“This Jupiter 4 is in very good condition! It was serviced about 2 months ago. It works great and sounds absolutely incredible! The wooden end cheeks have some chipped places on them. The best thing to do if you want to get this to mint or near mint condition would be to have some new all wooden sides made and stained. It will be professionally packed and insured. I sell a lot of keyboards/synthesizers on Ebay and I play what I sell. This would be a true keeper but I have plans to upgrade to a Jupiter 8.” Link

“Up for auction is a Roland Jupiter 4. I have owned this synth for the last 10 years and am reluctantly selling it due to other financial commitments. it has been used periodically by me in my home studio throughout this time.

The synth is in absolutely amazing condition for it’s age , there are no significant marks or blemishes of any kind, there are no missing parts (knobs etc..) every function, filter etc.. works perfectly. it has been professionally serviced and tuned approx 2 years ago and had very little use since then.” Link

“A synth famously used by Duran Duran, Human League, Gary Numan, Simple Minds etc.

One owner from new (1979), with original manual and in good condition. There are scratches on the front panel and other parts of the synth, and some small corrosion spots, but the synth looks good for a vintage, used item. All faders and knobs are original.

In full working order – serviced, tuned etc. August 2011. I can provide a copy of the service invoice. All contacts, in/outs, faders, pots, keys have been cleaned and treated” Link

“Roland Jupiter 4 compuphonic. This fantastic synth has been stored for many years with one previous owner. I have had it checked and it is in good working order. It is 100% intact although one of the sliders does not run smoothly but does work. There is some minor damage to wooden end plates and some small rust spots on the body. I have tried to show these as best I can in the photos. This item comes with the original instruction manual althought the front/back cover is missing. Also included is an original Roland pedal and original leaflet advertising the jupiter 4.” Link

“Selling this original Roland Jupiter 4 analog synthesizer first member of the classic Jupiter line.

Item is in good condition, has been serviced. Some sings of use on top panel etc but nothing serious, overall good machine.

Currently this is the best priced Jupiter 4 on Ebay, others charge 2500+ so get it while it is there.

On the back side a CV/Gate modification has been fitted, great for studio work!

I really like this machine, it sounds classic. The 4 voices stacked in unison mixed with its on board chorus gives a real wall of sound.

This synth has that thick sounding Roland analog filter and the famous meaty Roland VCO’s” Link

“Original legendary Roland Jupiter-4 in excellent working order.
This unit has been serviced this year ( tuned and re-capped) and sounds powerful and just simply amazing.
It was one of the first poly synthesizers (4 individual voices, which could be synced together for one phat monophonic lead), it has a pitch wheel that could be assigned to the VCA, VCF, VCO or all together.
Some cool bands used its velocity in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s music scene especially in the new wave/punk area: Simple Minds, The Cure, Gary Numan, Human League, Duran Duran.
Cosmetically logo and screening is in nice shape, however vthe unit has some scratches on the metal and wood panels, which I consider normal wear for a 30+ year machine. It even has an old Star Trek sticker on the left side wood panel and I left it there to keep its originality and time signature.” Link

“Legendary Roland Jupiter 4 in excellent working order. Unit was professionally serviced this year (tuned and re-capped) and sounds amazing w all functions working except for patch storage. Cosmetically, unit has some wear to paneling and is missing a knob and slider or two. The original joy stick had been broken off and a functional replacement has been added by my tech. A small whole was drilled in the front chasis where an extra knob had been added (removed during recent service/tune-up). ” Link

“Up for auction is a gently used Roland Jupiter 4. All functions/sliders work great. Cosmetically the keys have slightly yellowed and there is some wear along the edges of the wood panels. I have taken a close up picture on the worst spot. All the lettering is pristine and there is not a touch of rust. Very nice synth. The serial number dates it to one of the last revisions before they switched to the IR3109 Filter Chips, so this one is still BA662.” Link

“Completely unmodified, works well. Some small chips etc on the wood laminate on the ends, you can see these in the photos. Has a UK plug.” Link

The wheel on the left side seemed to change the pitch of the keys when it was moved.” Link

“Here for sale is my fully working Roland Jupiter 4 in amazing collectors condition.

I am a collector/enthusiast not a producer so my synths don’t get much use, however when I
play with this, hours can pass. I am always finding new sounds from it.

Reluctant sale but I need to sell some of my collection.

You will love this synth.

It is a UK 220V model and completely original.

Condition

There is barely a mark on it, truly stunning condition for its age and certainly the
nicest example I have seen. You probably won’t find a Jupiter 4 in better condition.

