“Fully-functional Poly-800, second owner, includes original manual and original box. This unit has the Moog-Slayer mod professionally installed by Alien-Devices.com. It was gently used smoke-free at home. I do not have a power-supply, but it runs on batteries and has strap pegs to be worn as a keytar. Nothing missing; nothing broken. Has minor signs of wear appropriate to a vintage keyboard: scrapes/scuffs on bottom from stands, and a few minor scratches around the edges.” Link

Link

“This is the tabletop/rackmount version of the Poly 800 -an eight voice DCO synth with an analog filter. It has been modified by Diabolical Devices to include dedicated knobs for filter cutoff and resonance. You also have a 1/4″ jack for processing external instruments through the filter. The unit is in perfect condition. ” Link

“Here is a Korg Poly 800 with several mods: -An internal battery has been added – Cut Off and Resonance controls (Moog Slayer mod) – Switch for 2 pole or 4 pole filter – Noise amount control – FM control for the filter, source switchable between noise or DCO 1 So it sounds and works great. Cosmetically it is not great. There is a some fading of the text, though it is still legible. The keys are also quite dirty, it looks like someone tried to clean the keys with something too strong for the job! Comes with power supply Thanks for looking ” Link

“Custom white Korg Poly 800 with Moog Slayer Mod.

This synth has a new battery installed, and needs the original patches restored. I programmed the first 3 patches but it will be up to the auction winner to restore the remaining patches on the synth. Patch cassettes are readily available on eBay, just do a search!” Link

“Korg Poly-800 w/ Moog Slayer, Filter FM, memory battery mods plus BSIAB 2

The short version: Korg Poly-800, early version, added: Moog Slayer, Filter Freqency Modulation, selectable 12/24 db filter, memory battery mods. Dead chorus led to grafting in a BSIAB II pcb for overdrive (turned on and off by Chorus parameter). Power section shot, so it was rebuilt (new caps, new power transistor). Thorough cleaning. Missing knob cap replaced. See video/pictures below. You’ll love it!

The long version: I bought this Korg Poly-800 at a yard sale. It was clearly neglected, probably spending years in a basement or garage, and needed a lot of work. So, the case got an actual bath with soap in a tub of water, the keybed was cleaned, and problems were found and all fixed! The joystick knob was missing, too, and I made a replacement for that.

The power section was shot: someone put the wrong polarity adapter in there (this requires tip negative, 9v, “Boss style” barrel adapter). So, that section was rebuilt, including the first power transistor which is difficult to source these days.

I put in the Moog Slayer, Filter Frequency Modulation, and selectable filter slope (12/24 db) mods. These are very nice and really eek out a lot of character from the custom Korg filter IC in the Poly 800.

A 3v, coin cell memory backup battery was installed. This is an early version with no location on the PCB for a memory battery – Korg for some reason assumed using the D-cell batteries was okay for that task – so I put one in and mounted it off to the side. No more worries about losing programs or D-cell battery leaks.

The chorus section was dead and with one of the nearly impossible to find, and if you do it’s really expensive, BBD controller ICs dead, I decided to graft a Brown Sound in a Box II pcb I had lying around. You can turn it on and off with the chorus parameter in the synth’s programming section, and control the sound with the knobs. I had to voice it for the synth, though, so it’s not incredibly thick like you might be used to with a guitar, but it does a really nice job. There are some trim pots on that circuit if you want to adjust the tone.

I did not load up a back of patches, you can do that yourself (I hadn’t need more than a few thanks to the mods) – there are several available just Google them. I think with the added controls, the voice banks available really may not be ideal anyway, but that’s your call. They would make a good place to start from I suppose. So, be advised that only programs 11-16 have anything in them; the rest will not sound or will sound funky until you save a patch to them or load up the voice banks. That’s the nature of the machine since the memory gets wiped whenever you took out the D-cell batteries – again, you won’t have to worry about that now!

