Jupiter 8, Roland @ 05 February 2012, “No Comments”

“Up for bid is my “vintage” Roland Jupiter-8 JP-8 analog synthesizer in excellent condition. Works perfectly. EVERYTHING WORKS 100%.This item is my personal collection. Well taken care of and love. It’s serial# 131151 making it a 12 bit model. This is the original JP-8 and looks much better than the later 14 bit model. My JP-8 always stays in tune. No tuning/drifting issues at all. STAYS IN TUNE ALL THE TIME! It was service about 2 years ago and only played lightly over the years. Always stayed in my smoke free bedroom studio and always covered when not in used. I only play with it once a month just to warm it up and exersice all the keys and controls.

This JP-8 is in beautiful condition. I’ve watched and seen many other Jupiter 8 on Ebay and I can honestly say that mine is one of the nicest & cleanest around. I’ll say 9/10 cosmetic condition. There are only a few small minor marks/scratches/small dings. I know that buyers for this item is very specific so I’ve taken close up pictures of the cosmetic blemishes and you can see it on pix#17,18,19,20,21,22. It’s missing the carpet cover under the 5 switches on #17. You can see the scratches/marks on pix 18 to 23. The “O” on the Roland label on the back has a minor scratch. All these are very minor that just can’t be avoided. It’s hard to imagine that this item is almost 30 years old! The front panel, silk screening looks great! All the controls, sliders, knobs, keys, audio works 100%. I will have my tech go through it again this weeK.

Includes 2 covers made by keywear & kaces + copy of manual (not pictured)” Link

“My Jupiter 8 is serial #433308 late model. No dents, No digs, No noticeable Scratches on the body, Near Perfect Condition for a keyboard this old. With 14-bit, better tuning, bigger LCD, and DCB port makes this a must have Jupiter 8. The history of the Jupiter 8 in regarding the different versions is. Starting at serial #171700 the D/A converter on the Interface board was changed from 12-bit to 14-bit. This change was made mainly to improve tuning stability. The problem with the 12-bit digital-to-analog converter on the original JP-8 is that it could cause the autotune to be inaccurate in some instances. Starting at serial #242750 the LEDs of the display were changed to brighter ones. Starting at serial #282880 the JP-8 came standard with a DCB port. These newer JP-8′s may be referred to as JP-8A’s. DCB, or Digital Control Bus, was Roland’s pre-MIDI interface that allowed the JP-8 to talk to other DCB enabled hardware, such as the Roland MC4 and MC8 microcomposers. I purchased my Jupiter 8 new and I am the original owner. Almost all of its life has been in storage as I have not had the time to play this truly beautiful king of All Analog Synths. I am hoping that someone will maximum the potential of this Magical Instrument and create a hit song, or track. I just hope if I ever decide to purchase another one in the future that it will be in this conditioned which is babied all of its life. I would say that this Jupiter 8 has been played only 2% out of 100% of time since I purchased it NEW. With the late model and low operation, exceptional cosmetic condition you cannot go wrong on this baby. This keyboard comes with a Grove Pak gig bag.” Link

“Roland Jupiter 8 with midi by groove electronics.

If you are looking at this then you should know what it is and what it’s capable of ,as well as being a classic piece of musical history,

if you need info then type in Roland uk, then type in jupiter 8 there is loads of information on the web.

I aquired this jupiter 8 from Pinewood studios in 2009 (yes where they make the james bond films) I could not believe the condition when I saw it,

Some scratches on the back over the roland name, and a small scratch on the right hand end plate.

But this did not put me off as all the sliders, nobs, etc, are solid and graphics like new.

I believe it has been used on various film & tv projects, (obviously) so yes it has a very interesting history behind it.

The original manual is still with it which is very rare, and also the manual for the midi set up.

The original dust cover is still with it but is torn at one end, I still use it, just put a bit of gaffer tape on it.

