“This is an immaculate Prophet 5 version 3.3. Everything is working perfectly, recently tuned up by Jeff Blenkinsopp himself from the legendary EARS Analog Lab in NYC, the premier lab for vintage analog synthesizers in the East Coast.
From filters, to oscillators, to modulation, to keys working seamlessly, everything is 100% working perfectly. The wood condition is impeccable, bright and lucid as new, the synth has been taken care of like a spoiled child over the years. I am a an amateur weekend warrior so no gigs, non-smoking studio all the time has been its home.
The nameplates are also in immaculate condition and the same with the paint around the pitch and mod wheel which also are in perfect condition. In short, this is as good as new. Jeff himself told me that this is one of the best Prophets he has seen in years.
The back of the synth is clean, no rust, beautiful paint and nameplates. The nameplates are like new, no chipping in the paint, like factory new as you can see from the pics.

The plastic side panels have a few scuffs, but also included in the auction is a set of new wooden side panels which are effectively “as new”. This is a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer with hard-shell case. This is a rev 3.x – not sure which one, probably a 3.3. Wonderful, big, bright Curtis machine. Kind of pains me to put this up for auction, but I also own an OB-Xa and the two are just a bit too similar to justify owning both. That’s really the only reason I’m selling this, because it’s a fantastic machine. Those big, amazing saw-wave and brass sounds that you always hear? This is where they come from, and they will blow you away. I’ve lost hours with this thing cranked through an amp, it is that wonderful of a playing experience. Plenty of Youtubes and sound files on the web for this. I may put up a brief demo to show that all of the keys are working, etc.
On to the condition. Cosmetically, with a 10 being “brand new” or “museum quality”, I’d say this is probably a 6 or so. Maybe a 7. It has definitely been played and there are the usual signs of wear on the exterior: scratched up bottom, some cracks/chips near the corners and screws of the wooden sides, some scratches on the panel and a few knobs that have lost their luster. Most of the exterior jacks (save the audio output) are green with a hint of corrosion. These could easily be replaced and probably should be at some point. I haven’t tested all of the jacks, but the audio output jack is new and works great. I couldn’t get my sustain pedal to work with it, but that could be for a number of reasons. I hope the photos capture the condition pretty well. If not, I can send along larger photos of specific parts of the synth. The bottom line is that this is a player’s synth, not necessarily a collector’s synth.
Electronically, save the jacks mentioned above, the synth is wonderful. 5 big, beautiful voices. Like most analogs of this vintage, it needs to warm up for a few minutes, but then it will be ready to play for hours. I’ve put about $500 into fixing the electronics. It has been professionally serviced by Midwest Music Menders here in Chicago. They replaced some bad chips and also re-bushed and leveled the keyboard for me, so it plays very well. The tuning knob and the pitch wheel do not necessarily line up exactly to the middle or bottom of their positions, but the Prophet will absolutely tune to A440 and stay there – there’s even a handy A440 button for testing. No scratchy knobs and all of them work, same with all of the keys.
I will pack the Prophet well and ship it in the hard-shell case ($100 by itself.) Get the legend for what is by far the lowest starting bid on eBay. And don’t worry, I’m not one of these crazy people that thinks they’re going to get 4 or 5 grand for a Prophet these days.” Link

It’s like having two Prophet 5′s in one, but with a few added features like a built in sequencer, a 3 band EQ and keyboard modes like double and alternate. This is the later version with midi installed! Loaded with the original patches. I recently had it fully serviced, it is 100% ready to play and is fully functional. Only two minor issues barely worth mentioning; 1 LED is out on the Single switch (you can still tell which voice mode you are in; if you don’t see any LEDs light up, you are in the Single mode…it would take a lot of work taking the boards out to replace one LED so I didn’t bother getting that fixed). Also the side cassette mechanism has been disconnected inside, since it is unlikely anyone would bother saving sequences to cassette tapes that you can’t even find any more. Cosmetically it is in excellent shape, looks really nice. See pictures below for details. I also have a flight/road case that will be included, though the case is not in the best of shape, it still works well for transporting the synth safely. “-I am the original and only owner of this synthesizer purchased new, back in 1986, which was rarely used and only in a home studio setting. It has never been used in a gig. The condition is excellent with the exception of the data slider. The stem of the data slider is broken, but the slider is still functional. You can operate it by slipping it into the the slot on the surface and sliding the switch up and down. Replacement data sliders are available through Winecountrysequential.com. when they have them in stock. It is my understanding that after market sliders can be installed also.
There is a small scuff mark on the logo at the back side of the unit that you can see in the photo. Other than that, the unit is clean. It still looks new. All lights are operational and the LCD is bright (although hard to photograph) and easy to read.
I am not an expert at all the functions and features available on this synth, but as far as I know, all features are functional. The keyboard was rarely played so the velocity and aftertouch are great.” Link

