“This is the vintage ‘DMX’ model programmable digital drum machine from “Oberheim”. The unit powers right on, and I really do not have a way to fully test the unit, and it is sold as is. When turned on, the screen reads ‘Oberheim Dmx, Press < > To Empty’, and sometimes with show an Internal Error message. The unit is in nice condition, with some tiny type scratches on the front, and the main display has only a couple of small scratches. 6 of the slide control tips aren’t original, and still slide nice and smoothly. The wood sides are nice and clean, and the edges are clean as well. I have taken a number of photos, and show a photo of the inside as well. Measures 18″ by 12″, and stands 5″ high at the back.” Link

“Now you can play every realistic, digitally-sampled Oberheim drum sound via your MIDI keyboard (Yamaha KX88), stand-alone sequencer (Roland MSQ-700) or both (see J.L. Cooper). You can also use it to save valuable voice-allocation space on your Fairlight or Synclavier! Need to tune the snare? No problem, just pop open the hood and turn the little gear-shaped trimmer on top of the corresponding circuit board! You will never again need to hire cocky professional drummers or cabasa players after you own this puppy.” Link

“This is a November 23, 1983 DMX Drum Machine. I am the original owner and have the original Packing Inspection Report that shows the machine was inspected and shipped on November 23, 1983. Recently serviced and in prime working condition with new battery.
Not only is this an original machine in near mint condition, and with the original stock sounds, It has 8 additional cards that allow you to swap out the original sounds for custom sounds by Drumware. Also included are a couple of personal sounds that I sent them for sampling and E-Promming… One of which is a custom snare that I recorded while at Rumbo Studio A in LA. The studio had a 20 foot ceiling and we recorded the room mics at a about a height of 15 feet. Very crisp sounding chip.
PLUS, this machine has been customized with a stereo headphone jack and an output for a custom snake that takes all of the individual outputs of the drum and puts them in one cable. It is the blue connector on the back in the photo. I do not have the snake, but I’m sure it would be easy enough to find or build one.
Lastly, in addition to the stock sound chips, I have 20+ chips of various kicks, snares, toms, percussion and a noise burst.” Link

“You are bidding on a Oberhiem DMX Drum Machine with original owners manual & factory sequences tape. We are selling this for my Dad. He is the original owner. This item work just as it should when it was stored. When you turn on the power button it will display the message Memory full, data may be bad, press<> to empty. We did just that but after you power it off and back on. It will display the same message. We have the factory tape which you can see in pic 4 to reload the factory sequences. You can also see in pic 3 it has some paint specks on it. We think it should clean off but will leave that to the new owner.” Link

” This auction is for my early ’80s Oberheim DMX drum machine. This came as part of a studio I bought in ’91. I record bands, so never really used it, although it did work well. Last time I tried using it, the sequencer wasn’t working and one of the buttons for the bass drum had come off. I removed the bolts that held in the board for the volume sliders and sound trigger buttons and stored the parts away for safety……. 10 years latter, I thought they were all in the box with the main part of the machine, but opened it recently to discover they were missing. I have searched in my usual storage locations and can’t find them anywhere.

I have no idea how easy this would be to fix, so is being sold for parts. At some point someone added DIN sockets on the rear panel for MIDI. I see no evidence that they ever got beyond adding the sockets, but can’t say for certain. ” Link

“I purchased this unit from the original owner and only used it in my home studio – it is in good working condition. It comes with a power cord and and a PDF of the Operation Manual on CD.

This unit has very few superficial scratches and blemishes on the outside of the case – except for the bottom panel of the unit, where there are lots of scratches – but for a unit its age, it’s in great shape.

This unit also has some buttons (approximately 4 or 5) that can be “sticky” when pressed/played, but everything still works. I was told these buttons need cleaning from time to time, which I believe have never been done in it’s 30 years. There’s a place in California that specializes on all things DMX, and I was going to have it serviced there a couple years ago, but I just never got around to it.

