“For sale I have a 1984 Korg EX-800 Polyphonic Rackmount Synthesizer. This is an analog synthesizer, with DCOs. (digitally controlled oscillators)

This is the rackmount version of the Poly 800 MK II, and it can run patches from either the Poly 800, or the EX-800 (MKII patches). A cool advantage the EX-800 has over the Poly 800′s is that you can flash the system code via SYSEX on the MIDI channel, unlike the Poly 800s that can only use the cassette waveform.

I acquired a Korg Poly 800 MKII and I don’t need two of the same thing, so that is why I am selling this one.

Everything works great. MIDI in and out works fantastically. The EX-800 is missig 3 plastic touch buttons, but they still work, you just need to replace the plastic tops. The switches work perfectly, though.

Trotz seiner Macken ist der Poly800 aufgrund der etwas ungewöhnlichen Struktur der Klangerzeugung ein interessanter Synthesizer, der auch heute noch von vielen “Elektronikern” gerne eingesetzt wird.

Klang(erzeugung)
Der Poly800 synthetisiert seine Sounds auf eine etwas ungewöhnliche Art und Weise:
Die zwei DCOs können wahlweise die Wellenformen Rechteck und Sägezahn erzeugen, wobei es bei beiden DCOs schonmal eine Besonderheit gibt: man kann vier unterschiedliche “Fusslagen” (einzeln, in Kombination oder alle Gemeinsam) aktivieren.
Die zweite Besonderheit: einen vollständigen Sägezahn erhält man nur, wenn man alle Fusslagen aktiviert – der Poly800 erzeugt ihn nämlich intern aus der Rechteckwellenform.
So lassen sich also klanglich recht interessante Zwischenwellenformen erzeugen.

Wenn beide DCOs aktiv sein sollen, muss man den Double-Mode aktivieren und halbiert damit die Polyphonie auf 4 Stimmen. Man wird dafür aber auch mit besonders fetten Klängen belohnt.

Die DCOs “hören” jeweils auf eine eigene Hüllkurve, eine dritte Hüllkurve ist für das Filter und den Noise-Generator zuständig.
Das analoge resonanzfähige Tiefpass-Filter wirkt leider nur auf alle Stimmen gemeinsam und klingt ohne Modifikation etwas unspektakulär. Einfache Filtersweeps sind aber kein Problem und klingen recht gut. Selbsoszillation ist nur mit der Modifikation möglich.
Ein einfacher LFO (vermutlich Sinus) kann Filter-Cutoff und / oder DCO-Pitch modulieren. Ein zuschaltbarer Chorus-Effekt gibt dem Sound noch etwas mehr Breite.

Alle Parameter arbeiten mit einer relativ groben Auflösung: Hüllkurvenparameter haben 32 Stufen, Modulationsparameter 16 Stufen, lediglich die Cutoff-Frequenz hat halbwegs sinnvolle 100 Stufen.

Trotz oder gerade wegen dieser Einschränkungen in der Klangerzeugung ist der Poly800 in der Lage einige interessante Sounds zu synthetisieren. Seine Spezialität sind Flächen- und Lead-Sounds, wobei ein externes Effektgerät zur Endveredleung eigentlich schon fast Pflicht ist.

Der Klang des Poly800 hat auf jeden Fall einen sehr eigenständigen Charakter und liegt je nach Sound zwischen analoger Wärme und digitaler Kühle.” Link

I used this disk to ruturn the EX800 to its factory preset settings, however the disk had patches which were much better than the factory presets, so in fact those are the ones currently loaded on the machine.

This is an early digital synth mixed with an analog filter, getting the best of both worlds: a stable oscillator with a warm filter.
Each preset can be completely changed by experimenting with the different parameter sections.
It’s an extremely easy synth to program and it’s a lot of fun to play.
You can set a sequence and just scroll through the different sounds and edit the sounds until you find the perfect sound.

This synthesizer is keyless, so you will need to hook up a MIDI controller or your computer interface to it to play the synth.
I’ve tested each sound and the different parameters and everything works as it should.
The only problem I’ve had with it is the number keys are a little sticky.
All the number buttons can be pressed but sometime you need to press it a couple times to get it.
The sequencer section was not tested because I didn’t need to use that part of the module, but I’m sure that works considering the rest of it works fine.” Link

“Up for bid is a vintage Korg EX-800 expander module. It is the same as the Korg Poly 800, minus the keyboard, and was intended for use with that model.

I am the original owner and have had this module since it was purchased around 1985. This module has been inspected and cleaned by a local technician. All knobs and switches are intact and working. The parameter button is a little sticky and needs to be held down for a couple of seconds, or pressed a couple of times, before accessing the numbered parameters for editing. A new battery was installed recently. New program/sequencer data was loaded from the data tape just a few days ago.

Included in the sale is the original owner’s manual, AC adapter, rack mount adapters, and program/sequencer data tape.” Link

I am not a keyboard player, [guitar player] but I have pro tools and try to use synth’s, so I plugged my miditech keyboard controller in to this and tried all the programs. didn’t change any settings but all the buttons and display work fine, and the pots are noise free. Plugged the audio outs into a pa and all the programs made sound, really liked the organ sounds. I do tube amp repair and the local music store asked me to check this out and put it on ebay” Link

“One of the last reasonably priced analog polys is the Korg EX800. It’s a synth module version of Korg’s Poly 800.

This EX800 is special as it has the vaunted “Moog Slayer” mod that you can see in many Youtube videos. Basically it gives full pot control over the cuttoff and resonance of the VCF breaking it out of the chains of programming its parameter control through a tedious menu selection. This mod really gives meat and punch to the leads, basses and sequences that you create.

The third knob of the mods is a control that allows you to FM the VCF with the output of DCO2. This can result in crazy sounds. Especially when using the numeric parameter control of DCO2.

Also wanted to mention that unlike some modded poly/ex 800s this one DOES NOT have an external input jack mod that some do although it would be easy enough to do and there is plenty of room in the back.

This EX800 is in perfect working condition and only has a few small scratches but is by no means beat up. New battery. Everything loads and saves fine. Some awesome programs in this one. Comes with power adaptor.” Link
