“Today I am auctioning off my E-MU Emulator III high-end sampler. It has 16 voices, all with analog CEM filters. It sounds great; it has the unique ability to make anything put it into it to sound fantastic. It also has a very nice sequencer built-in. This unit was arguably the pinnacle of sampling technology (before this you were always guaranteed a fairly lo-fi result, while samplers created after lacked the analog filters that give sounds a heft that digital filters cannot provide). I used this to turn monophonic synths into polyphonic monsters. You can take a Minimoog for example, sample it, and then you have a polyphonic analog 16 voice setup (the sampler has all of the stuff a very nice polyphonic synth has, like two envelopes, LFO, detuning, etc). Or, you can put a bass sound for 25 keys and make the other keys strings/brass/drums sounds. The sampler is very easy to use (this is coming from someone who does not have the patience for Ensoniq and Akai samplers) and the controls are setup very logically. It works very well but has one issue; for some reason, the stereo-outs sometimes cut out. This does not affect the individual outs, just the stereo outs. To remedy this you just move the sampler around a bit and the sound comes back. Sometimes it doesn’t happen for months, the sampler seems to just need to be set in one spot and left alone, haha. This issue is so minuscule that I’ve never bothered to have it looked at but I want the buyer to know what they’re getting. I will also include a SCSI Zip drive and some disks to hook up to the E3 allowing you to store your samples/sequences on a much larger format than the internal floppy disk/hard drive. ” Link

“Up for sale is a very rare E-mu Emax SE 12-bit digital sampler. The disk drive in this unit does NOT work. Please read below for full disclosure on the unit. The unit is functional otherwise.

These units are very sought after and can color your sound in ways that no other device can. The Emax is an incredible sampler for hiphop samples and drums. The filter on this unit is a beast. The variable sample rate is very useful and nothing can give drums the 12-bit crunch like E-mu (a la SP-1200/SP-12). The unit is in good cosmetic shape on the front and has some paint wear on the top and sides. Still looks great in the rack!!. Data sliders work 100% and are very smooth. (smoother then any unit I have used). LCD display still works great.

Unit is a verison 2 board which means you can upgrade it to have the SCSI interface mod. Check out the yahoo groups Emax forum for more info on this. (Highly recommended have another unit with this and it rocks).

********PLEASE READ************
There several things about this unit that must be disclosed.
1) The disk drive does NOT function. However I can assure you the unit is functional with a working floppy drive. I know this because I have tested the sampler with a working Emax floppy drive swapped into it. Again make no mistake, place a working disk drive or upgrade to SCSI interface and you will have a working Emax.
2) One of the 8 output voices is not working. Cannot remember which channel it is (channel 5 if memory serves). Cannot tell you what issue is. It very likely could be as easy as a simple capacitor that needs to be swapped out. I would highly recommend checking the yahoo groups Emax forum on this. The users there are very experienced at mods and maintenance of these great units. That said this is a minor problem and you can start using the unit right away and work around the issue. Its never been a problem for me from how I’ve used the unit. I doubt it will take much to get the voice fixed so it is up and running again.
3) Rack ear on right side is slightly bent. These is super minor. The rack ear comes off with 3 screws. I would fix this myself but I already spent a lot of time getting unit double boxed up. Please check photos to see. would be very easy to bend back. Unit still racks fine.
4) One of the data sliders is missing a cap. The slider is not damaged in any way and works perfect. You could try to find a replacement cap or substitute a different one if you wish.
5) Unit does not ship with an OS disk. However, you can quickly make your own for free with EMXP software. You need to get to know this software anyway if you want to get in deep with this unit.

Based on this I am selling unit AS IS. But rest assured you will be receiving what I am specifying.

Dont get me wrong. Aside from the voice issue with a functional drive in place this unit sounds INCREDIBLE and works great. If you are having a hard time tracking one of these down I would not pass this up. ” Link

“This is a used SP1200. I don’t know much about this unit. It appears to be one of the first models from what I can tell. I plugged it in and it powers up. All the light lit up for a moment and it read insert diskette on the display. All the buttons seem to function except for the one on channel 5 which is missing the button cover. There is cosmetic wear (peeling varnish, scratches) I don’t have any diskettes for it, so I could not test it any further. Some of the buttons stick (sometimes) but still respond and play sounds when hit, floppies play songs. It needs a good internal cleaning to be in optimal shape, but still plays wonderfully as-is. I’ve had this for a while and I am the second owner.

THIS IS A FINAL NUMBERED COLLECTOR’S ISSUE.

I originally didn’t want to sell this, but after I sold my limited MPC3000 and blue screen ASR10, I have to remember that gear is just gear.
(at least I’m telling myself that so I don’t break down. ha)

I used this primarily as a drum module that I would control via Ableton and a midi patchbay.

The third pad is really temperamental and works just fine sometimes, other times doesn’t. I think it’s just the spring that needs to be fixed because sometimes it doesn’t pop back up.

I’ve attached a couple pictures and the 3rd one shows the back panel that isn’t completely attached on the right. it’s like a quarter inch off set because of a dent.

