“This is an Akai AX-73 synthesizer. It is a polyphonic synthesizer with fully analog VCOs and VCFs. Great sound and underappreciated compared to the Roland Juno/Jupiter synths of the mid-80s era. This one needs to be retuned (the tune knob on the back works but the voices are out of tune with each other.) I believe it needs a factory reset / patch reset but the battery is fine and there is no leakage/damage to the internals. My guess is a memory reset could fix this but it’s been so long since I’ve worked with it that I don’t have the manual or the info on how to do this.
***IT WORKS except for the voices being out of tune with each other, so technically I have to sell this as “for parts or not working” but it is working for the most part.***” Link
“This is a VINTAGE item and it has some wear. It plays great except the volume slider needs to be cleaned (lots of static and skipping when it’s moved). Seven of the black keys are damaged and seem to be held in place with an adhesive (they work fine and unless you open the case you can’t tell which ones) see pics for examples. There are 99 voices in the memory bank but they are not all original, at this time I do not know if it is possible to ‘reset’ to the original memory banks or if the data would have to be reloaded. The AX sounds awesome but really could use a good internal cleaning from someone who knows what they are doing.” Link
“YOU ARE LOOKING AT A GREAT GREAT KEYBOARD AND AMPLIFIER….THE KEY BOARD HAS ONE OR TWO KEYS THAT STICK BUT OVER ALL ITS IN GOOD CONDITION….THE AMP IS IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER…..SO IF YOU WANNA USE THE TWO TOGETHER OR PLUG IN WHAT EVER YOU WANT…” Link
“This rare Akai analog synth makes some amazing sounds: fat warm basses, rich pads, screaming leads. Unique among synths of the period Akai devised a proprietary connection so you can route an Akai sampler (S612, S900, S950) through the synth’s 24db analog filter (VCF) to make samples richer and more interesting. (Akai cable required.)
Six voice analog synthesis with one oscillator per voice, which can be combined in different modes for fatter sounds, including a great mono mode with all six oscs stacked up. Great with portamento! The VCA offers a standard ADSR envelope shaping. LFO for modulation, as well as onboard chorus. It has a unique auto-tuning control to stop the oscillators roaming in the heat.
This machine was produced while analog technology was being hastily superseded by digital synthesis but offers the best of both worlds. It even has MIDI so it can fit into a modern computer driven studio. Great retro sound!
The synth has seen some gigging in its time and isn’t in pristine condition: some of the keys in the top two octaves for example have seen better days (see pics for details) although they’re still playable. Of course, hitching it to a MIDI set-up means you wouldn’t need the original keyboard. The metal and plastic case has inevitable scratches and a stupid Warner Bros sticker near the bottom octave. I’ll leave that for the buyer to remove.” Link
“The Akai AX-73 uses the CEM3394 ‘synth on a chip’ like the AX60. The sound is different though. I think the 73 is more refined sounding. It’s cursor entry but it’s got the larger velocity sensetive keyboard. I guess it’s the only one with dynamics other than the SCI Multi-trak so as is typical in the analog world there are trade-offs. But this and it’s VX-90 rack version are solid sounding analog synths. Those real VCO’s VCF’s and VCA’s give you a signal path uninterrupted by the sterile domain of digital. Highly recommended for someone who has need for a machine they can use in conjunction with a computer as a controller PLUS have a real analog synth on tap to mix with virtual synths or feature in your productions.
This one is cosmetically ok with a couple small scratches. One of the sides I repaired but if someone wants something without that minor cosmetic issue I actually have another side from a scrap unit I could stick on it and will do so if you ‘buy it now’. As always with Sound Doctorin’ you’re buying a unit that should anything fail, I’ll do what I can to help along the way**(see note). I will only per sey warranty that the unit works on arrival and if not contact me and we’ll discuss repair options. If you immediately instead run to paypal then you’ll wind up paying the return shipping as is their policy and I won’t fuss with it. It has only happened once but I just want to warn people that it’s cheaper to avoid causing *me* more trouble when I’m already trying to help you. Shipping is always risky on these old things so let’s work together if anything comes up. Not create meaningless work.” Link
“This 1984 Classic MIDI synthesizer is rare and fully functional in excellent condition. Both Wheels work great and all the presets are fine. This keyboard is known for classic fat analog synth bass and other vintage keyboard sounds. Everything is in like new condition.” Link
“As you can see in the pics, there is a bit of paint on the botton and some scrapes and faded numbers on the top. Otherwise in GREAT condition.” Link
“Selling my Akai AX-73. Synth works as it should and sounds great. Body/paint has some scratches and some griptape residue on bottom…nothing that affects it except for appearance. A few of the buttons require a little more pressure than the others but otherwise totally work fine.” Link