Everything works great! Some of the buttons got new foam padding so they press nice; all the keys fire great; the volume pot was cleaned (a little – the more it’s used the more it cleans itself – hence: self-cleaning, sealed pots). Nice, strong output” Link

“Great classic Synth from a super clean studio here in HOllywood. I’m not a keyboard expert but here;’s what i know: This has had 2 of the well known modifications that these units have. One is called the Moog-Slayer and the other i think is FM filter or something like that. You can see the extra knobs in the pictures at the upper left and right of the unit. It works great except that the original battery is gone and it does not, i’m told have the “battery holder” mod which allows you to change them easily. When i started to play the thing i saw that there was only one sound in it and my friend said that that was because the battery died and the sounds are not retained. So i bought another battery online and opened it up hoping to replace it but i could not find where the new one was supposed to go. If you guys are into old synths and mods and all that I;m sure that this is business as usual for you. You just need to put in the new battery and then reload the original sounds which are easily gooten off the internet. So-it comes with the adaptor, the manual, the new battery and it is very very clean and as i said already twice moddded. See pics ask questions but as i said this is what i know! great vintage piece.” Link

“Up for auction is a Korg Poly 800 with Moog Slayer and Internal Battery Mods. A tech performed these mods for me several years back. The first mod is the Moog Slayer Mod which adds an external knob for resonance and for the cutoff filter. The resonance gets quite loud when the knob is maxed out — I am not responsible for any speaker or hearing damage The second mod was adding an internal coin cell battery holder to the main PCB which holds patch data after the synth is turned off. I recently put a new battery in so it should be good for quite some time.

Comes with original AC adapter. All keys and buttons work — the volume knob is a little scratchy, but other than that, this synth is in nice shape. Comes from a smoke-free environment. Picture is of actual item for sale. All sales final, no returns will be accepted. I have an older foam lined wooden case that I will ship the synth in to help keep it from getting damaged during transit — this adds to the weight and increase in shipping cost. Due to the weight of this item, I am unable to ship overseas” Link

“Korg Poly 800 synth
This is one of the “less common” (i hate the overused rare on ebay) reverse key models
Comes with manual and factory sounds tape!
It has had the Frequency and Resonance cut off mods done on the right hand side (previous owner)
Unit works great and sounds excellent
The memory battery was replaced a few years back so there is no leaking battery cancer on the voice board
It is missing one of the strap buttons (c’mon you weren’t really going to play this like a keytar?!!)” Link

“This listing is for a Korg EX-800 synthesizer w/ Slayer mod. The unit is 100% functional and is in nice cosmetic condition as well. ” Link

“One of the last reasonably priced analog polys is the Korg EX800. It’s a synth module version of Korg’s Poly 800.

This EX800 is special as it has the vaunted “Moog Slayer” mod that you can see in many Youtube videos. Basically it gives full pot control over the cuttoff and resonance of the VCF breaking it out of the chains of programming its parameter control through a tedious menu selection. This mod really gives meat and punch to the leads, basses and sequences that you create.

The third knob of the mods is a control that allows you to FM the VCF with the output of DCO2. This can result in crazy sounds. Especially when using the numeric parameter control of DCO2.

Also wanted to mention that unlike some modded poly/ex 800s this one DOES NOT have an external input jack mod that some do although it would be easy enough to do and there is plenty of room in the back.

This EX800 is in perfect working condition and only has a few small scratches but is by no means beat up. New battery. Everything loads and saves fine. Some awesome programs in this one. Comes with power adaptor.” Link

“Modified Korg Poly 800 by Diabolical Devices with custom paint job. The poly 800 is a great sounding synthesizer with an analog VCF/ Filter. This synthesizer now has several modification installed that majorly expand the capabilities of the filter.

Modification include:
Moog/Slayer mods- adds hard wired controls for VCF cutoff and resonance.
VCF Audio input with level control-Allows you to process external audio through VCF, VCA and Chorus.
VCF CV input- Controls VCF cutoff with external CV source.