This board comes from the original user. I have had it for less than a year and it has been used solely in my studio. The main thing about this board that I love is the richness of the bass. When comparing them through my monitors they really feel a lot fuller than a similar soft synth (even the Prophet 5 Software that I use) I’m selling the board to help make payments on my home. Everything is fully functional but the number two key is sticky. The volume knob is a little bit touchy if you are trying to adjust it while playing. It hard to tell if it performs their main function as the voices are bad. Missing one master tune plastic knob cap.

“History: This P5 is a Rev 3.2, 120 presets. No midi. Serial #2987. I bought it from the second owner in March of this year (2011). From the looks of it when I first got it, it was certainly babied. I’ve had zero problems with it, with the exception of the occasional broken j-wire (easy fix). It came to me with service documentation (done by Wine Country in 2004), at which point they performed their basic checkup. I replaced the key bushings with new ones a few of weeks ago (wow, what a difference!). The keys could still be leveled a bit, but I got them pretty close (for me anyways!) Its been in my smoke free studio since the day I got it, and hasn’t moved (except to take these pictures).
Physical Condition: It’s in really good shape. Very few flaws in the wood, and the front panel is super clean; no fading. The bottom panel has some scratches, but nothing major or out of the ordinary. Pictures 5 & 6 depict the ‘biggest’ wood scratch and front panel paint chip.
Electronic Condition: All knobs, buttons, and switches function normally. I used this daily, so no scratchy pots. All lights function normally as well. All 5 voices tune up nicely.
Comes with: Original Manual, a spare name badge, and a spare j-wire.
Overall, from what I’ve seen, this is one of the nicest P5′s out there. I spent a decent amount of time with it and came up with some great sounds. Even the factory preset sounds are great. I hate the idea of letting this go, but my financial situation dictates that I must.” Link

“This synth is in very good condition, never been gigged, and stored in a smoke-free, temperature controlled environment. One key, second lowest F#, seems intermittent, but response improved every time I hit it, so I’m guessing it’s just a bad contact that should get better with time. Either way, it’s easily serviceable and should not pose a critical issue. All knobs and buttons work noise-free, all jacks seem tight and reliable.
I upgraded the keypad a short while ago with a modern version from Technology Transplant that seems more reliable and should last a long time. I don’t think the replacement keypad is even available anymore. and it seems like one of those design-flaw inevitable failure points. No need to worry here.

ISSUES: Per my tech, both VCO on 1 voice drifts high, all other voices seems to work. Only #8 & #9 button on the program select membrane button engages, rest of the #’s doesn’t. Tune, preset, Record, Seq 1/2, Arp up/down, arp assign engages. Factory sounds are gone. I recorded a seq on 1 and 2 and it works. It also retains the seq after turning on and off. My tech cleaned all the controls & contacts. All keys, knobs/switches, pitch/mod wheel works.
Minor marks/scratches/scuffs but overall keyboard doesn’t look bad. Most scratches are in the bottom. It’s in very good cosmetic shape. Comes with a power cord only. ” Link

Also included with the auction are the following manuals/literature: MAX Operation Manual and Max Midiguide. The original power adapter is also included.
I have spent a good amount of time with this keyboard to test it out and everything should be functioning properly. All keys and other function buttons located at the top toggle properly and make contact without hesitation. All keys press quite smoothly and do not get hung up on one another. Start/Stop/Recording etc. functions appear to be working as intended along with the voices. There is some cosmetic wear to the unit which can be seen in the pictures above but this has not affected the overall operation of the unit itself.” Link
