This is a later serial number OBXa, so the full 8 voices and extra patch memory were installed at the Oberheim factory in 1982. This synth was recapped about 5 years ago, and the battery was replaced today. Cosmetically, it’s in decent cosmetic shape, but there are a few scratches here and there on the surface, as well as some tape residue on the right side that was from a previous owner, who was Danny Elfman (not terribly relevant, but I think it’s cool to know the history of a piece of gear!) Functionally, it takes awhile to tune up using the auto tune function (as do ALL OB-Xa’s, from what I understand) and the keys could definitely use new bushings, as a few stick and double trigger. These are VERY minor issues that arise with ALL analog poly synths (especially Oberheims) and even a tech with very limited knowledge could fix them. ” Link

Soweit ich weiß, war der Oberheim früher in einem professionellen Tonstudio im Einsatz, was auch die beiden nachträglich eingebauten Features erklären würde. Zum einen verfügt er über zwei XLR-Ausgänge und zum anderen gibt es auf der Rückseite 16 Miniklinke-Buchsen, deren Funktion mir allerdings nicht bekannt ist. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass so die einzelnen Midi-Spuren nach GM-Standard abgenommen werden können (bitte nicht lachen, falls das völliger Blödsinn ist … ich bin wie gesagt eigentlich Gitarrist

Vintage 1982 Oberheim OB-Xa analog synthesizer in very good condition. Unit was professionally serviced and checked out in 2010, everything is 100% functional and sounds great. As you can see in the photos the overall cosmetic condition is very good, with only a couple of minor scratches on top of unit. Wood end panels are in good shape with some scratches and nicks mostly around the edges. Bottom of unit has larger scratches and scuffs. Buttons, knobs, keys and connectors are undamaged. All keys feel fine except for the A above middle C key which feels a little stiffer than the others; this can probably be easily fixed with a new bushing.

“What we have here is a vintage Oberheim OB-XA (8 voice polyphony), DSX Polyphonic Sequencer, and Manuals (Service and Owners)
Used it years ago (about 5) and it worked great. Stored it for 5 years and now it powers on but no sound comes out.
Repeat, lights up, all circuitry inside looks fine, but NO SOUND.
I am not an electronic tech, but went through the trouble years back to obtain service manuals for both keyboard and sequencer. This is good practice for any vintage electronics, as they aren’t easy to come by when you need a tech to fix them.
Most likely the malfunction is a loose card or cable inside somewhere, but I don’t have the time to debug it.
No missing/broken knobs/cards or anything. Only noticable flaw in keyboard is a serial jack shaped hole on the back that used to house the serial cable interface to the DSX. I used it for years with the cable going directly inside to the board with no problems. I do not have the interface cable to the DSX, but this is a standard serial ribbon cable (I made one years ago but it got lost in the move).