I love the jupiter, now I have used it on my own projects and they are completed, it’s time to find it another good home.

I can show the buyer proof it came from pinewood when they collect.” Link

“Up for the auction is Roland flagship analog polyphonic synthesizer JUPITER-8,beside the perfect working condition,it just got professionally serviced and fully overhaul by my tech, interior has been disassembled and cleaned,YOU’RE NOT GONNA FIND A BETTER JP-8 THAN THIS !!

This one is also a very late one or one of the last made by Roland, later than any other JP-8 i have seen,so it was probably made towards the end of its run in 1984.

The later one got all the upgraded so made it the most reliable and most desirable one for working musician or collector, here’s the info from net:
“Throughout the production of the JP-8 there were several changes. Some say to avoid these early JP-8′s while others say they haven’t experienced tuning problems. Previous JP-8′s had the option of having the OC-8 retrofit installed to give it DCB capability.”" Link

INCLUDES HARD SILVER COLOURED FLIGHT CASE

Here is my beloved Jupiter 8. Please note: THIS IS A SECOND JUPITER 8 I HAVE LISTED IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. This is not strange. I sold my first Jupiter 8 14bit without dcb last week to a nice chap in the Netherlands and that all went fine and it has been sent using G WIZZ Courier Services to him. This one which I am advertising now is my second Jupiter 8. It is 14bit and DOES have dcb. This is a 220v UK/European version which DOES work with UK/European electricity voltage.” Link

“Up for sale is my Roland jupiter 8, love this synth..but winter is coming fast and my boiler in my home needs to be replaced. 12 bit model, 5th serial number, Encore midi installed. This unit is in good condition for its age, however is being sold as is due to age. I would recommend it be checked out by a synth tech to get back up to 100% again. That said, The battery is currently dead, so it does not save patch information once the unit is unplugged. The 5th voice will sometimes play a half step out of tune, this usually goes away once its warmed up for a while. There are a few scratches on it, and a number scratched into the case under the mod wheel.” Link

“Up for auction is my Roland Jupiter 8. It’s the 12 bit version. Excellent + condition, near mint. Very well taken care of. Perfect working order. Has the encore midi kit installed. Sale includes a new Rodie hard case. I will pack this thing with bubble wrap inside the case and out, and put the whole thing inside another box with peanuts. ” Link

“I have owned and number of synths over the years and have had this one for 20. it has been (as you can see) well taken care of and serviced regularly. it is the 14 bit version and everything works perfectly, and is about a “9″ cosmetically. I will include the original manual. ” Link

“The Jupiter 8 was Roland’s first truly professional analog synthesizer. The Jupiter 8 features 16 rich analog oscillators at 2 per voice, eight voice polyphony, with sliders and pots everywhere for ease of programming. With eight voices, you will enjoy the renowned analog sounds. The legacy of the mighty Jupiter 8 is in result of its unique voice architecture and design, with deep resilient filters to produce its trademark sound. With the exception of the mighty Oberheim OBXa, and the SCI Prophet 8, my personal opinion is there is no other synth in the world that does analogue better. This keyboard is a phenomenal feat of engineering and art.

I’ve owned several vintage synths, and the Jupiter 8 was the biggest and fattest of them all ( at least in the Jupiter and Juno series)! It allows you to split and layer the keyboard – eight voices for cross-modulation, oscillator sync, a great LFO and a classic arpeggiator. There’s also two killer resonant analog 24dB/oct filters with 2-pole and 4-pole settings as well as low- and high-pass filtering methods. Although it wasn’t originally included, mine has Midi installed ( see pics ). Patch presets can store keyboard splits, arpeggiator settings, voice assign mode, hold, portamento and modulation settings.