In addition to custom paint we have added blue 7-segment displays and installed an internal memory battery for storing patch data. Originally C batteries needed to be kept in synthesizer in order to save patches.
Synthesizer mods and paint turned out great however a few of the tact switches are a little hard to trigger. This is fairly common on the poly 800 and is due to it’s age. ” Link

“Poly 800 with Moog Slayer mod installed. Keyboard has factory patches installed and the mod gives wide control over these patches. Keyboard has a couple of issues. The left stereo output is weak to the point of being unusable and this effects the left side of the headphone jack. The right side works fine. The F# key is not as responsive as the other keys. It works but you have to hit it a little harder. Otherwise everything works as normal. Thanks! ” Link

“Vends KORG POLY-800

Link

“I must say i have owned a few poly 800′s in my time and was not to impressed with the rather thin a weedy sounds they produce. I was reading on the web that the chipset used inside these things found there way into all sorts of things including games machines for their sounds and effects!!. This one on the otherhand has a filter mod which completely messes things up and could split your eardrum if your not careful! To get some idea of what the moog slayer mod realy is then take a look at this link :- http://www.synthmod.net/korg/moog_slayer/ this should give you some idea of what all the fuss is about. I originaly bought this synth on ebay not working and as i am an engineer in the field of electronics i managed to bring it back to life and actualy used it in a couple of my tracks. I don’t realy have alot of time for music now as i am working on other projects so i have decided to sell. If you are reading this ad then i guess you know what this keyboard is all about but if you don’t then, it’s probably best i don’t babble on and you can go check it out on the web, Just google POLY800 and you will find lots of info there. The synth does have a few knocks and marks around the case and also has wear mark around the volume control(as you can see in the photo). The case also has two holes drilled on the side which are drilled tidy (and must of been from a previous mod). Still has the modulator cap on joystick, display is clean, on whole i have seen alot worse!!. Battery bay is clean, shows no sign of battery leakage. I can put a manual on cdrom no problem. No psu, (although these can be purchased for a couple of quid on ebay). I also replaced the backup battery inside this unit as the other was reading 1.32v unloaded so no problems there. On the whole, with the mod an excellent sounding synth which is much more of an improvement on the original. ” Link

“I’m really going to miss this keyboard!

This is a Korg Poly-800 analog synthesizer, which has been heavily modified by me with many different mods. The amount of sounds you can achieve at your fingertips with this synth is unimaginable. The first mods that were performed were the famous “Moog slayer” mod, which brings the cutoff and resonance pots out for manual use, with a knob added for each. NO MORE MENU DIVING! The filter mod was also done, so you also have a switchable 24/12db filter. I then began to experiment and added a FM amount knob, a chorus modulation knob, a noise control, and also a chorus distortion knob. Audio in was my last project, as was servicing the joystick and getting that working up to par. Everything is in perfect working order and it is loaded with custom patches, which I have also added an internal battery mod to store the patch data. You can strap this baby on with a guitar strap and pretend the year is 1986 all over again! What I like is the versatility. Not only do you get sweet analog strings and pads, but you can obtain some harsh digital effects, great for noise and experimental music! A lot of of time and effort that went into these mods; it’s almost as if I’m losing a friend, lol. I spent a lot of time inside and out of this synth, and it was a blast to mod and play.

I absolutely love the sound of this synth and it holds up still today. It is very comparable to the Roland Juno series.

