Link
“It’s old so it does show some signs of age but it just adds to the charm. Otherwise it’s in great working order although there is no manual for it.” Link

“Here we have my Yamaha CS-5 synthesizer. An unprepossessing little chap, on the face of it. I bought this from a friend who bought it new, 15 years ago. I won’t tell you it’s never been gigged and has enjoyed a smoke-free home/studio existence, because it hasn’t. I’ve gigged this little bugger to Benicassim and back. It has always enjoyed luxury transport in its own hard-case (which is more than I can say for myself), and has been recently and completely gratuitously serviced (it has never EVER let me down – these things are built like tanks, and there was nothing wrong with it – I just thought it had earned a treat!).
It has accompanied me through thick (being “on the telly”) and thin (low budget scouse manager pop video hell). OK, so that’s thin and thin…
It’s a simple synth, but it has earnt its spurs both live (drastically repatched between songs in a couple of seconds) and in the studio (it has served bass, lead, and FX duties). I hate to part with it, but everything must go, so my loss is your gain.
It has a Europlug by the way. I’ve no idea why – apparently it’s had it from new (certainly looks that way) – but it’s never posed a problem – I just plugged it into a shaver adaptor (included).
Sounds especially fantastic through more or less any kind of tape echo.” Link
“In generally good working order eg. all dial/knob functions, sound output & external input. Some minor cosmetic marks. 3 of keys on keyboard slightly uneven visually but action and sound of them fine. 1 other key requires some attention as it sometimes requires firmer pressure to activate sound. Pitch bend slider missing plastic ‘cover’.” Link
It will be supplied with a printed and bound copy of the Owner’s Manual (A PDF of the Service Manual can be supplied)
It is in generally good condition – all of the keys work and all of the knobs do what they should.
Below is a video montage of the photographs along with a multitracked audio demo of the synth recorded into Cubase
I am selling as I don’t play with this as often as I would like and I believe that it should be played with more.
I will package to withstand a tornado – but please take into account that this is a vintage instrument – collection is also an option
The postage price includes compensation up to £250
There are a few issues, however, so please read on:
The Pitch Bend Slider has been broken off and the original; Slider Cap is missing, I have replaced this with a Slider Cap that “just about” fits on what remains of the Slider.
There is a crack in the Right Hand End Cheek – this is purely cosmetic and is shown in detail on one of the photos.
There is a “hissing” noise that is present when keys are pressed – even when the Oscillators are turned off/down. I have uploaded a video showing this – I have recorded a bass line and turned the oscillators up and down whilst continuing to play – you can hear the “hiss” playing the bass line.
It’s not that obvious but it needs to be pointed out.” Link
“You are bidding on a vintage Yamaha CS-5 monophonic synthesizer. I bought this synth from Ko at Modeless Factory over in Japan and it is in great shape. Completely overhauled and set for 120V. I only had a chance to use it a few times never on tour or live. Now I’m moving cross country and need some extra cash so it is up for sale.” Link
“The Yamaha CS-5 is a vintage analog synth in great shape. The CS-5 is a single-oscillator monophonic analog synthesizer with classic filter, envelope and modulation controls. It features 37 full-sized keys, a multi-mode 12 dB/Oct resonant filter, an LFO with sample and hold, and an external audio input you can route through the VCF or VCA sections.” Link
“Up for grabs is this lovely CS-5 synthesizer, made (I think) in the late 70′s. This example is in good condition, having been owned by me for about a year. The only reason I am selling this synth is to raise some cash for other projects.
There are a couple of minor faults with this synth, such as:
Small scratch on one of the keys
The “tune” pot is a little bit scratchy
The little red LED to show LFO frequency has failed
The key contacts could probably do with a clean
Minor rust underneath and on front lower panel
Otherwise this synth is in great condition, given it is over 30 yrs old! It is capable of making some superb sounds, and has an interesting “sample and hold” feature which produces some very wacky noises indeed.
You are welcome to arrange a visit to have a play with the synth before bidding, though please be aware that the stand and amplifier I am using are NOT included in the auction.” Link
“Yamaha CS-5 analog synthesizer for sale, has some issues. As you can see from the picture there is a dent on the back panel, this does not effect the synth. Also there are 4 dead keys that need to be fixxed, unless your using a midi to cv convertor which enables you to use your own midi keyboard or DAW to control it. The CS-5 features a single oscillator structure with square and saw waves plus noise source. ADSR envelope and a 12db multimode filter. There is also a external input for filtering other instruments. There is an LFO with sine saw and s/h which can modulate pitch, filter and vca.” Link
“I am selling a Yamaha CS-5 synthesizer from the late 70s/early 80s, I bought it about 4-5 months ago to use mainly on an EP I produced with my band. Since I did so, I haven’t really played it, so I figure it should go to better use and I should sell it. When I first got it it was slightly crackly as the person I bought it off had barely used it, though some switch cleaner sorted that out and it worked perfectly while I was using it.