This keyboard is fully functional, with minor scratches and couple of dings expected of a synth of this age. Overall I would rate it an 8.5 – 9 out of 10, with 10 being flawless. This keyboard is in exceptional condition, both inside and out. If you want a piece of history, if you want to separate yourself from the pack, this is your solution.” Link

“This Roland Jupiter 8 Professional Analog Synthesizer is used and in great working condition. There are very minor signs of wear considering it’s from the early 1980′s (see PHOTOS). There is one missing slider knob on the HPF Channel (See Photo), which can easily be replaced. ” Link

“This listing is for a Roland Jupiter 8 vintage analog synthesizer. The unit is 100% functional and aside from a slight pitting of the paint on certain areas of the front panel (which are really not noticeable) it is in nice cosmetic condition as well. It will come as shown below in the pics so take a peek. This piece has been tested and is guaranteed to be in proper working order or your money back! ” Link

“Roland Jupiter 8

Near mint cosmetic condition. Looks every bit as good as the Roland Jupiter 8 that sold for $8160 just one week ago. A few (6) of the keys are just slightly yellower than the rest, but it is hardly noticeable.

Poor functional condition. This Roland Jupiter 8 has issues and definitely needs a tech. It turns on just fine, the LEDs light up, and it plays, but it won’t play more than one or two presets, and it doesn’t play well: often it will interject a portamento-type sound out of nowhere, overlaying the sound of it above the regular preset; sometimes it will play only that portamento sound when the piano keys are depressed; some of the buttons can be non-responsive and many of the presets buttons only yield the portamento sound aforementioned, some other presets currently sound noisy. I don’t want to further test of what is wrong with it, so I am selling it as-is, no returns.

Sold as-is, no returns.” Link

“Thank you for looking at my auction. Your bidding on the Roland Jupiter 8 Vintage Synth (JP-8), Roland’s first truly professional analog synthesizer. Keyboard. Yes looking great and working great; this synth is in excellent condition. All buttons, lights and functions working 100%. ” Link

“This is the Roland JP8 analogue synth, which I’m selling for pickup in Manhattan. If you’re reading this, you know this keyboard, so I won’t hype it.I’m not a musician, or barely one. I tend to sit with this and just create sounds. An hour later, I’m still there, rapt, creating and hearing.

This is the 12-bit edition, serial number 050240, and would need a midi kit installed (see ebay) if you want to hook it directly to one of those newfashioned digital personal computer things.

It plays, sounds beautiful to me, and as far as I am able to understand, everything works as it should.

Sometimes you’ll shop for used electronics, and the guy will say “I have not tested this” (which ALWAYS means “it’s broken but I don’t want to talk about it”). In this case, I HAVE tested it–I use it!–but the thing is, I don’t have the musical or technical depth about the device to let me test its every function. I see that it still remembers patches that were created in our studio in the 80′s (patches by a guy who worked with Gershon Kingsley, who’s the guy who wrote “Popcorn,” LOL), so it hasn’t even lost its battery memory. I see that every button and dial and slider does have its effect on the sound. And I see that every key works smoothly, and that it sounds beautiful and crazy.

But for instance do I know if it does “Tape Memory Dump/Verify/Load” as it should? I don’t know how to even test that. All I know is that all the sounds respond, and the more obvious (to me) functions like pitch bends and arpeggios and pulse width modulations and waveform modulations and on and on, all those do work just beautifully. A waveform setting marked “Noise,” just imagine.

But I also know that the Jupiter 8′s a mighty complex instrument, and it’s not young. Hence I have to state that I’m selling this as old electronics always must be sold, As-Is. If you’re a record producer buying it for a studio, you already understand that you’re going to want to have a tech go over it, first thing, and make sure its capacitors are OK and pots clean and that it’ll hold up for the years you are going to use it.

It was manufactured as a 220V machine, and the studio I used to work at just hardwired a 110V stepup transformer right into the end of the power cord, so that it works fine in our electrical world.

The lettering is sharp and complete, and there is only general light wear. There are a few, only a few, cosmetic issues:

–There’s a little ding in the case, under the words JUPITER-8. I’ve tried to show that in the 5th photo below.