Some info from vintagesynth.com:

http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/poly800.php

BE WARNED! The Moog Slayer mod CAN kill your speakers if the resonance patch data exceeds a value of 10-11. This is documented in the mod’s DIY site. Don’t blame me if you blow out your favorite amp (or your eardrums for that matter)! Also, this is an AS-IS auction. While there is no long term guarantee, I can guarantee it to NOT be DOA. Everything is working A-OK. There are some blemishes in the paint job and it’s not the cleanest poly-800, but it is in great shape for being as old as it is! I will also include a power supply with the keyboard as well.” Link

“THIS POLY-800 IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT, THE FILTER MODIFICATION AND MOOG SLAYER TAKE OUT AN INCREDIBLE SOUND. THIS HAS ANALOG FILTERS WITH DCO (DIGITALLY CONTROLED OSCILLATORS) THIS SYNTH IS GREAT FOR PADS, FAT BASS AND VINTAGE SOUNDS.
I SELL IT BECAUSE I BOUGHT A KORG MONOPOLY” Link

Circuit bending adds an additional cutoff effect and another LFO creating some really wacky effects.” Link

p800 moogslayer “This auction id for a Korg Poly-800 modded performance synthesizer. It’s modifications are as following. Two rotary control knobs have been added to the top right side of the control panel (see photos). Basically they control the cutoff and resonance filters. This extends the range of sounds that the Poly-800 will make, which is very useful for creating unique sounds (in the studio). But perhaps the best use of these features is as a performance keyboard. There has also been the addition of a “ring” on the side of the keyboard so that the unit can be worn in the style of a keytar. The rotary knobs allow for very easy manipulation of the sound that is great for live performance. You can bend and twist sounds at your will to match the piece that you are playing along with in real time. The keyboard is in basic good cosmetic condition (especially for it’s age), it does have some minor scratches and there is some discoloration around some of the controls (from use). All the lettering is still fine but the discoloration is into the finish of the case itself. Two of the keys have a couple chips under neath, as shown in a picture.

It is accompanied by a PDF manual and a power supply.” Link

moogslayer “Good overall condition, paint has worn away around the power/volume dial and a couple of superficial marks here and there but nothing sinister. Moog Slayer mod is fitted as mentioned in the title, sorry no PSU.” Link

800_1 “This is a modded Korg poly 800 . Cosmetically it has a little wear and tear as you can see in the picture. I have replaced the internal battery that keeps the memory for the patches with a replaceable battery type holder .
The mods are;
moog slayer mod – filter cut off and resonance knobs (both high quality pots and knobs used)
FM mod – Frequency modulation knob
12/24db filter switch mod

Original patches have been reloaded into the poly 800 .
Does not include adapter ,though takes a standard 9v adapter and also can run off batterys.
The mods are fun and add much more sound creating possibility . ” Link

EX 800, Korg, Moog Slayer @ 26 September 2009, “No Comments”

ex800moogslayer “Up for sale is a vintage Korg EX-800 Programmable Polyphonic Synthe Module. This is essentially the rackmount version of the Poly-800. I have modified this synth with added control knobs for Filter Cutoff and Resonance (known as the Moog Slayer Filter Mod) as well as a knob to modulate the filter’s frequency via DCO 1 (known as the FM-800 Mod). This unit is in very good working condition. The filter mod sounds amazing and makes the unit capable of some serious speaker-blowing bass. The WRITE button needs to be pressed/tapped hard to register, but still functions. Number keys are a bit sensitive, but work just fine. Some blemishes & discoloration here and there, but nothing major. I have recently replaced the internal battery, so most of the patch bank is blank except for a few that I have programmed and saved since replacing battery. The new battery should be good for a few years. I do not have the rack ears or manual for this synth. I will include a compatible Radio Shack power supply.” Link

korgpoly800 “Modified Korg Poly 800 synthesizer:
This item is a great working condition Korg Poly 800 synthesizer professionally modified by Class A Electronics, LLC/Diabolical Devices. This is a cool synthesizer because the VCF (filter) is actually analog. These have a great 80′s/Video Game sound. We have added the popular “Moog Slayer” mods which adds hard wired controls for VCF Cutoff and Reso. We have also added a VCF audio input with level control and Blue 7-segment displays.
This synthesizer originally retained patch data using D cell batteries that go into the back. We have added a lithium battery to the mother board, the D cells will still power the keyboard if desired (no batteries included). Right now there are only the patches I created to test new battery and mods. There are some great 3rd party editors for this keyboard that allow you to create patches on your computer. There are a couple of discolored spots on the case (see pics) otherwise it’s in great physical condition.” Link