This one has 4 voices. It was an 8 voice model, the previous owner sold 4 of the voice cards. It can be expanded up to 8 voices again. All of the cables are in there, just add the voice cards. In fact I had it expanded to 5 voices (a friend had a voice card I used) when I was in the studio recording my CD “Poison Kissed Mind” (available at http://bobmasseymusic.com ) This model has 120 patches. No midi. This synth is in full working order. Cosmetically it’s about a 6.5? I guess. There are some scuffs and the high C key is slightly warped, it doesn’t affect the way it plays. “This is a Vintage Oberheim OB-Xa 8 Voice Synthesizer. Considering that it’s nearly 30 years old, it’s still in excellent condition. This Obie was serviced sometime before I obtained it in 2005, and has been mostly stored away. I’ve used it for occasional recording only. I believe that it was gigged before I purchased it. There are some cosmetic scratches and scrapes on the top and back . The wood sides are nearly mint. All buttons and switches are intact, and function properly. The Auto-Tune seems to be working on all 8 voices after a brief warm-up, but when using the pitch bender, it doesn’t always come back to the exact pitch. It might just need to be cleaned or serviced again, but there are no serious issues with the Obie. The keyboard is in excellent shape with no broken, or sticking keys. The Flight Case and interior foam are in fine condition. A copy of the Instructions and schematics are included. **Please note that the combined weight of the Synth and case is over 90lbs and local pick-up is strongly encouraged if you’re in Southern California. If you want it shipped, you can choose which service to use and pay only actual shipping costs, but it will still be pretty steep. “This is the big one! An 8-voice, 120 program monster. I bought this a few years back for the “analog experience” and it delivers, but it is not a good fit the way I work. Physically, this machine is in very good shape, with some scratches on the wood end pieces and scratches on the bottom and bottom-front edge. All buttons work and all knobs work, though a couple a little scratchy. The light on the C program button does not light, but all other lights work. All keys play well, but a few are a little uneven. The Auto-tune goes through all 8 voices. Sound-wise it sounds good except one voice is not in tune. You can hold 7 notes and all are in tune, but the eighth one is out of tune. My guess is that this machine could use a full servicing, which would likely return it to excellent condition. I am not a technician, but I am doing my best to provide an honest accessment of the synth so potential buyers know exactly what they are getting. Please ask if you have further questions.
I know some of the history of this synth, and it was gigged in years past, however, it was always transported in the included Calzone two-piece, hard-shell case. The case is lined with 2 inches of form and keeps the synth very safe and secure. The only problem with the case is that the laminate is broken off some of the bottom (see picture). “Hello, I am selling my Oberheim OBXa 4 voice analog synthesizer. This unit is overall in good condition but could use a bit of service work. This system plays just fine with the exception of the following:
1) Voice card #2 I believe needs a new CEM 3310 envelope chip for the filter…(the filter chips work just fine). This chip can currently be purchased for $45.00 online in a current ebay auction. This hasn’t been much of an issue for many of the sounds that I use, but you may still want to replace it.
2) The Pulse width knob seems to also affect the pitch of the oscilators, so I’m thinking that this probably shouldn’t work this way.
3) The filter knob could be a bit smoother.
4) The 2 levers controlling pitch and modulation need to be re-calibrated…hopefully that is all that is needed.
5) The keyboard action is a bit stiff for my liking.
6) The light on the Unison button does not light up, but the unison button (function) works just fine.
Again, this unit plays fine for me (even with the items noted above) and has not been a source of frustration, but I also want to make it clear to any potential buyer of the issues that I have found by playing it and owning it. This unit has been kept in my smoke free studio during my ownership of it, and I could not smell amy traces of smoke on it when I purchased it. This is a 4 voice unit but whoever buys this could expand it to more voices if they wanted to. All 4 voices auto tune just fine. Based on just the the 4 voice cards inside with their respective chips, I’m going to start the bid at under their going rate at $1195.00. This unit will make someone a great base Oberheim OBXa which can be expanded on if so desired, for myself I’ve found that a 4 voice has been plenty of voices for my style of playing, and is a more affordable way of getting into an Oberheim compared to what an 8 voice system would currently cost.” Link

In Great Shape Oberheim OBXa works wonderfully. Includes Heavy duty Anvil Case which most on here dont!!. Just had gone over by a former Oberheim tech that used to build them. He gave it a big thumbs up. Some minor scratches and a ding in the plastic below the keys shown in pic from a solder iron when a tech on the road was fixing a j-wire. The road case is dinged and scratched but that is why the keyboard is still in good shape. Just used that case to ship from Alabama to Califorinia and back to the OBXa tech to go through it align it etc. The road case does need new foam inside as I am just using loose foam now

A copy of the original factory program tape so you can restore to factory. Currently has some of my created sounds or splits in it. I also have the original factory tape and will try and find that as well.

