“This is an AKAI AX-80 Analog Synth
I have had this one for several years now and love it,
But it is time to pass it along!

This machine has always performed admirably!
It sounds like a dream, punchy and thick.
With two oscillators per voice, cross mod, and deep modulation.. it really creates fantastic sounds!

Get one that is sure to work for years to come!” Link

” I bought this Akai AX-80 and it is need of around £200-£250 of repairs (as I have been quoted).

The problems are as listed.

A third of the keys across the board don’t work or work intermittently, there is a small crack in the screen with the parameter readout, the output sounds noisy/dirty and a number of the parameter edit buttons don’t work.

This is a relatively rare keyboard in the UK and has the distinction of being the first keyboard released by Akai. It has analog filters and digitally controlled analog oscillators as opposed to the less stable VCO’s. The sound is good but is much better with external effects added.” Link

“This AX80 is in fantastic condition. Every button on the touch panel interface works perfectly (the main issue with these guys) and all knobs and keys perfectly as well. There is one or two very tiny scratches that are basically negligible and to be expected from a 25 year old synthesizer. It honestly could not be in better shape.

Also, I’m including the original manual and an Akai gig bag which is probably what I’ll miss the most. Seriously, look at that guy.” Link

“Up for bid is an Akai AX80 analog synth. Synth has some road wear and some dings and dents. All keys seem to be fine and not crooked. Tune and Output knobs are missing, but still function. I plugged in the synth and it seems to have sound with minimal crackling. I didn’t notice any dead keys.I am not familiar with all of the functions of it but it seems to still play and has some pretty weird preset sounds. As with all used synths, it pays to have it professionally serviced by a tech who knows how to clean it out and check all of the contacts. We do not claim to be experts and have listed this item to the best of our knowledge. The item is listed as AS-IS. ” Link

“Great Vintage Synth which is getting harder to find, especially in good condition.

This is a used synthesizer and has its share of cosmetic wear. The front left corner is a little dinged up as can be seen in picture 5. This side also has some scratches that don’t show up in the picture – it’s nothing terribly heavy however. Picture 7 shows some light scratches to the display bar windows. Picture 8 shows what is probably the worst swatch of wear, there are some medium to heavy scratches on the display to the left and there is a couple of light dings to the casing. Other than these areas of note there is general light cosmetic wear throughout that you would expect from a used instrument of theis kind and age.

All of the keys play with no problems or any damage to any of them. I play around with synthesizers just a little bit so I have not tested this in any great detail. If you would like me to check somehting specific please describe to me how to test it and I will do my best with it. I have hooked it up to a small amp and played through with some presets – everything is fine as far as I can tell -the synth sounds as it should with no notable problems as far as I could tell scrolling through some options and playing around on it for 30 minutes or so. I was unable to get any sound from the headphone jack for some reason.” Link

“We have no manual for this system so we are not certain how to test all the features. The keys all work, the key velocity is fine. The pitch control on the left changes the pictch, I am not sure what the modulation control is supposed to do. The sliders are working, the sliders and the various buttons should have their contacts cleaned. We selected many of the buttons and the effects changed, some of the buttons had to be depressed a few times before they worked (need to be cleaned). This is being sold with the understanding that it has been partially tested to the best of our ability, there may be some servicing required.” Link

“This auction is for an akai ax 80 synthesizer from 1984. If you’re looking at this auction, you probably know what this thing does. It’s compared to the roland juno series, but has 2 syncable oscillators per voice and a bunch of other features to boot (multiple envelopes, lfos, etc). The sound -producing part of the synth works great- no drift or dropped voices or any of that, the only issues are cosmetic. The synth has a broken key (but still receives midi) and the volume and tone knobs are missing. there is a piece of tape over the logo on the back. the vent in the back has a slight dent in it. there are several scuffs and scrapes. one of the mod wheel fine-tune knobs is crooked, but still works.” Link

“This is a quality Pro AKAI Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer. Model AX 80 . It is in previously used condition. There are three keys that are not sounding and some have a bit of a fuzzy sound to them. The back wood sides have chips out of them, otherwise there are just small typical marks, scratches and scuffs. The previous owner says it was given to him by the Base player of the Doobie Brothers. “More closet clean out. Up for sale auction is a fully functioning Akai AX80 Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer. It’s straight out of the 80′s and was one of my impulse purchases last year off Craigslist. This puppy sounds seriously fat and other then having to clean the contacts on a couple keys, it gave my a good month of fun. Okay maybe make that 2 weeks and then it sat for several months (okay a year) until I decided that I need to control my impulse purchasing better and sell this. So all of the sound preset and edit functions work well, as do the membrane switches. The original battery was not changed, but it has not leaked (I just opened it up like 5 minutes ago to make sure of that.) The keys all respond well and did I mention this puppy can get FAT (no I’m not spelling with a “PH.”)