–One of the slider knobs (the tiny square black ones) is missing, and I will point you to the guy on ebay who will sell you that knob for about $10. (If this amazing keyboard turns out to be unsaleable because of this missing slider knob, then I will by christ go buy one and put it on myself.)

–And I believe I see that the pitch bend lever once had a partial crack in it, which was repaired. You can see a little excess glue in that spot. The lever feels strong and certainly works fine.

I apologize for the non-technical and non-musical nature of this posting; I’m not a musician, as you can tell. ” Link

” ********** ROLAND JUPITER 8 W/ ROAD-CASE **************

This is a Roland Jupiter 8 that is NOT IN FULLY FUNCTIONAL ORDER!!!!!

Cosmetically it is in good condition, however, THIS KEYBOARD NEEDS REPAIR!!!!

This keyboard is a Roland Jupiter 8. IT will turn on, light up and load. However it does not work properly, It over heats, and then it resets itself.
all the faders and knobs buttons and jacks. are still original. they all work. The keyboard Seems to be stuck in some type of test mode. When Turned on, All LEDs and
red lights will load and run, and then it will run noise/sound (depending where your knobs are set) continuously. There Is just No actual polyphonic sounds/patches that will play through. When keys are played they do not make sound, they only control the sound/freq on the VCA / VCF and env1 and env2 filters. All modulators work, and control the Noise/sound that continuously plays through while keyboard is on.

THIS KEYBOARD IS ESSENTIALLY A NOISE MACHINE AT THIS POINT IN ITS LIFE.

However, There is hope!!! She can be fixed, It just doesn’t pay for me to have it repaired. I have had it in the repair shop, so i know it is doable.
I also have a diagnostics test report from when it was last in the shop to determine what the problem is” Link

“This is an auction for a CLASSIC Jaw Droppingly stunning condition ROLAND Jupiter 8 vintage synth with flight case It has just had the single owner who hardly used it and it is fully working and probably one of the very best ones I have ever come across – what’s more this is for sale at just 1p and NO RESERVE!

Take a look for yourself, you can see the keys are unmarked, there is no scratches and very minimal wear on the lettering and silk screening. It has been fully tested and works perfectly and sounds amazing as you would expect..” Link

“Roland Jp 8 14 bit model with Encore 5.2 MIDI in out. This Jp8 is in 100% all original working condition to the best of my knowledge, and it is in real nice overall cosmetic condition, the original factory patches are still in memory. There are a few scuffs and scrapes on it, mostly on the upper top left side where the company that Midified the Jp8 had placed their company sticker, which I thought was rather dumb and unappealing so I removed it. There are no broken or missing knobs, sliders, or other controls anywhere and no missing voices or dead keys. I have another Jp8 and have decided to sell this one as I do not have the space for two of them anymore. This Jp8 does not require any warm-up time as it is ready to play as soon as you turn it on, the Jp8 is a classic analog polysynth, no other analog polysynth of the same era can overall compete with the Jp8. The synth will ship in a new custom made heavy-duty flight case, regular UPS 3-day ground included with the BIN lower 48 states only.” Link

“If you are looking for a pro vintage analog synth that is ready to go in your studio, this is it…

This auction is for a Roland Jupiter 8 Polyphonic Synthesizer, owned by film composer Gary Chang. This vintage analog poly synth has been used on countless movie scores and has been meticulously cared for in his smoke free studio – it has only seen action in studio projects – never on the road. It has just returned from Alive Sound in Burbank, where it has been gone over – pots cleaned and serviced; all functions checked out fine. IT SOUNDS GREAT!!!

There is a very small paint scratch at the top left of the faceplate and a few superficial dings on the left adjacent aluminum endbell (shown in picture). Although it is virtually perfect, it will be sold as used, as-is condition.