The wood endplates are pretty much perfect. The metal work and paint work are superb.
The only notable blemish is a fine 4mm scratch on the top cover.

Every key, slider, knob and switch works as it should. Patch memory works as it should.
All 4 voices work as they should and Unison is awesome. Arpeggio fully works and is a lot of fun.

Kept in a smoke and pet free home and always has a keyboard cover on when not in use.

This is a fine instrument in stunning and rare condition.” Link

“I’m selling some of my vintage keyboards and synths and her is my Roland Jupiter 4 Compuphonic Synthersizer. I have owned this Jupiter for years and haven’t used it for at least 5 years so it’s time to sell it and let somebody else use this fantastic synthersizer. The Jupiter is in pretty good overall condition , all the sliders and slider caps are there , in fact nothing is missing at all which is pretty rare in itself. There are no major scratches or blemishes to mention , the wooden end blocks do have the odd mark around the edges , the screen printed control panel is in very good order with no fading or missing bits , the keys are in excellent condition. Overall the synth is in fine condition for a 35+ year old instrument. I turned the Jupiter on this week for the first time in years and everything is in working order apart from the ADSR section which I can get no responce from , this was working when I last used it so it must be something fairly easy to have repaired .” Link

“Had this beast re-tuned and serviced a few months back but still has a few issues with it.First is that when using the arpeggiator it can go into hold note mode and even when you switch out of arp mode the hold note wont go away. This can be resolved by switching off the synth for about 10 secs .The other thing is probably a problem with ENV Generator when put into inverted mode which can be heard on the Preset “The Voice” where when the key is depressed theres a nasty glitch sound .Cosmetically shes in a 6 out 10 condition, not too bad but a little rough around the edges.
This synth does really have a character all of its own and would be a great creative tool for someone with more keyboard skills than myself.” Link

“For sale here is the Roland Jupiter 4 Compuphonic synthesizer. This four voice analogue synthesizer has been completely serviced by Marc Marc Amsterdam. All contacts, in/outs, faders, pots, keys have been cleaned and treated for good contact and good functionality. Further a complete recap of the electrolyt capacitators was done, and the synth was calibrated/tuned. Also some other important things were done to make this synth ready again for use in a professional environment. (for more info check the certificate next to the pictures).

When I bought this synth it already had a CV/GATE modification which didn’t work. This modification was done very clumsy so it was fixed and improved by Marc Marc. The inside cables used for the modification were of very low quality and were all replaced by HQ ones. Also, instead of CV/GATE for two voices, it is extended to CV/GATE for all four voices. The voices can be triggered separately (4×1, 3×1, 2×1,1×1) or as an ensemble (1×4). Four new cables (Procab jack 6.3 stereo – 2 x jack 6.3 mono) will be included to connect the CV/GATE outputs to a sequencer or midi/cv converter.
The extended memory modification was also already installed when I bought the Jupiter 4. The original memory is extended from 8 to 128 memory locations. Very handy, especially for live gigs! It was working when I tested it but to be sure Marc Marc also checked it thoroughly. It is working perfect! (for more info check the explanation next to the pictures)

Cosmetically it is in good condition. Both side panels are damaged a bit, and there are scratches on the front panel and other parts of the synth. There is also a tiny spot with corrosion near the VCF faders. But beside these imperfections the synth looks good. All faders and knobs are original. Some ugly keys were replaced by better looking ones. Also, inside and outside all dust has been removed, and all knobs and keys are cleaned. More pictures will follow in a few days.

Mängelliste::
- ein Schalter fehlt ( VCO rechts)
- VCA level Knopf fehlt (Schalter funktioniert trotzdem)

Link

“A vintage Roland Jupiter 4 Compuphonic Synthersizer. I have owned this legendary synth for over 10 years and it is in great condition , all the sliders and caps are there , no broken or missing switches , the wooden ends do have some age related scratches but nothing too bad. I have not used the synth for 3-4 years and it has been in storage since then. I have turned the synth on for the first time in years today and it powers up , the light comes on but unfortunately I cannot get any sound from the synth. It was fully working when I last used it and it has only sat on a shelf since then so there cannot be anything too seriously wrong , I suspect a dry solder joint . I had the power supply completely recapped around 5 years ago . Due to the age of the synth and as it is not working at the moment I am offering it here as sold as seen with no returns .” Link

“For Sale Classic Roland Jupiter 4 Polyphonic Synth.

