“You may be wondering, what is version 6 software, so I will explain. Back around 1984 when the Jupiter 6 was made, it was one of the very first synthesizers to implement the MIDI protocol. It only transmitted and received on two channels; channel 1 was the upper voice (upper half of the keyboard) and channel 2 carried the lower voice ( lower half of the keyboard). In December of 1984 Roland offered a software upgrade to Jupiter 6 owners, Version 6, that installed a new PROM chip on the CPU board. This upgrade made it possible to now transmit and receive on any of the 16 MIDI channels. By holding down the tune button you assign a MIDI channel by pressing the bank button ( A or B ) and the number button (1 to 8 ). So for instance A-4 is channel 4 and B-8 is channel 16. (It’s real easy to do by the way!). The Lower Voice will always be the “base” channel you assigned plus 1, so if you selected channel 4 with the tune button procedure, the Upper Voice will be channel 4 and the Lower Voice will be 4 + 1 = 5 . In this fashion you can have the Jupiter 6 send and receive on any MIDI channel.

I am the second owner of his great synthesizer. I purchased it from ED SCHAEFFER of the Keyboard Exchange in Denver on 8/25 /1986. It was shortly after this I had the new ver. 6 software professionally installed, as I determined that it would be useful in the music I was creating at that time. I have played several other Jupiter 6’s since, and none of them had this upgrade. I beleive that it is a pretty rare and not too well known item in the world of the JP-6.

Anyway, now that I’ve explained the upgrade, let’s get on with the description of this particular instrument. I’m going to assume that if your reading this you are already familiar with the specs, you can do your own research through Google or Yahoo.

It has never been gigged (by me) but was used for many hours by me over the years for fun and music creation up untill about 4 years ago when I started using mostly software synths.

The pictures I have included should tell most of the story. The front panel has some scuffing here and there. The worst of these is near the top of the B and C keys in the last octave of the keyboard which you can just make out in the pictures. It’s not a dent, just a scuff. There are a few other very minor scuffs that are so small and insignificant that they don’t show up in the pictures. There are, as I mentioned no dents anywhere on the synth. The sides, back and bottom are near perfect. I did sign and date the bottom with a permanent ink pen as was my practice at that time with all my gear. Sorry about that, but I wanted some way to identify it in case it was lost or stollen. Other than than that, it is in remarkable condition for it’s age.

As far as functionality it is perfect. All functions work as ther supposed to and the synth sounds great. I tested it during the picture taking session and it brought back many memories of the times I have spent with it in the past. The manual control section is in fully working (Bender, LFO button ect.) The keyboard is near perfect, no chips or cracks. When testing it, some notes required several attempts to generate sound but this went away after repeated striking. The new owner would probably get the key contacts cleaned, or more cheaply, just play the hell out of it and it will be fine. It’s been leaning against my bedroom wall with hefty bag over it for a long time, so it is normal that some keys required several hits to start sounding again, as anyone with knowledge of these matters could tell you.” Link

Cosmetics are 8/10 it looks nice there is a small dent on the back, scratches on the bottom and basic signs of wear but still looks great. Some scratches on the side and some scuffs on the metal end pieces.The unit is fully functional and all voices tune properly. This Jupter-6 has also had all of its sliders replaced.

The physical condition of this Europa Jupiter-6 is good. All
slider caps and buttons present and working. There is a little
bit of oxidization in a few places.

Also included is an atomic proof custom flight case that will keep
this machine safe and sound. It was manufactured by DAT Cases
in British Columbia. The buyer should note that the weight of the

“I got this synth when i was just a lad over 23 years ago and unfortunately its being used less and less due to work and family commitments. Thus its with regret that i now offer this incredible synth for sale. it comes in immaculate condition with a copy of the manual and service notes on cd rom and also a paper copy of said notes. i will also throw in my aluminium flight case to make sure it reaches its new owner in perfect condition. if i were to be hyper sensitive on its condition there are a few little marks on the edges of the side panels its not 100 % perfect but its close. it has been kept in a smoke free enviroment and hasn t been gigged. i powered it up the other night and it still sounds as good today as it did when i played it for the first time. i would prefer to ship within the UK but will ship overseas if required. obviously its not a light synth so postage abroad will be quite expensive. the postage noted below is for within the UK overseas bidders contact me for postage options. the synth is 42 inches wide 4 and 3/4 inches high and 17 inches deep and it wieghs in at just over 35 pounds plus the weight and extra dimensions of the case. good luck on your bidding as there seems to be less and less of these about.

“This has been in my collection for years , but has seen less and less use with the arrival of my Virus Polar , so with much regret , i’m letting it go – hopefully someone can give it a home where you can make more use of it.