This place also does MIDI conversions and other cool stuff to the DMX – lots of people are doing this to their machines now to sync with their other gear. I preferred using the internal “feel” the DMX provides, create the beats and patterns on the unit itself, then sample and create loops in my DAW. If you’re interested in any kind of service for the DMX, you may want to reach out to Paul White at: Electrongate

This IS a Collector’s Item

I’m selling this unit simply because I’m downsizing my musical equipment collection – my close friends call my home studio a museum! I’ve been doing music for almost 30 years, and I’ve accumulated a lot of great stuff. But now as retirement age is looming on the horizon, I’ve decided to begin the process of reducing the amount of treasured pieces I own. I will be posting a lot of my vintage gear in the next few weeks, so please check out my other items – you might find something you like!

Keep Hardware Alive

Move faders. Push buttons. Insert cables. Record your songs with this inspiring machine. Touch the gear – and touch the lives of friends and family with your musical creations using this tool. Buy it. Try it. If it’s not for you, then sell it.” Link

“Up for auction is a vintage Oberheim DMX Programmable Digital Drum Machine, SN B34608. It’s in good condition for its age. Internally it appears untouched and original. The wood sides have several screw holes that were added over the years to accommodate various mounting positions, but nothing that affects operation. I was able to do several basic checks and everything responded as expected. Switches and sliders are intact, but one of the sliders is missing the plastic cap.” Link

Up for auction is a Oberheim DMX programmable drum machine.

It’s in great working and cosmetic condition.

It’s easy to use. It took me a minute to figure out how to use the record function. But if you need help just email me.

The cymbal button sounds have been modified. They make a sound similar to a tom tom, but are not the same as the other tom’s. I do not know how to change it back.” Link

“This is part of an Oberheim system I am selling for a friend. You will find the OB-8 and DSX in other auctions. The three made up a system that many used back in the day. This is still a great drum machine. It’s in great cosmetic shape and all the buttons and display work fine. There are no beats programmed so that part is up to you. It comes with two drum cards that I assume are for changing all the sounds in the machine, much like modern “expansion” cards. I have not tested them so they are sold with no guarantees.” Link

“These are 9 extra PROMs for the Oberheim DX or DMX drum machine. They are in “like new” condition and never have been inserted into the equipment. “The Oberheim DMX was a programmable, digital drum machine introduced in 1981, which, helped to shape the sound of popular music during the 1980s.

DMX, Oberheim @ 22 June 2010, “No Comments”

“Note that this a DMX, not a DX. The main difference (and the reason why the DMX is a classic, while the DX isn’t) is that there’s a Curtis analogue filter for EVERY sample card (the cards fill the left half of the DMX’s innards, see pics). This rounds off the punchy 12-bit samples and, well, makes it sound the way it does. Which is punchy as hell. Like i say, have another listen to Blue Monday. There are individual outs for each sound, too, so recording options are super-flexible (e.g., getting a dedicated reverb on the snare).

The machine is in great condition: fully working, recently serviced with a new battery for the song and pattern memory. Cosmetically, there are some light scratches and scuffs commensurate with age, but nothing glaring. The original owner’s postcode is etched onto the unit near the power switch. I’m the third owner, the second was Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. The first was none other than Mark King of Level 42! The only reason I mention this is that it’s been in the hands of a professional musician, then a professional studio until it got to me, which means that it’s been regularly serviced and well looked after. Oh, and note the silver thumb screws on the front of the case – these mean you can get the case open quickly to tune the sample pitches (these have a broad range, really useful for getting variety of sounds).” Link

“This is a great opportunity to acquire an Oberheim DMX in amazing, almost mint condition! It is in such gorgeous shape that you would think you were back in the early 80′s again…I have not seen too many others this clean since that time period. I really hope the pictures do it justice. Though you could sample it, nothing sounds quite like the original. This particular unit was lightly used in a smoke-free studio setting and covered when not in use. This DMX works flawlessly including it’s MIDI as well as all buttons, volume knobs and most importantly those classic fat, punchy sounds that only Oberheim can provide. It is ready to be used the minute you receive it. The MIDI on this unit is revision 4.01. Because the unit was mostly used through MIDI triggering and only occasional “on panel” programming, the battery was removed to avoid potential battery acid issues. Therefore the unit does not hold sequences in memory, however the buyer could install a battery if this is desired. Otherwise you can load and save patterns through the cassette port using DAW software (such as ProTools) which I have been able to do without any difficulty. Power cable included.” Link

“he DMX is a cool EProm based drum machine that sounds a little like a Linn or a Drum Tracks. Old school drums at your fingertips.

