The unit is in good condition for the age, with a few marks on the casing as is common with instruments of this age, particulary on the casing above the floppy disk drive (as can be seen in the pictures). The pitch and modulation wheels are sunk into the casing along with the disk drive. These are loose inside the casing, and move around quite a bit.
The unit powers up but the display repeats the screen ‘EMU-SYSTEMS INC, CHECKING SCSI’ and runs through the numbers 1 – 7. We have not tried this with a boot disk, as the disk drive is loose in the casing as previously mentioned, and we do not wish to casue any further damage to the machine.
This unit is sold as a faulty unit for spares or repair. The plate on the rear reads:

“My starting bid price is a great deal and much cheaper than what I paid ($264). There’s nothing wrong with it that I could find. It has a blue LED screen and seems to work fine from my limited use. It boots fine every time and I never had a problem loading sounds from over 60 Emax II disks and I sampled the ringer on my phone by plugging in a microphone and it played on the keyboard with no problem. (I had never used a sampler before because I’m a more of a drummer) but, a friend of mine told me that this is what Depeche Mode used and I’m a big fan so I thought that I could make their music after I had been watching a guy on YouTube. His name is dx5. google him: dx5 depeche mode and you’ll see what I’m talking about. He uses the Emax 2 keyboard in many of his latest updated versions of Depeche cover songs.
Yes, the huge collection of disks is included (I tested almost all and discovered that about 75 disks or so are formatted for the Emax II) And the remaining few hundred are formatted for either the Emax 1000 or Akai samplers, which can be reformatted. “Up for sale today is a good looking Emax II Synthesizer. I took this in on trade and really know nothing about a synth type keyboard. I turned the power on in the back and the green screen displays “Please Insert Disc!” Unfortunately I do not have a disc to insert, so I will be selling the Keyboard as-is. They guy that I got it from said it worked fine but he lost the disc sets in a studio move and never bothered to get more. He upgraded to all new equipment in the move, so he really didnt see the need. Im not sure if he was truthful or not, but it does power on and a couple of the lights light up, including one on the front of the floppy drive. If you have any test that you would like for me to run, feel free to let me know what they are, and Ill be happy to do so. “I have an Emu Emax II rack mount with 8MB RAM and a HUGE library on Syquest REmoveable media. Comes with Emax II, Syquest Hard Drive and 9 HD cartridges full of sounds. If you’ve been looking to get this sampler, you could not ask for a better unit. It is in very good condition. It functions perfectly, and the LCD is still adequately bright. There are very few signs of age and wear with minimal scratches.on the face or rack ears. THis item has been in my posession for 15 years during which time I took exceptionally good care of it, and have never had any problems. The LCD backlight was replaced 5 years ago, so you should get another 5 years plus before possibly needing to replace the bulb for maximum readability. But it is still legible without the light too.
The library includes factory sounds, and lots of 3rd party and original samples from years of use. You will be very satisfied with the breadth and quality of the sounds. I hooked up a Iomega Zip Drive and the sampler formatted the zip disk perfectly.
There are no missing or broken keys and or buttons. Unit has a few scrapes and scuffs due to its age but nothing significant.
This is one of the easiest samplers to use even without a manual.