Only problem I note is just recently is if you dont play for awhile some keys are stiff very first time you hit them but perfectly fine after that. AND SOUNDS GREAT! After researching the above I found the bushings on the Pratt Read key system are getting old. I found a complete set of bushings including shipping for $25.29 and they are pretty easy to replace. Found simple instructions on another site but they sell the bushings for more but if you want that factory brand new key feel its easy to get but not necessary as stated above since they work fine. I will supply you with all that info. if you win. I really dont want to sell this but have been hit hard by the economy but want to make sure this keyboard is a good experience for you like it has been for me.” Link

It’s in great shape! Only light, small surface scratching from light use in the last 30 years. The wood side panels are in great shape. No dust in the interior (as seen in the pictures) and circuit boards are sparkling clean. The tape monitor switch (a useless feature removed on later OBXA models) was loose and removed. The actual circuit remains intact. Item works phenomenally. The auto-tune works perfectly and tunes this thing instantly every time. The buttons engage first time, every time, no dead LED’s. It’s completely stock, no additions or modifications and all original apart from the above listed maintenance parts and top lid screws. The power switch light has dimmed, out but the switch itself works great. The heat strip in the back is original and intact, they often wind up missing on these. Some oxidation has built up on some of the screws and nuts in the back (a common cosmetic issue on these). These are standard screws and nuts that can be picked up at Home Depot or any home score, but I preferred to keep the vintage ones. I’m including several screws that will fit the OBXA. I have included an open-lid picture so those familiar with these could recognize the service work that was recently done. All 8 voices work and unision works excellent, stacking all 8 voices to produce some of the fattest, thickest, and beefiest leads I’ve ever heard. It was used on countless 1980’s hits and continues to be used today.” Link

“This Oberheim OBxA is in very good condition and has the 120 program upgrade installed. However, one of the oscillators does not tune precisely with the auto-tune so I have disabled it. Therefore, this is essentially a 7 voice synthesizer. All other functions on this keyboard work perfectly. I have replaced all the key bushings and leveled the keys so the keyboard plays like brand new. I recently downloaded the service manual and went through all the tuning and calibration procedures. The battery has also been replaced. I need to sell this keyboard to generate money towards a new computer for my studio. Money is tight right now, otherwise I would never sell it. This keyboard has been set up in my smoke free studio for the past 20 years or so and I am the original owner. The synth has some scratches on the metal chassis mostly on the bottom and around the edges but a black sharpie has done a great job of hiding these. “Hello, I am very sorry to have to sell this piece but here it goes.. As you can see, you probably won’t ever find an OB-Xa in this condition. Practically new in every aspect. It was fully checked and serviced 6 months ago by a former Oberheim tech. at Davidson Electronics in NY. Everything, and I mean everything has been looked at, tuned, and calibrated. While it was there I had them install a brand new Encore MIDI system which is the most advanced system available for the OB-Xa. It has the factory sounds permanently installed on flash ROM, which can be accessed via the front panel and loaded in at any time. One of it’s great features… I had it installed on the end wooden end cheek because I didn’t want to them to drill into the metal on the rear panel.. The wood can always and easily be replaced, the metal casing obviously cannot be. Also the keyboard bushings have been replaced so the action feels and responds like new. I had a custom heavy duty dust cover made for it that fits with the cables in so it can be taken off and put back on easily without removing the output/power cables, etc.. This is one of the last vintage synths in my collection to go. I am moving soon and need to free up some $$. It will be professionally packed and double boxed for it’s journey. Pay Pal only. “This OB-XA is in amazing shape, almost museum cosmetics. Fully functional board has been recently gone over by LA tech who handles dozens of analog keyboards per month. Strong battery, voices tune quickly and don’t drift, all functions working properly on the keyboard, keys all trigger properly, keys have smooth action, etc. etc. Midi functions correctly as well. Most importantly, this keyboard sounds amazing, so thick and full… true analog goodness. I’ve compared this keyboard to many virtual synths including the closest virtual models, and I can tell you that on good monitors with good converters, it’s no contest. This thing sounds way bigger and reactive. Only selling bc I finished the project I was using it on.
The MIDI kit is Numera, which is a kit that was predominantly sold overseas (unlike the more common US Encore midi kit). The timing is just as tight, and all midi functions work correctly.” Link