I’m including 4 beatboxpros.com disks. One is the start up disk, then there is a drum set kit on 2 disks. The last disk is an AMAZING 808 sample set, directly sampled from the 808.

With the pitch control of each sample, you can really detune an 808 kick that is massive.

I would recommend getting it looked at, because the input ring is a little loose and I think as a result the level of the IN is really gain-y. The sample volume is really low with some gain. For my purposes it worked just fine though. sequencing drums on a 12-bit machine was the best thing I could’ve done for some of my mixes. ” Link

“This is a vintage E-MU EMAX HD SE. It is in working condition however the hard drive does not seem to save the banks anymore. Can load one floppy at a time to use the sounds from them. The power connector is loose on the back as shown in the photo, does not effect anything and could be replaced easily. The floppy drive sometimes needs assistance to get a floppy out. Master floppy and all backups included as well as some blank floppies. The SE came off next to the HD after removing a sticker. Leaving the employees must wash hands sticker on and swirls. “Ok we buy test equipment but every once in a while we end up with instruments. This keyboard was apparently the cats meow in its day, I guess one of the most expensive units out there. I plugged it in and it tells me the firmware is 2.0 it goes through a series of test checking the SCSI and then the Floppy which I do not have an then it goes back to the SCSI checking, so yes it powers up but since I cannot get anything past the unit checking the floppy I assume it works but cannot guarantee it. It seems like it works but I cannot tell. ” Link

Das Display ist unbeschädigt und leuchtet wie am ersten Tag.
Leider fehlt am Diskettenlaufwerk die Abdeckung (siehe Bild).
Kann mir nicht erklären was damit passiert ist, da ich das Gerät in diesem Zustand selbst erworben habe.

Being the SE version you have access to synthesizer features such as ADSR, Filter and yes…resonance.

Capable of huge sweeps, pads, basses, those awesome 1980s drum sounds etc.

Similar to the classic SP1200 in sound very warm, gritty and unique.

Unit has been powered up and tested. All keys work as they should.

Floppy drive needs to be replaced. It works sometimes and I did load the OS and a samples.

It is easy to replace and only requires 10-20 minutes.

“I am the second owner of this machine and I bought it in 1984. I used it in a home studio setting for about 8 years and then put it away, where it’s sat unused for the last two decades.This item includes its original manual and will ship in its original packaging. In excellent condition, everything works as it should and cosmetically it looks great. All the original buttons and pots are present and even the metal casing underneath is clean. I tested it and the only flaw I can find is that the mono “Mix out” jack cuts in and out when the phone plug into it is jiggled. If it’s used in an environment where it’s not subject to vibration or movement, that shouldn’t be an issue. Alternatively, you can use the individual outputs for each drum sound to bypass the “Mix out” which will also allow you to do your stereo panning the way you want.” Link

Zustand:

Laut Vorbesitzer funktioniert alles (gekauft vor ca. 2 Jahren), habe aber lediglich nur die Disketten-Library genutzt. Das bedeutet ich kann nicht sagen ob wirklich alle Funktionen zu 100% gegeben sind, das Gerät wird deshalb als defekt angeboten. Das Programieren, Nutzen des Samplers und Wälzen der Bedienungsanleitung war mir mit diesem Dino immer zu umständlich.
Der Emulator lädt die Disketten und ist sofort spielbereit.
Die Räder für Modulation und Pitch-Bend funktionieren einwandfrei.
Der Lautstärkeregler (Mix Out Volume) funktioniert nur voll aufgedreht, leiser regeln führt zu Tonausfall
Display ist bei direktem Blick von oben nur schwer ablesbar, bei einem Blickwinkel leicht schräg von unten ist alles klar zu lesen
Optischer Zustand siehe XXL-Fotos

Im Lieferumfang ist der Emulator II, Bedienungsanleitung auf Deutsch und Englisch, Netzkabel und eine umfangreiche 157x Disketten Sound-Library

Die Disketten sind nicht die originalen von E-mu, einige aber wahrscheinlich 1:1 Kopien, viele der Disketten sind vom Vorbesitzer selbst erstellt
Zahl mit X beschreibt die Anzahl der Soundbänke pro Diskette (z.B. Oberheim Strings 1x = eine Soundbank/Sound ohne weitere Variationen)
Ich habe alle geladen und bei einigen wenigen Sounds gibt es Nebengeräusche wie in der Liste vermerkt (siehe Fotos)” Link

The unit is in good condition for the age, with a few marks on the casing as is common with instruments of this age, particulary on the casing above the floppy disk drive (as can be seen in the pictures). The pitch and modulation wheels are sunk into the casing along with the disk drive. These are loose inside the casing, and move around quite a bit.

The unit powers up but the display repeats the screen ‘EMU-SYSTEMS INC, CHECKING SCSI’ and runs through the numbers 1 – 7. We have not tried this with a boot disk, as the disk drive is loose in the casing as previously mentioned, and we do not wish to casue any further damage to the machine.

This unit is sold as a faulty unit for spares or repair. The plate on the rear reads:
