2600, ARP @ 15 May 2013, “No Comments”

“For sale is an ARP 2600.
It was restored by Kevin lightner ( http://www.synthfool.com/ ) and is in great condition, everything works perfectly, great shape, it is not included the Keyboard.
It has some very interesting modifications that you can check in the info sheet explained by Kevin ( will be sent with the unit).
Many hours have been spent in upgrading the audio and cv path in critical areas.
Part of the list;

It was changed every 1/8″ jack.
New and larger spring tank rever with lower noise circuits.
New power supply stable and accurate international power linear supply, currently, the AC input is hardwired for 230 volts.
Unit will operate with 220, 230 or 240 volts AC, but internal jumpering is possible for 110 operation.

The filter is an unmodified ARP 4012 design, (the MOOG FILTER).
The internal amps are modified for lower noise and faster slew rates.
1/4″ output jacks, these jacks carry the left and right signals as provided by the output pan mixer, same as the 1/8″ jacks below them.
The envelope generators have been modified. Lower offsets( output voltages when not being used) than stock. The AR gen has considerably fasters attacks
and added gate input not normally provided by Arp.
The ADSR has much faster decay and release times available than stock.
The gate button is a high reliability type ( used in Neve and Api consoles) and provides a larger surface and a softer feel tahn stock, in addition to lightning up with a gate signal.

COMPARATOR.
This circuit mod takes its input from the envelope follower input jack (not the EF output jack) and produces a very fast risetime gate for its output. This gate is dependent upon the level
of the ipunt signal and the setting of the threshold control (grey knob). The blue Led provides visual status operation.

LAG PROCESSOR.
This circuit has been modded so no offset voltages are present during usage. Can now be used for pitch voltages (glide) without tuning
problems when adjusted, can smooth out gate signals from the comparator gate output…etc. ” Link

“The synth is in excellent condition (operationally & physically), used in a non-smoking studio. I am the second owner and it was acquired from its first owner in the mid-90s and sounds great, no issues at all. The synth was sent to Tim Smith at Weyer-Smith Labs in 1999, some issues had been tweaked and was given a clean bill of health. The black Tolex that covers the synth & keyboard is in excellent condition. NOTE: there is discoloration on 5 keys of the keyboard. Original User and Service Manuals included as well as several patch cables, and original power cord.” Link

“I was the ARP Custom Eng. Grp. Coordinator. Currently I am finishing a restoration on this ARP 2600 with 3604 keyboard. (Moog Filter) The case has had some water damage and needs new tolex, other than that it is in very good condition. I am listing it now but it is not finished. I have a new interface cable on order at this time. I have repaired the right output amplifier and the mixer input. Once I get the cable I will finish the repair and calibrate the unit.” Link

” The story of this 2600 is one that you just don’t hear about anymore.. I answered an ad to look at it and when I met with the owner, he told me about how he bought it new from a local music store here in the mid ’70s. He had used it a bit for the first few years of its life and then he packed it away in his closet and basically forgot about it for decades. When he opened the case to show it to me, I was stunned.. the thing looked brand new! It was like opening up a time capsule, I couldn’t believe it.
Once I brought it to my tech (one of the top analog synth techs in north america), I had him redo the power supply, there turned out to be a few other things wrong with it, mostly bad op-amps, so instead of having to keep bringing it back to him, I decided to spring for a full electronic restoration, in both the synth and the keyboard. Everything that could possibly go wrong with it was addressed. The power supply was completely rebuilt, every op-amp that could possibly fail was replaced with the highest grade replacements, an audio path upgrade was done, every tantalum cap was replaced, the keyboard was cleaned, bushings replaced and finally everything was calibrated with precision.” Link

“Up for sale, an ARP 2600 synthesizer in exceptional, 100% original condition and in good working order with the optional, duophonic 3620 keyboard! This is the grandaddy of synths, with three VCOs, a 24 dB/oct filter, one ADSR envelope, one VCA and one mixer section, an envelope follower, ring modulator, noise generator, LFO with sample and hold, built-in spring reverb and a pre-amplifier with stereo speakers. All features have been tested and function as they should with the included keyboard controller. Used by everyone from Joy Division to Nine Inch Nails, the 2600 is legendary and can be found on an incredible number of landmark recordings. An ARP 2600 was even used to create the sounds for R2-D2 for the original Star Wars trilogy!

