polymoog “A rare and vintage PolyMoog Keyboard 280A from around 1978.

It features the incredible ‘Vox Humana’ as used by Numan, Foxx and countless other hyperlegends.

It is extremely clean, there’s no dust or grime anywhere.

All keys work, there are no thumps, bumps or crackles.

All presets work as they should and all sliders and controls are fine.

It plays well, the velocity sensitive, weighted keys are all OK.

Due to a little ‘ruggedisation’, it actually transports very well and I’ve never had any problems with moving it around. Carefully.

To make it a more hardcore instrument, it has been stripped, checked and rebuilt to be reliable, all Polycom motherboards checked for the usual dry-joints, Polycom cards and sockets cleaned, keys and contacts cleaned, and the power supply checked, aligned and tested.

All OP-Amps are socketed, all TTL/CMOS are socketed.

All this along with regular servicing and cleaning.

The bad bits: The case has some scratches and marks from forty years of life. No more bad bits.

Don’t be afraid to ask absolutely anything about it, or to make an offer.

Power and 1/4 inch leads supplied if you need them, the full service and operation manuals will be included on disk too!” Link

It all works or I would say 95% of it does and on the odd occasion the odd note won’t on 1 or 2 on one of the presets but they are ok on others and they all worked today when I tried.

All of the LEDs and buttons and functions seem to work as all the sliders do too. I spent over £800 on this a few years ago at Ron Lebars having it all repaired. Its possible could do with a new service cleaning the cards etc and checking over for anything else but as we all know polymoogs so are unreliable so this is sold as it is and as not working just in case anything may happen when it’s moved to the buyers new home. Sometimes little minor things like the odd not work and then they don’t but most of the time most of it works. I will be able to show you.

As I’ve tried it today it all seems to work with the poly pedals that are also working. You are all welcome to try it before you bid or buy it.” Link

polymoog “Polymoog 203a model with 285 controller pedals and legs completely rebuilt by New England Analog in March 2013. Serial number 3040.The rebuild cost $4500 over and above the $2500 I paid for the synth. You can search New England Analog’s website and go to service and photo gallery to see the 80 photos illustrating the rebuild. NEA also installed a custom formant filter circuit ( see photo of board with green connecting wires, you can also see the SMPS in gold )built into the organ patch to simulate the Vox Humana patch. NEA also has a YouTube demo of this you can search. Not perfect but if you set the saw and square wave LFOs at different rates using a narrow pulse wave at 2-15% duty cycle and run through a flanger, you can get it to 90% of the Vox Humana patch sound found on the 280 model.

The NEA rebuild includes the following:

Power supply replaced by SMPS which greatly improved the stability. Switched Mode power supplies incorporate a switching regulator to convert electrical power more efficiently than the original Polymoog PSUs. The SMPS generates almost no heat which is a godsend to the delicate internal circuitry in the Polymoog.
Replaced all switch indicators to blue LEDs.
Rebuilt Pratt Reed keyboard with new bushings and lubrication. Polished busbars.
Repaired and calibrated all velocity sensors.
Repaired faulty VCF envelope generator.
Repaired faulty capacitances in middle D modulator, changed several polycom chips to temper voices between notes
Replaced all polarized capacitors
Replaced all analog opamps, analog switches, multiplexers, and all CA 3080 OTA chips.
Repaired faulty Pass Mode switch on front panel.
Lubricated 285 controller pedals( the pedals alone have sold for upwards of $500
The modifications made by NEA with this rebuild added quite a lot of stability to the unit ” Link

Details:
The Polymoog (model 203a) is a fully polyphonic preset-based synthesizer released in 1975. Its eight preset sounds consist of Strings, Piano, Organ, Harpsichord, Funk, Clavi, Vibes and Brass. There is also a Var (Variation) mode that allows any one of the preset sounds to be fully modified into unique and wild analog sounds using all of the available synthesis parameters on board. There’s a genuine Moog ladder filter inside with modulation, keyboard tracking and lots of LFO modulation sources. The Polymoog features a full 71-key, velocity sensitive Pratt & Read weighted keyboard that can be split into three sections, each with independent volume sliders. There is a 3-band EQ, sample-and-hold, pitch controller ribbon and a full set of envelope controls.