The negatives: The volume pot is very noisy and it’s annoying – well, only when you turn it. The wood sides are not in good shape (and are pictured below.) The middle G has a small chip in the underneath section of the key (pictured.) While I cleaned the contacts for the keys that had issues last year (courtesy of my rubber eraser,) I did not clean them all, so the new owner should be aware of potential older keyboard maintenance. The internal electronics do have that “old electronics” odor when you pop the case (the keyboard was probably used in smokey bars way back when – I know this as I had one of these in the 80′s and it along with my DX7 played lots of smokey bars.) The plastic that covers the LED readout is in mediocre shape (well pictured.) Lastly this puppy is HEAVY as it’s mostly metal and wood – 31+ pounds without the heavy duty TV box it will be shipping in (another 11+ pounds.) ” Link

“As you can see this machine looks pretty much perfect all around except the sides. Both sides got cracked by someone. I glue/clamped the sides and did some filler even underneath to recreate the strength aspects. Amazingly there was very little to straight and the panel is still perfect! I replaced a couple keys that got busted and set everything up so it’s like new in every other way. These ones with the cloth sides are more rare so I just left it that way. A person could make the thing over with some coating and turn it into the other version if they were really concerned about the ends. Or cut new pieces and recover them if they want to fully restore it but from normal viewing angles and in normal light it’s not that noticeable. It looks great from the back. I’m touching up a couple paint wears in the “A” in Akai near the bottom of the letter. Otherwise looks real good to anyone viewing from the audience side. This was obviously a VERY low miles machine.

Electronically it’s all checked over. Battery within spec etc. I programmed some sounds. I didn’t fill it all up with sounds. Most people want to do that themselves. These are one of the more programmable vintage analog synths and they seem to be fairly sought after these days.

Serial number is 91120-20754″ Link

” My trusty Akai AX80 is up for sale, have to down size due to lack of space in my new place. 100% functional, buttons, keys, slider all working great. Also comes with a hard wooden case. As for sound if you have ever heard one you know how sweet it is. Clangy, noisey, cushy pads, to punchy basses. One of the best to come out of 1984, and I use to have a Juno 106 and imo I think the Akai kicks its butt. ” Link

Akai, AX-80 @ 25 January 2011, “No Comments”

“The Akai AX80 is an 8 voice analog programmable synthesiser produced by Akai
as it’s first professional synthesiser in 1984 and despite being seen as a poor relation to the
Jupiters and Moogs of the time still stands up as a great sounding true analog beast.
The keybed is velocity sensitive and it has two DCO’s (analog oscillators whose pitch is
digitally controlled as on the Juno’s) with a sub oscillator and sync, an analog low pass CEM filter,
and a highpass filter, 3 LFO’s, Amplifier and filter envelopes. It has Mod and ptich wheels and the
mod wheel can be routed to filter cutoff as well as pitch (lfo) mod.
There are 32 preset locations and 32 programmable sounds locations and the AX80 has midi
connections but being of this vintage, no sysex functions. For preset storage you will need to dig
out those dusty old cassettes!
This example has been looked at by Kent Spong of KSR and he managed to get the
lovely flourescent front panel bar graphs working but unfortunately not the front panel
membrane switches so although it still plays lovely, this is sold as spares or repair.
It is a heavy beast so collection would be brilliant but if you want it by sent by carrier it can be done.
Naturally I don’t have the original box or manuals, I will – if I can pack it to my satisfaction-
be sending it in a Gator soft case – but only if I feel it is protected enough. Obviously if it is collected
the buyer is welcome to have this case as part of the purchase.
I love the sound of this beastie but I just don’t have the time or the skill to get it working properly
and can’t justify buying another just so I can use this one for parts!
Grab a bargain and a very very underrated synth.” Link