This DMX is in great cosmetic condition. It powers up but the screen doesn’t light up. It has all its Eproms and chips. It would make a good project or parts unit. It uses a standard IEC power cable (not included).” Link

“This rare piece of analogue history was all the talk of the 80s. Sure, everyone loved the TR 808 and other TR drum machines and when the MPC lynn drum machine hit the scene in 1989 that was all the rage but this one quietly made its mark on the 80s with consistent chit chat amongst die hard 80s lovers. This thing sounds totally awesome as I have heard it on many famous records from that era and it is rounded and beautifully rich.

This one for some unknown reason doesn’t appear to make any sound. It fires up perfectly well but makes no sound so I’m guessing I’m doing something wrong which I don’t understand. However, whether I’m doing something wrong or whether this thing does actually have a fault, you are bidding on the basis it makes no sound so no returns available at all as we have honestly spelled out the situation, it makes no sound, just run that one more time for those of you who need clarification, it makes no sound. ” Link

“HERE IS A VINTAGE DMX DRUM MACHINE BY OBERHEIM. I PLUGGED IT IN AND TURNED IT ON, IT SAYS OBERHEIM DMX DATA MAY BE BAD PRESS BOTH ARROWS TO EMPTY MEMORY EMPTY, SELECT SEQUENCE NUMBER 0. I PRESSED 1-9 AND ALL THE BUTTONS ON THE KEYBOARD WORK.

I NOTICED ON THE MIDDLE ROW, IT IS MISSING THE ONE BUTTON BELOW WERE IT SAYS BASS, ON THE NUMBER2 AND IT IS MISSING ONE SLIDER KNOB WERE IT SAYS SNARE.

THE LAST KNOB ON THE FRONT, KNOB NUMBER 8 IS NOT THE ORIGINAL, BUT IT WORKS FINE, UNDER THE PERCUSSION 2 ROW.

I AM NOT SURE HOW TO USE THIS UNIT. I HEARD SOMETHING LOOSE INSIDE THE UNIT, I OPENED IT UP, THERE IS A BATTERY INSIDE, IT IS A NICAD BATTERY. IT MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED .I DO NOT KNOW WERE IT GOES. IT SAYS NEW BATTERY 22188. THERE IS A LARGE BLUE THING BACK THERE THAT MIGHT THE BATTERY OR SOMETHING ELSE. I AM NOT SURE, IT LOOKS LIKE A GIANT CAPACITOR.

I AM SELLING THIS UNIT AS IS BECAUSE OF ITS AGE. I AM NOT SURE HOW TO TEST THE UNIT OUT. IF YOU KNOW HOW I CAN TEST IT, LET ME KNOW.

I PRESSED THE SWING BUTTON AND IT SAYS 50%, I PRESSED THE UP BARREL AND I CAN MAKE IT GO UP TO 95%. IT SAYS 2 WITH THE STAR SIGN PLAY SEQUENCE 189, AUTO START OFF AND I PRESSED THE PLAY BUTTON. I PRESSED THE PLAY STOP BUTTON AND IT SAYS SELECT SEQUENCE 189, PLAY SEQUENCE 189.

ON THE BACK OF THE UNIT IT HAS CONNECTIONS FOR EXTERNAL CLOCK IN OUT, SYNC TO TAPE IN OUT, FOOT SWITCH START AND NEXT. IT HAS SELECTIONS FOR MIX, LEFT, MONO AND RIGHT AND IT HAS INPUTS FOR CLICK, BASS, SNARE, HIGH HAT, TOM1 , TOM 2, SYMBOL PERCUSSION 1 AND PERCUSSION 2. IT HAS A TRIGGER IN AND CBN CONNECTION. UNDER CASSETTE INTERFACE IT HAS ENABLE ON, 2 INPUT AND 2 OUTPUT. IT HAS A PROTECT ON SWITCH AND A SWITCH ON THE BACK. I THINK IT MIGHT BE A MIDI CONNECTOR, BUT I AM NOT SURE. ” Link