It has been really fun to use and you can make some really interesting sounds. I found these features most interesting: controlling the amount of white noise, CV/Gate and LFO with not only sine and saw wave but a Sample and Hold function.
When I bought it, there was one knob missing (on the “Initial Level” pot) but it still works fine and is easily replaceable if it bothers you. Also the small light on the power switch was not on, but the light on the LFO still comes on when the synth is powered up so it didn’t bother me. Again it is very easy to replace if you wish to. I have taken a picture of these.” Link
-90/220v power cable.
-instruction manual and patch sheets
In the back is autographed by Andrew Fletcher (Depeche Mode).
The synthesizer work perfect in all its parts, except for the LFO selector, only the position wave S&H is malfunction, electrical contact may be, I do not have time and patience to watch.” Link
“Fully working Yamaha CS5 analog synthesizer. It’s in great shape and is fully working. All pots and keys feel good. There’s a few small nicks on it but no significant marks or damage. It plays and sounds great, I just don’t use it much anymore.” Link
“Zum Verkauf steht ein Yamaha CS 5 Synthesizer. Es handelt sich um einen monophonen Analog Synthesizer aus den späten 70er Jahren.
Das Instrument bietet die klassische Synthesizer Struktur VCO-VCF-VCA und einem LFO, alle Parameter direkt einstellbar.
Das Filter ist umschaltbar in seiner Charakteristik zwischen Lowpass, Bandpass und Highpass.
Wellenformen: Dreieck, Pulse, Noise, PWM
LFO: Sinus, Dreieck, Sample&Hold
an dessen Stelle eingesetzt, siehe Fotos.
Link
“Amazing sounding synth, very good condition apart from pich bend slider knob is missing, this does not affect performance and any slider cap will fit.
I have had this synth for about 20 years and nothing comes close to the bass it produces.
Cv control and external input.
Grab a bargain vintage synth.
Please note some pots and slidders may have a slight crackle untill they get some use as the synth hasnt had much use in about 3 years.” Link
“I have had this for over 16 years and in that time it has been a great sound source, a pleasure to use and a great introduction to analog synthesis. It has got a great sound to it, it has no Midi but a CV Gate so you can use a converter. A great feature is the ability to plug external instruments into it and use the filter to alter the sounds, or run a drum machine through it and get some fantastic effects. One of the best parts of this synth is the LFO with S & H with which you can modulate every part of the synth, giving some great squelchy bass patterns, also great for lead lines, and if you need to thicken up the sound just pass it through a phaser or flanger.
In mostly working condition (easily fixable), and good cosmetic condition. There are a few scratches on the back, above the mixer on the front panel, and some tape residue on some of the keys that should clean off quite easily. All knobs, keys and switches are present. Some knobs are a bit scratchy and the filter cut-off control isn’t working (just needs to be replaced), I think it just needs a good service and this will probably see it running for another 15 years and beyond. Very reluctant sale.” Link
“In good used condition. I plugged it in and it powered right up. All keys work. I moved the knobs and buttons and they all seem to be doing their thing! I don’t really know what their “thing” is, but I know it sure made some wicked cool sounds and the knobs and buttons changed sounds when I turned/pushed them. There is the tiniest bit of tape residue on the top, near the Pitch Bend knob area (visible in photos), and there are some normal scuffs here and there, as this is a vintage item. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS — YOU WILL RECEIVE EXACTLY WHAT YOU SEE (no case included).” Link
“Yamaha CS 5 analogue synthesizer.
Great sounding little synth, condition is pretty good, one plastic knob missing, this and all the other controls work fine though.
Can be a little crackly on the Medium and High pass filters, I think it just needs a good service.
I have used this for numerous live performances and it has never let me down.” Link
“For Sale is my Yamaha cs-5 Synthesizer. in full working condition, and good cosmetic condition. just a few very minor scrathes on the back. all knobs and switches work and are present. i have had this for over 8 years and in that time it has never missed a beat. as well as being the most relialbe Vintage Synthesizer you can get, it has also got a lovely sound to it, it has no Midi but a CV Gate so you can use a convertor. you can also plug external instruments into it like a guitar, or as i do put my digital CZ5000 synth and use the filter to soften the sounds. or run a drum machine through it and get some fantastic effects. one of the best parts of this synth is the LFO with S & H with witch you can Modulate every part of the synth, giving some great Giorgio Maroda type bass pattens. also great for lead lines, and if you need to thicken up the sound i just pass it through a phaser or flanger and get some Arp Odyssey Billy Currie sounds with out it having to go wrong every 5 min.” Link
“Monophoner Synthesizer mit 1 VCO mit Pulse oder Sägezahn Wellenform und Noise-Generator.