moogslayer1 “This is a Korg Poly 800 keyboard in perfect working order. I had a professional install the Moog Slayer Modification to get rotary knobs for the Cutoff and Resonance. The cutoff doesn’t seem to do much, but the resonance knob is cool. It works kind of like a bass/treble knob on a guitar. This keyboard also comes with a like new flight case. I’ve never even used the case. This is an awesome keyboard, but I have too many synthesizers right now, and I’m trying to cut back on my addiction.” Link moogslayer2

“The Synth has 1 broken key. If you doin’t mind haviong a white one these are readily available on ebay.co.uk/.com, a black one might be harder to come across. Otherwise ok , A few scratches here and there but nothing serious.
Item ships with replacement PSU.” Link

“If you are looking at this, you probably alread know about this, there is a whole Yahoo newsgroup dedicated to modding these babies. I had a friend try to do this for me, but it never worked right. It sounds really crazy and bad, not like the mod is supposed to. I have no clue what the problem is. Keyboard powers up and FM mod seems to work to inject wild noise into the sound. Please only buy this if you know how to fix it or are going to use it for parts. I am not sure if something went wrong in the install. All the parts for the mod and the same as described on the original website.” Link

“I picked this keyboard up with the intention of using the rubber key contacts out of it to repair my Poly Six, since 800′s use the same key contacts as the Poly 6 and Mono/Poly. After doing some research on the internet and finding the Moog Slayer Mod directions, I decided to give it a try instead of sacrificing it. I found a potentiometer with a smooth even taper for the cut-off control. The other control is resonance. Some people call this the “tweeter eater” mod. It will fry speakers, or your ear drums, if you crank up the resonance up to 10 on certain settings with high volume. I would suggest keeping the resonance at about 8, until you get a feel for it. The keyboard is in good working condition. However, I replaced the memory battery and lost the factory presets. Most of the presets on here now sound more like helicopters (which is typical when you loose the factory sounds). I have created of few sounds and saved them as presets, so the new battery is working. I don’t have the original tape to load the factory presets, nor do I have the manual. It does come with a nice soft case that fits it perfectly. These also can be run with 6 C-cell batteries (included). It has guitar strap pins so that you can play it like a keytar on stage. Poly 800′s have analog oscillators that are controlled digitally, meaning analog sound with the programming capabilities of digital. “ Link

“Hi there. I am selling a Korg Poly 800 Mark 1 synthesiser with the Moog Slayer filter and resonance modification. It is the rare reverse keys version, which looks a bit cooler than the normal version.

I’m selling this because I’m a student, and I’m running out of space and money. I’m going to sell some gear, then maybe replace it when I’m a millionaire.

The Moog slayer mod does 2 cool things. It provides 2 nobs for control of filter cutoff and resonance, so you can tweak on the fly rather than mess around with buttons.

The other thing it does is increase the range of the resonance, taking it to ear-bleeding levels of self oscillation. You have to hear it to believe it – it’s terrifying.

It is not in perfect cosmetic condition, as I’ve always been more concerned with how it sounds. The biggest problem is that an E key is damaged. It’s still playable, but rather tricky. Also, the bending joystick has no cover, but this does not affect functionality. I have removed the covers for the moog slayer pots as I am replacing them. More photos this week.

The synth will come with the original PSU and some batteries, which are necessary for patch storage.” Link

Atom Smasher’s site on how to perform the Moog Slayer Mod on a Poly or EX 800 synth. Heed the warning on the page: “This thing can make dangerous sounds, like the speaker-blowing (and ear-blowing!) sounds of old modular synths. It’s really sick…. In addition to the usual disclaimers (if you break it, it’s your problem, not mine!), I’d like to also point out that I will not be responsible for blown speakers, amps & ear-drums.”

Lots of pics following the links.