This particular 2600 is Version 4.0 made only briefly in 1974 and one of the last to include the model 4012 filter, which was discontinued in ARP products just two short years later due to the fact that it was virtually identical to the filter used in the best MOOG products of the day. The 2600 versions 1-4 are virtually identical except for the fact that versions 3-4 utilized more reliable VCO chips and a more rugged enclosure. Versions 3-4 can be noted by the G clef ARP logo, still remarkably clean and intact on the outside of the gray tolexed case (photo #6). Cosmetically, this 2600 is remarkably clean. The photos simply don’t due this beauty justice! With the exception of a couple small tears in the tolex on the bottom edge of the outer case, it could have just walked out of the ARP factory. We’ve even had a couple notable artists (we won’t say who :) through Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar in the past week who have exclaimed that it’s the cleanest 2600 they’ve ever seen, and we can’t help but agree!

All of the keys on the 3620 respond very well and this is the most advanced controller offered with the 2600, featuring a dedicated LFO and latching in addition to the Portamento and Tuning features offered by previous controllers. The keyboard does not include the cover although the main synth does include the tolexed wood top that latches over the control surface (as seen in photo #4).

In well over a decade of production, less than three thousand total ARP 2600 (and 2601) synths exist, with each variation ranging from just a handful to a few hundred, making a complete, fully functional and cosmetically immaculate example like the one we have here a very rare thing indeed!” Link

“or sale is an original vintage ARP analog modular 2600 P (V2) synthesizer with 3604P keyboard in complete working condition.

The Main Unit and keyboard are working and in overall very clean condition. All of the original sliders and knobs are present and work fine. The tolex has been repaired on the front cover of the main unit. The tolex and case on the keyboard were replaced a few years ago with a sturdy maple enclosure (see photos), though some of the remaining keyboard tolex is ratty, but generally out of site. The new, sturdy hardwood case is much more attractive than the original keyboard case and will last for a long time. Otherwise, there is the usual cosmetic wear expected with an instrument of this age.

Watch a YouTube video of this Arp “in action!”

Here’s what you get:

Main Unit serial # 26034, Model number 2600P V.2.0 (made between 1971 & 1972) with Moog-type filter
Keyboard serial # 361358, Model number 3604 P
This ARP comes with the synthesizer cover (no keyboard cover), power cable and keyboard cable, and also some great extras:

- An original owner’s manual (a collector’s item unto itself) in great condition

- An original service manual, in a binder

- An original 1974 paperback copy of “Learning Music with Synthesizers” by Alan R. Pearlman, the guy who invented the ARP. In it, he describes how to make music with an ARP Odyssey, much of which is transferable to the 2600.

- Over a dozen patch cords of varying lengths.

- A Gator GK case for the keyboard. This is one of Gator’s most rugged cases and features built-in wheels with tow handle and skid bars. The case is worth $150.

There have been no modifications to this synth, but several components have been replaced, repaired and/or upgraded (see below).

This ARP is 100% functioning and looks & sounds great. Per Phil Cirocco of CMS, the 2600P V.2.0 (this model) was the last ARP to have a good audio path, and that most ARPs afterwards, including the orange faceplate 2600s, have a much hissier sound.

The restored keyboard has great action, and its hardwood case is a thing of beauty.

If you have been wanting one of the older, better-sounding ARP 2600s, here’s your chance!” Link

“Up for sale is a vintage, all original, un-modified, very gently used, 1973-74 ARP 2600 series “2600P V3.0″ analog synthesizer and “3604P” keyboard. This is an incredible, all original model for a musician seeking to purchase a vintage ARP 2600P. There are no missing pieces, and there have been no alterations. It has been recently cleaned, serviced, and calibrated to factory specifications.

