“Up for sale is a very rare E-mu Emax SE 12-bit digital sampler. The disk drive in this unit does NOT work. Please read below for full disclosure on the unit. The unit is functional otherwise.
These units are very sought after and can color your sound in ways that no other device can. The Emax is an incredible sampler for hiphop samples and drums. The filter on this unit is a beast. The variable sample rate is very useful and nothing can give drums the 12-bit crunch like E-mu (a la SP-1200/SP-12). The unit is in good cosmetic shape on the front and has some paint wear on the top and sides. Still looks great in the rack!!. Data sliders work 100% and are very smooth. (smoother then any unit I have used). LCD display still works great.
Unit is a verison 2 board which means you can upgrade it to have the SCSI interface mod. Check out the yahoo groups Emax forum for more info on this. (Highly recommended have another unit with this and it rocks).
********PLEASE READ************
There several things about this unit that must be disclosed.
1) The disk drive does NOT function. However I can assure you the unit is functional with a working floppy drive. I know this because I have tested the sampler with a working Emax floppy drive swapped into it. Again make no mistake, place a working disk drive or upgrade to SCSI interface and you will have a working Emax.
2) One of the 8 output voices is not working. Cannot remember which channel it is (channel 5 if memory serves). Cannot tell you what issue is. It very likely could be as easy as a simple capacitor that needs to be swapped out. I would highly recommend checking the yahoo groups Emax forum on this. The users there are very experienced at mods and maintenance of these great units. That said this is a minor problem and you can start using the unit right away and work around the issue. Its never been a problem for me from how I’ve used the unit. I doubt it will take much to get the voice fixed so it is up and running again.
3) Rack ear on right side is slightly bent. These is super minor. The rack ear comes off with 3 screws. I would fix this myself but I already spent a lot of time getting unit double boxed up. Please check photos to see. would be very easy to bend back. Unit still racks fine.
4) One of the data sliders is missing a cap. The slider is not damaged in any way and works perfect. You could try to find a replacement cap or substitute a different one if you wish.
5) Unit does not ship with an OS disk. However, you can quickly make your own for free with EMXP software. You need to get to know this software anyway if you want to get in deep with this unit.
Based on this I am selling unit AS IS. But rest assured you will be receiving what I am specifying.
Dont get me wrong. Aside from the voice issue with a functional drive in place this unit sounds INCREDIBLE and works great. If you are having a hard time tracking one of these down I would not pass this up. ” Link