Here are the known issues current with the synthesizer:
– The sawtooth wave does not work on all keys.
In fact, it works on mostly the same notes all the way up the board. As such, not a totally usable oscillator right now.
– A few LEDs are out, common issue with these.
– The 16′ square rank: 1 or 2 notes are noticeably quieter
– There are some scratchy pots present from dust and age.
– Sometimes the outputs have what sounds like the resonator bleeding through, even with nothing playing.
It tends to go away or disappears entirely when switching outputs.
– There is one dead note… I believe the IC is out, so I switch the board all the way up to the highest key, which I don’t usually play.
– The pitch bend works, but probably not like it did a few decades ago.

The filters, resonators, and all controls work. The power supply is stable and the square wave is amazing.
It will take a service tech to and get it back up to 100%. Right now I think it sounds incredible, so that would be your choice.” Link

They are known for things knocking loose and boards having to be reseated after moving.

Does power on and the Red digit shows on the peset selector panel, and below on the buttons section, not all leds come on those that don’t may well be blown or a bad connection, the preset panel led will show numbers 1 and 7 the rest are not showing correctly.

There is a hum sound which is normal from the transformer and the only sound heard is the tones when a preset is activated there are no musical sounds. The synthesiser comes with a full set of chrome legs and fittings, the moog will require looking at by qualified tech to diagnose what is needed to return to full working order, so its sold as seen not working in the condition shown to be used either for parts or to restore.” Link

moog polymoog“Classic Polymoog 280a with Vox Humana.
Fully working 280a which has never given me a moments trouble partly because it had a extensive service/restore by James Walker of Synth Repair and it has been good to go ever since: many of the parts that could go wrong have been replaced with modern parts that will outlive us all.
Serial number 1162 and it has had most of the IC chips socketed for easy removal in the very unlikely event that these new chips will die.(see pics of some of the chip sockets)
Cosmetically it is in good condition: a few scuffs here and there consistent with a synth of this age(1970’s)

Polymoog’s have a bad rep for reliability (mainly thanks to the 203a model) 280a is the more reliable model and this Polymoog has had all the work done needed to make it very reliable. This Polymoog works and will continue to work.
Whoever buys this is going to have years of use from it, but I would have one suggestion to whoever becomes the new owner: never ever gig or move these things around all the time; they are happy in a studio/room were they can sit and not get banged about and with the restore/service this has had it will be golden.

Please note I will not ship this item under any circumstances because they are too delicate to ship. Anyone who understands a Polymoog will know they don’t like getting knocked about. Item is in Preston, Lancashire.
Synth is advertised elsewhere so I reserve the right to pull the auction.
If you have ever wanted a Polymoog 280a that is not going to break yer heart by breaking down all the time, then this is the one.” Link

moogpolymoog “Moog Polymoog 203A
and Poly pedal Controller
(both in perfect condition)

This one is probably the only Polymoog on ebay 😉
It was checked 100% and restored in January 2014 by a specialist who knows very well the beast. He made a fantastic job on it.
All internal adjustable parameters have been tuned and calibrated, many capacitors on the power supply have been replaced with new ones. All the leds are working as well has he pushbuttons on the front panel. No scratchy slider (look like new actually). It took about 3 months to have it back after restoration. The Polypedal Controller is working perfectly and is also in a good cosmetic shape. It come with the user manual and all the complete schematics binder.

It has been serviced with durability in mind. But I can not guarantee this because the Polymoog is a sensitive instrument that needs care.
The chances of a long survival for this one have certainly been improved 😉
The shipping was the main raison I have hesitated to put it on ebay. The Polymoog doesn’t like to be moved.
For exemple, the key cards (one for each key), can be a bit detached during the carriage, and you will have one or two keys (a note) not working.
Not a big deal, you just need to push it back to the slot.” Link