This version of the ARP 2600P contains the infamous and sought after ARP 4012 filter (see photo).

The keyboard had new factory specification rubber bushings installed for each key, restoring the action of the keyboard to “like new” performance standards. The keys work perfectly with aligned, even-tempered action. All of the keys are intact, un-chipped, with no cracks. A few of the white keys at the low end of the keyboard, have some staining (see photo).

The face of the console and keyboard have a few, very minor, scratches. The black tolex exterior of both road cases that house the console and keyboard, are scratched and torn from normal wear and tear. Both travel cases are original and structurally sound with the original handles and clasps (tarnished), in excellent working condition. This console and keyboard have matching serial numbers: Console: Ser# 261523 and Keyboard: Ser#: 361523. The set includes the ARP 2600 console and 3604P keyboard in their original travel cases, the original gray power cable and gray console to keyboard cable, 4 patch cables and, the original ARP 2600 sound effects patch book. ” Link

All components are original except for 2 op amps. One for VCO-1 square wave out and the other for the Mixer amp. Additionally, the left speaker has been replaced. All have been tested and perform up to or better than original specifications.

The case of the synth has a few scratches on it and there is a small nick on the panel near the reverb sliders and on the keyboard panel upper right but overall with the restoration it looks really great. All knobs, slider caps and adjustment covers are present except one cover for the negative null which in no way affects operation. All the markings and legends are pristine.” Link

“You are bidding on a Vintage Arp 2600 Model 2601 modular synthesizer with a 3620 keyboard, patch cables and a reprinted manual.Serial numbers on cases match and are 0878. Synth case is in good condition with no major tears in tolex or dings. Cover for modular part is missing but keyboard has it’s latchable cover. I haven’t had it serviced in quite a while (my ex Moog synth tech is no longer around. :( ) but everything seems to work. It could use a good cleaning, tuning? and some tlc but upon firing it up doesn’t seem to give any noticeable problems aside from some scratchy sliders. Pictures show a few missing slider caps. Right speaker slider plastic is broken off but there is still enough plastic there to be adjustable. Despite being a a later model this thing is quite a beast and capable of making a lot of noise. Search for yourself and see there’s a few places out there that mod and refurbish them. I really don’t wish to part with it but space and other reasons don’t allow it to reside with my expanding family” Link

Keyboard jack has been swapped out to a more reliable DIN connection, but I have the original jacks and cable if you want to install them. Tolex has some nicks here and there but the units front panel is beautiful and it looks wicked sitting in the studio on a table.

Comes will power, DIN, keyboard and some patch cables.

This unit is older than I am. I have used this unit for years with my Kenton CV/Midi converter, and never found a problem. All modules and sliders are working perfectly, as is the keyboard. I will package it as carefully and safely as possible!” Link

“This has been in my family since new.

It has always been in a heated living space.

Along with the owner’s manual and Patch Book, it has a copy of a 2-page hand-written note detailing setup, trim, VCO and VCF calibration and keyboard calibration. The best part of this is the sloppy market notation at the bottom of page 2,

“IF YOU GET IN TROUBLE, CALL:

CLARK FERGUSON OR PHILIP DODDS

965-9700″

Clark Ferguson was ARP’s service department manager, and Philip Dodds was VP of engineering. These notes are likely written in Philip Dodds’ hand. He was an interesting guy that ended up having a featured role in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” after Spielberg saw him setting up a 2500 to do the big “dum dum dum DUM DAAAAA” thing.

MECHANICS

It is the 2601 V1.0, with the improved jacks that won’t flake out and the better sliders. It is the most mechanically advanced ARP 2600 model that still contains the legendary 4012 ladder-type filter that was built too close to Moog’s patents for their comfort (an actual lawsuit was never filed)

It comes with the duo phonic 3620 keyboard. Serial numbers match and are in the low 300s.

There is a broken slider at the bottom center of the main panel, although it works and can be adjusted by hand. I am looking for the replacement slider and knob I purchased and hope to include it in the auction. See pictures for detail.

