“Good condition for an instrument of this age. Some dust and wear on the pots, which manifests itself as a crackle while you sweep through the range of a pot. If like me you want the 808 for studio use – then there is no issue. If you want to have the 808 on stage and sweep through decay and tuning settings straight from the analogue pots then do you should factor in a service to clean these pots. All of the above really goes without saying, but some of you may be new to vintage gear so I mention it for you guys. All of the sounds on this instrument sound beautiful. Link

” I have for sale a vintage Roland TR-808 that has been professionally upgraded with an internal MIDI interface! No bulky ugly outboard MIDI interface box with a nasty wall wart power supply. The MIDI interface installed is simply tacked onto the circuit. There has been no invasive cutting of the circuit board, and if you want to, the MIDI interface can be easily removed and the drum machine can be set right back to stock condition. The MIDI instalation was completely non-destructive. Look at the pictures to see what the interface looks like. Included is the original switch with it’s cable if you want to set it back to stock.
This is the all time classic hip hop drum machine that you still hear in hip hop productions today! This tr-808 sounds excellent, and with the built in MIDI interface it is easier than ever to sync up to a computer. I have been syncing it up to Ableton Live and it is rock solid, and sounds so good. The sync switch has been replaced with a three position switch, and all you have to do is set it to the middle position for MIDI to be implemented. It’s very easy to turn MIDI on. With the MIDI interface you can start/stop the internal sequencer of the tr-808 from your computer sequencer, AND you can trigger all the individual sounds on a keyboard at the same time while it’s running! You can also use the TR-808 as a sound module if you don’t want to use it’s built in sequencer. If you want to use the TR-808 in DIN sync mode all you have to do is simply switch it to input or output in the back. This is by far the best MIDI interface available for the TR-808, and it has been very well engineered. You can change the MIDI parameters through SYSEX commands, and it is easy to do. Included are all the MIDI manuals, a CD along with a MIDI cable that came with the kit.” Link

I got this Classic Drum Machine about 5 years ago in High School from my Dad. I had hopes to make great music with it, however I never took the time to figure out how to work it and just stuck with the computer programs I was use to.
Functionally, I have made it actually produce sound about 3 times when I first got it, but when I tried to use it the other day I could not get it going. The lights come on and all, but I have not a clue why I can not work it. I admit I only hooked up one audio output but I think it should still work. The battery holder is still screwed in and attached on the bottom. The Machine may just need a little service but I do not want to get into that.
Cosmetically the machine is missing (two) Knobs and has some slight spots of rust, as seen in the photo. This is due to it’s old age.” Link

I got this drum machine last fall from it’s 2nd owner. It is is in great condition.
Functionally, it is in perfect working order – DIN works, as well as all functions. The battery holder in the back has been replaced with a new one by Wes Taggart at Analogics. He serviced this machine and said that there were no signs of any battery leaks at any point in it’s life, and that nothing needed replaced as it was in perfect working order! He cleaned the machine and tested the functions to make sure it was all ok.
Cosmetically there machine is in great shape. There is the faintest sign of slight rust coming in on the side, as seen in the photo, but no brown rust has surfaced on the machine itself. This is due to it’s old age. All knobs, buttons, pots and everything else are intact and none of them are scratchy or noisy.” Link

“The most iconic and sought after drum machine of our time: The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer. Unit powers up, lights up, and plays. I don’t know how to program it, but I did get all the sounds to play using the “tap” button. The preprogrammed sounds were responsive to all the knobs. While I don’t understand what they do, the switches light up and work in that there is a definite change in the patterns being played when I toggle them. The start/stop, tap buttons may need to be cleaned as they work but sometimes you need to hold down or hit more than once. I don’t know how to program in a pattern to test it’s being sold as-is. Even through my headphones that famous 808 kick drum bass sound is huge! It’s true that the software versions don’t even come close” Link

I want to describe this Roland in depth so this might get a little long. This 808 is basically in the same shape as it was when I bought it about nine years ago. I will describe it cosmetically first and please check out the pictures.
-The tempo and measures knobs are missing (both work)
- The start/stop button is missing (works)
- The number 13 button is missing but the switch works
-The number 15 button was replaced at one point but doesnt match the number 14 and 16 (switch works)
- There are several screws missing on the bottom panel
- The right front corner of the plastic molding has a crack (see pics)
- The snappy knob for the snare drum is missing the white inlay but works
- There are some minor nicks and scratches but overall this is a good looking 808
Overall the machine functions great but there are a couple of minor issues that would have to be addressed.
- The number one tactile switch has to be pressed a little harder to make it turn on/off. I guess that
it would have to be replaced in the future.
- The number 3 and number 7 buttons are a little loose when pressed but the switches work
- The start/stop works, but if the button is replaced, the whole switch would need to be replaced as well
because the cross shape part of the switch is worn and would not provide a good mounting surface.” Link