“Hey guys, you’re bidding on a 100% functional, EMU EMAX digital sampler. Bring on the 80′s!! It powers on just fine, but needs a good once over to make sure it’s good to go. Another eBay auction had one of these with a $1000 reserve… granted, that was for serial #001, which this one is not. Check the pictures… it has some signs of wear, but it’s 100% functional!!!” Link
“This is in mint condition and comes in its own red velvet case and is in perfect working order. This is the harder to find EMAX I model.
This machine sound great and is especially good on drums, which is why its very similar in sound to the SP1200 drum machine. Believe me its close as I have both.
It samples in 12 bit resolution for that classic EMU sound. It just sounds soooooo goooood.” Link
“This is a used Emu Emax Se Hd keyboard in good condition. Fully functional. Sorry no discs or manual. Has a very heavy duty hard case included. The foam is deteriorating though. some one may need to refoam it. I will pack kb in plastic” Link
“This is a vintage E-MU EMAX HD SE. It is in working condition however the hard drive does not seem to save the banks anymore. Can load one floppy at a time to use the sounds from them. The power connector is loose on the back as shown in the photo, does not effect anything and could be replaced easily. The floppy drive sometimes needs assistance to get a floppy out. Master floppy and all backups included as well as some blank floppies. The SE came off next to the HD after removing a sticker. Leaving the employees must wash hands sticker on and swirls. I always had fun playing just don’t have time anymore.” Link
“Emu Emax – 12 Bit Sampler.
Lieferumfang: Kaltstromkabel + 20 Disketten + Deutsche Bedienungsanleitung
Das Gerät kann gern in Köln auch abgeholt werden, nähe Barbarossaplatz.” Link
“Classic 12bit warm REAL analog filter. This sampler sounds great and not thin at the least.
Being the SE version you have access to synthesizer features such as ADSR, Filter and yes…resonance.
Capable of huge sweeps, pads, basses, those awesome 1980s drum sounds etc.
Similar to the classic SP1200 in sound very warm, gritty and unique.
Unit has been powered up and tested. All keys work as they should.
Floppy drive needs to be replaced. It works sometimes and I did load the OS and a samples.
It is easy to replace and only requires 10-20 minutes.
Comes with power cable and OS floppy + floppies with samples.” Link
“The auction is for an E-Mu eMax synth. This was purchased from an estate. It does not come with an operating disc. When turned on it asks for an operating system. That is as far as I am able to test it.” Link
“This is a vintage keyboard from “E-MU Systems Inc.”, and is the ‘Emax’ model. It powers on and shows the EMU opening screen, and then ask for a disc, which I do not have and have no way to test it further, and it is sold as is. It is in nice condition, with some finish type wear on the top, with some scratches and light type edge wear on the sides.” Link
“For your consideration is the E-Mu Emax SE.
The unit has been gently used and shows almost no cosmetic wear(see pics).
The original disc drive has been replaced with a newer, more sturdy one.
A collection of over 100 sample discs is included.
This listing includes the E-Mu Emax SE, the orignal box, rack ears and manuals, as well as the disc collection.
Feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you’re in the area and would like to test it out, please leave your phone number.
Please check my other listings for more rare synth gear and effects. ” Link

” Up for auction is an ORIGINAL EMU EMAX. I’ve tested it with a few discs by plugging it into a MIDI keyboard and everything seems to be in great shape.
This is the classic rare Emax that was used by so many musicians. If you are looking at this then you probably have an idea as to what it is.
This synth comes with about 35 floppy discs. 20 of the discs appear to be from the Emax standard diskette catalog. The other discs have handwriting on them and appear to be made by the original owner.
It also comes with the original manual! The EMU is in very good shape for it’s age.” Link

“You are looking at an original E-MU Systems Emax rack sampler. This is 12 bit digital sampler with an all analog filtering system. These units possess the same sample engine and filters as the coveted SP1200. They were in fact designed to compliment each other in modern midi studios of the 80′s and 90′s. The main distinguishing factor between this and the SP are that these have no internal sequencer. Instead, much more sample time and variable sample rates. Also the filter is fully variable and assignable rather than the hardwired output based filter system on the SP.
The unit itself is in very good condition cosmetically, though it’s missing the top cap of the on/off button and the flip down lid on the floppy drive. It appears to function correctly as well, though I lack the knowledge to test all of it’s routing and midi capabilities. Included is a very nice set of original E-MU sample disks as well as other third party Emax sound sets saved to floppy disks.” Link

“Up for auction is a vintage EMU Emax sampler Rack serial # 001. This synth comes with one floppy disk that has some orchestral sounds to get you started. It is in near perfect conditon phisically and only has a couple minor scratches on the case. All functions work perfectly and loads samples fine. The one problem I did find is there is a large pop when this sucker is powered on. I am not sure what the deal is- I have seen people sell power supplies for these on ebay before so maybe this is an issue with these machines. Overall this synth is physically awesome. You can tell that this synth is still possibly in the prototype stage due to the strange plastic stickers that mark the individual outputs on the back. I was given this synth by the original owner and it has been racked its entire life in a smoke free studio. This auction will include the synth, a power cable and one disk.” Link
“I have the OS files and pdf manual on CD. The unit contains a hard drive with sound files on it. Sound files are available here on ebay for $15. Photos are from the web. My unit is in similar cosmetic condition. This unit starts up and loads OS and performing all functions. The original 20 MBvhard drive is a bit noisy since its over 20 years old but I’m sure you can image the drive contents to a larger hard drive or use the OS files provided on the CD.” Link
“This particular unit is in Wonderful Physical Shape as you can see, and Functions Completely as it should. Included will be : The Keyboard, Power Cord, (2) Boxes of Disks (11 Disks in Each Box) Which have Samples and Sequences for you to Play with, Keep, Eliminate, and or Re-write, + The Owners Manual (In PDF Form).” Link