As can be seen from the photos , it’s in excellent cosmetic condition – some of the silkscreening around the “Save , Load,Verify” is a little worn if i’m being ultra objective

Soundwise it’s in A1 condition as well and the keyboard plays beautifully- again , being ultra-objective , some of the pots and sliders are a little crackly but it is getting on for 30 years old!” Link

“Up for grabs is a very good condition Roland Jupiter 6 with the infamous Europa Mod. Also, all sliders were replaced last year except the the LFO Rate and Delay. I am the second owner. I took extra special care in my smoke free, humidity controlled studio. I never took it out to a gig. Everything works perfectly functionally. It’s not in museum like quality, there are some scratches, dings, the upper part of the panel above the VCF is raised (like a bump). I put a pic of the 2 keys that are cracked. They play fine. If there wasnt crack lines you wouldnt notice them. I do have replacement keys just in case. Besides that, it’s a beast of a synth and an even rarer classic with the Europa Mod which makes everything midiable except the LFO1 and the mod wheel. I will be shipping it in a keyboard case. Here are some of the details:

○ Many new arpeggiator modes

○ The arpeggiator can now be synchronized from external clock trigger, MIDI clock or the improved internal clock. Europa’s internal clock is extremely steady and can now be used to trigger and clock external MIDI equipment

○ Almost all (excluding master volume and bender board controls) sliders, knobs, and soft switches have the ability to be changed via standard MIDI continuous controllers. This is great for modifying board parameters in real time

○ Includes the ability to save and load patches/presets via MIDI. Never use that unreliable tape interface again! Trade patches with other Europa upgraded Jupiter 6 owners

○ The Europa operating system can be updated by way of the MIDI interface from any Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh based personal computers. No need to open the board! Source code for the update utility is available so it may be ported to any platform

○ Europa stores all patches and presets in its onboard flash. This means no more lost patches or presets when the controller board battery goes bad!

○ Europa includes 4 additional voice assignment modes over the factory Roland code

○ Europa remembers the state of all of the Jupiter 6’s settings even after power down. If you’re in the middle of editing a patch and you power down, the board will be in the same state when it was powered off!

○ Most versions of Roland’s firmware for the Jupiter 6 did not allow changing of the MIDI channel. Europa allows this and retains this setting even after power off

○ Europa can generate a random patch! It’s great when you’re looking for inspiration or just want to make strange noises

○ VCO 1 And VCO 2 ’s waveforms can be enabled and disabled individually without having to hold down multiple buttons. Many people didn’t know that more than one waveform could be enabled because Roland’s interface wasn’t set up this way!

○ VCO 1 And VCO 2 can be synchronized to each other. Good for making interesting sounds AND VCO 1 And VCO 2 oscillators can be completely disabled. This is to allow the creation of patches that use the resonant filter as the oscillator or for single oscillator patches – something not possible with the original Roland code even with the oscillator balance set to either extreme

○ Voice allocation can be monitored on the front panel. This is useful for gauging voice utilization during performance as well as assisting in debugging a malfunctioning Jupiter 6

○ Search through the stored patches and listen to them without destroying the contents of the currently edited patch! Useful for finding a home for a newly created patch

○ Europa can assign incoming pitch bend, modulation wheel, channel aftertouch, and note velocity to any continuous controller. It responds to incoming pitch bend messages as an assignable controller but will not alter the pitch of the notes played as a traditional pitch bend would. Incoming note velocity is changed on a per voice board basis and affects all held notes on a given SPLIT

○ Europa can restore factory patches and presets, and will not malfunction if NVRAM becomes corrupt AND the Jupiter 6’s local keyboard can be enabled and disabled

○ Version 2.0 increases the internal patch and preset storage by 6 times, to a total of 288 patches and 192 presets. Each bank of 48 patches and 32 presets is accessible via the front panel or a standard MIDI Bank Select message. The upper and lower splits can use patches from different banks if desired AND unwanted changes to patches can be undone at the push of a button. Up to 127 button presses, 84 slider moves, or some intermediate combination of the two can be undone or redone, until a patch is saved or a new patch is selected AND layer mode allows the upper and lower patches to be played from the keyboard at the same time, while being edited individually or simultaneously. In Layer mode, the lower synth has 2 voices,and the upper 4 voices AND Version 2.0 allows the upper & lower splits to be transposed independently. Held arpeggios can be transposed on the fly for many creative performance possibilities AND the arpeggiator will start at the beginning of the next measure when a song position pointer message is received plus much more!

All buttons, knobs, sliders and wheel work flawlessly. Battery is new and internals have been inspected and cleaned. The Europa functions wonderfully and precisely to specification. I have the CD and printed manual.” Link

“The Jupiter 6 (“J6″) is a 6 voice synth with a splitable keyboard, memory for 48 tones and 32 patches (two tones set up in a split combination). Each voice consists of two voltage controlled oscillators, a multi mode filter, two ADSR envelopes, and LFO. The unit has a second LFO which is shared by all six voices. Oddly enough while the unit can do splits it does not have a dual mode (due to the way the voices are split up). There are two separate synthesizer boards found in side the board a two voice unit and a four voice unit which are under separate control and allows for the splits. Measures 42″ wide, 4 ¾” high, and 17″ deep. It tips the scales at 35 lbs.

Unit comes with a steel carrying case that has a working key lock with key. Also has a fabric cover protector.” Link

The Jup 6 is a scaled down version of the Jup 8 in terms of programming and polyphony. However the Jup 6 has some major improvements of its own such as newly added MIDI control and better tuning stability! While the Jup 6 does have MIDI, the implementation is very rudimentary and hard to control. The Jup 6 was one of the very first (along with the Sequential Prophet 600) synths to use the then new MIDI protocol, and the implementation on the Jup 6 is far from complete.” Link
