Technisch – defekt!

Link

“Completely rare and a truly analog synthesizer – all under digital control of course.

I’ve lost the power supply for this unit but the last time I plugged it in the unit booted – I just couldn’t get a sound out of it.

It’s a bit beaten up – more images available on request.

It will need repair by someone who knows what they are doing.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

“Hello all, here is a rare Marion MSR-2 rack synth which currently produces no sound. The screen is bright and clear and all the buttons and knobs work but I cannot seem to get any sound out of it when I hook a MIDI keyboard up.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.

marion2 “This is a listing for a very rare Marion MSR-2 analog synthesizer. It’s one of my most prized instruments, but I am simplifying my setup, so I am offering to the world hoping it will find its way into good hands! The MSR-2 sounds like no other synth I’ve every played — it has a silky, deep, complex sound that is very unlike most popular analog synths of the 1970s and 1980s. The Marion is no Moog, Prophet or Jupiter clone — it has its own sound and it begs to be programmed.

Tom Oberheim (of Oberheim synthesizer fame) founded Marion Systems in the early 1990s to develop a mainframe modular synthesizer that was planned to accomodate different synthesis technologies as plug-in boards. The MSR-2 chassis, which is 1U rackmountable, supports 2 plug-in boards. The subtractive analog ASM was the only plug-in board ever offered for the MSR-2 — it offers 8 voices (16 HROs) of analog synthesis using Oberheim’s new DCO-based HRO (High Resolution Oscillator) technology with continuous waveshaping to create waveforms that bridge the gap between the usual saw/square offerings. A derivative of this CEM chip-based HRO design lives on today in Dave Smith’s Evolver and other DSI instruments.

A slightly less expensive version of the MSR-2 was sold as the Pro Synth which included a single ASM board but I don’t believe the Pro Synth was expandable like the MSR-2. Like most MSR-2s, this unit has one 8-voice ASM board, so it has room for another ASM board in the 1U chassis if you can track one down. If two ASM boards are installed, they can be used as one 16-voice (32 HRO) synthesizer, or they can be layered.

The best features of the MSR-2 are the filter section with very powerful FM capabilities and the deep modulation routings offered — not surprisingly, they are very similar to the modulation capabilities of Oberheim’s Matrix 6 and Matrix 12 synthesizers which preceded the Marion. Also, even though the unit only has a few knobs, it is very easy to program even with complicated patches. The MSR-2 operating system is very similar to that of E-mu’s Proteus line — very logical.

I have only used this synth in my smoke-free, pet-free home studio — no roading and no abuse. This MSR-2 is in very good condition with one notable cosmetic issue: the previous (first) owner somehow bent the very back right side of the metal chassis where it extends beyond the external power supply input. It’s only visible from the rear and it doesn’t affect functionality at all — it’s just a bent metal flange/corner on the chassis. Please see the high resolution pictures for details. The faceplate, buttons and screen all work fine and the synth is fully functional. Note that the Marion power supply is a large, heavy brick with a DIN connector that’s very similar to a MIDI connector, so you need to have room to put it next to or on top of the unit so it doesn’t pull itself out. This auction also includes the original bound owner’s manual.

Note: A few years back, I replaced the MSR-2′s internal battery that provides patch backup when the unit is powered down (if I remember correctly, it’s the common CR2032 variety) and I reloaded the factory and custom packages from backup using SoundDiver.” Auction ended. “last revs with the faster env
sounds great and crisp. capable of very edgy or smooth sounds..
installed new battery for program saves.

it has only 1 output per module installed , the basic system here has one loud clear mono out.

** the synth needs to be calibrated after its off for a long time – ie in the morning when you start working, by going to system menu and calibrating osc, filter, env (all calibration) as analog synths need, pretty straight forward. takes 10 secs software controlled , you can even hear it tune up by pressing another button. i guess its like when they say you have to wait an hour after start up with some analogs to get it perfect, this since its newer technology just needs a button press.

very easy to edit parameters not hard its easy to program once you understand osc, filter/filter env, amp env , modulation, its High resolution osc sound great also theres alot of room to boost the signal from within the program structure as most factory programs have not taken advantage of full envelope mix. the patches i personally made make me want to keep this as it proves to be usefull. dedicated knob for parameter choice and parameter value. sounds heavy and clear.

pic is stock mine has a bit of paint chip on rack ears from mounting, face, top bottom sides clean..

10 sources 33 destinations.sound is clear no bkground noise/hum, envelopes are snappy. lcd is bright and like new.

latest rev 1.13, and another thing says 1.09
8 voice expandable to 16.
expect payment in 3 days, please.

will be packed with care.

garunteed no doa.” Auction ended. Click here to browse on eBay.