Up for sale is a classic E-MU Systems EMAX SE (Synthesis Enhanced). I purchased this from the original owner to acquire the large sample library that came with it, but I have an EMAX II, and do not need this cool guy.
The keyboard is in stellar condition, and everything runs as it should with the exception of the G2 key, which seemed to work intermittently. However, there were no issues when working with a MIDI connection. All samples loaded, all programs worked, and the new disk drive was installed by the previous owner, who worked for E-MU and Ensoniq, in 2010.
The 3rd and 4th outputs have been tested and work as an insert send and return — read: awesome.
The samples range from house to hip-hop to movie samples (the Pee-Wee disk is a personal favorite). There are 2 copies of the OS in the lot. I will be selling the Development Disk separately, if you are interested, see my other auctions. ” Link

This is my Emu-Systems EMAX I SE HD retro keyboard. I am not a pawn shop or a guy that stumbled across this board, this is my personal board that I have had for over 20 years. I hate to sell my gear but I can only use so many boards, plus my EMAX II can be used if I ever need to revisit these sounds. I have thought about selling this board for over a year now, and now it is time. This is a very rare version of the board, It has the SE (spectrum interpolation digital synthesis), plus the SCSI and 20MB internal Hard Disk that the system will boot off of, no floppy needed for boot. I have had this board since 1990 when I bought it off a Studio in Hollywood. I used it in a smoke free Studio till 1997 where I then stored it till about month ago. I also have an Emax II Turbo that accepts most of the library so the disks that come with this board are limited, but you do get the banks on the HD, Some of which are my own patches for older songs, use them delete them, whatever you want. So, now the issues. I am not going to tell you that this 25 year old sampler is perfect. I played with it for about a week and this is what I found. The Sliders, both Volume and Value work fine, But when you slide them all the way down to stop, they go to full value, so you have to stop them at about 1/4 inch from the full stop bottom, you can still access all data from the value slider. Then there is the Display, This one has a mind of it’s own, sometimes it works perfect, sometimes it takes about a minute or so to appear, sometimes if you rub the screen when it is off, you get some Japanese looking characters, then it is fine, and sometimes it comes on fine, disappears then comes back on, very weird. I found that the more I used the board the better the Display and Function-ability of the board work altogether. I did not get in depth with a lot of the tweaking that you can do on this board but everything that I did worked fine. A very fun user friendly board, a few little issues that might need to be addressed if they persist, but over all, in pretty darn good condition.” Link
“You are bidding on an Emu Emax sampler / synthesizer. I’ve powered it on and loaded a few discs, plugged in headphones and played it a little, and it seems to work fine. It comes with about 100 floppy discs with samples on them. There is a chip on one of the keys, as you can see in the pictures. I am selling it guaranteed not to be DOA. ” Link