A few of the sliders have scratch. See the video for an example of that.

ELECTRONICS

As just mentioned, it has the 4012 filter. Now, some of these are epoxied and gross. Some of them are copper clad but with sloppy brazing. But some … well, some glow like a beating heart pumping astounding signals through its soldered veins and arteries. This one is like that.

It also has the UN-encapsulated 4027-1 VCOs, which are necessary if you plan to do certain mods.

It also has a mod for a Mediamix Joystick, which I just learned thanks to Phil at CMS and have never looked for one. I have a picture of one for the winner. Owning a Synthi AK I can tell you joysticks are pretty nice to have on your synthesizer!

The capacitors on the power supply are 35 years old and should be replaced soon, according to a bunch of people that seem to feel very strongly about it. CMS sells a power supply you can install yourself, if you’re into that kind of thing, for $169.

COSMETICS

Yeah, well, extraordinary and that’s no lie. Bit of wear by the vibrato depth slider on the keyboard control panel. See picture for detail.

The Tolex is 99.9% and gleams. It has never been treated with waxing or shine agents and does not need it. The heavy-duty padded vinyl covers that come with this have been with this unit since new.

Owner’s manual and patch book is in fair shape. The bindings are shot but all pages themselves are in good condition. Patch book is missing one page.” Link

“Not much more to say about this 2600. It works perfectly. The sliders and parts are all original and work without scratching. It has the NON-potted modules (read: can be repaired), Duo-phonic keyboard. Original cables are included. No manuals. The only thing keeping the case from being perfect is some cleaning and the vinyl repair of a few VERY small tears. The hardware looks great, nothing bent, nothing caved in. The left side has some rust on the hardware that would clean up pretty easily with some scotchbrite. The panels on both the keyboard and the synth are flawless.

Some say these earlier 2600′s are the best sounding, but I like them all. It will include the 3604 Keyboard and both lids (synth/keyboard). I will be including some patch-cords. “Arp 2600/2601 with matching serial # 3620 keyboard in excellent original condition. It is complete, still has the original speakers and includes BOTH LIDS.
There are no tears in the tolex and it has all sliders intact with their original knobs. (photo will show 4 broken sliders which have since been replaced with N.O.S. slider shafts/ knobs) I also have about 10-15 original gray Arp patch cords and 2 dummy plugs, the owners manual and patch book, all in excellent condition.
Everything works, including the reverb. Only noted operational issue is the volume slider for VCO 3 which is a little scratchy.
The tuning/tracking of all three oscillators is exceptional, and will not need any attention. Plug and play…
The keyboard feels like new with a nice tight response and no sticking, all keys work, as well as all plugs and functions.

The only physical issue being the absence of the two latches on top as seen in photo, but will not be a problem in shipping as I will secure properly. (the circular item on top of the synth is a plastic lamp, fyi)
Both lids are intact, handles, hinges, and also the “Arp Synthesizer” badge on the back of the synth is present with no dents or major scratches. You will be very pleased with this 2600.

This instrument was previously owned by a well known Hollywood composer, and its very soul has been captured on several films from the early ’80s.
It was once priceless to me, but now I must let go.
I kept the shipping cartons with labels to authenticate previous ownership, and will ship in these cartons. ” Link

“ARP 2600 + 3260 Keyboard

Link

” For your consideration is this vintage 1977 ARP 2600 series “2601″ analog synthesizer and matching “3620″ keyboard. This particular set, both with matching serial numbers (0711), is in near mint, all original, impeccably serviced, condition and includes the original case lids, the original owner’s manual, the controller owner’s manual, the original patch book, and original patch cables. This unit was purchased directly from synth tech extraordinaire Will Alexander, and though it was in extremely excellent shape when initially serviced, it was transformed into the absolute best functioning ARP 2600 possible: every single mechanical component was cleaned, all rubber bushings were replaced, and everything was precisely calibrated. For those who have been waiting for the definitive premium example, well, look no further, this is the one, and we have decided to sell it to the highest bidder with No Reserve, Free USA shipping, and discounted Worldwide delivery, so place a bid, because finding a comparable keyboard will be near impossible!