This was purchased in 1979 by my father directly off Roland in Japan and shipped back to the UK.

It will need a transformer available from Maplin.

It has been in the family home since new, has never left the house, my younger sister and I learned to play piano on it.

It comes complete with the original manuals, in Japanese and English.
Also the original Flight Case and keys for the locks never used.

This is as close to new you will ever get for a 22 year old synth.” Link

Link

Jupiter 4, Roland @ 16 January 2011, “No Comments”

“Today I am auctioning off my Roland Jupiter 4 Analog Polysynth. This beast sounds marvelous. It is my favorite polysynth (I’ve owned a Roland Jupiter 8, Oberheim OB8, Yamaha CS60, Rhodes Chroma, Juno 60, and tested out dozens more), and it has a personality like no other. It is not a VCO on a chip… The VCOs are discrete (it actually uses the same kind of electronic piece as the early revision Minimoogs), rather than the on-chip design so many others went for soon after (Like the OB8, Prophets, Memorymoog etc). This gives it a really monstrous analog sound. They do not make them like this anymore (yet they make on-chip analog synths still). It is built well like most Rolands of the time and has a great analog chorus (I’ve tried all other Roland/Boss effects units trying to replicate this sound but I cannot find one), thickening up the sound dramatically. It does not sound like the Juno 60 or 106 but you could say it sounds like the one in the RS505 and VP330, although I think there’s is more over-the-top, a bit too much I must say. There is no sound more powerful than the Jupiter 4 in unison mode with it’s ensemble chorus. One caveat is the right channel output for the chorus section is a little finicky so you have to keep the 1/4″ cable a little unplugged for it to pass through in stereo. This isn’t really a problem as once you have it in this position, it will always play in stereo (it doesn’t need to be loose, just not all the way in).

This unit was outfitted with a brilliant mod that allows CV/Gate control over each of the four voices. This is much more useful than simple midi as you can control this from analog sequencers, drum machines, a modular, or if you’d like, a midi to cv unit or silent way. I used this unit with Ableton Live and Silent Way running through a MOTU Ultralte MK3. I recommend using this with Silent Way as you have full control of each voice allows you to do things like apply LFOs to detune each voice. Nevermind what I said earlier; the most powerful sound is running CV/Gate into each of the 4 voices, dropping 2 voices down an octave and having LFOs subtly modulating the pitch on a few of the voices, therefore turning this into a 4 VCO discrete monosynth! It’s astonishing the amount you can do with this. There are switches next to each set of CV/Gate so you can turn on and off the feature if you’d like. Sometimes, I’d like to just run one voice into the CV/Gate for a bassline and use the others to play melodies and such.

The sound is full of character and life. Like I said, they are completely discrete vcos. A lot of the most brilliant 80′s classic synth parts were played on a Jupiter 4. Stuff like Duran Duran’s “Rio”, a lot of Human League’s “Dare” and earlier albums, Depeche Mode’s “Speak & Spell”, and Yazoo’s “Upstairs at Eric’s” . These are seminal albums of synth pop and I would say a huge part of what makes them so special is how great the synthesizers sound like. For a more recent example of how this synthesizer is still viable for modern sounds, check out a lot of Legowelt’s work as well. The JP 4 is very versatile and difficult to make a bad sound on. I prefer it’s sound leaps and bounds over the Jupiter 6 (which is just a plain ole CEM 80′s synth) and like it a bit better than the Jupiter 8, which honestly sounds a bit more polite and reserved (more 80′s sounding than 70′s I’d say). There are few poly synths that can be compared to this unit.. The only ones I can think of is the Korg PS3000-series. They are all discrete VCOs as well and have a similar power, but different overall tone. Those are all 6k+ though and not nearly as reliable as a Jupiter 4, though!

