this is one of Roland’s most famous synths. Perfect for basslines and acid lines, this piece along with the tb-303 defined the acid techno sound.
The unit is in good cosmetic shape with only a couple of small scratches .The ONLY thing not functional is the VCO slider for the pitch bender (which is the only slider off to the far end without a cap.) This parameter is only used for doing pitch bends with the bender. The bender still works for the filtering and modulation so unless you do tons of pitch bends with the bender this isn’t a big concern. I usually just sequence pitch bends with the auto portamento. Everything else sounds great and is rock solid.
Also included is a Philip Rees little mcv midi to cv converter that is in near mint condition so you’ll be ready to sequence via midi immediately. Insurance is included in shipping fee.” Link

“You are bidding on a Vintage Roland SH-101 Analog Synthesizer Synth Keyboard. This cool vintage synth has a few issues, these being that some of the screws are missing from the back so the back’s a little loose, and the very lowest key (furthest left on the keyboard) is sort of weak sounding when you hit it, but otherwise everything looks to be in good working condition. I don’t have the power adapter, but I placed six “C” batteries inside and she powered right up, with most of the knobs and buttons seeming to have an effect of the odd beeps, swooshes and buzzes this synth makes. Still, there are really so many switches and such, I can’t guarantee every last thing will work as intended but from what I can see, the keyboard looks to certainly be in good overall working shape.” Link