Will Alexander, personal synth tech for Keith Emerson/ELP, Herbie Hancock, and The Rolling Stones, to name just a handful, in addition to being an important figure at Oberheim, took great care in restoring what little needed to be addressed to beyond factory specifications, resulting in the best performing, most consistent ARP 2600 we’ve had the pleasure of offering. The only mod, which we considered highly thoughtful, was the replacement of the traditional oval power cable receptacle with a standard IEC female jack. Though no pictured, an IEC cable is included.

This extremely well-preserved piece presents in near immaculate condition, and aside from one minor set of snags (having since been secured by Will) on the exterior of the synth lid, it would otherwise be considered undeniably mint. Save for such, this is an incredibly clean synth, with no evidence of mis-treatment, improper storage, or even expected wear. ” Link

Fully functional and has a matching serial number keyboard, which is very hard to find on most 2600′s. Cosmetically it looks amazing, this may be the nicest Arp 2600 I have ever seen. Outside vinyl looks spotless without any major scruffs or wear like most 2600s. Inside graphics are very bright and clean. Notice how there is no graphics wear around the most commonly used sections like filter slider and oscillator tuning, meaning this one has been lightly used and not abused. Only thing worth mentioning is it had Kenton midi installed (currently not functional), but everything else is original and it looks stunning! Comes from original owner and includes original cases to both units, original owners manual and patch cables. Amazing Arp 2600 sound that is like nothing else and still better than most synths out there today. See pictures below for more details. Don’t miss out on this legendary synthesizer! ” Link

“Though not in pristine cosmetic condition, this is a fantastic original specimen for a player looking to acquire a fully functional unit. It was recently purchased from the original owner, who actually owned 3 different 2600s (one of which we just sold last week for $8,000.00), and was maintained and serviced by him throughout his lengthy ownership.

There are no modifications, no repairs, no breaks, and no missing pieces. Some of the fastening hardware was possibly replaced with alternate washers, otherwise, all of the important sliders, slider tips, modules, etc., are entirely original. The 3620 keyboard is in great shape, works perfectly, and has nicely aligned tempered action.

This early-production second version of the 2600 features the coveted 4012 filter which copied Moog’s patented ladder-filter design, later ending in a legal dispute which forced ARP to change their faulty 4072 filters in 1977″ Link

“For your consideration is this vintage 1978 ARP 2600 series “2601″ analog synthesizer and matching “3620″ keyboard. This particular set, both with matching serial numbers (0837), is in very good all original condition and includes the original cases, owner’s manual, patch cables, and the original power cable. The ARP 2600 is considered the absolute benchmark in compact analog semi-modular synthesis. Extremely versatile, and capable of producing a seemingly indefinite amount of both classic and modern synth sounds, the 2600 has become the standard by which other synths are measured. Some sellers ask upward of $9,000.00 for comparable synths, but we decided to offer this example to the highest bidder, with a $.01 Minimum, No Reserve, Free USA Shipping, and discounted Worldwide delivery! So place a bid now, because this synth will be sold to the highest bidder… regardless of price!” Link

“For sale is a rare Arp 2600 TONUS logo grey face synthesizer, 2600 V2.0, dating from around 1971-1972. It has the Tonus logo and VCO4027, these early Arp’s are highly sought after for their superior sound to the later versions. Just got it back from servicing, and it is fully functional and sounds amazing! Only issue is it is missing one slider cap. Regarding cosmetics; the tolex is very worn, with some stenciling on the outside, and peeling on the inside. The front panel is in pretty good shape. Includes keyboard with matching serial number, along with power cable and patch cables (not pictured). See pictures below for more details. It does have one mod: the keyboard connector is slightly different and more secure than the standard 6 pin version which is notorious for not working well.
Legendary Arp 2600 sound. Don’t miss out on this classic! ” Link

“ARP 2600 (2601: revised/enhanced model) with 3620 keyboard (both serial# xxxx-0571). The synth is in great condition (operationally & physically). It was acquired from a university (the original owner) in the 1990s, and sounds great. The black Tolex that covers the synth & keyboard is in excellent condition. Case covers for synth & keyboard included.