Physically it looks good. It has a couple scrapes here and there on the wood and it has some abrasions on the front (you get the idea from the pictures). This synth is about 30 years old so it’s par for the course I’d say. There was a Roland logo on the back but it must’ve gotten misplaced. It saves presets fine but one out of the 8 slot’s (we’ve come along way at least in terms of patch memory, huh? haha) button doesn’t stay down. This was never a problem for me because I don’t save presets and just make them on the fly but I suppose it’s worth mentioning. I will be including high-quality ALPS replacement buttons if you so feel inclined to replace them. Creating sounds on this unit is inspiring so if you’re anything like me, you’ll have it on “manual” 100% of the time anyways. The sliders all feel good and do not produce any static. They move smoothly and do not have a bunch of dust in them. I kept a thin cover over the unit when I did not use it so there’s no reason why it would be any different. All of the voices play in tune. I had it serviced not too long ago for a voice card issue and before I owned it, the PSU was worked on as well as the sliders. This unit should have a long life ahead of it! I can send the Roland Jupiter 4 technical manual via email if you’d like and you’re the winner. Sometimes, you must tune the unit. It’s an easy process that takes a few minutes but you will have to do this every couple months and perhaps, after you receive the unit (shipping it naturally affects the tuning because of climate change). All you need is a guitar tuner (or tuning program in your computer) and you’re set. This model is a 240v model but I have an adapter to plug this into the wall here stateside. Rumor is that the 240v versions of analog synths sound better but… I’ve yet to hear 120v version of the JP4 so I can’t comment.” Link

Link

“For sale is one used Roland Jupiter 4 synthesizer. This is a rare, early first edition transitor VCO based models that I bought used, in rough shape in 2006, and had it mechanically and electronically restored by Kurt’s Amps in Arizona to 100% condition back in 2007. It’s particularly unique in that the sound it has is characteristically warmer sounding than from the later models that began using integrated circuits. It is, however, showing it’s age cosmetically, along with prior owners poor attempts at template painting to refresh the ROLAND and JUPITER 4 paint stenciling.

I’m selling for two reasons. 1.) I don’t have room for this unit as it is BIG and HEAVY, and takes up too much footprint in my little studio. 2.) The units tuning and scaling has drifted, and needs re-calibration. The restoration performed on the unit was extensive, expensive (I’ve got over $2000 into it), but worked well. OEM buttons were replaced, new memory storage battery was replaced, keyboard ribbon cable connector painstakenly hand wired (broken pins on original). Everything works as designed, but due to it’s age it is a little flaky and occasionally will not save programs, other than that and what was mentioned earlier, it’s fine. Given it’s collectible status, I thought to send it out again for minor tweaking, or do myself because of the expense I’ve paid into it, but I’ve decided it’s best to sell to someone who can care for it while I move on things I have room and time for.” Link

“For sale my Roland Jupiter 4 with CV.

Firstly, this is a very very reluctant sale. I am a web design mature student and seem to be doing great as a freelancer. As such I fancy a 30” monitor. To facilitate this I am selling my J4. I have to be honest with myself, music is a hobby and as such can’t afford to have a 10K set up any longer. I am family man now and its time to sell up. My J4 is the first of things to go.

I have owned this classic since 1992. I had a CV connector fitted (Front left of the photo) and it was fitted by a pro company but in honesty I cannot for this life of me remember who did it. It steals a note from your polyphony if activated. So, using CV will turn your 4 note J4 into a 3 note J4 with CV.” Link

“ROLAND JUPITER 4

international bidders welcome, please ask for shipping costs. ” Link

“This auction is for a Roland Jupiter 4 Analogue Synthesizer in excellent working order. All knobs and buttons present. It has the odd small scratch here and there on the “wood” effect side panels but is otherwise in good cosmetic condition for its age.

This is a fine example of oldest of the Jupiter family. If you’re looking at this auction I probably don’t need to tell you about the remarkable versatility of this instrument; it’s majestic sounds; the warmness of tone. Frankly it’s what digital synthesis wishes it was. A true classic.” Link

“I’d hopped to fit this with the IO kit myself and keep it, but the roof repairs are apparently more important…sigh!

Cosmetically it’s not mint with some dents in the end panels and some scrapes on the metal work but the it’s solid and the circuitary internally is top notch, the recent service incuded a complete new PSU so she’ll be good for years to come.

This is a genuine analogue Poly synth with real analogue oscilators (the Junos had DCOs Not VCOs) and filters, for BIG 4 voice pads and Stacked unison lead and bass sounds This JP does NOT have MIDI, but you can buy the IO kit and fit it very easily yourself for 98 Euros.

The synth has been recently serviced (you can see the date sticker on the rear) works perfectly and sounds awesome” Link

“Roland Jupiter 4 Synth. This was bought by my father in Japan in 1980 and shipped back to the UK. It has been kept in its Flight Case since then.
It is as new condition.

It comes complete with both UK and Japanese Manuals, all original. This has no marks or damage.

You WILL NEVER see another in this mint condition.