In addition to the typical stock JP8 features, this Jupiter 8 is fitted with the Encore JP8 MK midi retrofit kit (manual included with instrument), which adds additional patch memories and the following additional midi features…

-Separately selectable MIDI channel for upper and lower banks.
-Arpeggiator can be clocked from the original way (internal/external) or from MIDI with a variable PPQ from 1 to 24.
-MIDI pitch bend. Scalable from the front panel in semitone intervals up to one octave.
-Hold from MIDI (Controller 64d – sustain)
-Keyboard mode-Solo, Unison, Poly1, Poly2 selected from sysex message or non-registered parameter.
-Arpeggio mode- Range 1,2,3,4; Up, Down, Up/Down, Random selected from sysex message or non-registered parameter.
-MIDI EXPRESSION to FILTER cutoff. (Controller #11d)
-MIDI VOLUME to VCA control. (Controller #07d)
MIDI BREATH controller to VCA, Filter cutoff, or Both. (Controller #02d)
-Portamento ON/OFF from controller # 41h (65).
-COMPUTUNE from MIDI Tune Request F6h
-MIDI dump from “cassette save” button while in MIDI mode. This allows JP8s to transfer patches without the need for a computer. This also allows a generic sysex utility to store the JP8 memory.

The Encore JP8 MK kit also provides an additional 64 patches for a total of 128 patches. They can easily be selected from MIDI or from the front panel. The patch presets can also remember any two patches from the total 128. DUAL MIDI CHANNEL RESPONSE allows a SPLIT preset to have each timber controlled by separate MIDI channels over a five octave range. If the JP8 is in SPLIT mode, it will respond to MIDI data on two independent channels. If the JP8 is in the DUAL mode, it will respond to all data only from the upper channel with one exception. The exception is that it will still respond to patch change information on the lower channel to facilitate modification of the layer. This will simplify sequencing because the JP8 will not require two identical note data streams.” Link

“Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer in perfect working order. The synth was fully serviced 3 weeks ago by a well respected synth technician (I have paperwork). There are no scratchy pots, no dead keys, all oscillators work, no missing caps and the synth holds its tuning. The only issues are cosmetic. There is some motling on the front and back of the synth. This is quite common to early roland synths. It is basically a bubbling up underneath the paintwork, this could be restored. Selling due to ongoing financial difficulties. “ROLAND JUPITER 8

With Kenton Midi kit

Fully functional with the exception of one dead key and a sticky pitch bend ” Link

“Condition: This Jupiter-8 is in near perfect electronic and near-mint cosmetic condition. There are no dents in the metal. The colored orange paint reflects like a mirror and the Jupiter-8 logo is clean and clear. There is no sun damage and all of the parts retain their original coloring, including the white buttons and switches. The stainless steel end panels are very clean and bright with only the tiniest of marks on the top aluminum edge on the right side. The stainless screws on the sides show no pitting or marks from a screwdriver bits as found on most JP-8′s. The rest of the screws on the synth have retained their glistening finish. The red LED screen is bright and clear, and the plastic lens has only extremely light scratches from dusting it…but they would not show up in the photos. The vinyl-clad exterior is in pristine condition, and the finish has only a couple of scratches on the underside of the synth under the keyboard and a couple small scratches on the Roland logo on the back of the synth. The matte surface of the vinyl-clad metal under the pitch bend lever is a bit shinier than other places. The keys are highly reflective with only the occasional mark here and there. The internal components are all present and accounted for, and the internals are clean and free of rust and debris. Needless to say, this is the cleanest example of an early model Jupiter-8 that I have ever owned or seen for sale anywhere on the net, eBay, or otherwise over the past 15 years of collecting synths. So if you’re picky about the condition of your gear, and you settle for only the very best working and physical condition, then this is the synth for you. In my opinion it’s worth paying a few more $ for something that is the best of its kind, with no rust, and no issues. The synth was regularly serviced by a certified Roland technician who services all of my gear.