“ITEM DESCRIPTION: You are bidding on One Akai AX-80 Keyboard Synthesizer. This is a lost freight item that we recieved as you see it in the photos. It has some packing peanuts inside and suffered damage to the end caps and keys that we’ll show in the photos. The left side is more badly broken than the right. The far left key is broken in half and the pitch bend wheels are pushed into the keys on that end causing the lowest 3 white and 2 black keys to be stuck. The top white key on the right end sticks as well. All the keys, even broken ones, play to some extent if lifted and pressed down. so it is just the keys. We powered the keyboard up and it powers up and changed patches and presets as well as allowing you to edit the sound. The sound is clean and clear and sounds great. We did however notice that any button beyond the #16 button on the presets and editing did not work. Not sure but something on the right inside might be disconnected. Because we aren’t techs and wouldn’t know the first thing about fixing this up we are selling it as-is for parts/repair. This is your chance to save big-time so don’t miss out!!” Link

“This Auction is for a well kept AX-80 that I inherited. I am downsizing my studio to a backpack, so; I’m selling this bulky synth. I cannot find anything wrong with it. Note: The primary output is a mono output (I’m running it into a DJ mixer); however I overcame this by using the headphone plug (1/4″) into stereo RCAs that I am including in this Auction. “AKAI AX-80

Link

Everyone was buying DX-7′s, but I wanted something different… the analog sound. I kept it covered at all times and will provide the cover with it if I can find it. It has been sitting in it’s original box (which it will ship in) and not used for years. I plugged it in and it sounded great, but some of the soft switches were a bit flakey. Not matter, all of the internal programs are accessible from the big dial too” Link

“This Akai AX80 as you may know, is an 8 voice Analog synthesizer and Akai’s first professional keyboard. It’s more flexible than a lot of other synths of the era. And also features 96 patches I guess it is, 2/3 of which can be edited. (And dumped/retrieved from tape or I supposed a computer sound card! I haven’t tried it yet on that one though. ) TWO DCOs / voice which can be set to cross modulate in a few ways and there are separate envelopes for filter and pitch may also be assigned to evenlope for modulate. The only synth I’m aware of to use the fluorescent bar graph display approach. Quite nice for editing once you get the hang of it. This one has had the solder gone over up there so it’s all working great and all functions checked over. As you can see I used an alternative knob scheme on this one to add some extra pazazz. :-) There were also a few scratches that I used high quality auto paint on. The Akai label has a few small scuffs that would be easy to touch up if someone wanted to. I also painted the sides and you can see a few impressions in the wood under that paint in the light but it really looks pretty nice overall now. In typical lighting very good. ” Link

Not only does this synthesizer hail from the last of the gold era of analog synthesizer i.e. 1980 but the design of the front panel interface is unlike any other since.

Its a beautiful designed and easy to edit synth.

If you like FAT analog like the Roland Juno but with tons more sonic abilities like cross modulation for those bell like timbres and the the ability to route the filter to the modulation wheels this is you machine.

From fat Depeche Mode like basses to thick warm strings and bell tones this is an amazing machine.

The rest of the synth is in great shape. All the key contacts were cleaned by the previous owner so it plays beautifully.

Unfortunately, it suffers from a known issue where the last few membrane switches are not functioning. I just never got around to doing it. ” Link

Link

ax80 “Up for bid is the AKAI AX80 PROGRAMMABLE POLYPHONIC ANALOG SYNTHESIZER in good cosmetic shape. Check below for review from vintage synth.

FUNCTIONALITY: Works good. Plenty of fat greats sounds on the two banks. A is programmable and P is presets. Both A & B works great. Has some ISSUES on Bank B:

HERE IS WHAT I DISCOVERED:

BANK B14-B23 PATCHES ARE OUT (NO SOUND)-Unprogrammable

BANK B24-B32 PATCHES pretty much sound THE SAME. “Sweeping” like sound-unprogmmable.

B1-B13 are good.

Membrane buttons #7,11,15,23,31 engages but you have to press a little harder and you also have to press the panel with your other thumb (as shown with the wood marker on picture#9). Sometimes you have to play around and find the sweet spot on the front panel in order to engage. This is a very common issue with AX80′s, I have owned 3 of them. You can always change patches by using the EDIT CONTROL UP OR DOWN BUTTON to change patches. Very temperamental. Someday it works fine, someday it just doesn’t work. Check some AX-80 forums and you’ll understand what I mean. ” Link

ax80 “I hate to see this go, but I got bills to pay.

Cosmetically this board is in fair condition. Some of the keys seem a little crooked. There are numerous scrapes on the keys and casiing as well as areas on the side panels where the leather has rubbed off, thus exposing the ply wood under it (see pics).