As it is a Japanese model, it will need a 240v to 100v step down transformer, available in Maplin.” Link

“This auction is for one vintage Roland JP4 Jupiter analog synthesizer in very fine cosmetic and excellent functional condition. This is a 117V North American model and has been modified by myself, cleanly and reliably, for CV/Gate input for all 4 voices. According to the date chart at http://www.gearslutz.com/board/5059183-post9.html it was made in November 1978, which makes it a first year model and has the early filter that everyone’s after.

Cosmetically it’s very clean, there are a few small blemishes here and there but I’d give it a solid B+. If you are looking for a museum piece, it’s not quite there… if not you’ll be happy with the condition.

Functionally, it works great and sounds amazing. There are 2 very small issues worth mentioning…
–The filter cutoff slider, when manhandled, will sometimes mistrack and jump to fully open. When operated with a very minor amount of care it is fine… basically it takes about 30 seconds to learn how to use it properly and then this never happens. If you are very heavy handed, though, and would rather play the cutoff slider constantly in real time than use the mod wheel or pedal input as the designers intended, you might want to consider getting it looked at. It doesn’t bother me and I use this synth quite a bit on a regular basis.
–There is a slight amount of noise in the last 25% of travel in the Master Volume pot. There is no noise when it’s not being tweaked, it’s just a little scratchy when being turned.
It has no other issues. It is tuned, reliable and scales well across the keyboard. Despite some internet hype, this actually a pretty reliable little synth and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.
When I installed the CV/Gate mod (on 1/8″ jacks) I added 2 switches that select between internal and external CV and Gate (one switch for each). This is really cool because it allows you to leave your CV inputs plugged in the back and still operate it from the keyboard with the flick of 2 switches. I don’t know why they didn’t design all vintage synths this way, it makes things so much easier!

In my opinion the JP4 is the best sounding, most characteristic and most fun-to-use synth ever, if I had to have one desert island synth it would be this. It’s so hands-on, it’s sonically really flexible despite its limited architecture, and it’s near impossible to make it sound bad. And it has the best, most unique sounding arpeggiator ever made. The only reason I’m getting rid of it is because I have 2… I used to have 3 and would stack them over CV/Gate via a midi–>CV converter…. huge! Now that I’ve entered the 21st century and am using Pro Tools to do easy overdubbing for layering, I figured I’d get rid of one and try and get a different flavor of synth” Link

“You are bidding on two Jupiter 4 analogue 4 note polyphonic synthesizers (1978) and one Roland CR78 drumbox which can communicate with the Jupiter 4′s onboard arpeggiator.

One Jupiter 4 is fully working however it is currently suffering from some dust in the sliders. The LFO bend slider is missing it’s top. The Norm/wide switch is broken but can still be used as well as the Norm/Inv switch on the VCF envelope. There are some minor scratches to the woodwork on the case.

The second Jupiter 4 is repairable but is currently slightly internally disassembled and one oscillatior was not firing the last time it was in one piece 4 years ago. This could either be repaired or used to replace missing parts from the working Jupiter 4. The metal work is quite rusty and the noise switch is broken.

The CR78 has some cosmetic damage to the auto/manual switch and the rhythmAB switch but is otherwise in good condition.” Link

“Roland jupiter 4 analog Synthesizer 220 volt
4 x VCO (voices)
One of the greatest analog Synthesizer all time
ensemble chorus build in like Roland dimension-d
Tuning of the 4 voices, you can do it by yourself. On the back the are 4 screws to tune the 4 voices

NOTE !!!!! Optical:
some scratches on the wood (see photo) (wood is dark painted)
2 knobs are missing but fully working (hold knob and protection knob)
1 fader knob is not original but works (trigger rate)
tuning knob is not original but works
4 holes on the deck (owner before me had a rythmbox on the deck and put some screws in it). I remove the screws, so there will be 4 holes. ” Link

” Here we have my Jupiter 4 i have owned for a while now the keyboard is fully working and a great condition considering its age.
There are a few couple of chips on the wood and a mark on the faders as seen in the photos.also has a couple of the button caps missing these have just fallen of not broken.
The keyboards comes with a flight case the i imagine is the same age as the keyboard there is also a manual somewhere when i find it.” Link

“This is a Roland Jupiter 4 synthesizer with a CV/gate mod. There are a few scratches and what appears to be orange paint. All knobs and sliders are present and all keys and funtions are working. However, I have not tested the CV/gate feature. Also, I can’t seem to get any sound out of the headphone jack but this may be because of the type of headphones I have. The other outputs have been tested and they are working. It was refurbished about seven months ago and is working very well but due to the nature of old electronic, it is sold as is. Also note that this is the 240v version.” Link