Keyboard mit 37 Tasten,
Anschlüsse: Control Volt In/Out; Trigger IN/OUT; External In; Output – alle als 6,3 mm Klinke ausgeführt.

Link
“This synth is fully functional, and its an amzing sounding synth like al the cs series. It has a broken pitch fader, the fader still works its been snapped in transportation from one studio to the next. ” Link
“This unit is in full working order and excellent condition, the only issue is that the Hi Pass/Band Pass/Low Pass switch is a little flaky and causes a bit of crackle when you change it, par for the course with an analog synth this old (it dates from the early 80s).” Link
“I was given this synth about 15yrs ago by a friend who didn’t realize that it was missing it’s fuse cover and fuse. I had other boards at the time and ended up putting this keyboard in my storage closet. Now that I’m unemployed, finding a replacement fuse assembly seemed like a good idea. I called Grainger and I was able to get the right one (only two in the whole country). I put the new assembly in and turned on the synth only to be greeted by a droning sound that took me about an hour to get rid of. This drone is caused by the VCA initial level being turned past 8 oclock, when the VCA EG depth is turned up significantly. If you buy the keyboard and you find yourself with this feedback loop, all you have to do is turn down the VCA initial level, and turn the VCA EG depth until it stops. I just wanted to mention it, because I went to a feedback forum where a lot of people were complaining about this drone, and thought the synth was not working, even though it was. Once I got to know how the synth works I had a blast playing it, and as I tinkered with it, I found a lot of usable sounds. I also ran a drum machine through it’s filters and that sounded pretty amazing as well. I have to say this synth really surprised me, especially for a less expensive analog synth.
As far as cosmetic condition, this synth is not a museum piece. Please check the photos. It has a damaged release pot. Wich still works fine, and has enough stem left to to be turned full range. This Yamaha also has it’s share of scratches and the body has places that are rusting (see picture 8 ). One side is missing 2 screws and the other side 1. I just want you to know, exactly what your bidding on. So that you are happy with your purchase. This synth will be packaged properly and will ship within 24hrs of receiving payment. Check my feedback and bid with confidence. Thanks for looking, here’s a few words from Vintagesynth.com about the CS 5. They also have a link to the CS 5 manual at their web site.” Link
“This is a cracking little synth. I’ve had it for about five years, but due to business I don’t get time to use it any more.
I own a Roland SH09 and used to own an SH101. This Yamaha is, in many ways, a much better synth than either of these. It has a really unusual feature: a multi-mode 12 dB/Oct resonant filter. You can set it to high, mid or low band pass. The low band pass is amazing for producing really dirty bass sounds.
The synth architecture is really easy to understand and use, so if you are a beginner you’ll get going with it straight away.
Its in good condition. Its all working except three or four of the keys at the bottom end of the keyboard. Nonetheless, you can access these tones through playing with the pitchbend, fine tune and the feet options. One of the LEDs has gone. The 12 dB/Oct resonant filter control is a bit scratchy, so you might have to wiggle it. But its in great nick considering it was made in the late 1970s.” Link
“I have had this for five years, and has been sitting in storage for a year. This is very hard to part with as i have had some very good times jamming with this keyboard at home. very fun to use and mess with. mostly because this type of synth alows you to create your own sounds. its not like most modern synth patches where they come already preset. sure you could still tweak those within the settings and controls, but there is nothing like playing on these kool analog synths. tweaking, changing sounds are endless possibilities. all the sounds i were able to create kept reminding me of the backround sounds you might hear in old star trek shows, or old sci-fi movies… especially if you grew up playing video games in the 70′s and 80′s, and alot of sound you would hear on old commercials. haha! i would tweak out a sound and could totally replicate something that i remember from old atari or nintendo consoles. very exciting! if you have never owned an old analog synth you are in for a real treat!!! ” Link
“For sale Yamaha CS-5 classic analog synth. The item is in perfect working and cosmetic condition and ready to be plugged in to your studio set up. It also has been fitted with MIDI so could be used with your sequencer soft ware.” Link
“This auction is for the Yamaha CS-5. The synth itself was serviced about 2 years ago and to be honest is working perfectly, no missing knobs or parts and hardly any cosmetic scratches for its age. Selling due to fact that its now surplus to my requirements but it is a brilliant little monosynth. ” Link