This is an Emu Emax SE that was working up until about a week ago, and now it won’t power up. I’ve seen some auctions for power supply units that cost around $30 or so, but can’t guarantee that’s exactly what’s wrong with it.
This unit was owned by a team of music producers who made soundtracks for 80′s movies with it. They fitted it with a switch unit that is shown in a picture, and this did something to isolate sounds for individual outs?? I’m not sure because I never used the feature, but I suppose it could be considered an upgrade. Perhaps someone out there with more knowledge of this sort of thing will know more than I do.
Prior to it going out everything was fine. The disk drive was a bit finicky, but those can also be replaced. Unit is sold as-is due to its age and faulty functioning.” Link
“The keyboard is in fair physical condition with scuffs, scratches, decals flaking off and one chipped key. The unit powers up” Link
“Emax Sampler (Keyboard) aus den späten 1980 er Jahren mit zahlreichen Sounddisketten. Display defekt (schwer leserlich, Soundbearbeitung daher kaum möglich). Sounds lassen sich von den Disketten aber hochladen.” Link
“This auction is for a Emu Emax HD SE. This is the one that has the analog filters and sounds nice. These are also getting harder to find. I’ll include a box of about 55 disks so you can get started right away with the sampler.
Unit works flawlessly 100% and the internal harddrive works fine too.” Link
“This is the SE upgraded Emax sampling keyboard with digitals effects and further sample, pitch, in depth sound manipulation features that the upgrade allowed at the time. 8 outputs which filters can be applied to like the Emu SP1200 drum machines. Also sampling sounds is in 12 BIT.
It’s in great condition with only minor marks, also keys c1-c2 are marked to allow easier playing/triggering of sounds. LCD screen is nice and bright, just like when it was first used.
Includes a +50 disk libary of sound diskettes, including original factory disks aswell. Also manuals can be downloaded from emulatorarchive.com, but this keyboard is too easy to use as it’s even got a mini manual printed on the actual case.” Link
“his is the same engine as the EMU SP1200, but with a lot more features. We own the SP1200, EII and EIII, and the Emax 1 is the warmest and dirtyest of all of them. You can get the coolest textures from the Emax 1. Something that cannot be done with any of the other Emu samplers due to the analog filters and adjustable sampling rate. If you want dirt and grime and character in your beats and tones, then you have found it with the Emax 1. Everything that you sample just sounds beautiful with this unit. You can really make some snappy snares and growling bass lines with this thing. Kicks sound huge and with huge bottom end. Artists tend to use the Emax 1 to process their sounds and then load them in their DAW, etc. Software can’t touch the organic dirt of the Emax 1, period.
Two common problems that plague the Emax 1 is that the floppy drives go bad, and the lack of an OS disk or the wrong one. This unit’s disk drive is working fine and we are including an OS disk. Everything works as it should. Companies like Kid Nepro and NorthStar are still selling samples on floppies for the Emax 1. The analog filters on these Emax one’s are thick and sick. The filters are so dark and dirty. No thin sounding VST can sound this way. If you’re looking for that darker Aphex Twin, or a fan of dirty beats or thick lush chords and leads, than this unit would be perfect for you. If you’re into ambient, drone, noise and experimental music you would love this board also. The LCD works fine, all the buttons and sliders are fine. All the keys work, and the floppy drives loads and saves samples and sequences. The unit does have scratches on the body like all Emax 1′s do. Also part of the clear coat has seen better days on the face. But this is only cosmetic. When you’re on stage or in your studio rendering tones and loops that no software can touch, then clear coat isn’t really gonna matter. But this is only cosmetic and not a functional issue. Scratches do not effect the sound and performance of this unit . There is one missing slider knob cap that EPR sells for $5 and they are in stock. And you can use the unit fine wtihout it. Regarding the clear coat…. a person can just rub it off with their finger and another coat underneath seems to be coming through. It’s cosmetic as we said, and has nothing to do how the unit performs. ” Link

“Emu Emax HD sampling keyboard. The “HD” in the model name stands for hard drive — it has an internal hard AND the standard floppy drive. Really nice piece of gear. I bought it from a studio in LA about a year ago and have never used it but twice. The volume fader cap was missing when I bought it, but this doesn’t affect the functionality of the keyboard and could easily be replaced.” Link

The unit attempts to load the system software, but not able to do that. I opened it, I think, the hard drive does not work, because it does not make any noise. I don’t have any disks for it. The sliders on the front works, just a plastic caps are missing.