The ARP 2600 was used by noted artists including Tony Banks (Genesis), Edgar Winter (on “Frankenstein”, etc.), Joe Zawinul (Weather Report) and others.

If desired, Seller can include an assortment of original ARP patch cords, photocopies of ARP 2600/3620 documentation, Patch Book, blank patch sheets, ARP brochure, etc., which may be Seller’s possession, as well as any digital copies he has of ARP 2600 documentation, including the Service Manual. (NOTE: Original ARP documents as may be pictured are NOT included, but only copies.)

The unit has always been in a climate-controlled, clean, smoke-free, studio environment. Works great, but will probably need some tuning/calibrating after shipment. Being sold “as is.”" Link

“I am reluctantly selling my prized Arp 2600 modular synth / synthesizer.
For those unaware, this grey panel is the superior Arp2600 to the orange panel version that has the original (quasi legal) filter. Moog sued Arp in the mid 70s and won the lawsuit for Arp stealing their filter design. The later orange panel arps have an inferior filter which takes away a lot of the character that makes a 2600 sound like a 2600. If you open up the inside of it you will see the filter is covered by black plastic cover, this serves no purpose other than for Arp to hide the design theft.

It comes with original keyboard, power cable, patch-book, user manual and a few original stock patch cables. I can throw in about 10 newer patch cables if needed.
The only thing missing from the unit is one slider cap for the left speaker, also there is no handle for the top part of the case. It closes up and seals but needs a new handle if you want to use it as a carrying case. The built in speakers work great and the spring reverb sounds fantastic.
It recently (1 year ago) received a servicing and power supply re-soldering. Cosmetically it is in good shape, the only ‘cosmetic issue is the original owner etched his social security number into the front panel and the keyboard and there is old scotch tape residue stuck in 3 small places ” Link

“For sale is an Arp 2600 grey face synthesizer, 2600P. I believe it is a V3. It does have the Moog 4012 filter! Just got it back from servicing, and it is fully functional and sounds amazing! Only issue is it is missing one slider cap. Regarding cosmetics; the tolex is refinished, pretty good job and looks nice. The important part is the front panel looks near mint, graphics are all very bright and is amazingly clean. The tech said the internals are in very clean shape and not moldy/rusty like some of the other ones he’s seen. See pictures below for more details.

“For sale is an Arp 2600 grey face synthesizer, 2600P. I believe it is a V3 and has the Moog 4012 filter. It is working but could use a servicing as it has a few intermittent problems. I will be getting it serviced in a couple of weeks and might put it back up for sale at a higher price if it doesn’t sell now, but thought I would offer it at a cheaper price to someone who may be up for the task.
Here are a few of the issues:
There appears to be a short somewhere in the audio chain regarding the VCF, VCA, mixer/reverb sections. These do not pass audio as they normally should; sometimes they work, sometimes they cut out (maybe just a short somewhere in there?). When patching directly from VCO’s bypassing the hardwired, everything seems to work (all three VCO’s and all their waveforms sound correct, ring mod works, filter works, S/h and noise works, etc).
One slider’s shaft on the VCO2 pulse width is broken, though you can still use it.
Regarding cosmetics; the tolex is refinished, pretty good job and looks nice. The important part is the front panel looks near mint, graphics are all very bright and is amazingly clean.
Due to these issue it is sold AS-IS. A capable tech should be able to fix it up no problem for $200-$500. No keyboard is included. It does include power cable and a few patch cables. These regularly sell anywhere form $6000 to over $8000, so this may be your chance to grab one at a lower price. Still a great legendary Arp 2600 and once brought fully up to spec will sound amazing again. Don’t miss out on this classic! ” Link