Functionally the only issue I noticed is that the white C end key is broken and only works when you press it really hard and hold it down. I opened up the unit and found that someone had duct taped it back together somehow. When I first got it, some of the membrane switches didn’t work. So I got the service manual and fixed them myself. They work great now.

I’m including my copy of the service manual with this unit since I ‘ll no longer need it. Who ever wins this auction will be able to use it if a problem occurs. The owners manual can easily be found on the web.” Link

ax80_1 “Mint Condition!

-Works great!

-All lights, filters, switches, wheels, buttons, knobs, and keys work

-2 DCO Per Voice + Sub Osc makes for some beefy analog tones

-Similar to: Juno 60/6, Korg Polysix, Poly61, Kawai sx210, Akai AX60, DX7, JX8P, JX3P, ect.

-Notable features include: The Unique Display!!! Alpha wheel parameter editing, membrane buttons, velocity sensitive keyboard, easily accessible rear outputs, built like a tank

-This was Akai’s first Professional Synthesizer, and was it’s flagship of the micro studio product line in the mid 80s

-Midi – in, out, thru (though I have never used or tested them so I don’t know how well they work)

This Akai AX80 is in mint or near mint condition. It has very few blemishes the likes of which do not occur on the faceplate of the synth. See the pictures below, as they explain just how clean and beautiful this synth is. All of the buttons and switches and knobs and wheels work great. Keys all work. The screen, which is the most notable and amazing feature of this synth, works perfectly and the clear plastic guard over the display is very clean. It has midi control sockets in the back, but being as I do not use midi or have any midi equipment I have no way of testing the functionality of the midi implementation. This thing is ready to go and jam on, and is in such great condition it should last for decades to come!” Link

ax80 “I am selling mine because I updated to a Yamaha EX7, and I no longer use it. This AKAI has been a good performer and has worked well, but she’s developed a few problems over the years:

1: You can see the broken key on the pictures. I considered “fixing” this by gluing on a popsicle stick, but there are key sets for this baby online for a few bucks. It’s an easy fix.

2: This Synth has picked up the “Bridge Connectors” problem, in that the pushbuttons work sporadically. This is user repairable, just check http://lp2.net/MainServices2.htm (I am not savvy enough to tackle this problem myself), plus you can cycle through the presets by pushing the “up-down” buttons.

3: As a byproduct, I’m assuming, of the bridge connector problem, some of the keys randomly don’t work. This clears out by changing the patch you’re in and then going back.

I know these analogue synths are getting hard to find. Heck, they’re almost thirty years old! But, repairs to make this baby shine like new should cost under a buck fifty to pay someone else to do it and a quarter that to do it yourself. I just don’t have the know-how to do it or the time. ax80 “Classic Akai AX80 analog synthesizer. Everything works as it should, recently had a new battery installed, sounds great! It does have some wear and tear (scuffs and scratches) but it is only cosmetic. What you see inthe picture is exactly what you get. This is a great and easy to program synth. If you’ve never seen one in person the programming display is really cool looking, turn off the lights!” Link

FUNCTIONALITY: Great working condition. All leds, controls, membrane button panels works great. Tested and fully functional. Everything works!

PHYSICAL CONDITON: Minor scratches, scuffs, small dings.small paint chips. The original owner imprinted what appears to be a license# on the rear back panel (see pix). Overall it’s in very good shape.” Link

ax80 “Up for auction is an Akai AX80 Synth. Very eclectic piece of gear. If you are into the truly digital sound of the 80′s this is a great piece of gear. It has seen some use. It has the normal wear and scratches for a twenty year old unit, but it works fine. (I am discounting the BIN price to reflect the cosmetic issues). As with every piece of gear I offer on eBay I tell everything I know about it. I never want my customers to have a bad experience with billybobs_garage. So in that spirit I want to mention the Data Control Dial. It appears that it is a replacement. It works fine but it works in reverse, I think. Instead of going up in value when you dial from left to right, the numbers on the screen drop. Conversely when you dail from right to left they go up. Maybe it is supposed to work that way, but I don’t think so. It doesn’t affect the operation at all, but it was just a little weird. Maybe someone out there can tell if it is supposed to be that way. Anyway, I wanted to mention it. Everything else works as it should: no dead keys, buttons or pots. It comes with a semi-soft case, but I will pack everything in a box. The case is good for gigging, but I wouldn’t want to ship it across the country in just the case. ” Link
