Bought this on Ebay a couple of years back from a guy who had long hair, and from what I recall… an armless denim jacket, probably with patches. His house smelt of weed.

ANYWAY…

Been sat in my home studio for a while, didn’t really use it much… it’s monophonic and great for doing basslines and such. Used by the likes of that Liam Howlett / Prodigy, Altern 8 & Ladytron. Aforementioned long haired dude must have drank too much / ‘done some uppers’ one night and took a rattle can to the wooden sides, as well as getting some of his sticker collection out. I removed what I could, but the sides are still painted and there’s a sticker. Groovy.” Link

“It is a Minimoog rip-off for guitarists!

It has the basic signal-layout of the old Moog. Instead of a keyboard there is an input socket on the front for connecting to a custom set of glue-on guitar pickups (no joke). 

 

It is a simple but quite powerful mono-synth. Two VCOs capable of tri, saw and pulse/square waves. VCO2 is tuned relative to VCO1 for some fat detuning or those classic 5ths and 7ths. Sound is fed though a lowpass VCF (24dB/oct) before reaching the VCA. VCA and VCF have independent envelopes of the atypical ADS variety (no release). There is also an LFO and Glide control.” Link

I’ve owned this synth for best part of 15 years – and been a great part of my setup.

Its in extremely good condition for its age – as you can see by the pictures.

Works perfectly with only a slight scratchy pot from time to time.

I had the Kenton CV retrofit installed, so this one CAN BE CONTROLLED OVER MIDI!

(if you have a MIDI to CV converter – standard volt/octave).

It gives input control to CV, Gate & Filter.

Included are the original patch overlays (got some scribbles and notes from previous owner to me), original manual, technical schematics & warranty card – not sure if that will still be current after 30 odd years .

“A quick update regarding the condition of the synth, I have powered it up and all the knobs seem to function well nothing seems crackly though a quick clean wouldn’t do any harm. There are no broken keys. “This synth is in great condition for its age and works great.

It has a couple of little marks and some rust on the case but nothing to detract from it’s look 34 years old and is in really good shape for it’s age. This synth will only appreciate in value.

This synth is becoming quite a sought after synth thanks to it’s quirky analogue sound and has been used by the likes of Future Sound of London, LFO, Nexus 21, Altern 8, Eskimos & Egypt, Fillmore, Man Machine, Tim Simenon, Broadcast, Plone, Luke Vibert, Ladytron, Prodigy and Herb Legowicz of Gusgus.

It has 4 of it’s colour coded caps missing and 1 knob missing see photos but nearly every Jen you will see has missing colour caps-Most of the colour caps are present as can be seen in the pictures.
If you love the analogue sound you will love this synth i will be sad to see this synth go as ive owned it for 24 years now
It makes beautiful lead sounds, and really warm bass sounds and digital synths and software just cannot match the pure analogue sound this synth will produce” Link

“The Jen Synthetone SX1000 is a lovely old analogue synth, with a nice moog-y filter and a distinctive sound. Cosmetic condition is good considering its age – a few minor scratches to the case, but no major rust or flaking paint. Functionally, this synth sounds great. All keys work, and the various sections of the synth are fully functional. Some pots are slightly scratchy, due to its age and dust, but this synth is a doddle to open up and service, so accessing the pots to clean them should be easy enough. This could also mean it would make a great starting point for a synth bending project, as the components are well spread out and there’s lots of room in the case for more.

As is common with this synth, some of the metallic caps from the knobs have been lost over time – see photo. Replacements can sometimes be bought online.” Link

“Hi here we have my superb little Jen sx1000 monophonic synth from the early 80s

These are great little synths with there own unique sound , they don’t sound like a Roland or korg

It works perfectly and has been kept serviced by me all knobs and keys work no crackles or sticky keys ( very common on these ) so it sounds really nice

There is some surface paint flaking and superficial rust on the facia of the synth , this has been treated with krust so has been stabilised , this is really common on Jen synths because the Italian paint job was pants its purely cosmetic and has no effect on the synths functionality

the rear panel has had a re spray as this was easy to do , not so easy on the front with all the legending, i think it still looks great and I’m sure with a bit of wire wool a touch up pen and some t cut colour restorer you could make it look really nice if your so inclined , personally it never bothered me as long as it is stabilised that’s the main thing

two of the little coloured inserts from the knobs are missing , these could be easily replicated with a couple of circles of coloured metallic paper ot plastic , ive seen these restored in all sorts of colours , i just coloured mine in with a silver metallic marker can you spot them ?” Link

“Hi There!

You’re looking at my old Jen Synthtone SX 100 analog monophonic synth!!

As you can see, she’s been knocked about a fair bit, and is in desperate need of some TLC from someone who knows what they are doing. The most obvious problem being missing and broken keys (something I imagine it would be pretty easy to fix)

She does work generally though – powers up, the oscillators work – waveforms/octaves/filters/vibrato/glide/LFO etc, and I’ve used her to record some great sounds – you can’t beat the analog sound!

The pros:

Great analog sound
Very rare
a brilliant project to get going again

Missing and broken keys
scratching and denting to body
some crackle on pots
missing knob on ‘noise section’

Five of the knobs have lost there coloured tops and there is a very small chip on the end of one key.The only mod has been to fit a standard 240V mains inlet socket.
Capable of making some amazing old school sounds.Hours of fun have been had with this.
The steel case work is on the scruffy side but I think that just adds to its appeal there are no dents or any other damage.

The Synth is in amazing condition for it’s age and everything works as it should.

Cosmetically the front panel and keys are almost perfect apart from the missing coloured caps for the knobs. The sides are very good with just slight nicks on the rear corners.

The back of the unit is slightly scratched but very minor, can be seen in photo 5.

This synth is very robustly built and all of the pots still operate as they should with no crackling.

The only pot that does make noise is the octave selection switch. You only here the noise if you are playing and change the octave, which can be expected really.

“Jen SX1000 monosynth from the 70s/80s.
The synth it’s self is working but there are some issues.

2 of the keys in the past have broken (middle E and C#) and been glued back together both the key are still working though. the only other thing is that the keyboard it’s self (the notes) need to be stuck down or clipped back into place, this doesn’t make a difference to the playing. Naturally there are some cosmetic issues but nothing major.

This is a very collectable item and is in very good condition for it’s age.

There are some defects as follows: 3 knob caps are missing (believed to be 2 blue and 1 yellow), some scuffs to the top corners of the wood (or wood effect) veneer and there is a small chip to back LH corner of black area and finally the metal part of the plastic lug on one side of the music stand has broken off (I am sure this is easily repairable).

The front plate and keys are all very good. The Jen hasn’t been played for probably 5 years and was all in working order. When plugged in the power light comes on. It has been stored and covered for this time. However, I no longer have the equipment to test it out.