“For sale is a Moog Polymoog that needs a lot of work. Cosmetically, it is in good condition, however the electronics will need work. Our shop has restored Polymoogs and we can say that it is a labor of love. They basically need to be rechipped, recapped, and the power supply must be replaced or rebuilt. This being said, we are happy to restore the unit to full working condition, but that would come at a significantly higher price than that we are asking in this auction. The unit has all of its polycon chips should you want to use it as your backup parts unit to keep a 203a running. What we know is that unless someone is willing to pay us our regular hourly repair rate, we aren’t fixing this one. Our loss is your gain. We have even included a new holographic Moog logo for the cover.” Link

“MOOG POLYMOOG Keyboard Model 280A
complete with stand
UK mainland delivery is included in the price.
Sold as seen, it’s working and plays but does have some faults, (it’s been stored for over 30 years)
There’s no price guide for this kind of machine, my price is based on advice but I will consider offers.
This Moog came along with other unknown equipment I purchased last year when I bought a popular Manchester based music production company that was closing down after many years of trading.
In fact this Polymoog was owned and used on tour and in the studio for album recordings by China Crisis, doubt that would increase any value but it is of interest.
When I plugged it in and connected it up to amp/speakers it all lit up and nearly all the keys played, maybe 3 or 4 were dead and made no sound. I have absolutely no idea what the switches and knobs are supposed to do but playing around with them did seem to alter the sound and that slide bit in the middle had a great Gary Numan style effect which kept me entertained and turning the volume up. Anyway I took it to a non-Moog expert to have a quick a look at it (as my research came up with experts far away in London) and a couple of faults have been fixed but apparantly there’s more faults which will require more expertise or knowledge of parts etc.
Well that is where the experts come into play because there’s a few people who can fix these regardless and virtually guarantee to fix anything with them.” Link

It powers on and the power light comes on and it makes a friends PA system “pop” when it powers up. If you click the grey and white buttons on the synthesizer it makes the PA system “pop” as well.

I could not get it to play music when pressing the keys. I spent at least 15 minutes trying different inputs on the back of the Moog and pressing buttons on the front and couldn’t get it to do anything. Since it powers on and does “speak” to the PA system I hope that is a good sign that it will be an easy fix for someone. Honestly, with my very novice skills there is a chance that I was hooking it up incorrectly (but do not bank on that).” Link

“Hello, this an auction for a Moog Polymoog keyboard (280a) This is rather a unique opportunity own a working Polymoog which is also a production test unit along with it’s design changes made by the original co-creator of the Polymoog (Tony Marcheese) Sadly he passed away last year and this was left at his estate. We have fully restored the Polymoog & found some of Tony’s original handwritten tags inside. I believe this one is somewhat unique & one of a kind because there are engineering changes made (not found in service manuals) by Tony; for further development no doubt. Here’s a list of updates we’ve made from the service sheet:

>> Keyboard cleaned throughout
>> New key bushings installed
>> Keyboard calibrated
>> New LED’s installed close to originals dark red (smaller voltage to help PSU)
>> All new LM358N chips installed
>> All main components replaced & calibrated / tested
>> Motherboards and PCB’s professionally cleaned
>> New old stock Pitch Controller installed (like new!) We will include the old one too for the collector!
>> Moog internal PSU rebuilt and calibrated / tested – will last you for a few years yet!
>> All control panels were taken apart & cleaned professionally with compressed air and re-greased for protection

All tests were made with another working Polymoog 280a to verify all component’s working on this machine. You will never see another like this and we’re very reluctant to sell. The outputs sound rather beautiful.” Link

“The auction is for a vintage Moog Polymoog Keyboard. Models 203a. Lter known as the polymoog synthesizer. It is the more desirable, more programmable Polymoog. It needs some work. It powers on and plays. All but 4 keys work. Though a few keys are still a little touchy. The voices all work. But there is an issue. When first powered up. All voices. In both part/full work well. After 5 to 10 minutes of warm up. Only the voices when switched to “part” work. This seems to be a power supply issue. Or a cap problem. As once the piece warms up. One part goes out of spec. There are a few cracks in the lower chassis. Overall this is a piece that works pretty well for not having been serviced in, who knows how long. This Moog was found with a large lot of Moog gear. Which I will be listing as I go through it. If you are a fan of Moog gear from this era. You should check my auctions in the future. I have some cool and rare stuff. Check the pics for more info. ” Link