Functionality: All sliders have that high-quality feel that the Jupiter-8 synths were famous for. All audio outputs, MIDI, velocity (from MIDI), aftertouch (from MIDI), modulation, pitchbend, keys, buttons, and pitchbender function perfectly. The modulation button in the performance section at the lower left is a bit touchy due to a dirty contact and needs a bit more pressure than normal to activate it. On all the JP-8′s I’ve owned, those buttons are always an issue. Aside from that, there is nothing functionally wrong with this synth. The Encore MIDI kit provides MIDI in and out (for saving sysex data) and is considered to be the best MIDI kit available for the JP-8 and works perfectly. For more info on everything that the Encore MIDI kit can do, please check out the Encore site at encoreelectronics.com” Link

“I bought this Roland Jupiter 8 from Ko (Modeless Factory) in Japan in Feb 2009 and it has been sitting in my non-smoking room since. Before it was shipped out to me, the synth had been tested and serviced (all keys, knobs, faders and buttons are working fine). This JP-8 comes with some unknown MIDI mod (with MIDI in/out/thru) and there are also a couple of toggle switches on the left (between the “Volume” and “Master Tune” knobs) labeled “VCA” and “VCF” (I’m not entirely sure what these do but flicking the “VCA” switch up seems to very marginally increase the loudness of the sound). There is also a little red button next to the power switch and till today, I still haven’t figured out what exactly it does (some kind of soft reset or something? perhaps some of you might know?). I have been using it with my computer sequencer hooked to a MOTU MIDI Express and they work fine together. If you are reading this, I assume you already know what this synth sound like.

The serial number of this JP-8 is 090611 (as you can see in one of the photos below).

A couple of things about this machine which you should be aware of:

1. As you can see from the pictures, the silk-screening on this JP-8 has seen better days. There is, however, no rust anywhere on the body.

2. Since early this year, the “Memory Protect” switch seemed to have gone wonky insofar that the “Memory Protect” light is always on (even when the switch behind is set on the “Off” position). As a result, I’m unable to save newly modified patches to its memory though there is no issue calling up the patches already stored in there. Everything else works perfectly except for this saving issue. I don’t know what causes this and I would love to get it checked/fixed before putting it on ebay but the local Roland service center (in Singapore where I live) has stopped servicing analog gear since 2008. If you have access to a qualified synth technician, you probably would want to get this fixed.” Link

“Classic Roland Jupiter 8 which has been cared for to the ultimate degree!

This is a stunning example of Roland`s landmark polysynth, first introduced in the early 80`s to an eager marketplace.

This model is in awesome timewarp condition, and has the benefit of being professionally retrofitted with a Kenton MIDI kit too!

The JP8 has a huge reputation for it`s beautiful silky sound pallette, coupled with the reliability expected of a professional musical instrument.

As these synthesisers become less and less readily available their market prices have seen huge increases over the last few years. This makes the example offered here completely worthy of the description of collector/museum object, and most certainly a great investment potential.

The synth comes with a brand new custom hard flight case for transportation and storage (made by Swan Flight Cases) which is finished in a cool red exterior trim.

The Jupiter 8 is open to serious offers, with local collection only offered (north east coast UK) when the buyer can then play the instrument to satisfy themselves of it`s operation.” Link

“Roland Jupiter 8 vintage synthesizer with MIDI retrofit and Anvil case. This unit is in beautiful condition and sounds totally amazing! Don’t miss your chance to own one of the greatest analogue polyphonic synthesizers ever created. The JP-8 was Roland’s flagship synth and no expense was spared. The sliders and knobs have a heavy, weighted feel to them and the thing is built like a tank. The MIDI retrofit (unsure of the make, the previous owner had it installed) has basic MIDI note on/off on Channel 1.

The lettering on the face is clean except for a small chip of paint on the VCO2 slider, visible in the photo. There are also some small marks here and there, but as you can see from the photos the overall condition is excellent.” Link