“Hello… This is my Obxa 8 Voice up for grabs. I am the original owner. I have spent the past 5 months having it refurbished by two of the best analog synth techs here in the US, ANALOGICS ANALOG REPAIR AND THESIS AUDIO SERVICES. The following was done… Power supply and leeds all redone/recapped. ALL voices were checked, tuned, calibrated and chips were replaced where needed. Three pots were replaced. New battery installed and factory presets loaded in. The key bed was re-done with new bushings. The key bed is playable and I personally think better then when it was new. I had the technician adjust the action for a much lighter touch. Very easy to play now. That said, the new buyer may elect to adjust the action for personal preference. The Pitch and Mod Levers were calibrated to factory spec. I have spent $1500 to get this baby rock solid. It tunes quick and fine. It sounds amazing. It IS amazing. Two things… The LED for the S/H button is out and during shipping back to me there is a dime size dent on the left bottom back corner of the wood panel. That’s it. Cosmetics on the OBXA are very good, it looks almost new. This is the 120 program version. It does NOT have Midi. Both techs ran scopes and tested ALL areas and fixed everything that needed attention. You will be hard pressed to find another vintage obxa in prime operational condition.” Link

“Up for auction and also being sold local is my Oberheim OB-Xa 8 voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. Everything is here and original, all the voices are working, all the cards are in place, and there are no broken knobs or switches. As can be seen in the photos the unit is in super condition with only the usual scratches here and there. The bottom has a few scratches also from being slid into and out of the triple rack. The keyboard has just had the bushings replaced so the keys are nice and smooth with no clicking or sticking. All the key contacts have also been cleaned and all keys play as they should. This will be expensive to ship so pick up would be the best not only for the cost, but also because vintage synths don’t like being thrown from the back of a truck. Here’s the issue: According to the previous owner, 8 or more VCO’s are bad. Some of the vcf,vca’s also need to be replace. I don’t know if there are other issues that needs to be fix as I never heared it play. I don’t know if the programs are still there. All I know is it does power up. All connections seems to be intact. Internals looks good aside from some dust.
Missing 2 knobs (volume & release), screws on the keyboard assembly is missing (easy to find) so it moves freely. Few side screws are also missing so top lifts up easily. One of the plastic cover on the back of the cooling fin (??) is missing. The keyboard has the usual clackiness but no sticky/lazy keys. J wires are intact. All the springs on the keys are intact (see pix)

Up for bid is the OBERHEIM OB-XA (model 2) w/ Numera Midi Kit & Anvil Flight Case. Stored inside the case since mid 1990′s. Pulled out just last month. Just serviced by my tech David Trouse in Cotati CA. I just picked it up today.After few minutes of warm-up, it tunes right up. Sounds great!
Here’s what was done: $280 total for service repair
*Hardwire Mod Panel Connectors
*Calibrate: Power Supply, Modulation Panel, DAC Scale and all voices (all adjustment)
*Replace 1-3340, 1-vcf, 1-1458, 1-cd4066, clean all pots & switches
*Replace Memory battery & program “A” bank (don’t have cassette)
*All voices tune
*Replaced few key guides, most keys are still “clacky”. Suggest using MIDI or replace all key guides
*Key contacts (JWIRES are in good shape)
It has minor cosmetic scratches/scuffs/dents. Surface scratches on the top panel, mostly on the sides. Scratches on the panel below the keys. Scratches/scuffs on the bottom panel from keyboard stand and used. Finger scratches on the keys. You’ll noticed that the keys are slightly uneven, few higher and lower. They are “clacky” which is typical from used & aged. It’s probably better to used a better midi controller keyboard. The flight case shows cosmetic wear in/out from used and aged. Some rust around the handle but still does its job. Overall, the OB-XA is good cosmetic shape.
My tech only program a few test sounds. He doesn’t have the factory cassette tape to load back in. ” Link