“E-mu Emax II Keyboard mit interner Festplatte und Synthax Syndrive mit einem SyQest 44 MB Wechselplatten-Laufwerk + 5 Medien + Disketten
Bei dem hier angebotenem Emax II handelt es sich um die Keyboardversion, Modell 2212 mit 2 MB und Stereosampling.
Er befindet sich in einem gebrauchten, aber gutem Zustand. D.h., nicht abgerockt und ranzig, sondern durchaus vorzeigbar.
Die einzigen Makel, die mir einfallen sind a) eine kleine “Macke” an der rechten Gehäuseseite (entstand beim Versand, als ich ihn mir kaufte und zuschicken ließ) und b) die weißen Tasten der rechten 1-2 Oktaven sind etwas vergilbt. Dieser Gilb entstand, weil das Gerät beim Vorbesitzer nicht abgedeckt herumstand und die betroffenen Tasten längere Zeit stärkerer Sonnenlichteinstrahlung ausgesetzt waren.Es handelt sich nicht um Nikotinbelag! (beides s. Bild 5)
Technisch sind mir keine Fehler bekannt. Das Floppy-Laufwerk funktioniert tadellos (liest, schreibt, formatiert), das Display funktioniert ebenfalls noch, nur die Beleuchtung ist nicht mehr ganz so hell wie sie mal war (passende Leuchtfolie ist aber noch erhältlich), sämtliche Bedienelemente (Fader, Taster) sprechen einwandfrei an.
Die interne Festplatte ist alt und – was typisch ist für alte SCSI Platten – sehr laut. Sie ließ sich problemlos formatieren, aber ich empfehle sie wegen des Lärms und der Wärmeentwicklung im Gehäuse nicht zu verwenden (habe sie aus diesen Gründen lange Zeit vom Netzteil getrennt und erst jetzt zum Verkauf wieder angeschlossen). Das SyQuest Laufwerk ist auch nicht gerade leise, aber sehr robust und zuverlässig und scheint durchaus bühnentauglich zu sein. Für zu Hause/Studio würde ich ein SyQuest Easy Drive empfehlen. Die 5 beigelegten 44 MB Cartridges sind bis auf eine randvoll mit Sounds.
Zum Lieferumfang gehören außerdem ca. 50 Disketten mit div. Soundbänken, eine Disk mit dem letzten OS 2.14, zwei Kaltgerätekabel, ein SCSI Kabel (50 Pol zu 25 Pol) und das Handbuch als PDF auf CD.
Der Emax II ist (wie sein Vorgänger der Emax “1″ und grundsätzlich alle E-mu Sampler) ein sehr gut klingendes Instrument, halb Sampler, halb Synthesizer, warmer, druckvoller Sound und kinderleicht zu bedienen. Ein Klassiker, der immer noch eine große Fangemeinde hat.
Ich verkaufe ihn nur umständehalber und weil ich noch einen habe.

Sowohl der Emu Emax-2 Rack-Sampler als auch das Keyboard ist mittlerweile ein Sammlerstück.
Technisch sind beide im TOP-Zustand.
Ich habe 2 von diesen tollen Samplern und einer muss nun gehen!
Ich verkaufe ihn nur, weil ich mir einen EMU Platinum mit hunderttausend Ausgängen zugelegt habe und deshalb mein bisheriges Samplerrack etwas “ausmiste”.
Die Keyboardversion ist mit 4 MB ausgebaut. Eine Festplatte 40MB ist auch noch drin. Tastatur und Knöpfe funktionieren mängelfrei!
Die Rackversion (derzeit gelegentlich noch im Betrieb) als Turbo mit 8 MB
Allerdings! Ich möchte hier eigentlich nur die 4MB-Version verkaufen.
Wer also den Racksampler will muss 2-3 Tage warten, denn dann muss ich intern noch die Platinen austauschen.
Mitgeliefert werden etliche Boxen mit Sound-Disketten – …ich hoffe, die funktionieren noch alle.
Ich habe diese Sounds aber auch noch auf jeder Menge 4 und 8MB Bänke. Die kann ich natürlich gerne auch auf ZIP oder JAZ kopieren und mitgeben.
Ist zwar etwas zeitaufwendig, (…früher hatte man die noch!) aber gegen ein kleines Trinkgeld mach ich das dann gerne.
DER EMAX II war der erste 16 Bit EMU-URSAMPLER (heute KULT) mit unerreicht fetten Filtern und Sounds.
Viele Sounds klingen dort wesentlich besser, als die umgemodelten und in neue Formate transformierten Sounds in den EMU-E III Nachfolgern, Manche Filter Sweep Sounds sind einfach so nicht mehr zu kriegen.
Voll Multimodefähig und vor allem: Mit 8 hochwertigen symmetrischen analogen Ausgängen!
Mittlerweile ein Kultgerät – (siehe auch Depeche Mode u.v.a.!)
Der EMAX II ist ein zwar schon etwas in die Jahre gekommener Sampler mit 16Bit aber er wird von mir im Studio immer noch sehr gerne benutzt da er im Vergleich zu z.B. Akai-Samplern und selbst zu den EMU Nachfolgern wesentlich einfacher zu bedienen ist und sehr schnell gute Ergebnisse bringt – besonders im Midistudio beim komponieren und arrangieren.
Wenn man z.B. mal eben schnell ein Drumloop von einer Sample-CD braucht oder auch für das schnelle Sampeln von akustischen Instrumenten und vieles mehr hat man mit etwas Übung ruck zuck in zwei Minuten ein brauchbares Sample zur Hand und kann dies dann einem der 8 Ausgänge separat zuordnen und am Keyboard spielen. Dafür ist die Keyboardversion einfach unschlagbar!” Link
